@@CheapCreep This game introduced me to the world of firearms. And Fallout New Vegas introduced me to reloading and the effects of different type of ammos. Good times…
The legacy of the G11 was the caseless round propellent technology which was later used in a modified manner with the experimental LSAT Gun technology. Shame that we never got to see it developed at a mass-market level.
As far as I remember from my basic gunsmith classes back in my youth days, the g11 has issues with dumping out overheating, having caseless ammo you didn't have casings carrying out the heat as a "disposable heatsink", plus there was the Berlin wall's destruction and Germany's defunding, but that's another story.
Could the recent change in ammo developement make it more feasible? To my understanding new tank ammunition is designed in a way that it won`t explode when the tank is hit or if there is a fire. Think of it in a cheek pistol concept.
correction, rotating CHAMBER. The cartridge is shoved down into the chamber, it rotates 90 degrees, fires, rotates, and the next round shoves any leftovers out of the chamber before rotating out into firing position. Its similar to the case telescoped 40mm cannon in development [CTAS40 from BAE/Nexter]
regarding the firerate in full auto. It fired 1/3 of the burst fire mode. It would fire once each recoil motion. while on burst mode, it would fire 3 times for each recoil.
That intro is so cool I swear the sniper rifle shot when it has the fireball animation sounds like they used the barret 50 cal sound effect from modern warfare 2 than sounds like a real shot from one. So cool tho love it
Didn't Ian do a video on this and also mentioned that the ammo didn't do well in humid/wet conditions........For example, rain, snow, submersion in water?
Caseless Amo advances 1. less weight no wasted metal 2. cheap 3. no contamination 5. No Barrel wear out 6. high rate of fire German Engineering Rifle H&K G11 are futurable technology Not suprised
You're theorizing about the likelihood of cook-offs. That was taken into account when the propellant was created, obviously. From what the engineers of the G11 stated, the biggest problem back then was the chamber burning out at an advanced rate. Today, they could likely have formed the chamber out of something other than steel, like a carbon allotrope, which would radiate the heat far faster than steel barrels.
Correct, the cook-off problem was only with the early versions of the G11. By the time the K2 version was made, changes to the HITP solved the problem. In the OSWS and ACAR trials, not one cook-off problem occured after thousands of rounds used.
You guys went FAR with this episode! ❤👍 G11 is arguably the most complex small arms ever built. Want to go further? Go beyond small arms! What about the history of Russian RPG? Hmmm... I'm a gun nerd like you guys..

awesome content cool topic: how come nobody has tried to modernise the G11's firing system and continue to modernise caseless ammunition or come up with something similar. also this is a little off topic but it brings to mind but why doesn't a firearms or ammunition mfg use the modern bimetal case technology of the 6.8x51/277fury and use it to make a better more effective 5.56Nato cartridge. personally I think 5.56 still has allot to offer especially with modern propellent and case technology.
Well the obvious reason it never saw combat with the US troops is because if you ever watched Star Wars, you know the storm troopers couldn’t hit the side of the barn with it…..
I blame James Cameron. If he'd used the actual caseless G11 in his film Aliens, instead of modded Tommy-Guns for his M41-A Pulse Rifles, popular exposure might have saved the program. But in all seriousness, the over-complexity of the design sounds like a deal-breaker, even if political changes in Germany hadn't happened.
Not really true. The armourers and top field military trialists all preferred the G11 for its simplicity of field stripping and cleaning, as well as its combat effectiveness. The American ammo makers however saw they'd go broke overnight if it was adopted, so it was bypassed. But no witnesses to the backhanders of course 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Yes it is they used one as the prop for the “Ach-Mag” or whatever the gun called itself when it was full charged and snipes was like a kid in a candy store
Dear Classic Firearms, do the next episode being if the US military were to adopt the FN FAL instead of the M14, would we still have the M16, and the most common answer being it would be the FN FNC or the HK HK33. And or you can do an in-depth history episode on the FN Minimi / M249 SAW because nobody has ever done one here on YT because of being very overlooked but it sounds very interesting. For instance, the Minimi had some competition with the Colt XM106, HK XM262, Rodman XM235, and also with the proposed 6 mm SAW cartridge.
Well, it sure needed allot more dev time, and perhaps the tech was just not there back then. Now I do wonder if one could be made better today. Pretty sure it could be. But again, would it be good enough..
Simple and easy Answer to what prevented it: Money, or especially the Lack of Money that could be spend by the German Bundeswehr after the Reunification. Today we know that if East Germany( and Soviet Bloc) would have existed longer, the G11 would have become the Service Rifle of the Bundeswehr. But East Germany was so far behind West Germany the whole Infrastructure had to be build up, a Thing which is unfinished Business even until today...
With advancements in materials science, I think a weapon like that would be much more feasible to design today, but you could just skip it and go straight to a personal rail gun.
Unfortunately, Eraser was fiction. We are a long way from the miniaturisation of power plants to realistically make a personal Rail Gun. The smallest might just fit on an Abrams.

I sware I have been thinking of a careless rifle . With a completely different concept for propelling a projectile. That doesn't utilize gas pressures or explosives. Without disclosing the propulsion method. The rifle can have a feature and ability to manipulate the velocity of the projectile and rate of fire. I believe this concept is not using explosive gas pressures. Environments like the vacuum of space would be much more ideal when operating. I have been thinking of many different ideas that I believe are completely feasible to produce. This may sound crazy specially since I'm not disclosing the exact proportion methods. A functional concept can definitely be prosecuted. If willing to go through the RND process. It's really fascinating when thinking of the possible inventions that can be done regarding future innovations of firearms and more.

It's not that the heat isn't being pulled out, it's the unprotected powder going into a hot chamber.
Could the recent change in ammo developement make it more feasible?

True. Bolt: a moveable breech whose movement is along the bore axis. A gun doesn't _need_ a bolt. Revolvers don't have a bolt.

They need to convert it to a laser beam gun

150 rounds seems less impressive when it fires in 3 round bursts.
Much better than 30 or 40 round mags firing triplets. And leaving brass behind.
