Hey Biz, I am from Tennessee but I live in Atlanta Ga now and this song was originally offered to Sammy Davis Jr but he said I didn't go through the struggles of the ghetto but I can tell you did, and it was Elvis, he knew how poor he grew up, yet he never complained about it, but always told his mama and Daddy that one day he was going to find a better life for them and he promised his beautiful mama that he was going to buy her a pink Cadillac and a home for her, he did both and so much more, there's something special about a man who grew up in the ghetto and never forgot where he came from or how to treat others, many video clips him saying that he learned early in life how he was raised to just be kind to your fellow man and he stated it is no big deal it was engrained in his heart and soul, never forget that he was always a searcher for the spiritual part of why he was chosen to be Elvis, . TCB 1935
Actually Elvis was told he could “leave the black girls home” when he was about to embark on his 6 show Houston Astrodome gig, his first live show, outside of Vegas, since 1961. That’s when he said something along the line that if the he couldn’t bring his girls, he wasn’t coming.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 while I don’t know if any other musician who played at an Elvis recording session are/were black, I do know black piano player, Dudley Brooks, started playing for Elvis on the West Coast in April 1960.

Mr. Biz, you're right about Elvis's voice. Elvis's influences were gospel, rythm and blues, country, opera etc. He listened to everything and despite this persistent rumour that he was a copy cat who never gave a shout out, the truth is out there, so to speak, there are lots of instances where he publicly stated where his influences came from and regularly stated that in his opinion, his old friend Fats Domino was the true king of rock and roll. Whatever your opinion on that subject, there is no denying the beauty and power of Elvis's voice. Thank you. Thank you very much! 😊
At the Astrodome in Texas, Elvis was told that he had to leave the Black girls home. Elvis told them that if his girls couldn't be there then he wouldn't be there either!! He was such a loving person and didn't have a prejudice bone in his body!! He stood up for what he believed in!! You can't help but Love and Respect him!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤!!
Elvis was just that good. There was no auto tune or voice enhancing no gimmicks. Also, he was born in dire poverty in Tupelo, Mississippi often relying on neighbors for food and other necessities.

He could sing anything & he actually loved Gospel. He grew up in a black ghetto in MS & attended black churches. He was way ahead of time in so many ways.

An amazing HISTORICAL interview with one of Elvis' first close friends, a black gentleman by the name of SAM BELL. Sadly Sam died soon after this interview. The beginning of the new ELVIS MOVIE came from this very interview about LIFE in one of the first mixed (predominantly black) communities in America. Black and white boys playing TOGETHER -- didn't happen down in the segregated South in the 1930s and 40s -- it was very dangerous to life and limb for kids or adults. Hey Biz , the inner cities have always been bad , it's not anything new . Back in the days when the early Europeans immigrants came to America many lived in terrible ghettos. Lots of violence, crimes all the time, and plenty oh poverty . The Five Points district in NYC was occupied by mainly poor Irish immigrants. The place was so terrible that even the cops were afraid to go in there. Gangs , killings, robberies, assaults. Sound familiar?
This song shook the country when I was a little girl. When I saw the video of George Floyd being murdered, and how his face down on the dirty street crying for his momma, I couldn't help but have a flashback to this song. Except, Mr. Floyd was carrying a gun, he wasn't stealing a car, and he had been convicted of no crime. I cried and cried. For people of my generation, Elvis embodied America. First, he shared the only music he knew with us white folks which was of course was black rythym and blues. Second, he boldly sang about the plight of racism. He sang "If I Can Dream" after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He pays tribute to his legendary "I Have a Dream Speech". The song also weaves in Dr. King's admonishment to continue pushing against racism. "If you can't fly, then run! If you can't run, then walk!" Elvis echoes, "A man can fly...while I can stand, while I can walk, while I can dream, please let my dream come true!" Only one of four white families, he lived in a ghetto in segregated Mississippi. All of his friends were black. They played together. They swam together. They sang together. One of his friend's sister taught Elvis how to play the piano. They went to church together where Elvis freely danced in the Spirit. IAbout his voice..I've been an Elvis fan ever since I heard him singing Return to Sender on my momma's album. I've watched every live performance of Elvis. I have never heard forget words, but I've never heard him sing off key.
