There is Genghis Khan statue because China is not a single-ethnic country but a multi-ethnic country. There are over 5 millions mongols living in China and they are considered as Chinese as well. So Mongolian history is considered as a part of Chinese history as well. Since Qinshihuang unified China and built the first Chinese empire in 221 BC, China has been more like a universal empire such as Roman Empire rather than a nation-state, which is very different from european countries today. In europe, for example, France = the country of French people. In China, things are different. The concept Chinese = Han(the majority) + other minority ethnic groups.

The steam locomotives you see at 20:52 are old locomotives assigned to the Linhe railway depot, Hohhot railway bureau (now China Railway Hohhot Group). They are QJ class steam locomotives (Qian Jin, “前进“ , meaning 'advance forward') manufactured by the Datong Locomotives and Rolling Stock Factory (now CRRC Datong) in Shanxi Province. This class has a 2-10-2 wheel arrangement (10 driving wheels), and was designed as a freight-hauling locomotive. The closest counterpart of QJ would be the FD class made by the Soviet Railway in the 1930s. Designed in 1956, the QJ class was the most mass-produced steam locomotive in China, over 4700 of them were produced from 1956 to 1988. The Baolan railway is one of the last railway lines in China that retired steam locomotives. The last steam locomotive retired from this line in 2002. These QJs you see are in storage I suppose, although they are certainly not at a condition that can be activated again with a short notice...

I'm 74 and think in a previous life I might have been a hobo as I love trains and travel. This is such a true look at your country and the sounds of the train are so different than the clicky clack I'm used to in the US. I must say your deserts look alot like parts of New Mexico and Arizona here in the US. Thank you for taking us along on your journey and being Honest about the whole thing

Too bad you could not speak Chinese, one highlight of my sleeper train experience was chatting and sharing foods with all kinds of fellow passengers, sometimes we even exchanged contacts and kept in touch.

God, the interior of the soft sleeper hasn't change in 40 years, I was on one from Guangzhou to Beijing in the 80's.
Except now they have a boiler at the end of the train instead of having conductor cum server to pour you
hot water once in a while. Can't even remember how much I paid for the journey. Those days a few packs of
cigarettes will get your carriage upgrade from hard sleeper to soft sleeper😆

Interesting addition: the Chinese "soft" sleepers are essentially Soviet MECT-36 "kupe" or "hard" sleepers.
The Soviet "miagky" sleepers back in 1980-s were either "MECT-32" (8x4) or "MECT-24" (4x4 + 4x2).
For us back than riding the "MECT-24" (4x4 + 4x2) in a 2 x CB compartment was an absolute joy.
So we felt the Chinese "soft" sleepers being a bit overpriced: they required 1st class base ticket + 1st class "4-bed" reservation.
While the Soviets sleepers required 2nd class base ticket + 2nd class "4-bed" reservation.
Back in 1980-s both the Soviet and Chinese trains had two price levels: one for own citizens, the other for foreigners.
In Russia it was easy to beat that system: I always bought two tickets: for me and my G/F (she has now much more "advanced" status)
In Chine we just told that we are students (it was true) - and in most cases we got "Chinese" price.

@@doc7austin Yes, not anymore. Unfortunately in 1980-s both in USSR and China the opposite was the case.
Often we did beat these by using international EMPT tariff tickets.
Tricks with EMPT (now called MPT) versus domestic "regular" (now same for both foreigners and own citizens) tickets could be still worth in Russia, maybe China - but not elsewhere.
In general, one should avoid the MGPT tariff (between different countries of ex-USSR) as much as possible - that is now the most expensive
20:50 looks like a partially disassembled Qianjin (前进， Forward) steam locomotive, manufactured by China in the 1950s-1980s.

Prior to 2015, China Railway's general-speed coaches had their own colours, K for air-conditioned express which you took, T for express train, and Z for direct express, in red, blue and white.

Indian AC First cars and Chinese Soft Sleeper Cars are TWO WORLDS in my eyes; on chinese train you can feel the soviet influence; on indian trains you can feel the british influence
@@doc7austin A bit of East German influence on both: these cars initially were made in Ammendorf. If you look at the "Ammendorf" cross-section: it seem for my eye similar to American "Streamliners" of 1930-s. Would be interesting to examine the Stadler cars stuck in Baku. They rot there, waiting for Godot (and Azeri approval to open land borders). You know... trains (in particular "MECT-18" CB sleepers) are very-very-very dangerous to bring COVID. Unlike airplanes! 🤣😂
This is a very smart virus: it prefers trains! And only to/from ex-USSR. So the train #20 / #19 looks like: "travel from Moscow to Zabaikalsk by train, de-train, all passengers board Chinese busses to ManZhouLi, in Man Zhou Li they board the train to BeiJing". But... traveling from Kunming to Ventianne or HK to GuangZhou is fine, the virus is scared of the Laotian and HK border.

In Chinese railway nomenclature Z train has top speed of 160 km/h, and in most cases runs point-to-point without passenger on/off in between. K has top speed of 120 km/h and makes regular passenger stops along the way. Chinese Ruanwoche has similar layout to Russian kupe. However Yinwoche has a different layout to Russian platzkart by stacking bed 3 levels high to achieve the same carrying capacity because of running on standard gauge.
And T-trains are somewhere in between ? I've noticed that many former T-trains were renamed to Z-trains.

@@doc7austin Z means Direct, T - Special (or Super?) Express, K - Express. In terms of speed, comfort level and ticket price, G > D > Z > T > K. That explains why there are less Ruanwoche capacity on K-trains --- its targeted customer base is more price sensitive. There is just less demand of the most expensive ticket on the least expensive train.

CR K-Trains use mostly 25G rolling stock with vmax 120km/h, Z-Trains use 25T rolling stock with vmax 160km/h. There are another T-Trains between K and Z with vmax of 140km/. K trains are currently the lowest class of passenger trains, the slowest but also the cheapest. The Z-trains are the top tier loco-hauled trains running on conventional railways. Since 2019, some of the Z/T-trains are being replaced by CR200J push-pull EMU, with the same vmax of 160km/h but refreshed interior with seating cars similar with high-speed trains. The train numbers operated by CR200J rollin stocks are D1-D300 and C1-C999, starting from January 10 2024. As for your question about the level of cleanliness in the conventional sleeper trains, it's more to do with the how long the trains have been running since departure, the age of the carriages, and how well they've been maintained by the different operators.
at least I felt that our older 25G Soft Sleeper car was relatively clean; Thanks for all the additional information; I need to try out the CR200J train in a soft sleeper car hopefully soon.

@@doc7austin Be aware that if you wanna try out CR200J, only the latest CR200J-C (gen. 3 of the CR200J series) with white-green-red livery features fully reversible seats (both 16-cars sleepers and 8-cars seaters) and latest business class product (8-cars seaters). The seats on the earlier 2 generations with green-yellow livery (also included the Laos-China Railway version) are non-reversible. My suggestion is to avoid the very first generation of the CR200J, that features the carriage design based on 25T, which is narrower compared to the later redesigned versions.

The first GDR railcars were delivered in 1957 from VEB Waggonbau Görlitz. It was the personal train of Mao Zedong and was used for 30 years. It´s nice to see that the People´s Republic of China uses the good old Ammendorf technolgy until this day.

@gab_v250 delays can happen, esp. around construction sites; however, there is some padding in the timetables to account for delays; When connecting in China -> you should always allow for at least one hour at your transfer station

I love your videos because they are so incredibly well filmed and you give great background information about the places you are in, Keep up that wonderful work! That said, your comments in this video about another creator seem to be completely off-base to me. Nonstop Eurorotrip read a question he was asked that accused China of stealing technology. He did not say they had. In fact, in his answer to the question he clearly says they have used licensed technology --not stolen. He then goes on to praise China's high-speed rail system as the best in the world. Frankly, talking about giving off "anti" sentiments and clickbait, it would be hard to top your video on an Amtrak "prison" train. You need to chill a little and read and re-read the Closed Captioning of people's videos before what could easily be called libeling someone in your videos. Sheesh.

Whatever he is saying in the video -> he published this thumbnail for purely clickbaiting purposes - to play with anti-Chinese sentiments. I showed to some Chinese friends this thumbnail. They were shocked. Nonstop Eurotrip changed the thumbnail last night. He has a history of doing so. He publishes a controversial thumbnail - and when the temperature gets too hot (and he got his clicks), he changes the thumbnail.

@@doc7austin The new Russian "platskartny" resembles the new ÖBB NightJet. I took someone to the Southern Station in Kaliningrad few weeks ago and she went to Moscow on the new "platskarny". She is from UA, but she already has RU passport, allowing her to cross the BY-RU border.
I am from RU, but since I never had RU passport (only CCCP, than HU, than USA) - I can't cross that border. So I remained in "König"... to make the RU passport, LOL.
There are rumors that from January 1, 2024 this kind of border crossing is finally possible (blame on Belarus, if not). No information is expected until January 8 due holidays.
But at least provodnitsa allowed me to take pictures of the new platskart from inside.
There is one car on the train with "MECT-24", it seem to be in 4*5 + 2*2 configuration - but the provodnitsa of that car was less friendly.

The USSR helping China build its first new railways was very important for China's present loading gauge infrastructure.
China's rail infrastructure before the 1950s was mostly based on British rail loading gauge as Britain built what little rail infrastructure existed in China from the beginning of the 1900s onward.

World War Two had physically wrecked what little modern infrastructure was in China including the rail infrastructure...... So in the 1950s, China was literally "starting from scratch".
The USSR had purchased a lot of steam locomotives and train wagons from the United States in the 1920s and 30s and thus when the Soviet Union built their own steamlocos they were based on American loading gauge and thus when the Soviets sold their American-based locomotives to China, China inherited the large American loading gauge.
That is why locomotives and train wagons in China are so big in comparison the their equivalents in Europe.

@@sams9981 China adopted the Soviet (actually American) loading gauge but did not change to the 1520 Russian/Soviet gauge as what little remaining rails existing in post World War Two China was all 1435 so thus the rail gauge was not changed to Russian/Soviet gauge.

2. In my video I am critizing Nonstop Eurotrip for that headline - that with that headline he was implying that China stole this technology.
3. Nonstop Eurotrip changes the thumbnail of his video - removing this headline. At this time I have already finished producing my video.
