My dad flew 757/767 and we flew all over as kids and I certainly did not appreciate it the way I do now. Seldom fly these days and it's usually crammed into the back of an A320 or 737. Gone are the glory days of meals served on real plates with real silverware and half full flights.

N57111 (plane featured here) was the test aircraft for the original 757 winglets. It was owned by CO before they merged with UA. It eventually got modified with scimitar winglets which the whole CO/UA fleet of 752s and 753s all now have. They are all equipped with R/R RB-211 engines which make for a much liked combination of aircraft & engines. Their pilots call these aircraft "hot rods." They make a loud high pitched wail unlike any other engine.

This is a HUGE reason to fly with the legacy airlines if you’re an aviation geek (and can afford the extra $$). There are still these odd little routes that fly *legendary* aircraft completely out of left field. When I was a kid in the 90s, I went to visit my grandparents in Florida and flew on a DC-10 during the first leg from Boston to Detroit…a DC-10! I’m glad there are corners of the aviation world where some reasonable facsimile of that experience still exists.

    • @bernardowens1648

The legendary "DC-10", gone the way of the "Doh-Doh Bird". The passenger versions were mothballed some years ago and the remaining cargo variants flown by FedEx and some foreign companies as DC-10S and MD-11s will come to an end in the near future. No spare parts being produced and the parent company Boeing destroyed all of the blueprints after acquiring Douglas Aircraft in the hopes of selling more Boeing jets.

The 757 was always my favorite narrow body aircraft to fly on. Everything just seemed effortless for that plane and those engines. Someone called them the muscle car of commercial aircraft and I believe it! The only full size airliner that could press me securely back in my seat at takeoff. I will miss them when they are gone.

Those rocket style takeoffs are typical in Orange County (John Wayne). Since there's neighborhoods close to the runway, there is an ordinance for planes to gun their engines with the brakes on so they can take off fast, short, and climb real high quickly to a certain altitude coasting over the residences until it passes over the ocean then continues the climb which lessens the overall plane noise pollution.

I'll never forget the 757 when I flew out of Gibraltar a couple of times (Monarch Airlines) back in the day! The engine spool-up held on the brakes and then the insane acceleration down the runway was just glorious - but the climb out was something else!
One of my mates is a 777 FO with BA and she has said that if BA still operated the 757 that it would have been her first choice of ops. She often crews with ex 757/767 Captains and they all miss the 752 massively.
Hoping to get on a Jet2 flight at some point soon before they are replaced by the A321 - which is a great replacement, but just not really comparible to the 757 in my opinion!

Terrific plane & engine combo. I believe the RR RB211 535E4 on the B757 holds the world record for uninterrupted time-on-wing endurance. These engines were ultra reliable, more so than the latest up to date turbines which cannot match the same duration in the persuit to push the bounderies of ever better fuel consumption & performance. The latest turbines are still marvels of engineering but one could argue the RB211 535 was of particular note.
