S1: ‘Caste’ is British Class Imposed on Indians - Unmissable Dr. Subramanian Swamy

  • The Festival of Bharat - Series 1: Dr. Subramanian Swamy ji explains what many Indic scholars take for granted - that caste, derived from the Portuguese word ‘casta' - is essentially a legacy of the European class system bequeathed by Britain, to India. Another (brutally frank!) explanation by the inimitable Dr. Swamy.

      1) Varnasrama darma
      2) sanga darma

The very nature of DHARMA includes all these and at the same time transcends all these.

Caste comes from the Portugal word "Castas". The Portuguese used to follow the castas practice and also divided the Indian society in terms of Castas when they occupied Goa. Then the same was carried on by the British during the 1872 census.

Casteism was the part of society not religion. Because it was based in work and no where it has been mentioned in the religion and also if you compare it with varna vyavastha then you are a fool because varna vyavastha is based on one's own karma and guna and not on birth. Your ancestor could have been a brahmin or kshatriya or vaishya and mine could have been shudra. But the question is how it became rigid?
Richard Eaton, a professor of History, writes, "anyone could become warrior regardless of social origins, nor do the jati-another pillar of alleged traditional Indian society-appear as features of people's identity. Occupations were fluid." Evidence shows, according to Eaton, that Shudras were part of the nobility, and many "father and sons had different professions, suggesting that social status was earned, not inherited" in the Hindu Kakatiya population in the Deccan region between the 11th and 14th centuries.[115]
For northern Indian region, Susan Bayly writes, "until well into the colonial period, much of the subcontinent was still populated by people for whom the formal distinctions of caste were of only limited importance; Even in parts of the so-called Hindu heartland of Gangetic upper India, the institutions and beliefs which are now often described as the elements of traditional caste were only just taking shape as recently as the early eighteenth century-that is the period of collapse of Mughal period and the expansion of western power in the subcontinent."[120
For western India, Dirk Kolff, a professor of Humanities, suggests open status social groups dominated Rajput history during the medieval period. He states, "The omnipresence of cognatic kinship and caste in North India is a relatively new phenomenon that only became dominant in the early Mughal and British periods respectively. Historically speaking, the alliance and the open status group, whether war band or religious sect, dominated medieval and early modern Indian history in a way descent and caste did not."[121]
Richard Eaton, a professor of History, states that the presumption of a rigid Hindu caste system and oppression of lower castes in pre-Islamic era in India, and it being the cause of "mass conversion to Islam" during the medieval era suffers from the problem that "no evidence can be found in support of the theory, and it is profoundly illogical".[123
Jackson states that, contrary to the theoretical model of caste where Kshatriyas only could be warriors and soldiers, historical evidence confirms that Hindu warriors and soldiers during the medieval era included other castes such as Vaishyas and Shudras.[128]
Jackson states that, contrary to the theoretical model of caste where Kshatriyas only could be warriors and soldiers, historical evidence confirms that Hindu warriors and soldiers during the medieval era included other castes such as Vaishyas and Shudras.[128]
Eaton states that, "Looking at Bengal's Hindu society as a whole, it seems likely that the caste system-far from being the ancient and unchanging essence of Indian civilisation as supposed by generations of Orientalists-emerged into something resembling its modern form only in the period 1200-1500".[135]
Susan Bayly, an anthropologist, notes that "caste is not and never has been a fixed fact of Indian life" and the caste system as we know it today, as a "ritualised scheme of social stratification," developed in two stages during the post-Mughal period, in 18th and early 19th century. Three sets of value played an important role in this development: priestly hierarchy, kingship, and armed ascetics.
Nicholas Dirks has argued that Indian caste as we know it today is a "modern phenomenon,"[c] as caste was "fundamentally transformed by British colonial rule."[d] According to Dirks, before colonial rule caste affiliation was quite loose and fluid, but colonial rule enforced caste affiliation rigorously, and constructed a much more strict hierarchy than existed previously, with some castes being criminalised and others being given preferential treatment.[187][page needed][
The emergence of a caste system in the modern form, during the early period of British colonial rule in the 18th and 19th century, was not uniform in South Asia. Claude Markovits, a French historian of colonial India, writes that Hindu society in north and west India (Sindh), in late 18th century and much of 19th century, lacked a proper caste system, their religious identities were fluid (a combination of Saivism, Vaisnavism, Sikhism), and the Brahmins were not the widespread priestly group (but the Bawas were).[199] Markovits writes, "if religion was not a structuring factor, neither was caste" among the Hindu merchants group of northwest India.[
First read this then comment . This is the origin of modern caste system with proof by historians and Wikipedia 😁😁😁

It's high time to break all illusions of 'caste' and caste based 'reservation'. First and foremost one needs to know the origin of the word 'caste'. Certainly it's not from Indus (Bhāratam) civilization. The ancient Bhāratam existed way before a European discovery (of the sea route). It's often confused with varna-shrama-dharma (duties to be performed by social groups). There's a broad distinction between the Sanskrit word 'varna' and the European word 'casto' -> 'casta' -> 'caste'.
Ask yourself: does one need just a head or torso with arms or thighs or legs in the human body ?
That's the analogy for social groups within the Hindu society, proclaimed by Lord Krishna and it's available in sacred book Bhagavad-Gita, yet there's so much belief in hearsay (rumours) based on misconstrued and distorted views of European colonists (the agents of missionary, to name a few Friedrich Max Muller, Thomas Babington Macaulay, Bishop Robert Caldwell, Herbert Hope Risley, Et al.).
In all honesty, we Indians have not secured true freedom from European civilization slavery (colonial mindset still persists), just not yet.

Caste system did exist in India but it was talent based not birth based. Sage Valmiki belonged Balmiki caste(Dalit) yet he was considered a Brahmin because of the knowledge he had.
Similarly Ravana was a Brahmin by birth but he was considered a Rakshas because of his deeds. It is clearly written in the Vedas(the only books which are the foundation of Hinduism) that qualities are more important than birth.
There is a video by Karolina Goswami on caste system, just watch it and you will understand it a lot better.
Turning caste system from talent based to birth based was a strategy of British to divide Indians and it worked pretty well.
Similar to Sati which was suicide , which happened after Islamic Invasions. Before Islamic Invasions the cases of Sati were extremly rare, to avoid rape and being kept as sex slaves women committed suicide by burning themselves alive. The tradition of burning women alive existed in Europe, it was called witch hunting remember the Salem witch trials?
Calling Sati a tradition was also a British propaganda to prove how uncivilised Indians are.

Dr Swamy real hero.. please let us all unite regardless. We should be more accepting and helping the SC community, because of the British we unknowingly did a lot of damage to them but the time has come for us to come together. Caste system was introduced by the British, they changed our texts and created new meanings out of it, exactly like how they edited the old testament conveniently. There were different jaatis described in manusmriti, but a person's respect was never based on what he does or where he was born, it was always based on a person's character. The indigenous people were so soft and liberal when the British arrived they just took advantage of us and created divide amongst us, for eg they created the zamindar system to extort ridiculous amount of tax from the natives, which made the natives hate the zamindars, which was exactly their plan. They did this wherever they went, look at the state of Africa. They mapped us and gave us boundaries. The truth has been distorted and we were made to feel inferior. And that inferiority complex is still there among the youth. Please read the book destroying India by Rajiv malhotra sir. You will know what happened. The east India company also bought a lot of Christian missionaries. Look at what they teach to the poor in India claiming that we are devil worshipers etc to make them hate us more in the name of secularism, and the Congress encourage s this so they can use them as vote banks. How can a Hindu who is force converted to Christianity by the British brainwashing and torturing can be a Christian. Please watch the movie Django unchained, you will come across a black man who helps the white man to control the slaves. The Bible allowed slavery. It's their very nature.

    Five varna:
    1) Brahmans (priests and teachers)
    2) Kshatriyas (rulers and warriors)
    3) Vaishyas (merchants and traders)
    4) Sudras (workers and peasants)
    5) Harijans or Untouchables, which were not in the social order (sewage workers, road sweepers, etc.)
But again the jadhi or caste is another sub classification of occupation similar to varna. Example there are castes having "vellalar" as part of caste name in tamil. Meaning a farmer. When we split the caste name's we would get the name of occupation. Also these names are linguistic based.

Then why shouldn't everyone be a priest? That too is a profession, let the practitioner be a Brahmin. Shouldn't everyone be given a chance? All the speakers here are brahmins who subscribe to RSS ideologies. It is well known that the promiscuous media does not interview ordinary people and does not invite the grassroots to debate

“It is a pity that Caste even today has its defenders. The defences are many. It is defended on the ground that the *Caste System* is but another name for division of labour; and if division of labour is a necessary feature of every civilized society, then it is argued that there is nothing wrong in the Caste System. Now the first thing that is to be urged against this view is that the Caste System is not merely a division of labour. *_It is also a division of labourers_* . Civilized society undoubtedly needs division of labour. But in no civilized society is division of labour accompanied by this unnatural undoubtedly needs division of labour. But in no civilized society is division of labour accompanied by this unnatural division of labourers into watertight compartments. The Caste System is not merely a division of labourers which is quite different from division of labour-it is a hierarchy in which the divisions of labourers are graded one above the other. In no other country is the division of labour accompanied by this gradation of labourers.”

Otherwise it will vanish off from India. If we dont take measures now then dont be suprised if India becomes a majority Muslim, Christian state like how Kerala has already become. Reforms in hinduism is a must caste surnames which differentiate a person based on birth should be abolished and intercaste marriage should be encouraged.Period.

People look at your name, then your skin tone than evaluate what and who you are before you can even say hello. I am from a so called "upper caste" and I definitely understood my privileged. Even standing in line for darshan at a temple, I was asked my name and ushered into another line that the priest claimed was "more appropriate" for me. Not all people wete interested in it.. they has their own family sttucture learning based on their profession. . But today education is common to all. No one is denied schooling. Anyone can join and learn at par. If u argue he is getting more marks because of his caste u accept his knowledge is superior. . I dont think so. All can score irrespectice of caste. Need of reservation doesnt arise if all get opportunity. .but marriage needs understanding the family culture food habits spiritual understandings. There is common behavior among them. So i support the system of castes and oppose reservation as it haa nothing to do with brain workings.

Varna Vaivastha is an Indic Anthropological Interpretation of Any Society which comes through you as per your reincarnation and life path these aren't caste based birth based but rather Roles and Responsibilities towards the Profession itself while maintaining Dharma and it's four pillars of Cleanliness, Truth, Compassion & Austerity
    Tatva Varna Dharma
    Akaasha Sadhu Surrender
    Vayu Vaishaya Compassion
    Agni Kshtriya Cleanliness
    Jal Brahmin Minimalist
    Dharti Shudhra Truth
    Panch Tatva Prakriti
    Panch Tatva Pravitri
    Panch Tatva Shareer
    Panch Tatva Samaaj
    Aham Brahmasmi
    I am the Universe
    1 Aham Shudhra (Dharti)
    2 Aham Brahamin (Jal)
    3 Aham Kshtriya (Agni)
    4 Aham Vaishya (Vayu)
    5 Aham Sadhu (Akaash)
    6 Aham Atama
    7 Mahadeva Namo Namaha (Paramatma)
7 Chakra 7 Colours 7 Week Days 7 Primary Nav Grah other than Rahu & Ketu who are always on a retrograde while Rahu represents what you seek to resolve this life time (descend), Ketu represents your past life time which you mastered (ascend)
    Within in Society Chatur Varna
    1 Shudhra Artist | Shiva + Rudra
    2 Brahmin Seeker | Brahma + Manu
3 Kshtriya Protector | Shakti + Tri Gun
    4 Vaishya Explorer | Vishnu + Vayu
5 Sadhu Self Mastery | Sadhana
Reclusive Hermit who ran Gurukul & Ashram in Van away from society for better and higher learning process as it's an ideal place for attaining Shantata (Ideal state of mind coming from Navras) or mental state to imbibe knowledge.
Chatur Varna is for Karma Setup while
Gurukul is for establishing Dharma in all aspects so that each Varna works in accordance to one another as the panch Tatva work with one in prakriti.
All 5 together constitute Panch Varna Vaivasya, Panchnama are not tribals or those outside Chatur Varna but Panchnamas are Sadhus, Sant, Rishi's, Babas, Naga Babas who have renounced everything to pursue Sadhana.
As even in a tribal setup one would come across Chatur Varna system being practiced as someone would be a shaman or a warrior or an explorer or artists which is as Prakriti as in any kingdom or empire or Civilisation. The western interpretation of tribal comes from the word tri as most indeginious, pagan followers have a common lineage of believing in the concept of Trinity of Brahma Vishnu Mahesh or Poseidon, Zeus & Hades or pick any Civilization from Egyptian to Nordic to Greek to Romans and the trinity prevails but with different interpretations names and perception.
    Thus we always had a
    Panch-ayat System
    Ram Rajya Pra-panch
    Gram Rajya Sar-panch
    Gram Raj Panch-ayat Raj
    64 Kalas of Krishna 16 Kala Varna 4x16= 64
    112 Sadhana of Mahadev 7x16= 112
In a Gurukul System where Education was taught on Bhiksha Siksha Diksha i.e. imbibing knowledge with humility than Ahanakar students would visit neighbouring village one by one to collect Bhiksha and their overall Interactions to the people along with their inclination towards studies and skills being taught would define their Pravitri. Living and residing in the Garva of Gurus the students would display their instinctive attributes towards each Varna and through their proficiency they would be allocated a certain Varna at their Graduation by the Guru's. If 9 months of Mother's Garva then 108 months in the sharan of Guru or 9 months of 12 years in a Gurukul.

Does he mean to say that there was no caste system before the advent of colonial rule?
If so, then this Manu Dharma had come in to practice only after the British came.
In other words, it was actually brought by the British.
Then how about Vyasa Mahabharatham's, " chaturvarnam mayam srishtyam".
Now he brings in another theory that the caste system is in other countries.
Appreciate if he could mention the names of castes prevalent in the western countries.

If you look at light and diamond from a far distance.. it looks similar ... but when you touch it ..their physical appearance is almost opposite .. light is transcendent ..higher dimension .. and diamonds are hard crystals like trapped souls ..lowest dimension sanatan dharma is all about merging with light i.e ultimate truth moksha ..and every other theory religion is all about becoming crystals i.e nothing but sucking souls and acting like light..when you make someone slave you are actually sucking their soul .. which feeds your ego and makes you diamond...earth is mere dot in this universe..and there are infinite species out of which there are diamond and light species..diamonds are scared of light because they cannot shine in light so they try their best to hide it from the earth ... its like warfare between Narcissist and Empath ..so illuminati and pyramid.. or tower of babel is all about becoming diamond.. by sucking soul.. so you cannot say who is bramhin and who is shudra ... cosmic game is very vast as compare to this varna and stuff...

The theoretical version of varna in Bhagwad Gita and the ground issue are poles apart. Why shouldn't our certificates mention our varna as against caste??? Si by that definition how many genuine brahmins are there in india who got only knowledge but no property worthy of mentioning? Narayanamoorthy of Infosys? Vijaya Mallaya? Sachin Tendulkar? The hereditary caste system has no basis whatsoever in the ancient Vedic scriptures of India. In fact, the hereditary caste system is actually CONTRARY to what the Vedic scriptures teach. Originally, caste was never hereditary, it was originally only an organisation and categorisation of society based on occupation and what occupation you had was, in those ancient times, determined by whatever your predominant guna was ('guna' is a Sanskrit word that means something like 'mode' or 'tendency' in English). This is confirmed by Lord Krishna (who is considered to be God Himself in a human form by many Hindus) when He says in the Bhagavad Gita: “According to the three gunas and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by Me. And, although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable.”
Also, all of the four castes were equally necessary for Vedic Civilisation to function properly. Kshatriyas are the arms, Brahmins are the head, Vaishyas are the stomach and Shudras are the feet. This is what the Vedic scriptures declare and the message is that a person needs a head, arms, a stomach and feet to properly function and that, in a similar way, society equally needs Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras to properly function. Also, the Vedic scriptures declared for the first time anywhere in the world thousands of years ago "Vasudhaiva kutumbakam" (which in Sanskrit means "The world is one family"). Furthermore, Lord Krishna also states in the Bhagavad Gita in Chapter 5, Verse 18: "The learned, with the eyes of divine knowledge, see with equal vision a priest, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater."
Also, the Vedic scriptures were the first scriptures in the world to declare thousands of years ago the fundamental oneness of all living things, for example the Katha Upanishad says: "As the one fire, after it has entered the world, though one, takes different forms according to whatever it burns, so does the internal soul of all living beings, though one, takes a form according to whatever He enters and is outside all forms."

Why was Siddhartha Gautama talking about the atrocities of the caste system in 5th Century BC? Can we be honest about the failures about our culture and move forward into the new century? What and who ever intended "Varna" as a choice does not apply to what it has devolved into in modern day India and the global diaspora. People living in Western Countries are listing their caste on their wedding invitations, so please be honest about what the caste system is truly about: privilege and exclusion. I am a proud Hindu from a so called "upper caste" raised and educated in the "West," but India's flirtation with neo-Brahmanical hegemony is problematic and disheartening to me. Just like our ideas about our origins has shifted from Aryan Invasion theory to Out of India theory, this too is out of India and needs to be acknowledged.

India was never a unity under any hindu leader in recorded history. Even at the time of Alexander it was a continent of 150 raajwara's or sovereign states battling each other. If the brahmin really had the proclaimed venerated knowledge and no greed for wealth and power, then why varna system couldn't prove it's truth over a period of thousands of years, as swamiji saying that varna system was the unity in india. It was was the muslim rulers that united india for a substantial time and their legacy was continued by British. And had the stubborn extremist groups allowed the division of bengal and right to separate electorate for Muslims, india would have continued to exist as one unit.
