  • I'm getting over COVID and feel about as good as this one looks! I don't feel like talking much, but I needed to do something with my hands. I've been tripping over this project for a week. I need to get the shifters and crank and maybe some other bits for a framebuilding project I have in mind, so, sit back and relax to the tunes as I take this one apart.
Check out the other videos all sorts of bicycle repair as we refurbish and restore used bicycles or tune up customer bikes from all major brands including (but not limited to) Trek, Fuji, Specialized, Giant, Raleigh, Mongoose, GT, Schwinn, Rivendell, Waterford, Cervelo, Felt, Kona, Cannondale, Bianchi, Marin, Canyon, Scott, Salsa, Surly, All-City, etc. We will fix skipping gears, noisy chains, flat tires, presta valves, bent rims, numbness in hands, sticky shifters, squeaky brakes, uncomfortable saddles, upright handlebars by adjusting derailleurs, brake adjustments, new cables, new chain and cassette, freewheels, shifter overhauls, changing brake pads, lubrication, adjusting hubs, headsets and bottom bracket replacements, etc. or even just the easy way to tuneup your road, hybrid, mountain, MTB, ATB gravel, comfort or ebike bicycle! Heck you might even see some randonneur bikes for randonneuring or bike packing or touring or camping or single track or rail to trail or bike path style tours with urban cycling mixed in!

I had a 1984 (I believe) Stumpjumper Sport with Sugino AT cranks, Mafac brakes, bull moose handlebars, Suntour derailleurs and the really cool biplane fork. Specialized switched to the unicrown fork soon afterward, so your bike is likely from that era. Bummer that the rear derailleur tab was broken off. Maybe it’s a sign that this bike needs to be a single speed. I have had about seven bikes powder coated at a local shop in the past decade. Initially they charged $95, but the price has nearly doubled because of inflation. Even at that price it’s worth it to me. My past rattle-can efforts pretty much sucked, and stripping a bike frame is a lot of work. Thanks for your videos. I had dreamed of making supplemental income from bike flipping, although on a much smaller scale. I usually buy a junker, fix it it up, ride the hell out of it for a few years and send it down the road, sometimes at a profit.

I had a 1979 Schwinn Sidewinder micro-flake brown with chrome forks, I found in my uncle's bike shop, I think it was 15-speed, it had the shift levers on the frame instead of handlebars like the vintage road bikes it had a seat with coil springs in it. I had it for a year before someone stole it. I got a Specialized mountain bike but I didn't want to fix it and started riding a Gary Fisher instead. I like riding the antique the best for coolness.

those forks definitely are not what are on my 84 Stumpie, nor is that stem/handlebar. brakes are different on mine (Deore cantis), the Sugino AT crankset looks right, the rear wheel hub doesn't look like the Specialized hub on mine (which was symmetric, with a 5 speed freewheel, so the spokes on the left and right matched, one of the strongest rear wheels I've ever had). Mine has a Specialized loose ball bottom bracket, not a Suntour cartridge insert like that.. same suntour shifters but diacompe brake levers. my rear derailleur was a Suntour Mountech (sadly long ago worn out), and I'm pretty sure it was mounted on a braze-on, not a separate derailleur mounting plate. I believe those early Specialized bike frames were made by Miyata

too bad we don't live closer. I could sandblast and powdercoat that frame for a followup video. I see a lot of vintage bike frames come through in the early spring, a lot of builds are for the fixie/single/track type conversion. One time it was kinda funny because i powdered a road frame during the week then i walk into a local bike shop on the weekend to buy something and that very frame is in the stand getting put together.

That may not be a stumpjumper. There's usually an S in the rear drop outs up near the seat clamp on the ones in the late 80s. Try to lightly get the spay paint off and see if any original decals show thru. Specialized sold parts before bikes so it's not uncommon to see a Specialized headset on a different brand bike. I’m not sure if it’s a stumpjumper, but I’d love to know what it is!! It’s the lugs mostly. My memory made me do a quick search and at least the first ones in pictures were tig welded. I wonder if it’s an early Ross(the rack mounts and the dropouts make me think this)? Maybe Bridgestone(because lugs, lol)? Maybe you can do some somewhat gentle paint removal and uncover some original decals, might be a cool video.
