My fav Character from the all Muumi world is Mörkö. Not many people know it but the character is actually a lady and as far as I could see, it is only a lonely weird girl dressed in black that kinda makes everyone a bit scaried and they feel ice cold around her. She is not bad, she is just different. I can totally, totally relate to her.
I really needed this video because as a non Finnish speaker I couldn’t find the Finnish names of moomin characters because I can’t browse Finnish sites 😁 thank you ❤️
Fun fact: So basically, in books that translated to russian we have the same names, as it was translated directly from Finnish. Thank you for your videos, they motivates me to study finnish❤️
Thank you, Kat! I live in UK and we are sending a Moomin card with a picture of 'Little My' (Pikku Myy) to my wife's great niece and I wondered what 'Little My' was in Swedish (= Lilla My)... and then Finnish - so I ended up at your video. My mother was Finnish, I grew up with all the Moomin stories and we spent my childhood summers staying with her sister (my aunt) in Helsinki and in the Finnish countryside (south coast lakes and islands) late 1950s to 1970s and fairly often throughout my adult life. I love hearing the Finnish language (my mother's mother tongue is like a lullaby to me still) although I cannot speak it so well but I can read Finnish fairly well. The Moomin books have stayed with me throughout my life, and Finland, and Helsinki holds my heart.
I only learnt about the Moomin when I started studying Finnish. I'm not sure if they're well-known in Argetina. Anyway, I came back from a trip to Finland a couple of weeks ago, and while I was in Tampere I visited the Muuminmuseo. I found it really interesting, even though I'm not keen on the character designs; the museum is quite beautiful. I played the audio of one of the 3d tableau (the ones in which you can hear a part of the story) and I didn't get a thing 😂 I'm too much of a beginner. I wonder if I'll find the books a bit easier or if I should wait a bit longer. They looked like pretty advanced reading.
Yeah I think the books aren't 100% for beginner level, but cool you got to visit the museum! I've never been there myself :D Hope you enjoyed your time in Finland!
Pikku Myy is my favorite as well, in English they refer to her as "Little My," which is difficult for many English readers as they just read it as "Little Mai"
When I was young I liven n the Shetland islands and this was one of the only shows that we could get on the TV(it was 1980s then). Snufkin has always been a character I wanted to be like and tried to live his way of life, rediscovering it all now I study Finnish is a beautiful and nostalgic experience, so great that you have made a video about it!
Moomins are the most adorable creatures I've ever seen, I even have one as my desktop background! Sorry Kat, but the moomins motivate me to learn Finnish more than you do XD
My mom used to read moomin stories to me when I was a small kid :) By the way, my native language is Russian and the translated Russian names of the characters are very similar. And I was also really scared of Mörkö as a kid, lol :)

Minnesota started Finnfest, and hosts it nearly annually. Finns in minnesota also celebrate Saint Urho’s day, (a saint we made up after one of your presidents lol). torilla tavataan ja suomalaiset ovat aina tervetulleita Minnesotan
Just came across a "15 things only found in Japan" video and there is a moomin restaurant that will bring a moomin character to sit with you if you're dining alone. Thanks for the video.

@@bigscarysteve When i sometime pronounce r i struggle because my r is soft and Finnish r is sharp I don't know about How native English felt while pronouncing I guess you are British
@@marin_1441 No, you guessed wrong. I am not British. I am American. You didn't answer my question as to what your native language is. I might be able to better address your pronunciation questions if I knew the answer to that. Considering the fact that I've seen you use British spellings, I'm guessing that whatever dialect of English you learned, it obviously wasn't American English. I was just wondering about this question because Americans have a problem with pronouncing ö. If the ö isn't properly explained to Americans, we tend to hear it as "er." Thus, ör is going to present a double problem for us. The ö is technically described as a tense rounded mid front vowel. This sound occurs in a number of other languages, including Swedish, German, and French. I've seen German and French textbooks for Americans from the first decade of the 20th century in which the instructions given were to say "a" as in "late," but round the lips at the same time. Foreign language instructors in America today absolutely will not give such instruction. I brought this up in a language teaching methods class back in the 1980's, and my instructor got mad and just said, "No! That's NOT the way we do it!" When I asked her why not, I didn't get a rational answer--just anger. It seems to me as if the American approach to teaching foreign languages is to make it as obscure and confusing as possible--more like placing a stumblingblock in the student's way, rather than trying to actually teach them anything.
Hopefully u teach more advance on Finnish language. I really interest learning finnish language. Olet mahtava. Kiitos. Am i right? ahahaha😂. Anyways im from Malaysian. 🇲🇾
Not specifically related to this video--but I have a question. I know Kat went to an international school in Finland. I'm wondering whether they taught British English or American English there.
It depended on the teacher and where they were from. There was no consistent method so my spelling might be all over the place! They usually just told us to choose one and try to be consistent with its use. In Finnish schools I've seen they have British English in their textbooks
Wow I’ve always wondering why Nuuskamuikkunen in russian translation is almost a random set of letters (Snusmumrik). Is it absolutely meaningless in Finnish too?
Well I googled it in Finnish and there doesn't seem to be a clear answer for it. "nuuska" is a type of nicotine product and "muikkunen" is a type of fish so there were some jokes about that but not much else xD My Swedish isn't good enough to search the Swedish name origin since in Finnish there wasn't much info about it!
