    "Make your natural stance your fighting stance and your fighting stance your natural stance." (Miyamoto Musashi)
    Most people overlook the fact that Musashi came at this logically from BOTH directions. Musashi was pointing out the principle that Sensei Ando makes in this video. Not only do we want our fighting stances to be natural instead of contrived, but we want to develop the habit of using these stances habitually in all aspects of life. It's a huge benefit to self-defense AND you are actually doing conditioning training non-stop without becoming a spectacle (like you would if those fighting stances were exaggerated or unnatural).
    I gave up wearing neck ties for the same reason Sensei Ando doesn't wear hoodies or flip-flops. I don't wear flip-flops, either. Same reasoning. You have to decide what your fashion sense...and even your comfort...are actually worth to you. When you're in the closet trying to pick your shoes, ask yourself - am I willing to die for these flip-flops or high heels today? The contents of your closet will begin to change - and that's a sure sign that your self-defense is improving.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  8 лет назад +1

      I love that Musashi quote. Yes, if martial arts is truly a lifestyle, then our techniques should be integrated into our normal, everyday movements.
      And I prefer clip-on ties, too! :) Thanks for the great comment, Ken!

    When I read your how to, my first thought was once when I stopped a sucker punch with my FACE! So what you say is too true. It didn't take me down, however, and actually it was that experience that got me to become a martial artist, so looking back, it was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me.

      Mankind's two greatest fears! :)

    • @stormytrails
      @stormytrails 7 лет назад +1

      Get a tarantula for a pet. I did because spiders creep me out yet I know how cool they are! Snakes, no big deal...because I had a Sonoran Gopher snake until it died. Snakes aren't spiders. So I got a rose toed tarantula, a tree tarantula. Fascinating!! It's hammock of web is so well made that not a drop of water will drip through. All spider webs are amazing...not all the same. I found one morning that I had TWO identical spiders...one was merely the 'outfit' the spider out grew! Like a tank, it lifted its top carapace and pulled its legs out of each arm of the exoskeleton. So amazing. It left behind its complete exoskeleton that I have to say I made great use!
      People actually DRINK piss. Now THAT is sick. If you got shoved into the wall at the urinal I'll bet you would explode into superhuman mode! Keep that in your 'box' to be used on someone who deserves some proper training!

    Excellent tips and advice as usual! Just as I was thinking "in order to protect yourself from sucker attacks you could use these tips or you could step it up a few notches and be slightly paranoid", you've mentioned the paranoid part.
    What I mean by paranoid is something that I've been taught as a kid as part of self defense and that is first of to train awareness, practice noticing details and what is going on around you, never loose yourself into your "own thing" and be oblivious of your surroundings. Second, train to memorize your journey so that in an emergency you have a good map in your mind of where you are and where to escape, look for emergency exits, doors, windows, clear paths in crowds etc. Fast forward, meditate daily on possible assault situations and what you can do in order to avoid being a victim and protect yourself, make that meditation an ongoing habit and combine it with what I've mentioned above so that when you are around people you can have plans ready "on the fly". Such as "if I stand at this urinal, would I be able to see people coming in with the corners of my eyes? If I stand here, is there enough room for me to move, if I'm jumped, could I be boxed in here? If I'm too close to the door, does that leave me enough time to react? If I'm too far to the door, do I still have a good amount of time in order to escape?" etc
    And those are assuming that at least some basic combat awereness or knowledge is also included into the process "what if that guy where to punch me right here/there? Would I have enough room to see him and react, guard, dodge, run, counter?" I'm in a movie theater, what if the loudmouth 2 seats from me decides to jump me if I ask him to lower his voice? I don't have room for kicks, maybe tiny, short liniar kicks, so what do I do with my hands? How do I protect myself?"
    In short, practice and train foresight. Like a strategy game or a game of chess, plan as many steps ahead as you can. Develop a state of mind of always being on guard, prepared, not tense but prepared for eventualities. Now it may be hard at first and seem crazy, but with practice and a good method, it can become second nature. This can really help not only with sucker punches but almost any "surprize situations" where you have to protect yourself. Add some good martial arts training to that in order to enhance your options and tools and it's even better!

      @AndoMierzwa  8 лет назад +1

      That's all great advice, Chris! It's really just a matter of making safety a priority during your day. It's not living in fear of attack, it's trying to position yourself in a place of comfort and power as much as possible. A little strategy goes a long way! Thanks!

    • @ChrisKsan
      @ChrisKsan 8 лет назад +1

      You are perfectly right! Maybe I've expressed myself wrong. Indeed it's not about living in fear of an attack, but rather about readiness. Be ready and aware at all times. Like you've said "A little strategy goes a long way!"

    One good tip that I learned from Krav Maga is that you have to hit back right after you get hit. That will create a solid fighting mental in that moment. Don't be like "Oh shit!I just got hit, ok here is the fighting position", no! just hit back right after you get hit so the other guy won't have that confident.

    I always keep one foot behind the other, keep in mind that the backfoot shouldn't be facing forward which will ruin your balance. For most people it's natural to keep the rear foot pointing a bit to the outside, but make sure you don't stand with both feet facing directly forward.

  • @victorcabral5531

    Another point and the most important one is awareness know your surroundings who's around you what they're doing their body language, I always try to make sure who's around me at all times i look over my shoulder from time to time, or look at the reflection on a window I'm walking by, also the shadows, also pay attention to the sounds any fast steps approaching me, it's not being paranoid with things like the knockout game out there you know you can get attacked any time or robbed or killed don't be an easy target.

    the knockout 'game' started some time ago...when im walking or biking I give others room..if someone looks like a ganger I make sure to be an armlength away...couple days ago I biked past one..sure enough his nearest hand wobbled as if he was thinking about it...being that I had opened a gap, he would have had to have made a move to shorten the distance to walk-up on me or run-up on me giving me time to strike or veer further ... Really good tips on this channel - masterfully put together and face palmingly simple to grasp: I got into martial arts from physiotherapy (for an almost paralysing back injury)... it was the functionality, meditation and forms practice as well as general overall strength and fitness that gave it the edge over gym type or palattes type workouts... I started off with Tai Chi (I was that slow!) - now I do I Chin Ching and horse stances, rolls and kicks etc... ...the recovery was not for the faint hearted though.... but I wish I had learned tai chi BEFORE I injured myself. Also, back to the topic I mentioned in a comment to some earlier video of yours (which leg in front), it's great you said "one foot in front of the other" instead of "your strong/weak foot..." or "your left/right foot...". Nice consistency there. But I'd like to request a video on choosing the lead side for oneself and setting up a default fighting stance. I know one should practise techniques on both sides evenly, but if you find yourself in a combat situation, you should pick a stance instantly, especially when the opponent is right in front of you. Could you make this happen, please?

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  8 лет назад +1

      Your father sounds like a smart guy! :)
      As far as fighting stance preference, you don't always get to choose, so yes, practicing from any stance is ideal. Other than that, I can't choose a lead foot for anyone. Some prefer to load up their power hand in the back, some like to lead with their power hand. Some are looking to grapple, some are not. That's where the art comes in. You just experiment until you figure out what works for you most of the time... then try to make that happen! Thanks for the comment, sir!

    If one must wear a tie, only the clip-on type. The around-the-neck type can be used by an attacker to choke you out.

    I get a middle -of-the-road message from this video, in terms of every day risk. You don't want to sequester yourself in your home to avoid possible everyday confrontations, danger, etc...but at the same time, don't put yourself in blatantly stupid situations. I once took a chance and bar skipped to another bar with people I didn't know. They were all cool, except one of them. She was being, what she thought was "just goofy" and she boxed my ears back and forth. I was seeing stars. I just left, and one of the guys said "oh, it must have been so-and-so again." Boy, was that annoying! At least it wasn't worse. Hoodies seem to be a big no no all around. They raise your profile wherever you go. I was at a bookstore, and a friend who knows me who used to work there was eyeing me. He didn't know it was me with my hoodie up. Then he saw it was me,. You see those signs in stores now that say "no hoodies"

    I've been sucker punched twice in my life ; both times the threat was obvious , both times I minimized the threat . The 1st time was excusable , I was an inexperienced teenager caught up in a highschool brawl I was watching . The 2nd time was much worse , could've been fatal . I was approached by three men during an evening walk a couple of yrs ago . I knew they trouble , I knew they were dangerous but I blew it off . I've been training in martial arts for over 50 yrs , my " over confidence " told me I had nothing to be afraid of , I can take care myself . As they neared , instead of giving them a wide berth , I skirted around one guy closely . When saw him clench his fists , I started to prepare for a defense . I didn't see the punch from the guy in the middle that hit me in the mouth so hard it picked me up & landed me on my butt . One of my canines ripped through my lower lip & was sticking out like a tusk . I didn't notice that at the time because although I was conscious I was too stunned to move . They could've done anything they wanted after that but approaching cars chased them away , laughing , while I got to ride in an ambulance later . Your tips are good ; I would just add , recognize threats , whether it's people or situations around you & take them seriously . After my last sucker punch I'm not quite as casual as I used to be .

    Well, I had a different solution to the problem that unfortunately worked/works too well. From 1st through 4th grade, I used to get ganged up upon. Granted, I started TKD at age 4 (and due to the success, my instructor started teaching younger students), but being on the spectrum, my coordination was lagging. Anyway, I asked my dad to help me with the problem (he is former military, working in the Navy as an engineer aboard the USS Kittyhawk). So, what he would do is strike at me at random times. He would not actually hit me, but he would, at most, tap the point of vulnerability. His one rule was I could defend, but not hit back. After a while, my reflexive defense skyrocketed, to the point that I did not even have to pay attention to an attacker, as my body would just defend itself on its own (to the point that if I am sleeping and somebody makes contact, I will subdue them before my eyes even open). I used to be attacked mid conversation, but my peripheral vision widened considerably (to the point that my eye doctors were surprised).
    The problem is, I could not shut it off, and despite trying to train it out of me, it still has a few remnants in my reflexes. My body would translate even benign movements towards me as if they were attacks, which made being hugged and patted on the shoulder an awkward situation, as I would keep grabbing their hands or redirecting them. First ten years was training said reflexes, next ten years were spent trying to get rid of them.
