    Thanks for doing this. It clearly illustrates the difference in the two mics. One is not better than the other, just different. It is also hard to tell in isolation how each of the mics might work in the context of a specific song.

    52A on reso, D6 in porthole sounded the best to me, thanks! Always thought my 52A sounded hollow, going to try the 52A+D6 combo tomorrow for my next set of recordings!

      Thanks Wes! Yeah, that's now my current setup...but dialing more in on the tuning as well as EQ to get me what I need in different recordings.

    I preferred the Shure Beta 52A both on the reso head and on the porthole. And I think it would be easier to get the mixes matched by just sticking with the Shure. The Shure sounded more natural, drier, tighter, more compact, less flubby and resonant/pitched. More a dry attack, some nice click and a good full but short sub. Just a nice punch dry kick sound - job done. Great sounding kick drum btw, but you are right in feeling that the Audix doesn't suit it.

      Yeah, I still love the sound captured from the bass drum I get using the 52a. I currently have the 52a on the reso head alongside a Heil PR48, and then I'm using the Audix D6 further in the porthole. For most mixes, the 52a is higher in the mix with the PR48 and D6 as supporting roles. I love the full, wider sound of the 52a, but that D6 does provide some good punch with a bit of EQ and that PR48 just kind of rounds it out inbetween both of them.

    Thank you so much for the video! I've owned and recorded with the Audix D6 for years but always had to add low EQ to the mix. So, I bought a Beta 52a for the exact same reason you did. This video saved me hours of testing. 52 on the rest head and D6 in the port. Fantastic.

    On headphones The Audix in the port hole and the Beta on the reso sounded the best I thought. The differences are very subtle

    I know this was about the 52 and d6. But let me tell you one combo I got floored by when we did a trial run on a Beta 91 with a audix d6 on the outside. OMG, it was eargasmic.

    in my home studio, I use a D6 in the kick port about halfway into the kick facing the beater and a beta 52 in the port, the two compliment each other super well. I love the clicky attack of the D6 and the body of the 52

      I'm definitely going to mess around with the combination more...thanks!

      @@OneDrummerDrumming imo the D6 is best when its in line with the beater! it gets that nice scooped clicky attack and a lot of sub, its not working to its full potential if it isn't inside the kick

      @@brodyh2895 This, and it is stated in the manual it shouldn't be placed in the port hole...

    I was going to get the Audix D6 but out of the gate it is very punchy and sounds good. I ended up buying the Shure Beta52 because I think is has more of a range meaning I can eq it to sound like a D6 if I want. I put the Beta52 inside the kick and just use a SM-57 on the reso head and I get great results.

    • @OneDrummerDrumming
      @OneDrummerDrumming  2 года назад +1

      I'll have to try an SM57 on the head. Lately I've gone back to the D6 inside the kick and the 52a on the head, and am able to get a great mix between those 2 along with some room mics.

    • @doublepedaler
      @doublepedaler 2 года назад +2

      @@OneDrummerDrumming Yeah man I basically use the SM57 like as if it were a sub-kick. I use very drastic EQ. A lot of other studio guys I talk to are like "a 57 is not really supposed to be used for that". I don't know I tried it one day and because it's not a kick drum mic and has more mid-range. When I use 2 kick drum mics I just can't get as good of a sound because the 2 kick drum mics sound to similar. If you go to my channel and listen to the song "I can't change" which has a massive kick sound. That's what I used when I recorded that song.

    The Heil PR48 sounds great. Maybe try one if you haven't already.

    Great video. I just got a D6 and realised that it has that "kick" as it is pre-equed, sounds wonderful! for reso head outside I use cheap Scarllette bundle condenser mic

    • @OneDrummerDrumming
      @OneDrummerDrumming  3 года назад

      Makes sense! I ended up moving my D6 to my floor tom, and that's been working great giving it some attack on the 18" head. I do want to find a 2nd bass drum mic to capture different sounds with the 52A.

      You should try a ribbon mic on the outside reso head. That's really subby low end. Mix to taste with a mic inside the drum for click vs lows

    The Audix is great for metal when all you really care about is the click sound of the beater. For most other genres the Shure is more natural sounding. I also like the AKG D112, kind of a compromise between the Audix and the Shure.

      Me too...at least with my current recording ability, I'm able to get a cleaner, better sound to work with when using the Beta 52A on my current 24" bass drum that is pretty wide open.

    The Shure Beta 52a all the way much more Attack and Punch.
