Hey, uhhh, just out of curiosity... if you had to guess, how high do you reckon the cholesterol levels were of the people who recommended these places? Listen, I'm a Californian born and raised who loves a great burger, but I would rather go to Five Guys than eat at any of those places you went to ever again. In LA, there are black owned, vegan fast food options like the vegan fast food truck I love Vurger Guyz, black owned health food restaurants such as Simply Wholesome or Berbere, locally accessible healthy smoothie and pressed juice places like Kathy's Kitchen, or tasty vegan food like Baba's Vegan Cafe. Hell, even the sushi at Uobei is surprisingly great quality for a grab n' go place in DTLA! If you're craving specialty sweet treats, there are refreshing and tasty ice desserts like Happy Ice and delicious sweet potato pies from 27th Street Bakery. If you want the perfect fusion of American donuts meets Japanese ingredients, I'd highly recommend Mochinut in DTLA. It's almost impossible to go wrong at any of the bakeries in Little Tokyo. There's even a hundred year old, family run mochi shop called Fugetsu-Do that's got these fresh strawberry on white bean paste mochi that make my mouth water.
tl;dr Iconic or not, these meat on meat on meat mantra menus have plagued our country for too long. The funny thing is that I'm not vegan or vegetarian and even I'm craving a freshly grated ginger salad from Rock N Roll Sushi just looking at that these deep fried piles of indigestion. You don't need to compromise flavor or ethics for health and variety in LA!
