Me too. But decided to pull the trigger and try it. And I was right, I suck at it and it's really diffulicult. But with a bunch of playing, I slowly figured out what this and that do. I honestly am not even good as I should be but I'm definitely waaayyy ahead compared to when I just used it for the first week
I have watched many videos on flash and I go away from it frustrated. You broke this down so simple yet super informative. Your sense of humor is the best!
This is Gold Omar!!! I used these techniques in my event shoot tonight, and my confidence level went through the roof! I was hyping groups while taking their photos, and I got more "peak moments" than I ever dreamed off 🎉
I must be honest, it's the most exceptional photography tutorial I've ever come across, seamlessly blending learning and laughter into a single experience 😄👍👌👏
I hereby declare Omar Gonzalez the best tutor EVER! 😌 Omar, you're able to make complicated things simple and does that with a great sense of humor. Thanks. Again!!
Great tutorial Omar. When you double the distance, you need 2 extra stops. The inverse square law is 1 over the distance squared, so doubling the distance means you only get 1/4 of the light. Two full stops - one stop to get you to 1/2 and another stop to get you back to 1. Nevertheless, this is a great tutorial (also very entertaining). Cheers
LMAO!! This is the funiest and most easy to understand the concept.. I am a visual learner, and this tutorial made my day!! I am going to watch it again just for fun.. Well done, 😂😂😂😂😂
I kinda do this differently, because I rely on auto exposure very often. I usually set the flash ttl metering between one and two stops lower than my ambient exposure, so it is both on Auto with the set difference. I then use the excomp-dial for ambient exposure and the flash dial for needed difference between ambient and flash exposure. Less control but more flexibility when switching rooms or when suddenly the lights change. Canon does a great job with auto everything, other brands less so. Thanks for your tutorial!
I try this last weekend pointing directly using double diffuser and it works very great! Like when I use umbrella beauty dish in studio. Colors was so awesome in edit
"Best In Class" explanation of "Stops" and "Clicks"! I will never achieve your level of proficiency with a flash, but it's nice to see that it can be done. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.
You saved me from agony. Thank you for this tutorial. I’m a food photographer but a client asked me to shoot an event and now I can go in with confidence knowing actually what I’m doing. A pleasure to watch this video!
As a event photographer i totally agree. Like Omar said, look how's the light around to get the moody environmet and then set the flash to manual. All these new modern TTL flashes haven't given me any improvement which works for me in nightlife / dark environments. I use an old Nikon flash (SB-800) which does the job a nd has not so many settings to mess around. As seen in the video the flash bounced back from the ceiling and fives a soft light. that's good in locations with not so high ceilings, but this doesn't work in big dark clubs. you can use a little refector, or plastic softbox / cap on the flash to get a more soft light.
I like how you explain the practical side of things, like actually what do you do when you're in the thick of it. Thank you so much! I was the lady fiddling with her flash last night at my first attempt at event photography lol. I usually do landscapes and studio portraits and other things that aren't so on the fly
Hey Omar, this video is fantastic!! I’ve always been afraid to use flash at any family event, but I used your instructions from here and did an event, and boy!!! I’m so happy with the results. Combined with a larger flash bender, I managed to get more decent images than not. Many thanks.
This is the simplest explanation of how to use a flash. Thank you! Now it’s starting to make sense. Until now I’ve avoided taking pictures of people indoors. Maybe now I’ll give it a try.
Hello Omar! I just finished my first wedding event as a second shooter and this video of yours helped me a lot. Thank you for explaining the ambient and flash exposure technique. Especially the one with distance. I am happy with my shots using my Nikon Z50 and Godox TT685ii. (I need to activate my flash exposure first so I can't easily do the no look technique)
You're very silly. I like that. I also like this vid, I love taking dance floor shots so the part at the end about not fiddling with setting while you're talking to people really resonated. Cheers!
Great video! And ... 1) If the room lights not at 5600K or whatever, you'll probably want to gel your flash so that matches or at least gets closer. 2) The reason why TTL isn't used is because every new person with a lighter/darker shirt, or the DJ lights, will create different flash exposures instead of consistent ones based on distance.
Thank you for the clear explanation of how the flash works! Your instructions really helped me better understand how to use this feature for all people specially for having English as a second language. again!
Oh em gee. I just LOVE your videos, Omar!!!! You teach so well…the beginner (me!!) can totally understand what you are saying and doing without a lot of technical speak that confuses and loses someone new to the game. Your humor is a plus, I haven’t watched one of your videos yet without laughing right out loud. Thank you so much!!!
Wow that was a brilliant video, so much energy, cant wait to test this method out. Time to go look for our unsuspecting cats in the house (we know cats love a flash right?!)
With bounce flash technically you need to consider the distance from the flash to the walls and ceiling to the subject. That's why the room got brighter when the distance doubled but actually the bounce distance didn't change all that much.
You're naturally funny lol, and a great teacher.
Not a flash person - always been intimidated. This was, by far, the best and clearest explanation I have ever heard (or seen)! Thank you!
Yes, well done Omar!

I can see why he's such a good event photographer. His ability to engage with the people as he's working and make it fun.
6:08 I love you for this

Well done,
😂😂😂😂😂
Aieee. I had to watch again. I was laughing so hard I missed parts of it. I wish you were my teacher growing up.

who wants to see Omar doing stand up comedy ?
I try this last weekend pointing directly using double diffuser and it works very great! Like when I use umbrella beauty dish in studio. Colors was so awesome in edit
Oh wow, this is actually a super useful way to conceptualize flash settings. Very well done!
Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge Omar. You have the best photography channel!
One of ‘the’ best descriptions on how to properly expose subjects with flash (manual) I’ve ever seen. Thanks!!
Oh my god, this video is incredible Omar. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with so much humour. I laugh at all your videos !

this video is informative, great for beginners, and actually fun to watch 😊
Thanks Omar! Your event images are amazing and always beautifully lit. Thanks for this tutorial always great!
The best part of this is that he is being literal about the dancing over to the subject. 😂 The topics get my attention, I stay for the enthusiasm.
I have been practicing and I commend your way of teaching. Makes it easy for people like myself with short attention spans to stay locked in!
You saved me from agony. Thank you for this tutorial. I’m a food photographer but a client asked me to shoot an event and now I can go in with confidence knowing actually what I’m doing. A pleasure to watch this video!
