If you have the room/height under the truck, a 5 gallon bucket works great to catch and transport used oil in.
I know this is my second comment on the same video the first one was more of a tip.
You made me laugh when you talked about forgetting to put oil in the filter. On one of the other automotive RUclips channels the host and the people watching started back and forth that went on forever. I would say it was a 50/50 split on putting oil in the filter before installing it.
I've been doing my own oil changes on everything I own. That includes all my boats and motorcycles and yard equipment when filter is needed. I personally never put oil in the filter. I tried once and it made a mess of my driveway.
What I normally do is pull a fuse and crank the engine while watching the oil gauge. Once I have pressure I put the fuse back in and start the car or truck or whatever I'm working on.
That drain plug that you showed has been around as long as I have. I really didn't know they still need those. I think before my next oil change on my truck or expedition I might just go ahead and switch up.
Also I thought you live in California. Almost any series of your videos and I watch probably most of them it always is raining. I thought you guys were in a drought. -)
I always make sure to give you a big old thumbs up and of course I have been a subscriber for a long time. Looking forward to watch you more.
Draining your oil when engine is hot is always best because the oil flows better hot
Yes that’s why I ran it for about 10 min before draining
@ Nick
A thought.
Might be possible to drain into the big pan, put small pan under the big pan drain tube thingy so it will overflow from big pan into small pan.
That’s a bit to much lol might get messier
@@FixItNick no mess at all. It would flow naturally.
Did this years ago! Probably the best thing I ever did! Never worry about changing the oil! So easy
I agree!!
Start with your large drain pan under the drain with the neck on it open with the small pan under the neck if the big one won't hold it ,it will run out of the neck into the small pan. And FYI they make drain pans for diesel trucks that hold the large volume of oil that they hold.
That filter seemed to spin off pretty freely if you ask me.....a bit too loose for my comfort. Along with the other tips already given, if you are considering a fumoto valve for your truck, consider the version with the nipple to connect a 3/8' hose. That makes it super easy, draining right into your transport container and no need to use the drain pan.
On Nick's recommendation, I've been using the drain plug for a year. I love it. Thanks for the tip Nick!
Fyi take sharpie and write oil change date on side of new filter.
Alan Armstrong I use the notes app on my iPhone, keep records of all my vehicles, gets stored on iCloud so you’re always covered
Good idea, or you can buy those blank window stickers. Or change filter every 5k miles and oil with filter every 10k. I just changed at 135,000 miles so at 140,000 I’ll do oil with filter and at 145,000 will do just filter and 150,000 oil with filter
@@FixItNick everything is so expensive to do now anything that helps is a big deal love your truck.Very nice for hauling.
Why not write it in the service section of the manual in the glove box? Then you don't have to crawl under the truck to see when it needs done again.
Happy Pappy
😂👍right!?!? Yeah, hard pass. I’ll just write it down in my note-book
I agree wish oil filters had a drain plug they are so messy
Yup
I use one of those little blue kiddie pools from walmart. About a 4ft or 5ft diameter. Works great for catching coolant too. You can't miss. After that I just pour into old oil bottles, because I always use it on something. And if someone asks me to "borrow some oil" because their car is low, I give them the old used junky oil and they're super happy about it, knowing that it's old. :)
Here's a little tip that might help you in the future. You're bigger oil pan I have had one for over 40 years. About 10 years back the screw cap that you train the pan from broke in half. I was devastated when it happened I love that oil pan. Looking at it and looking at one of the courts of oil I tried that cap on there and it fit perfect.
I like seeing you use motorcraft oil filters. Since almost every car I have ever owned has been ford's that's all I use. And I only use their spark plugs and air filter unless I upgrade it to a k&n.
I don't really stick with the name brand stuff for other things. There are some pieces that Ford has gotten it right and aftermarket just doesn't cut it.
A friend of mine is an amsoil dealer and he gets a discount on oil filters. Since most of his cars and mine use the same oil filters we normally split the cost on a case of them. It's highly unlikely he or I would sell any of our ford anytime soon.
I enjoy watching your videos look forward to watching more.
I drain my 7.3 in the same kind of big oil pans you have and it's perfect. It doesn't overflow. Also do yourself a favor and grab a couple of 5 gal buckets and lids to drain the old oil instead of using the jugs.
By the way, oil filters do have a "drain plug" -- It's called a screwdriver. Punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and walk away for a minute and let it drain out first. Also, when you are putting the new and clean filter back on, pull your oily glove off and use your bare hand, and you won't get it covered in oil.
I’d of started with the big one and let it drain into the little one
Why is your sway bar disconnected?
What I do on my 7.3 when I change the oil is take a screw diver I ground down to a paint, hit it with a hammer to make a hole for draining on the bottom of the filter, so the filter won’t be so top heavy when removing it works great. And I just might have to get me one of those valves now!
Next time take the pour cap off the big pan and it will fill the little pan as it gets full. Just place the little one under the pour spout of the big pan.
This is old so you might already know this but the larger pan will hold all of the oil from the engine. Totally full, the pan is 13 quarts, the other 2 quarts is in the filter. I normally punch a hole in the filter and let it drain, then remove it and start draining the oil pan. I also cut the top of the oil catch pan out as it reduces the mess and I keep 5 gallon jerry cans around to put my used oil in and take to reclamation.
You are dry starting your truck for more than several seconds when you don’t fill the filter. Should have removed it an filled.
Nah it’s fine
@@FixItNick if you want your truck to die quicker. 90% of engine damage occurs because of a lack of lubrication. That 6 seconds may not seem like much but it probably shortens your trucks lifespan by 5k miles.
So all the prefill oil bypass the engine oil filter so what the point of keeping contaminants out of the engine if you are putting in 2 quarts or 1 in the filter. It okay to start the engine for several seconds and then shut it off and refill.
Punch a hole in the oil filter let oil drain then remove old oil filter. Put oil on rubber gusket, prefill new oil filter and put it on hand tight.
Center punch bottom of filter to let oil drain. Then remove. That’s what I do.
Now take that used oil, mix 50/50 with Diesel and spray it on your wooden stockade fence. This is a 100 plus year old farmer's trick to preserve your fence.
Hmm interesting never heard that
It works great plus from a Diesel it stains the wood nicely. Great way to recycle used oil plus Diesel is cheap comparing this to Thompson's Water Seal which is very $$$$$
Not a tree hugger , but I don't think that is to good for the environment😏?
What I use to do is get a screw driver and hammer and puncture a hole on the bottom or on the side
Best tech tip i ever got years ago.
Yup I’ll try that, also screw driver can help loosen oil filter if to tight and don’t have a tool
You could even get a drill bit and a drill
Well, I was gonna tell you to punch a hole in the filter to drain it but apparently, I am late to the party haha. I have the same drain valve on my truck and it is very nice. It does take a till bit longer to drain the oil but definitely worth it in my opinion.
I’m not in a hurry when I change oil lol, but punching a hole is good idea
That oil drain pan will hold all of the oil in your engine. I have one just like it. Yes That's what I do, punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter. You forgot to suck the oil out of the reservoir, it's on top next to the fuel filter housing. You have to remove the plastic cover to get to the reservoir. Remove the plug with an Allen wrench. Something they can be a bear to get out, essentially if it's never been removed. It has an o-ring on it. I made a new plug for mine with a 9/16" head, I got tired of fighting the allenhead. It holds around a half quart. I use a brake vacuum pump but you can use a syringe with a small hose, It just takes a little longer. Make sure you refill the reservoir before putting the plug back in otherwise the engine won't pick up oil to build injector pressure and it will be hard to start. I always fill it with one quart. Make sure you put the filter and oil pan plug in first. Then it will hold 15 full quart's. I hope this helps you.
Thanks for the tips, will punch joke next time, but no you dont need to suck oil out of oil pump reservoir
Yes that's true, you don't have to drain the oil reservoir, but getting as much dirty oil out is the motive. 👍 Did you ever check your up pipes for leaks?
Nick have you used that drain plug with the drain valve before? I’m sure it’s a long shot, but what are the chances of it opening in transit?
And as a ton of people are saying, use a screwdriver and punch a hole in the filter. Seems to work well to drain it.
The drain has no chance of opening because it has to be pushed in to unlock and then pushed all the way down to open the valve, it opens pretty tightly,
There is a way... it happened to my F350 (2001) while i was offroading in the desert in southern California. I am sure it was a flock but i dumped all my oil. My oil pressure light came on. ALSO that thread stick up into the oil pan so you wont get a 100% oil change as you would with pulling the bolt
Best deal on oil pants is at Walmart I have 12 of them
Oil pants?
That’s a bit to many lol
@@FixItNick not when your doing 15 cars a day at your personal home it's not lol
At this point. I've resorted to 5 gallon buckets from lowes.

You should do an injection pump oil resivor tune too. Never really gets cycled out with a regular change. Woke mine up alot. Helps on conventional oil especially.
injection pump on a 7.3??? anyways i know what you're saying and no this is entirely false. the HPOP is fed by the LPOP and so its always circulating.
Ordered me 6 different drain valves thanks bro for the info
6?? Lol why 6
@@FixItNick i have 6 different trucks
Just a heads up, tap a hole in the bottom of the filer with a screw driver before u loosen it off
Actually, you should fill the filter with oil to prevent a dry startup
good call
Transfer oil into 5 Gal. with lid take to recyclable center that dumps into tank and you will get the bucket back for next time.
your lucky u have a oil pan left with no holes to protect that if u are in the rust belt i highly suggest coating it with the heavy duty series of JB WELD FROM THE UPPER EDGE WEAR IT STARTS TO CURVE DOWN TO THE REAR OF PAN UP BOTH SIDES IT WILL SAVE U AN NIGHTMARE OF ENGINE REMOVAL FOR THE REPAIR
Sway bar link bolt
Yup yup lol trying to find bolt
So you did not read the label on the side of the oil pan! When the oil filter makes contact tighten 2 1/2 more turns. Your hands won't do it.
Oil pan?? Strong hands are enough trust me I never have leaks from oil filters
Next time you change your oil filter. Take a long straight tip screw driver and hammer and
Poke a hole in the side of your filter and let the old drain into your oil pan. Then no mess.
Nick I drill a small hole in my filter before i remove it, if youre quick, it wont even drip on your drill.
I always use the big one and have my smaller one under the drain of the big one. So as it fills up and over flows into the smaller one.
I live in the Bay Area, and last week was my spring break! We had better weather during Christmas break! Looks like the rain is over for now!
Yes I think we are done time for 100 degrees haha
You could put the little pan under the opened nozzle of the large one and angle the large one with a 3/4 inch board or something and let gravity do it's thing.
Yup
Those valves are the best, it makes it so easy to change oil
So far it’s pretty awesome, just drained out about a quart to add some pro long additive to see if it improves anything
Cool. I use hot shot secret for my oil Additive. I'm pleased with it so far
Shit was killing me on the pouring 😂😂🤛🏾🤷♂️
If you put the bigger one down the overflow would have automatically came out of the spout part of the pan into the smaller one
Go to a donut shop and ask for an empty icing bucket. Fits perfectly under my 2000 F250 4X4. The lud snaps on and keeps things dry for transport to autozone or wherrever.
Don't forget to count the oil in your HPOP!! as much as 2 quarts in the top side of a 7.3. So figure on changing the oil in your HPOP! Total = 17-18 quarts. You have to love your 7.3 to know these things! A good truck is a good investment an worthy of knowing it inside and out! Obviously you love your dually! Looks a lot like mine on the outside.
Thx man, yea I drive around kept checking levels all is perfect
Get a sharp Philip's screwdriver an punch a hole in the bottom of the old oil filter too drain it for a no mess change🤔
Get a punch hit the middle of oil filter after stop dripping spin it off. That how you do a big rig I think your rig is big enough to do that to.
That valve is nice
Just drained a quart to add prolong additive worked awesome
All this draining into multiple pans, back into containers, etc. Just drain it into a 5 gal homer bucket, put lid on, take oil to your parts store to recycle. No problem.
That’s not how it works here
DID YOU TAKE THE FILTER "BACK OFF" AND FILL IT BEFORE YOU STARTED THE TRUCK?....
I always line under the truck with cardboard when I change the oil and my driveway always thanks me. ✌🏻🇺🇸
If you can spin off the oil filter by hand then it's too loose. Tighten by hand the 1/2 to 1 full turn with wrench. I use an old wood spade bit to drill a hole in the filter so it doesn't make a mess.
I do all my filters by hand, never an issue, but I’m strong soooo.... lol
Large oil pan is 16 quarts
Thx, looked everywhere in it doesn’t say anywhere
Good video
FYI
I don’t recommend the drain valve ,
5w40 instead 15w40.....
On large oil filters ALWAYS fill them up,
Do you change the oil on the Hpop......?....
Why not drain valve? I’ll go to 15-40 after this wanted to do oil test results amazon vs rotella 15-40. Yea I filled up the oil filter on my resent oil change video and no I don’t change oil in HPOP that’s a waste of time honestly
Negative I highly recommend siphoning that old oil out of HPOP plus run a little transfluid or diesel thru it.
Plus when refilling HPOP it will overflow into filter so flush thru with clean oil before installing filter.
Be careful not to get any of the water on the oil jugs in the oil
Yes I know places don’t accept oil with water I was trying to hurry up lol
Awesome video man! I started to use Schaffers oil instead of Rotella 6T and it works way better. You should try it! Makes your engine purr like a kitten. Also great mod I will do it to my dually should make changing the oil a lot less messier.
Yes sir this valve will make oil changes fun actually, just drain directly into a gallon can. Where you buy Schafers never heard of it
@@FixItNick They have it now on Amazon really good stuff you can ask around the forums could be a good idea for a video, like send the Rotella to the lab and then do the same with Schaffers and see if it makes a difference. Again just an idea could give you some more content down the line. Again great stuff brother I will be getting the valve for sure!
Drill a hole in the oil filter to drain
The big oil drain pan handle has a screw cap for that reason, you place it on the spout of the small one
That cap is for air to come in when emptying the container, not to connect other pans to it
FixItNick I don’t see how that matters since the top is open. I don’t want to argue with you but do you see what I mean? Put the big drain pan under the the oil stream, then take off the cap and put the small one beside it as the overflow pan
Where's the heater control valve located on a f350 02 7.3
Just a thought...get a cheap ass plastic tarp from Harbor Freight, drive your vehicle onto it for it's oil change. Never worry about minor drips and slops again.
This is perfect lol, tarp to much work
@@FixItNick Well then, we'll have to agree to disagree. I think it saves work in the long run, plus, it's more comfortable to slide around on than concrete. If I'm gonna be underneath for a while (like when I install the exhaust that's sitting in my garage) I throw a furniture pad beneath the tarp. Very comfy and the wife hasn't thought of looking for me napping there ! Thanks Nick for your very helpful vids.
I have a creeper, with the valve I’ll never had a mess again :)
What you do is fun
Ya I enjoy it
Watch the adept ape channel. He’s a diesel mechanic. He said you shouldn’t prefill your filter. It’s not needed and actually isn’t good because the filter isn’t filtering that oil you pour down the center hole. Just FYI.
That’s a good point, just run it a bit and add 2 more quarts
I don’t even need to do that. I just add 13 quarts to my 6.7 and it’s good to go. Never any issues.
So i can see little Nick asking Santa this year for a workshop with a 10,000lb hoist
Haha wife actually approves, I told her if we gonna do shop it. Enter be big enough for my car projects and your flower business, so like a 60x40 or something... but that take a little bit of planning with finances lol
@@FixItNick funny thing, i just put up a 40x60 in my yard, 2 big truck doors and a bench area. its in some of my videos
How come you put 5w40 instead of 15W40
In your 7.3.
The only issue I can see with that plug, is that it projects "up into" the pan, and a pool will remain around the threaded insert. Hmmm. Interesting.
You’re so dumb. In reality when you remove the stock drain plug you see no difference. You won’t be able to remove all the oil until dry.
It is supposed to fill the oil filter before connecting it .. Greetings to you
Yes you have to fill oil filter before install or add oil to engine after running a few minutes
That seems awesome! I’m a bit old school and hesitate using something like that for fear of that valve failing at some point. Thoughts?
It will never
@@FixItNick based on your response and the reviews, I will have to get one installed on my next oil change coming up. Thank you 🙏🏻 I enjoy your videos👊🏻
Cool plug
I always use 15w40
I’ll be doing another oil change in 4,000 miles I’ll see if I can find some good 15w40 in full synthetic, store I was at didn’t have anything thicker in full synthetic
I also run Lucas oil stabilizer... makes the motor a lot more quite..
Pick up a larger oil container. They come in 24 qt size.
Not sure if it will fit under that. I use a 5 gallon bucket. Maybe you can cut the top to make it fit
It would be close but draining a bucket would be a huge mess lol
@@FixItNick haha sometimes
Antes de colocar el filtro nuevo primero llenalo con aceite, nunca lo montes seco !!!!! estas poniendo aceite 5W 40....creo que es muy delgado para ese motor.....a no ser que estes en clima muy helado con temperaturas bajo cero.....
Okay, stupid question time. The link you have for the F111 drain plug - that will be the right one for my 2001 F350 dually?
Yes
Ok true test, so how is the valve 4 years later?
I’ve had one on my 2002 7.3 for 5 years and it’s still good as new.
Nail hole the oil filter and let it drain.
Drain valve doesn’t have a magnetic tip or it does have ?
Nope
5 weight 40 viscosity
It’s actually winter not weight I double checked just now, it’s how thin or thick the oil is during cold temperatures as in winter before engine is started
@@FixItNick my dad was s mechanic for 40 years it was 5weight 40 viscosity when he worked probably changed it in the last 5 to 10 years wouldn't suprise me Pluto is no longer a planet
Just use a 5 gallon bucket as the drain pan. Thats what I do with mine.
Nah lol
I wouldn't trust some punk kid to not crawl under and dump my oil out for fun. Maybe I'm just paranoid though.
5 gallon bucket fits under the truck and holds ALL of the oil
Nik God bless you and your family I, ispic Mach inglés tengo una troka 20001 duly el overdrive parpadea o sea blinking lite no cabía me alegro ver tu video alguna información me da saludes desde Nj
Don’t bother filling the filter. It’s harder to install and isn’t necessary. Also if it was a requirement it would be printed on the box. If I’m wrong and it is on the box I apologize. Peace boys.
Yes I too think it’s sorta a myth, next time I’ll change oil filter I’ll just add 2 fresh quarts to engine
FixItNick I’ve always just added all 15 to the intake. Never had an issue. I will probably do another change here soon. My last change I put seafoam into the crank case to help clean the oil side of the fuel system, I’ll probably add it again for a second course. I don’t bother adding seafoam to the fuel because I run power service diesel kleen in it year round and add it in just about every tank.
Disconnected rie rod end ?
Sway bar link, bern lazy to go buy a bolt lol
❤️
👍
Buy a four gallon bucket
Well done Nick, flaming weather gets us all bro 👍 great idea to put tap in 💡👏👏👏👏 hope that the engine runs sweeter than before all this love being extended to it..... 😉

@@FixItNick sir...... Your making me feel old bro..... Enjoying the content Nick 😀😀
I think you forgot the hpop reservoir oil
No that’s not needed
@@FixItNick i always thought it needed to be done.
Heavy debate. Most people don’t think it’s necessary. I would only do it in tucks that pull heavy or you’re speeding in a lot. And even then only every couple of oil changes. Mostly if anything to put anti stiction additive right into the hpop to lube up those injectors and circulate it into the rest of the fresh oil from the top end rather than hope the additive gets in through the bottom end. people debate how much/ the rate of oil flow that draws into the hpop. In theory if it’s flowing right and circulating regularly the change in oil top end wise would be mostly unnecessary.

I’m actually really impressed with it so far, bucket would be a pain to drain into cans lol
@@FixItNick plumb a spigot near the bottom of the bucket. Then you can use some tubing and have a completely mess and funnel free way to refill your cans. Cheaper and easier than any oil drain pan. Provided you have the clearance to get the bucket in there.

I just use a 5 gallon bucket.
Draining that sucks lol
Winter? meh close enough, its Weight.
It stands for winter meaning 5W 5 is how thin it gets during winter in cold weather before starting.
Who sends there oil to a lab to get tested?
I have an 01’ F250 with 152k on it. I bought it with 137k. I change my oil every 5k with rotella t6 and i send a sample to blackstone laboratories.
People do, oil breaks down different in different trucks depending on abuse, sometimes you can get 10,000 out of oil and sometimes 3,000 from same oil depending on your work
Use a 5g bucket
Then draining it will suck no thanks lol
