  • Today, we take a look at the 2020 BMW Z4 sDrive30i (G29 generation), and why it might just convince this Porsche Boxster lover (and former 991 911 owner) to change his mind about which ~$50-60k roadster is the most fun.
[The 2021 BMW Z4 is mechanically identical to the 2020, so this review basically applies to the 2021 as well.]

I bought a Z4 last summer. Yes, as many smiles as the 911S I sold last spring.

I have previously owned two boxsters and I have to admit the Z4 represents a much better value for the money. The Z4 also looks more expensive than it actually is in many ways it more closely resembles a smaller version of the eight series convertible. I don’t understand why BMW doesn’t push this car more aggressively than it does in my opinion the car looks great handles great and gives you The same amount of smiles that I would get one driving the Porsche. My only complaint with the car is that it lacks the manual transmission which I believe the car really needs. Unfortunately for some stupid reason BMW has chosen not to put a manual Transmission in the car which I believe is mistake. By the way your review on the car was excellent.

A manual in the Z4 would be wonderful. Thanks for the kind words!

There is a manual (in Europe at least), although in base engine 20i model only.

I own one, and agree with your assessment! It's a way better vehicle than people think. I understand that it's not Rowdy enough for those who wish to drive like a Nascar driver. I'm over 50 years old and have no desire to be a Nascar driver, lol. It gets great mileage and has awesome trunk space with the top up or down.

Drove the Z4 30i quite a bit before I got my MX-5 last year. It's definitely a nice roadster, faster and more comfortable than the MX-5, but ultimately I felt more connected to the MX-5 and had more fun driving it. Considering the price difference (the Z4 was twice the money of the MX-5) it was an easy choice.

I agree that the MX-5 punches far above its price class when it comes to driving connection. In fact, I sold my 991 Carrera S a few years ago because my NA Miata provided 90% of the driving fun and connection for 10% the ownership cost. I later bought the ND to replace the NA for greater safety and modern conveniences while retaining the essential MX-5 character. Here's to many more years of MX-5 fun!

@@JamesPlaysWithCars - Yep you’re 100% right about the intrinsic value with the Miata! I love the Boxster but I own a NC 08 PRHT GT MX-5 and it’s amazing to drive. I have the automatic only because it was too good to pass up. Only $10k and just as much fun to drive as my previous 2012 Base Boxster. It’s so easy to live with without the stress and expensive maintenance of a Porsche yet it’s always fun. It’s my daily driver!
