- Commenters wanted me to build a bike out of the Splatter Painted Stumpy frame I stripped in my last video, and I found these cool old vintage MTB Wheels with SNOW WHITE HUBS! And I had some studded tires laying around that I'll never use because riding bikes in the winter SUCKS! But, what the heck, I'm a sucker for mediocre content, so SNOW BIKE IT IS!
This was a really tough build and an even tougher edit. Things get really weird with this one! I love how it turned out. Have fun and wait for the end!

You’re really coming into your own as a storyteller. I know there was a comment above about the music being weird, but I felt like the choice of music did a good job of matching the mood and circumstance at each moment in the video. Also, keep up the 80s movie references.

At first I thought he was talking about White Industries hubs! They're the only nice thing on my single speed, that's really not much better than this.
I found them rattlecanned on a bike left behind our shop! Cut em out, Cleaned em up and built em into some absurdly baller wheels.
I about died when you were rubbing in the grease on the rust and Blanche got all hot and bothered. 😂 Awesome!!
I’ve built sooo many single speed beaters just like this over the years.
Always tried to do it as close to free as I could.

Winter bikers are a different breed entirely
This was an absolute pleasure to watch. Great choice of music and some parts even had an ASMR vibe to it.

I got into mountain biking in 2019, road biking in 2021 and started learning bike maintenance and generally working on bikes this year.
In these cold days with lots of salt on the streets and without a bike like you built in this vid, watching your content helps with the withdrawal symptoms :)
Everything about how you overhauled and swapped the axle on the snow hub was perfection. Reuse everything. Struggle to adjust the worn cones. It's for a winter bike after all

Good build sir! From a MN neighbor and winter bike rider, consider two things. Install your grips using compressed air instead of lube spray (?). Easy and your grips stay put. Try a 29er front wheel with the 26" rear, AKA the Mullet if your brakes can accept the larger wheel, or use a 29er fork. The slightly larger front wheel slackens the geometry slightly and makes the handling in deeper snow very stable. Keep the rubber (and studs) side down!
Back in '08-'09, I commuted 8 miles each way on studded tires (tires made in Finland). Never fell once, despite the heavy effect snow and sub-zero temps up in NE Ohio.

glad i found you on “path less pedaled”…i agree with you about the insanity regarding newer bikes and components…im an avid biker and sailor, and keeping it simple is my motto…of course, things you choose to do must work very well, and most often do a better job than the latest and greatest gizmo…
here’s a theory that might interest you…want to know what i believe is driving the e bike market?…people who don’t know to put air in the tires, or oil the chain of their pedal bikes…they get on their $750 hybrid that’s been parked for 6 months, and get winded riding it a half block away…most people really don’t realize that a good bike should be fairly effortless to ride…
i found a used discontinued walmart bike that i had been interested in for a long time, because of its large, beefy, aluminum frame with 29” wheels…stripped it of all crappy components , and took it down to bare aluminum, and leave it this way…added nice wheels and 65 psi hookworms…changed bottom bracket and group set…added a 54 tooth chainring…best thing i ever did was buy a brooks B17 leather saddle…many more upgrades…but i ride it like a road bike, and average 20mph on my usual 30 mile route , but also so comfortable for just cruising around the lake …i don’t need or want any other bikes…
but unlike you, i don’t lack vision…i just lack good vision…: )

Awesome video!!! I love frankenbikes!!! I prefer them over anything new. I work at bike shop and ride the oldest bikes 😊. Been at it for over 30 years!!! Can’t believe I got this far fixing bikes:-). It has its ups and downs but i love it. I love that you fix and sell bikes to the everyday people!! I do appreciate high performance bikes but everyone should be able to afford a good bike!!! No matter what kind of riding they do. I have gotten pretty jaded by all the different types of riding disciplines. I like to keep pretty simple and just go and ride!!!
Only thing left to do is pair it with the most expensive bike lock known to man.

My kinda build. BB Ross Mt Washington toast and stuck in. Sliced the shell and pried it out. C clamped the bb shell around the new one and welded the shell back together. Rode that one 2 years including a 400 mile tour. Even the crackheads showed no interest it was so ugly!

It is your “good friend” that lacks vision as he/she can’t see what a valuable guy you are. It was fun watching the rebuild from here in wintery UK. When I see an old bike I want it brought back to life so you do great work in my opinion.
The worst ideas always make for the best content.
Also, for a winter test ride, that had a distinct lack of testing how quickly you could brake without eating sh!t.

I'm in Milwaukee. i built my winter bike about 2 months ago from a Schwinn Curcuit that a friend gave to me. I stripped it down to just the frame and used all my left over budget parts from my daily bike. Slapped a 2.30'' 27.5 studded tire on the rear and 2.9'' 27.5 tire up front (not studded since I didn't feel like putting any money into this bike I already had the 2.30" studded tire, but it does have some VERY serious knobby tread), along with a cheap bucklos lutu air fork and a Box 4 groupset. I haven't actually ridden it yet because we've gotten exactly like a quarter of an inch of snow so far, lol.

I love this. I have literally made exactly the same mistake with the axle spacers and dishing when changing axles and it makes me feel so much better that professionals like yourself have the same problem because measuring just seems like to much of a faff.

great build, I feel simple is better for inclement weather bicycles.
Nothing is better, simpler and more reliable than a fixed gear in winter. You can sense tire traction with your feet.
Fixed gear offroad is more fun than should be legal. Read Sheldon Brown!

I have watched a lot of your videos and I enjoy the sort of Bob Ross theme you go for, this one felt different. I know you said that in the beginning that the editing was funky, but I’m only 8 minutes in and, I’m not trying to be negative but I know you’ve mentioned you like feedback….I’m not really vibing it. It’s fast it’s slow it’s fast it’s slow. Lol. I like the mellow vibe… just my $0.02
In a recent poll I took in the community section, only a very small percentage of viewers like the quiet stuff. I also like the quiet stuff. But they all kinda take on a life of their own depending on my energy levels. The second half of this one gets pretty quiet, fwiw

Rust is the continuous weight improvement program that the manufacturer spec'd in after it leaves the factory. As you ride it more it gets lighter. Soon it can beat the Specialized Aethos.
I never realized that beausage was such hard work...Another Zen moment....I already miss the Bridgestone.
In the workshop I worked at the following held true. "we don't use hammers" but you do. Just not infront of the customers. Drop something on the floor at least up to three times a day. You will hate white bikes. I know it's bike racisim but when you have to clean them ... Almost all kids bikes are a pain in the rear. Apart from Isla bikes. A bike will just come in for just 'one' thing. But although you get the 'one' thing sorted it almost certainly could do with a service. Never ever say before starting work on a bike ' this won't take long '. The majority of the time you are spending more time on a bike than a customer paid for. Don't ask me how this works. The really bad state of disrepair of some customers bikes and how they ride / don't have an accident still worries me. Bikes really can drive you mad at times. That is the time to walk away and have a cupa tea. Take five ... I'm sure there are others I've forgotten.

When you get really frustrated or mad, just throw a wrench at the wall, step away, drink a beer. Go outside and yell at the sky.
I'm old fashioned. I try not to cuss when women and children are in the shop, but it really helps.
Press fit bb’s. I’m so glad from watching experienced mechanics working on press fit bb’s I didn’t have to do them. Drove them mad too.

It's literally and simply more job security for mechanics such as myself, just like lots of other overpriced 'tech'.
Don't buy soon to be dumpster filling. It seems like (not so) common sense.....

This is the bike build I've been wanting to post on RUclips!! Unfortunately my bad buying decisions and wonky order in which Ive got the stuff means I got everything odered to build my bike, I currently have a whole bunch of parts that are totally useless until the crucial bits come in. Looks like my bike will only be ready 2nd week of December and it'll be a post build show and tell... Lot's of your ideas are in line with what works here in southern Quebec... Similar conditions I'd say!!
Man after my heart! I ride all winter too. it's my mode of transportation. I retire my 700c Vintage American Phoniex Razorback. And pull out the 2005 Trek 3900 with 3x8 and 2.2 Specialized Ground Control tires. Definitely clean up the white and see the red and black paint under it. It's a Stumpjumper Sport for sure...seen enough of them.

Great references, you appear well read. I've been collecting a few late 80's, early 90's Stumpjumpers and Rockhoppers. Couple of them so beat the paint is gone but clean off the rust and clear coat is your friend, I like showing off their history.

I like the tap the spokes and rim with the steel 15mm wrench to seat the kroil in. Gotta remember that tech tip.

I bought a $35 GT Chucker 2.0, the amount of things rusted or wrong on it, It's a great learning experience and detective story.
All sorts of random parts, I dunno if upgrades or just slapped on spares. Everything was adjusted poorly and installed wrong, from backwards seat clamp to discs clamping against the calipers.
It's been a lot of fun, best way to learn about the new sorta more modern stuff.
Same with your vids, the more things wrong with them the better.
The bike might of been a dud for someone else, but a gem in the ruff for me.
Also I love that paint job on the snow bike :P

I created a single-speed winter beater from an '87 Rockhopper last year and it's awesome. The only thing i don't like is the rear U-brake since it collects all the slush down there.
For safety add reflectors to the wheels and maybe lights.

My perfect sort of bike! I've been building SS&FG beaters from junk piles and free stuff since I was a broke kid in the '70s. It's the RIDER, not the freakin bike!
I'm moving from sunny Wackofornia to Colorado soon, where the weather always changes. I'll need some studded tires. You should try a fixed gear in the snow. You're able to sense, feel and control sketchy traction much better. Sheldon Brown was on to something here.

No studded tires (yet) but I have a fun 1992 bright green schwinn MTB, it got a cheap single speed conversion kit on the old 7s freehub & is getting fenders, moto bars & a rack for winter duty

While I can say I have had a lot more issues with old spoke protectors falling apart and wedging themselves places they shouldn't be than I have with total carnage from not having one, I did have a bike come in not too long ago that did exactly what you described, but it also ruined the frame in the process too. Pros and cons.
If you’re going to spray stuff in the frame try Fluid Film. It’s a lanolin based spray rust protectant used to undercoat cars.
I recently tried swapping axles on a rear wheel to fit wider dropouts and it was an absolute nightmare! And it ended up not being comfortable. It is such a daunting task.
Why is it called a 'seat stay' and a 'seat post' if the thing you sit on is called a 'saddle'? Love the Bob and Doug McKensie reference at around 13:30 eh!
Great video love the commentary, althought the ambient music is a bit weird except for the jazz parts, the music volume sometimes was louder than what you were saying and i couldnt really get what was being said.
Some of the music has a 70's porn vibe 😂😂
