I always recommend going to Jizo-in if you're in Arashiyama and want a more peaceful bamboo grove experience. It's a 20 min train trip from Saga-Arashiyama Station. I spent 40 mins there wandering around taking pictures and the only other person there was the Ojisan at the gate. :) Go to the popular, busy grove first and then go to Jizo-in so you can really appreciate the solitude! As for Saiho-ji, I was one of those pre-2019 people who attempted to get a reservation by letter. I applied months in advance of my trip but was not successful - sad for me. Glad you got to experience it!
Yeah, Jizo-in was a hidden treasure that I didn't think would be as good as it was! I think its important to see the busy places so you can really appreciate the small hidden ones. Makes the experience so much more magical. I'm sorry you weren't able to get into Saiho-ji. It sounded like such a headache back then. I hope you get the chance to go back and see it, definitely worth.
When we went it was cash only, and you just reserve with your email. So I just had to show my tickets on my email. Looks like they've changed the website since then. Now its 4,000 yen per person with an online payment to reserve a spot. Not sure if you'd need just the ticket or the credit card to get in... I'd assume the ticket is enough intosaihoji.com/en/nichinichi/
I had no issues with renting bikes! The Kyoto shop in this video is very easy to rent from. The man was very patient and helpful. In Hiroshima and Tokyo we rented from the bike share program docomo. Once you get the app running it's really easy but it can be a bit confusing setting it up.
I remember going to this temple. I mailed a letter to them but didn’t get a reply. Was thinking of how to amend my Kyoto itinerary. For some reason, I had the impulse to check my letterbox as I was leaving for the airport. Fortune shined that evening.
This video is from 2022, right after their lockdown. Here's a link to my video from 2024! I never wore a mask while I was there in November 2024 ruclips.net/video/ZAHQfDpfNwg/видео.html

Hi, Laura. Did you have to show the credit card you used to pay for your reservation when visiting the kokedora moss temple?

I really want to rent bikes when we’re on our trip in October to get around. Did you find it challenging at all?

@@laura7murraythanks for the tip! We also secured a 10am tine to visit Saiho-ji. Can’t wait!

Wow! That sounds so stressful! I'm glad it all worked out in the end. Definitely 100% easier now to reserve a spot.
Thank you for going to the only moss temple Ian wanted to go to. 10/10 worth it! I've never appreciated moss so much before seeing it hahaha!
Not even on our moss walk? lol!
i'm scared to go there as its 2024 and everyone is still wearing a mask.
