- I sold a pair of used bikes to a young couple that wanted to try cycling during the pandemic. And they loved it! So much in fact, they brought the bikes back to me to trade in for some brand new bikes this spring! This one was pretty easy since it had been through my process once before.

I'm an engineer and bike rider. Do I learn a bit watching these vids? Yep, a little bit but I've also been doing all of this myself since about 4th grade. Do I watch far more than I 'need' to. Yep. Repairing bikes, building furniture, making stuff is my Bob Ross level relaxing videos. You are great at making these. Conversational and informational. Great for working as I watch.
Thanks. A good old friend of mine is starting a furniture channel right now! Once he gets things up and running I’ll be sure to make a post. It’ll be VERY good stuff!
You just keep getting more and more comfortable doing there videos. Very enjoyable for some reason. Thanks.
You're work, demeanor, candor, and style is very refreshing and dare I say therapeutic. Keep it up!
Thanks so much for your insights.
I live in Germany, so we can‘t easily acquire Dawn, Behold and your other cleaners.
But I found some regular furniture polish (Pronto by SC Johnson) which I used to clean my CAAD 4 from 2001.
All shiny and looking beautiful, thanks for this :)
Awesome that you wear a REAL watch!
I love those casio watches, particularly the A158WA-1 (which I think is what he's wearing?). Such a timeless style, and ultimately still the most practical watch.
@@Splode_ I love Casio watches too. My favourite are any metal variations of the classic F-91W (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_F-91W). Those things are bullet proof. The only problem I have is that mine is a bit scratched up from all the times I have worn it doing DIY. I was praising Casio to the skies with a Japanese bloke I work with and he GAVE me his old one (in mint condition). I wear the good one for special occasions. I was trying to find a video on how they manufacture the metal straps. They are indestructible.
Andy, in case you don't know, there are two types of grease injection needles. A Bearing Grease Injector Needle for injecting grease past seals or into CV Joint Boots, and a Grease Nozzle with a rubber tip to direct grease into crevices. Both would get some grease through the crevice onto the nearest bearings. Auto parts stores have them. I use the needle more. Works with a regular grease gun, so you'd have to dedicate a gun, or syringe which could take a Zerk fitting, to Phil's Grease, which wouldn't be different from your syringe. Great videos, and very much like your Regular Bikes for Regular People vibe. Hope all is well,
This is great information, for more than just Andy - thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!
@@Splode_ All for the greater good. You're welcome.
I’ve got some new bikes BUT I still have my 1988 Bridgestone MB-3 mountain bike that I bought new back in the day. Mostly doing commuter duty now, but it’s a JOY to ride. Easy to work on too.
Also, if you’re looking for grease syringes, Radar Laboratories makes the LoobToob with different tips. Highly recommend!
Thanks for the excellent content. I have fixed-up a few 90's Bridgestones that were neglected and got a second life. A CB-1 that I put a tall stem and comfy seat and traded to a friend for a couple of Phish tickets, A RB-1 that I turned into a "street-fighter" commuter, and a MB-3 that I put drop bars on and commute with in the winter. Great frames! I think that the NB-26 was the last generation of the CB (city bike). 1993. And NB allegedly stood for "no brainer".
Definitely back in action now!! Love this stuff man!! As you know this bike will last another 10-20 years easy... if they work.. they work... for years..proper Is maintenance is key👌
Another bike ready for its next 30 years of use. They sure seem to last longer than a lot of cars.
All I'll say is Park GG-1, worth it's weight in gold.
Except Park Tool charges you gold prices for the blue paint and company logo. You can buy the same gun without those things for half the price.
NB stands for New Bike. NB 26 was introduced into the Bridgestone Line up mid-season back in 93. You won't find this in their catalogue. It was an entry-level comfort bike.
I know you dislike store brands, but I bought one in 1972 (from Canadian Tire) that was secretely a Bridgestone, with SunTour slant pantograph (but not index shifting). Loved it but lost custody of it when my ex gave it away. Recently, I needed a beater bike and I bought one, also from Canadian Tire. It is a hard-tail that gets me from A to B. Don't know if I'm a curmudgeon or just a rider by your criteria. I discovered that I could get to my appointments from home quicker on my beater bike from home than walking from my office.
Dawn Powerwash is magic! Not just for your dishes anymore.
Release them - and if they (the bikes) come back, they love you!
Wow...Bridgestone! I had my first "built bike" made in 1975 in Boulder, CO. I was 18 years old at the time (really? yoikes!) I bought the frame in Denver and built it in Boulder with 100% Campagnolo parts. What a great bike. I still owned it (and the four other bikes I'd bought since then) when I lived in Paradise, CA. Welp, the entire town burned down in 12 hours (intense that was...just running through the fire with literally just the shirts on our backs). The bottom line = that bike (and everything else) burned up. Shame that...
you are correct on time saving on hubs etc., the more you know the more you can differentiate between crucial and non crucial
Your videos are the best, I learn so much! I primarily volunteer to fix bikes up at a local Co-op, as well as my own bikes. Occasionally I flip bikes. I have learned so much from your videos, Thank You, I am on a fixed income but I promise if I have a couple of good sales I feel like I owe you a portion of it! Thanks again, and I look forward to your next video!
Since you mentioned that the bike was left outside i would take that rear derailer and soak overnight in distilled vinegar then lube it and try again. Its worked for me before.
"Locknut Monster" was funny donchaknow.
Andy, can you show us how to check out the drivetrain and determine when to change chain, sprocket and crankset?
I have a 15 yo commuter with about 40,000 km, new chain and sprocket but can't tell if I need to change the chainrings.
Ope, dropped the triflow bottle!
That's for the RUclips algorithm.
Sometimes I stand a few feet behind the bike and eyeball the rear derailer to see if the cage or anything got bent.
Been watching your channel and videos for a while. I enjoy your videos thanks! We've seen many shop videos, and they are favorites for sure. Was wondering if you can show us your showroom? I'd like to see a tour of the sales floor and all the things you have for sale. If I've missed one you've already done, please forgive and point me to it. Thank you.
I second this. Give us the tour! Your channel really feels like home to me. You‘re doing a wonderful job. Keep it up Andy!
Hey thanks for mentioning the bike stand and listing the link! You definitely listen to your fans (yes....we are fans) 😊
I could have used a dork disk twice in the last month. My brand new super fancy electronic rear derailleur did not have the limit screws set properly by the manufacturer, the first steep uphill ofc had the chain fall off violently on the inside. Lots of nasty sounds and a scratched hub. A few weeks later I had a small crash and slightly bent the hanger, next uphill led to more nasty sounds and more scratches.
Most serious “cyclists” have no idea how their fancy bikes work and should be using spoke protectors
AeroDORq disc™ saving 0.03watt over a 40km TT @ 40kph! A similar upgrade like your $500 carbon ceramic monoplate oversized pulley wheel, but at a fraction of the cost!
Thanks!
I can appreciate the desire Bike Farmer has to accommodate his clientele but I just die inside every time he slaps one of those seats on an otherwise fine, maybe even fun bike.
Saw a video of someone proposing not to use normal furniture polish but wax polish, because the normal funtiture polish contains Silicone, which dosen't work as good as wax on wood and it is hard to get rid of later.
I hear you about only doing what is needed on the bike to get it mechanically working. All the other things are nice, but as you mentioned, if you have the time. Great vid! I enjoyed it!
I get a lot of junkers, mostly street discards. I have rebuilt so many hubs, front and rear. Total tear down, clean and buff everything on the wire wheel. You do all that and get it adjusted right with a throughly cleaned wheel you feel pretty good.
It’s a great hobby for sure!!
@@bkefrmr I rebuild and flip for fun and profit.
I can relate to your pragmatic approach to getting bikes back on the road, and the folly in trying to restore old bikes for an actual profit. My last $100 bike (97 Gary Fisher HKEK) took about $300 to spiff up, not to mention about 6 hours of labor. I'm counting new bars, pedals, pads, stem, grips, cables, housings, tires, full hub service, seatpost polishing, etc, etc. I swapped the 8 speed rear end for a 9 speed cassette, derailleur, and chain from the parts bin I didn't count. At the end I could probably sell it for a good $200, but the real point was to get a great around town comfort bike full of nostalgia. I'm impressed you manage to make any money, and applaud your restraint.
I’ve bought, sold and given away four Bridgestones over the years. All were great bikes. I still have a MB-1 that I converted into a drop-bar “gravelish” bike. Until now I had never heard of this particular model, so thanks for expanding my knowledge. Park Tool makes a nice one-hand grease gun that would out-perform your syringe. Can’t remember what it cost me, but I’ve been using it for a few years. Keep up the good work!
Lock Nut Monster...😊❤
As one who has “worn” through a few bikes over the years I have to say most maintenance is unnecessary when rode everyday. Worn to replacement; )
If you can get your hands on the 93 catalogue, it's a work of art. No photographs, just illustrations.
i remember having a hard time (as kid) removing the dork disc without any tools...
Could you sell dork discs in your merchandise maybe with Bike Farmer on them
Hey i did the same with the syringe. I suggest to try cutting the tip a bit, it made it easier to flow.
Andy loves bikes so much, he never "works" a day in his life.
I'd wear something like "I'm bike dork(disc)" t-shirt. maybe the disc just slightly different colour than the fabric.
Maybe something like "Don't Disrespect The (Da) Defender Disc" would sell when put on t-shirts lol.
Jagwire canti pads are fantastic for the price, so soft, cheap and grippy, good job Jagwire!
Thanks
Thanks hey!!
I had that issue with old paint in the top of the stand, too. Just cutted a paper box to separate the stand from the the cables and other parts of the bike and paint with black spray. Easier and faster than pull all the things off. Just the way we like it.
Nice flip,very nice everyday rider!😉👍
Barrel adjusters are there for fun too. That's how the average biker experiments and does"fixes" too.
Need small stickers like this !!!!!
#DRKDSK
@bikefarmer. Your videos are fantastic. I used to be a fan of @BikeMan4u. He used to do livestreams as well on Saturday's where he showed all the customers coming in for tune-ups. I used to love them. I would get my bike stand out and tune-up all my daughter's bikes at the same time.
(addendum: I like that compressor which is plumbed into the wall. Cool. 🙂)
It's taco time!
Cassette lock ring was way too loose! Probably the last guy to work on it! 😉
I asked Andy about bike stands even though he promotes Park Tool. Thankfully my local vintage bike shop had a Park Tool stand and took me to the back to see his model ( affordable and funtional). Lastly i left the store and gave Bike farmer a big plug.
I once had my chain go over the rear sprocket into the spokes. I was peddling hard going up hill and the chain made a big mess and broke a few spokes. I had a long long walk home with my head down to think about things.... I'll still never use a dork disk but a shirt would make me feel better!
But a free "dork disc" is what you need.
oshkosh here thanks for videos. Love them
Digging the Casio!
Like the watch - lol! Looks like one I had many years ago. Is that a Casio?
i would have just slapped some black spraypaint on those bars tbh.
Every rear hub service, he pisses off a certain actor. I like it.
Love my RB1!.
Cool channel.
Can Tri-Flo make the bottom of their bottle a little less round please? I have to store mine in a coffee cup. (Because my floors don't need oil.)
The valve stem isnt aligned with tire logo😂😂😂😂😂
Bought a gates belt, game changer.
I've got a Bridgestone MB1 I'm thinking of letting go of.
MB-1 & MB-2.
Best of luck, BikeFarmer, with making dork discs cool again. And you're sponsored by Park Tooks, cool, but why not Behold, too? 😀
What are the glasses you like for riding with the rearview mirror? Thanks.
Do "Super Thanks" go straight to his heart or his stomach - can't remember?
I know you use that dawn powerwash stuff. Whats your opinion in using diluted simple green for bike cleaning? Have you ever used it?
Depending on how dilute, it can damage anodizing.
Which Giants did they buy?
You're probably thinking what I'm thinking... Did these ppl DOWNgrade? 😂
You have to do some handcicles or handbike if you find some
Nice video as usual.
Your affiliate links are for large quantities: it is unlikely that people will buy so much at a time. Example: furniture polish: I got just one can instead of the 6 in your link: do you make any money out of this separate link? same for Dawn, big pot of grease...
Also Tr-Flow is too expensive of a product when you can just use basic oil, or WD-40 if you need fluid penetration.
It has always amazed me that a person (who doesn't own a business) tells people how to run theirs. Unless you're paying the bills, your comment is not needed about how they should run their business.
I'd buy a bike farmer dork disc 😆
Is there an affiliate link for the tires?
A new bike is not an upgrade from this.
Not unless the new bike is 10x more expensive. A dream come true.
Truth
You'd be surprised how much difference a suspension fork can make. And unfortunately, this bike seems like it has a 22mm threaded headset which basically means you can't get a decent suspension fork unless it's a really old one (and really freaking hard to find in decent/serviceable conditions).
I do not think most people need a suspension fork.
Usually suspension means loosing watts that could have been speed.
Wider tires are often better than suspension.
I will only buy a dork disc if it is a branded Bike Farmer product.
Best thing you can do is go bike riding!
I think this bike was worth the 15 mins to sand and paint the bars and stem! It’s all about first impressions and that may sway some people away from a great bike.
I heard giant was going to start selling their bikes at Dick's Sporting Goods. Is that going to affect your business at all do you think? I wish we had a bike shop like yours in our area. The ones close to us seem to be uppity bike snobs not for regular people.
I don’t think people to go big box stores vs small bike shops for the brands necessarily. The people who would go to the big box store anyway, don’t know or care about brand all that much.
Hey.. your channel is awesome! Would like to know what you believe is the toughest bike and components?? Like zombie apocalypse survival bike??
Electroforged probably
How do we become a member?
Have you considered selling merchandise?
😊🚲
hi i had recent customer one the cheapo Walmart type bikes i don't normally deal with them anyway rear wheel all-over place it supposed have 9 bearings per side had 7 in one 6 in other poor lady had been riding it like that totally trashed the hub lucky i had spare for her but omg the quality control on those cheap bike is discussing and dangerous
I don't understand the hate for dork disks. "If you regularly inspect and maintain your bike you'll never need it" - Ok sure, but surely having it as a backup just in case is reassuring? If you never crash your car you don't need airbags, but I'm sure glad I've got them.
And that's ignoring the fact that the vast majority of bike riders are not inspecting and maintaining their own bikes - which is not even necessarily a bad thing, more people on bikes is good. We don't expect all car drivers to be auto mechanics, why should all bike riders be bike mechanics?
At least from what I understand on the matter, from related channels like Berm Peak(formerly Seth’s Bike Hacks), “dork discs” get the heat that they do not due to their functionality (or lack thereof), but for what they represent re: the bike industry’s direction over the decades.
Like it got pointed out, if that rear derailleur has been correctly set up and a bike’s owner is performing good preventative maintenance, then you’ll never need it, if at all. But ever since bikes went to the department store model (and later, the direct-to-consumer model), a lot of the necessary knowledge to prep and maintain a bike has gotten “lost” and consumers think (and treat) bicycles as more disposable/unable to be repaired than they actually are. Case in point - rear derailleurs. Far easier to just slap a dork disc on instead of getting a consumer to sit down and properly adjust that derailleur itself
any links for the tires and saddle from giant? OPE!
the syringe is a good idea, poorly executed. Use a smaller pipe to lower the flow rate of the grease.
Your intro music sounds kinda sad, at least I think so.
Wax up those pedals good. The slicker, the better! lol (Dead customers can't return used bikes.)
There are many old bikes worth your money, but not a bridgestone. Buy a bridgestone tire instead, if you want spend your money.
Unsubbed cos you banned me from your chat for telling the truth. Enjoy your begging.
Aw, you were still here making friends and influencing people? I'll miss your reasonable, convincing input ever so much!
What did you say to get banned?
@@itsacorporatething Based on how they interacted with me in the comments on a previous video, I'd guess they were being a vicious little flame-warring troll again.
@@mattgies his allowing your disgusting lies to stand is another reason I unsubscribed. He's just a beggar & you're a creep.
@@itsacorporatething I gave genuine, real world advice, from myself who has cycled for 50 years, which I learned from my grandfather, who was a railway engineer & cyclist, on how best to maintain bicycle drivetrains. They will last for tens of thousands of miles if well lubricated/cleaned, because the chain & sprockets wear together. Chain stretch devices do not give meaningful info & are just an excuse to sell more chains that do not need replacing.
Also, cheap high viscosity motor oil is as good a chain lubricant as anything else, & better than most, especially if you ride in bad weather a lot.
This is an absolute truth, but this truth did not suit his agenda so my comments were deleted, & I unsubscribed.
You know, if you used car wax it protects paint from UV damage. I realize that you only have these bikes for a short period of time vs your costumers. But maybe suggest it to your customers?
Turtle wax cheap and effective
@@steelisreal4313 I agree, they even make a quick wax spray version that is great.
@@Tightt88 I'm too cheap to buy spray until I run out of regular 😂
@@steelisreal4313 true, the OG is cheap and better. The quick wax is just quicker.
I think those Dork disks seem to be the part on the bike that seems to get blasted by the UV. The plastic turns yellow and cracks.
