Visiting the Krishnamurti Foundation + Library in Ojai, California

  • Looking back, it's almost like the book "Total Freedom" was a pre-requisite for this relationship. Barry read it before he met Sydney, and recommended Sydney read it when she got bit by the skydiving bug.
Total Freedom is one of many of Jiddhu Krishnamurti's works and it has shaped how both of us move through the world, see our surroundings, and has really changed our lives. When we were in Ventura and realized how close we were to Ojai, we decided to take the morning and afternoon to wander the grounds, read some of Krishnamurti's work at the library (his former home), and have some incredible conversations with the people who find themselves there.
Most notably, we met a man named Troy after we did our initial lap around the property. If you have a chance to visit the Foundation and see the paintings in the main building, most of them have been loaned to the organization by Troy. He's not native to the area, but when he and his wife landed in Ojai, he started coming to the Foundation property to paint different aspects of the land at different times during the year.
Let's just say our conversation with Troy was one of the most enlightened conversations we've ever had with a total stranger, and was exactly the confirmation we needed at exactly the right time.
This doesn't even begin to cover the significance that Krishnamurti's work has had on Barry's life in particular, but you can see it in his face at the beginning of the video - this man isn't in awe often, but that day he was.
I'd go back there every day just to see that look on his face!

K transformed my life in the early 90s. I lived in LA and would drive a couple of hours north to Ojai to attend dialogues on the weekends. They took place at the Oak Grove School in Ojai that he helped establish. In between the dialogues I would drive to the K library in another part of Ojai where K also lived. It looked nothing like what you showed in the video. It was darker and cozier, a craftsman style building surrounded by pepper trees. There were DVDs (or maybe video cassettes) we could watch on tvs in the library, and plenty of books to browse. This appears to be a complete remodel; a much more modern, lighter, and sanitized version of the old library and home. I'm thinking I like the older, original version better. Still, I'm glad the Krishnamurti Foundation lives on to help disceminate the teachings of this incredible sage . . .

@@HikingMyFeelings I remember the orange groves all over Ojai Valley. Such a beautiful place. I used to call it Shangri-La, with the "purple moment" at sunset upon the Topa Topa Mountains. I didn't try the oranges from the orange groves at the JK Foundation. Having lived in SoCal for many years I was treated to delicious, locally grown fruit and vegetables regularly. I remember tasting the seeds from the pepper tree K would meditate under by his home and library . . . :)

I've been saving up the series till now so that I can binge them all. I am so glad that I did because the out-take says it all. Thank you both for all that you have done and will do in the future. You ARE making a difference by forging your own paths, showing us how it's done your way and sharing with the world for inspiration. Thank you once again. PEACE!

The only books that were in the "library" were books written by Jiddu translated into a crazy amount of different languages.
