  • Matilija lake is just north of Ojai California, and upstream from Matilija lake is a natural hot springs, which is open to the public on a reservation basis. Matilija lake was formed by a dam on a river, and the lake is closed to the public, but you can get in through hiking trails. Matilija lake is overgrown, and not maintained, and there are a lot of biting insects flying around. This video shows what Matilija Lake in Ojai looks like, and I show you where to go to visit the hot springs.

I remember when there were boat docks; sailboat & fishing boat rentals, bait & tackle shop and a snack bar. There were picnic and campgrounds on one side of the lake. It was a destination. Much of it still went on after the floods of 1969.

Wow. I didn’t realize there was that much going on there. We ended up driving up there because we saw it on the map and figured it was open to the public.

I went there a number of times first as a kid and later as an adult. I was there Christmas of 79 when the drought ended and shortly after, around New Years a giant wall of water came down the canyon and took out a dozen houses and that filled the lake in.

I was a summer ranger here in 1973 when there was a county campground and ranger home. It was a really nice campground. Kind of sad to see that the flood took the whole thing out.

Yes. It sounds like it was really nice before everything was destroyed.

@@hoohoohoblin It was. I'm Facebook friends with the last ranger who was there. The ranger's home was washed away and he barely got out alive. I believe the dam made the flooding worse since it blocked the water's flow. Building it was a bad idea and the faster they remove it the better.

They've been talking about taking that dam down for years, the scissor graffiti on it is fantastic

Yes. I read that it’s screwing up the migration of the fish, and it looks pretty run down. I expect at some point soon it will break on its own and flood the town.
