I don't think there's anyone else who hated themselves so much during their lifetime that withered away, who was later missed and loved so much by so many, he had no idea... as brilliant as he was.... no idea man... R.I.P. Layne
I think that is why a lot of brilliant people like Layne turn to drugs. Unfortunately, life was just too boring for him unless he was shooting up. And "Dirt" was a masterpiece, but an eerie foreshadowing of his fate.

socialdef3 I think it has to do with over exposure... and they find a way through downers to come down from all the lights, people, fame, constant loud music, and beyond. It's just too much, and most get away, die alone with drugs in their system that deal with the chronic anxiety of it all.
Alice in Chains could hit you with either megaton atomic bombs or delicate flowers and everything in between. Staley and Cantrell's harmony was unique and truly beautiful.
The best Seattle band IMO. Love Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden but Alice in Chains always the best to me. The Right turn collaboration was awesome as well.
VTP01 gotcha I of course thought you meant layne. I love jof and self titled (which goes back to metal somewhat) so still don’t agree but can understand what you’re saying.
I always got a special feeling from AIC's songs, and when i listen all these years later they still take me back where i can recall those feelings and moments -- just me in the car singing my lungs out to the band on the radio, or at home on the stereo -- saturating my psyche and soul in Layne's unique vocals and Jerry's perfect guitar, and the smooth unison of the band. What a pair they were. Miss Layne so much.
Define "survived." Patriots "survived" without Tom Brady. The Jacksons "survived" without Michael. A cockroach "survives" without its head. Cantrell's great...but c'mon. Layne was the Main Chain.
Because money is infinitely appreciated, not all great artists generate money with their great art, the art needs to fill a great social culture function and be positive or at least redeeming. Therefore they would actively avoid the spotlight. Alice was really bemoaning but redeeming in the pride of bad fate.
From someone who saw them many times in the early 90s, they were just about to right after Jar of Flies came out and they were set to hit the road sandwiched between Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies for the Shit Hits the Shed tour in 1994 when they had to bow out because of Layne Staley's drug addiction. After that shows became more and more scarce for them.
People did give them attention, imo. I think whatever higher being knew if they were bigger than maybe Layne would have deteriorated faster. He didn't like the media that much. That's what Grind is about.
They had a few multi platinum albums in america so they did just fine. If you were talking about say the Melvin's or Skin Yard who were doing this stuff when AIC were a glam band then fair enough
I found this song a few time ago, actually i didn't know Alice in chains that much before, since i am not from that generation. (20 yrs old) But since my first listen i got amazed by their harmonies, vocals, solos, etc. I am the kind of person who listens to anything if i see it's good. It makes no sense, actually to me AIC is one of the bands you could listen to at any Epoch or decade and it would still sound good.
Thanks so much AIC for voicing our anger, anguish, suffering, desperation, depression, loneliness, numbness, emptiness, pain, eagerness, sickness and too many other feelings to mention .Even though I've never taken drugs the problems I've been experiencing certainly are a living hell...singing your songs at least allow me to feel some comfort and relief... can always relate to you...peace to you my friends...

This is hands-down the GREATEST Alice In Chains song EVER: Turns out, it’s also one of the least requested and played songs they’ve made. I’ve only heard it ONCE played on the radio since 1993: I memorized the main chorus’ lyrics, ran home and savored it.
I know I'm late as shit, but the beauty of "power chords" is that they only consist of the root note and a perfect 5th above that root note; without playing the third note of the triad (which determines whether it carries a minor or major tonality) you can get away with some pretty nifty mode mixture, which is something AIC did a lot.
+Nolan “Granolan” Richardson All Alt Rock, Hard Rock and Metal bands do it....you can use 4ths too which I use in certain songs...I love mixing modes ex. Dorian Verses, Aeolian or Harmonic Minor Chorus and Phrygian Bridge orrrr modulate Dorian Verses, Mixolydian Chorus....the possibilities are endless.
You're an idiot. They stole their sound from King's X and Layne Staley admitted it. He even told dUg Pinnick that he can't wait for the next King's X album to come out so he can steal from them again and once chased Jerry Gaskil down a street just to tell him how much he loves King's X.
@@liquidbraino Kings X sounds way more like Power Metal than this does,I think they were probably being to hard on themselves. Kings X obviously sort of vibbed off of Symphony X etc, whereas Alice in Chains is really morelike a mix of Psychedelica and Country Music at its core.
@@liquidbraino Nirvana did rip off most of there song from other bands, but just because you can name off all the times Nirvana were hacks and you know about more underground bands doesn't really say anything about AiC. They were very-much separate projects.

Real Human Bean for real hahaha...guess we are everywhere too to realize that lol. Maybe just don't comment as much lol. But I can never get enough AIC/Mad Season. Laynes music played a big role in helping me battle my own demons of addiction and I wish I could thank him for that.
This is one on my favorite songs by AIC. I can remember back hearing this song on the radio, but they would not play it to often. Solution: I went to the mall in reno, where I was living at the time, bought the cassette, took it home and played it. I must have listened to this song for about 4 hours straight!!! Alice In Chains is the greatest band in the history of rock and roll. Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr, and Sean Kinney. Layne might be the greatest singer to ever step on planet earth but it’s truly the band in general all giving in on that iconic AIC sound. They are the kind of band you don’t have to know of or have ever heard of before in your life for one of their songs to come on and go “this is Alice In Chains”. You’ll just know when it’s them. These guys are incredibly. Best band hands down the board isn’t even close to these guys.
Such an underrated AIC tune. Such a sick ass unique sound yet still unmistakably Alice from Jerry's opening riff. Major/Minor, crazy timing, Sean's work was key as well. All solid ass musicians in their prime here.
Why didn't i hear this song sooner, I've listened to every AiC album multiple times and never bothered to listen to this one. It's like discovering treasure!
More than 20 years have passed and I am still stuck with the feelings and emotions that I feel when listening to this song, damn I am a damn nostalgic sentimentalist who does not let go of the past for these and many Alice songs. I perfectly remember seeing the video on MTV for the first time and being amazed at such a beautiful and heavy song and my mother watering the garden, life has many turns
U are not to blame for considering urself to be so nostalgic. But, realistically, what else can u do but b still dumbfounded and amazed with the unique, amazing talent that came out in that era. The times we live in now will never create such talent. People are just so different nowadays, u just wonder if there will ever be a cool sounding vocalist and guitarist ever again.
All these songs are about his addiction with heroin, i took the dark path into heroin addiction, and i can understand his pain, and suffering. I was lucky to come out alive from its deadly grip, but Layne like so many others were not so lucky. RIP Layne, and to all of those who have lost their battle with drug addiction.

This guitar riff is fucking sick. Just wow....
just the right mix of pain and creepy
STILL HERE IN 2024 TO INFINITY! ITLL NEVER STOP. RIP LANE ROCK ON AIC🤙
Can't get enough of SK's drumming here: clean, menacing, thoroughly "attitudinal." Bonzo's ghost lives!
Pretty big shoes to fill but I have to agree with you. I definitely hear Bonham's influence in Sean ' s beats.
Kat Hamilton Glad we agree, KZH.
+S.A. Hogan his beats always intensify the dark vibe alice in chains has, imo haha
***** Agreed haha!
Kinney is a beast of a drummer and at the same time I have never loved the drum fills, grooves, ect than I do his...even on the unplugged he just nails it!
58 years old and still love this band. I remember cranking the car stereo to them when my daughter was 6 months old. She's 31 now...
@Jerry Cantrell life is good!
@Jerry Cantrell yeah. But, I know you're probably just a troll. Jerry Cantrell has better things to do than hit people up on RUclips. 🙄
@@cathya1038 hahhahahahahaha booooom, tssssss. He got smoked right away :) Brilliant ;)
Me too
If you are reading this, I like your taste in music.
I love Layne's facial expressions and their use of video with a different facial expression superimposed onto the original. Amazing conceptual video work.
4thandinches.... I agree with the first comment. but don't forget that the life has been brutal with him...mother with drugs problems...homeless after...he had pretty hard life personally. and plus from an addict point of view that I was...the addiction drive you to say never again...but you more say that.. you more are into it. I am not here to write down bullshit.. but this guys helped me so much to get rid of my addiction.... and plus yes...you start to hate yourself...at that point I took the right way....Lane the wrong guys....and it is sad tbh. we lost an amazing voice and cool funkin guy
socialdef3 I think it has to do with over exposure... and they find a way through downers to come down from all the lights, people, fame, constant loud music, and beyond. It's just too much, and most get away, die alone with drugs in their system that deal with the chronic anxiety of it all.
My father..
He didn’t hate himself, he hated those who hurt him. The world didn’t deserve such a soul.
Alice in Chains could hit you with either megaton atomic bombs or delicate flowers and everything in between. Staley and Cantrell's harmony was unique and truly beautiful.
Best harmony ever in my book...R.I.P. LAYNE STALEY...much love much respect to all of you...what's up Jerry Cantrell...
Your really hit the nail squarely on the head with your comment 👏🏻
The best Seattle band IMO. Love Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden but Alice in Chains always the best to me. The Right turn collaboration was awesome as well.
I hear ya, but the Toe Jam you can keep
@@korrangrosche Ten was an excellent album. After that they irritated me as well
Idk man Soundgarden goes hard too
@@korrangrosche😂😂
Layne's "Oh yeah.." at 3:16 is the greatest "Oh yeah" in the history of "Oh yeahs."
No one says “yeah” better than Layne
@@genebingle1754 it’s cool how the guitar follows the vocal too
Very underrated AIC 's song. To me, very beautiful song with a great vibe.

@@JR10_RR Wrong. This was in between Dirt and Jar of Flies. Awesome soundtrack btw.
@@JKennedy442 No, I meant as far as the rock side. JoF was just a cathartic let's not play metal songs for a bit breather
Amen!!
Exactly brother ! RIP to not just Layne but to all great musicians whi gave their heart into this .
+m3na9 Amen!
+m3na9 Thats why music is so special, good music especially!
+m3na9 Coulldn't of said it better my self
The most dark and depressing band to come out of Seattle. Legends.
I saw them in some seedy club in San Diego… Biohazard ☣️ opened for them, lol 😝
The fact that AIC survived the death of Layne is a testament of how important Jerry Cantrell is to music.
FACTS
I was more fond of him than Layne. Even on this clip.
Nope
Define "survived." Patriots "survived" without Tom Brady. The Jacksons "survived" without Michael. A cockroach "survives" without its head. Cantrell's great...but c'mon. Layne was the Main Chain.
Don't forget Sean Kinney
I like how Mike Inez grooves lol he bops up and down to the groove.
+Jay Tee Bee yeah actually I noticed Mike Starr did too, they are weirdly similar!
+Jay Tee Bee hahaa its so cute XP
+Jay Tee Bee - Mike Starr was cooler.
MrTinFoiler yeah.. I had such a big crush on Mike Starr
Starr was way cooler than Inez imo. But hey do t get me wrong, Mike Inez is a fucking badass bassist.
One of the most addicting riffs in music history!
i agree
Alice in Chains never disappoints. Why weren't they more appreciated back in the day? They deserved it more than anyone, in my opinion.
They were by ME!!
They had a few multi platinum albums in america so they did just fine. If you were talking about say the Melvin's or Skin Yard who were doing this stuff when AIC were a glam band then fair enough
I did not know this song!! After all the years, this is new to me. What a blessing!
I found this song a few time ago, actually i didn't know Alice in chains that much before, since i am not from that generation. (20 yrs old) But since my first listen i got amazed by their harmonies, vocals, solos, etc. I am the kind of person who listens to anything if i see it's good. But some people stop listening to some songs after some years go away.
Well said my friend
This music is meant to trap you in those fears that you are dealing with!!!I also grew up on these bands and can sing along with most songs but then the LORD showed me what’s behind the veil that they use to distort our reality and it’s very DEMONIC my friend!!!I am still blown away about what I have seen and it’s with every rock band and most 80’s music like Phil Collins per say!!!If you slow down the speed you can see them distort or should I say shape shift right in front of you, there hands mostly look like monster hands and there eyes are always black or blacked out and for what reason????Everything they sing about is about Satan or destruction, casting spells, black magic is being performed right in your very face and you can’t tell they are doing it because it’s done so clever and nobody ever wonders why they pan the scenes so quickly!!!’Theu always have to keep moving or there artificial JIN will have distortions so that’s why people on television are always moving there hands heads eyes etc....It’s pretty freaky when you start to recognize what I’m telling you but look for yourself!!!!NIRVANA IS DEFINITELY CREEPY AS HELL!!!!Ask GOD for wisdom and eyes to see and he will lift the veil for you and you will forever be a changed MAN!!!!KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT BROTHER AND TURN AWAY FROM THESE DESTRUCTIVE FORCES BECAUSE THEY WILL KEEP YOU DOWN!!!Why do you think they all overdose and die???because you will relive old memories and they will keep you down in a low vibration!!!GOOD LUCK!!!

That statement describes Christianity much better than the music you're chastising.
@@sonnyspawn4435 Only the weak minded bafoons think this music is meant to trap you in these fears. Bands like AiC and many others saved my life in my darkest times, in which I saw ZERO signs of your God. I was at my lowest point virtually overdosed on meth, and no signs of God anywhere to help me recuperate myself. Instead all that was there for me was the people I love and my music. So please take your opinions elsewhere or keep them to a point that they don't bash on what other people consider lifesaving. Fav band ever!! 3:40 just gave me chills seeing Layne almost like a skeleton and his facial expression but still love the sweet man.. He speaks on a spitirual level for me.. I know I wrote too much hell I dont even know about spiritual level and that stuff
Erick I always said I never met an Alice song I didn't love....❤️🤘
They crank out incredible songs !!
It's okay you only speak the truth when talking about Alice in chains it is spirituality
I agree Erick
Same. There isn't a single AiC song I don't like.
This is hands-down the GREATEST Alice In Chains song EVER:
Turns out, it’s also one of the least requested and played songs they’ve made.
I’ve only heard it ONCE played on the radio since 1993: I memorized the main chorus’ lyrics, ran home and savored it.
The mesh of minor and major keys is genius
no doubt. AIC could write a strong chorus
Indeed :)
Cantrell is no slouch.
It’s so easy to just get lost in the sounds of Alice In Chains
They made such unique songs, there's nobody like them
You're an idiot.

Last Action Hero might not have gotten a lot of things right, but including this song on its soundtrack was definitely one of them.
+DJCandyManMike as far as satirical films go, I think it's totally overlooked!
bought that soundtrack specifically for this track back in 93 after i heard it on the radio
Todd Stewart I got it for Christmas in 1993, and it's always been one of my favorite soundtracks.
ya. I also got it for angry again. the whole disc was good, but this was my favorite track
Best part and best soundtrack of the movie
The sound of my generation. I'm a drummer and was playing with my band for a living in the early 90's. I was surrounded by music and this was the theme music!!! Good times! I'd do it all over
New to Alice, every song breaks my heart a little, such a loss
I love how Layne's eyes roll back I know EXACTLY how he feels.
How nasty, unique is Jerry Cantrell's guitar style
He definitely puts some stank on it.
A truly very gifted savant guitarist..
So unique, original, dark infectious half-step down guitar tone and style. The best guitarist out of that entire era of music & Washington State next to Jimi Hendrix. Cantrell can't write or play a bad song on a guitar.. o;)
The guitar on the chorus has to be Cantrells heaviest tone ever.
It is so heavy, and cantrell has made so MANY different tones too
pull through.,,,hit the note and pull let vibrate ,,,do the same for vicarious for Tool
Favorite AIC song ever!!! RIP Layne
The riff and drum vibe..
A voice of a generation. 🤘🏼
And BEYOND,FOREVER,and EVER and a DAY nuff’ said!!!

Him or Cornell thats what I always say.
he had a very distinct voice from all the others but lets not underestimate Eddie's, Chris' and Kurt's voice.
Rip Layne
Maybe you can add Scott Weiland?
This is my all time favorite music video I could watch it over and over (and have done so many times)
There are so many AIC songs that should've been made into music vids, but never were: Rain When I Die, Godsmack, Sickman, Dirt, Confusion, Got Me Wrong...and so many others!!
You're everywhere! haha
Why? lol
Played this over and over again on my iPod while riding into work. One of my favorite songs.
Real Human Bean for real hahaha...guess we are everywhere too to realize that lol. Maybe just don't comment as much lol. But I can never get enough AIC/Mad Season. Laynes music played a big role in helping me battle my own demons of addiction and I wish I could thank him for that.
Jerry don't get enough credit as a rock n roll legend his riffs song writing and his voice is amazing
i agree
One of their top tier songs!
I really hope one day they will be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame
Next year will be 20th year anniversary of Laynes death. Would be fitting wouldn’t it?! Kurt got his in 2014. Give Layne his in 2022.
AIC is truly one of the most credible bands in modern rock
Best rock/Metal band in the 90's , best rock/metal singer of all times.
Laynes voice takes me to a whole new dimension..
The Only Girl In The Room Indeed
The Only Girl In The Room ...and I'm the only boy in the room...I know, too corny..🙄🙄😎
But Ricky G, you're gay.
Your beauty, take me too.
Girl your on the same airbus as me
Layne was the best lead guy period... His vocals could break glass
so true i couldn't have said it better
Best singer for sure. Weiland was the better front man of the generation
Last Action Hero is such an underrated movie. The soundtrack alone was friggin' awesome. And it's got 2 AIC tracks!
Didn't know that but good to know
My favorite so called GRUNGE band. I don't care what they are classified as they just rock!
This is one on my favorite songs by AIC. I can remember back hearing this song on the radio, but they would not play it to often. Solution: I went to the mall in reno, where I was living at the time, bought the cassette, took it home and played it. I must have listened to this song for about 4 hours straight!!! I never got tired of it. RIP Layne.
Same, John. I put this song on repeat the whole night. Felt a cold chill down my spine when that powerful, yet mesmerizing chorus hit. Keep groovin', brudda.
I always dug this one as well, once of those that seems forgotten but that main riff and chorus is memorable as hell
John Huddleston u shud check out the live version in the Netherlands...I've never seen Layne perform like that...he was out there that night
there is something so special in this band, a feeling that hits me everytime i listen to Alice in chains, like its mezmerizing me to a another world, and makes me addicted to AIC more than anything else, everytime i listen to them Layne feels so Alive ... its insane, this is probably one of the best gifts in my life knowing this band
The rhytm , the lyrics what the hell, the song Is amazing
Alice In Chains is the greatest band in the history of rock and roll. Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr, and Sean Kinney. Layne might be the greatest singer to ever step on planet earth but it’s truly the band in general all giving in on that iconic AIC sound. They are the kind of band you don’t have to know of or have ever heard of before in your life for one of their songs to come on and go “this is Alice In Chains”. You’ll just know when it’s them. These guys are incredibly. Best band hands down the board isn’t even close to these guys.
U forgot Mike Inez he played bass in all AIC songs after Dirt was released
RIP Layne 20 yrs ago we lost one of the greatest singers ever and sweetest souls. 😢
Phrygian scale makes for the best music. Psychedelic Egyptian in the feeling.
Such an underrated AIC tune. Such a sick ass unique sound yet still unmistakably Alice from Jerry's opening riff. Major/Minor, crazy timing, Sean's work was key as well. All solid ass musicians in their prime here.
Heard the intro of this tune on the 'last action hero' movie . Bought the soundtrack & what a good song it is . Layne Staley vocals Brilliant!
Why didn't i hear this song sooner, I've listened to every AiC album multiple times and never bothered to listen to this one. It's like discovering treasure!
its not on any AiC album it was on a movie soundtrack "the last action hero"movie sucked but the cd is great
definitely my favourite era of this band, nothing else compares, this fucking riff never gets old
Most underrated AIC song out there.
Still my favorite band.
Unmatched today.
