    In the last couple of years I've regularly travelled in both the single and double deck carriages on the route from Murmansk to Moscow and back. Trains are bang on the timetable usually, and don't go fast due to extreme weather conditions in Arctic. Compartments are comfortable, clean and you are given all you need; bedding, slippers and dental stuff; snack boxes; newspapers; free tea from samovar any time you want. The food in restaurant car is not very tasty, it's better to take your own or get off at the regular stops and run to nearby shops. Each carriage has an attendant and a cleaner ! So the toilets (and showers) are always well-stocked. Journey time is around 26 hours. I'd listened to advice from Russian friends who had been before and agree with them that if you choose upstairs it's better to be near locomotive becauee itv sways less than at end of train, but on other hand it's noisier. You get a great view from upstairs, but it's very difficult to climb stairs if you aren't in good health though. Staff are polite, frirndly and helpful, as are most passengers, generally there is no wifi -and often phone - signal too unless you are near a conurbation due to vast distances of tundra with nothing except beautiful lakes, rivers and mountains to look at from the windows. If you take this trip, don't be in a hurry, get off and stay in Petrozavodsk at the Fregat hotel right on the shore of Lake Onega, and continue your journey another day. The Karelians are lovely people, as are most Russians I've met!

    I like Russian railroads. Excellent crevice. Food is ok too. One cannot expect better food on train. I’d say, soups are usually OK. Coffee (non instant), teas, snacks. I remember, I traveled to Saint Petersburg on a train and they gave red caviar. (Of course, some folks don’t eat “fish eggs”-but no one requires to eat them). One thing: everything depends on a train-there are many of them and services may vary. Last time I traveled to Saint Petersburg from Moscow on train “Adler-Saint Petersburg” and it wasn’t particularly good. Service was ok. The crew (attendant) very helpful and polite. But the train was old. So, if you want to travel by train pay attention to what train you choose.

    Track gauge doesn’t always mean greater loading gauge. For example in Victoria and South Australia there is “broad gauge” (Irish origin) of 1600mm that still has a rather restrictive loading gauge.

    In the United States, Amtrak bought its "Superliner" double deck long distance cars because they are charged by the operatijg railways by the number of cars on a train, so reducing number of cars by using double deck saves Amtrak money. Not sure this would apply in Russia.
    With regards to A380 comparison: You can't reduce size of the A380, but you can attach fwer cars on a train. Running 14 early empty cars doesn't make much sense UNLESS that train runs empty in one direction but totally full in other direction, or later that day, ruins totally full. It may cost less to run empty train vs the yard works of attaching more cars to the train. In this case, the passageway between cars appears to be added when the cars are coupled, so coupling and uncoupling cars appears to be complex/costly operation.
    With regards to suspension: on second deck, you always have more left/right sway because it is amplified siince tyou are further away from bogies.

    As always, your videos are superbly presented and keep one's attention to the very end. Tis video is no exception, either. What worries me is that these double-decker trains are packed with steps everywhere and there appears to be no provision for disabled passengers. There may wel be a corner especially for them somewhere on the train, but what if they want to visit the restaurant car? Its seasti ng for diners is up top and if one is travelling long distances this wil be very inconvenient indeed. Fortunately, here in UK we don't have double-decker trains and prpobably never will because of all the low bridges built in Victorian times. Admitedly, the Souther Railway experimented with some odd looking semi- double-decker trains in thye late 40s early 50s but werevtaken out of service within a few years. I think double-deck sleeping cars will be the future and will have a comeback also in Central Europe (please remember, in the CityNightLine-Trains we already had Schindler-type double-deck-sleeping cars, here). Due to the Fridays-for-Future movement and the new "green" governments in Austria and Germany, after the pandemic night trains will achieve unexpected popularity, and the capacities of the single-deck sleeping cars will then be far away from sufficient to meet the demand.

    • @BubblesBub434
      @BubblesBub434 2 года назад +1

      It would be really easy to just drive more night trains though, instead of a single double-deck one. As opposed to during the day, nighttime european rails aren't as congested. Sure there would be some scale benefit like only needing one driver and one restaurant car + employees, but i can imagine double deck cars are also a lot more expensive to maintain.

  • @RB-gh8ms
    @RB-gh8ms 2 года назад +4

    Regardless of the comfort / quality of the vehicles I think the comparison with an A380 might not really work as you cannot split an airplane. But operating a double deck sleeper train with just 6 cars instead of 10-12 (single deck) will still have lower operating costs for the same capacity. So RZD could just shorten the trains in off-peak seasons and replace older coaches.

    No matter how you'd look at it - the TVZ 61-4465 is an unsuccessful model. The problem is obvious - weight. Carriage's internal volume has grew up for about 60%, whilst its weight only grew up for nine tons (64.8 for 61-4465 vs 55.8 for 61-4462 single deck coupe/sleeper car). Obviously, engineers had to save on something - and they've been cutting off everything: noise isolation (soundproofing), shock absorbers, internal walls thickness, etc... Due to this, the 61-4465 carriages are plagued with parasitic vibrations (esp. on second deck), increased noise (from both external and internal sources) and worse shocks absorption, et cetera.
    Not to mention the cabins, which are much less spacious than normal coupes, especially upper beds are uncomfortable.
    Personally, I'm trying to avoid riding those carriages whenever possible.

      Honestly it is not really like this and largely depends on track condition. The worst part about this carriages are lack of space for passenger luggage. Like really. The return fare on the Voronezh train is also far too expensive for that level of comfort - perhaps due to business class seating; both equal a basic (3rd class) fare to St.Petersburg (3x distance).
      And generally, the whole route to/from Voronezh on that daytime double-decker train is quite popular as the quickest AND cheapest link of all to that million-strong city.

    Thanks - I really enjoyed this introduction to the double decker cars. I think I would defintely prefer to be on the lower deck. Did you mean the lower deck cabins were more expensive than upper deck or you meant lower berths more expensive than upper berths? Although the ride quality is better in the single level cars, as pointed out, for the price these trains seem like excellent value.

Even if a color like yellow was used it would be easier to read most of the time. Please, if you can choose another color for the text, or put a translucent gray background behind the text or anything to make it more readable!

    Let me correct some inaccuracies) Standard singe-deck sleeping car (KUPE) has 36 places (9x4), not 32, first class sleeping car - 18 places, 3rd class "platzkart" car - 54 places. But limited series with 32-places sleeping cars was really produced for "Krasnaya strela" and some other famous trains.

      Most of russians hate these double-deck cars because they are less comfortable. The main problems are very tight space above the upper berth on the 2nd floor and a lack of a space for luggage. Russians (especially older ones) like to travel with huge bags :)
      But this year TVZ announced new version of double-deck car (model 61-4523 while you travelled in a car of previous model 61-4465). They have better suspension and more space above the upper berth. Also they are equipped with lower berths that can be easily transformed into sitting place with comfortable backrest as in the most of single-deck "kupe" cars produced for the last 10-15 years.

      One curious fact. Moscow-Ryazan railway has two tracks with left-hand traffic because it was designed and built by English engineers. While other lines in Russia have right-hand traffic. Therefore just before Ryazan (about 5 minutes before arriving from Moscow to Ryazan-2) there is a segment where tracks are swapped.

    Thank you for a nice video. For what it's worth, I prefer the old GDR made sleeping cars to the modern air-conditioned, cramped cars. The old carriages make the right noises and rock in the right way, and there is more space. Double-deckers are ok for short daytime trips. Having the restaurant upstairs is not good for older people, but Russian Railways food should only be eaten if you are very hungry. Let's hope that the pandemic restrictions end soon and we train freaks can can catch up on lost time.

    I think the suspension and bogie construction is the same for both types - sadly, the fact that you are higher up ( i.e. further away from the rail) you will travel further in each bounce or sway of the carriage. Basic principle of levers. There's a video ( a few years old) about Finland's double-decker sleepers, and they were said to be very comfortable. Remember, the faster you travel, the more jolting you will experience on any track that's less-than-perfect.
    That said, for less than 60 euro, for the entire trip? If it was a paper bag tied to the roof of a loco, it would be value for money!
    Do they offer SV class on the services? (Edit) Oh, yes, Car No 5! Thanks

      They decided to changed the 2020 version of the double decker to air suspension instead of the spring one currently using probably due to this issues and normal spring is probably more susceptible to bounces and worse ride quality and weight more.
      Also the 2020 versions had increase the upper deck space.

    Congratulations! Thank you very much for this video. You have filled in something of a gap that was left in your superb series about the Trans-Siberian, for there you didn't take a single double-decker train, particularly on the Moscow to St.Petersburg leg. Thank you very much for your affectionate films about Russia and her railways.
    P.S. This time you've travelled on the whole line built to British standards (with left-side traffic), not just the final 23 km part from Lyubertsy to Kazansky Vokzal (discussed in connection with your Ekaterinburg to Moscow part of the Trans-Siberian). It is a good idea to reflect that in the captions.

    I think the main problem here might be speed.
    It doesn't seem to go much faster than 100 km/h, so even cars can compete with them, not to mention air travel.
    And the tracks also seem to be in not the best shape, which brings down the comfort level. On trains in Europe you hardly even notice you're on a train and moving.
    With this, no modern train and higher capacity will help, as there is no demand.
    Also, the cars seem like they have cut corners in the build quality - they're pretty loud and have bad suspension.
    They should have focused on refurbing older cars and fixing the tracks for higher speeds at better comfort.
