Hi, from Wales UK, I love your quilts and watching your you tube videos! Watch out for those crumbs though !Our studio has been closed for 13 months due to covid, so I'm quilting at home. Crumbs are my new obsession, I colour sort mine and am way up in double figures making quilted tote bags. Leftovers get used in bottle carriers.thanks for sharing, quilting hugs from Wales xx

When I realized the amount of crumbs and scraps that I had left over after 35 years of collecting them I decided that was just too much fabric to throw away. I spent the last two weeks ironing them out and cutting them to specific precut sizes such as 5 inch square, two and a half inch squares and two and a half inch strips. Anything smaller I cut into 4 in length and will be making strips 4 inches wide to make something like string quilting. So far I'm just finishing up cutting and from the amount that I have shut down I should be able to make in the neighborhood 5 quilts that are full size and three or four lap quilts. Honestly I'll be glad to be done with them.

Hi Pat - I am an expat Canadian living in New Zealand and I bought some fabric from a quilter on a local destash site. I set it aside for 6 months and pulled it out to use it for a quilt that I am working on and by strange coincidence, it is one of yours! It's called Old Blooms from 2003 and it's a lovely olive green with beige flowers with purple trim and green stems. I love it and your tutorials. Keep it up. Cheers from down unda! 😊

I love the crumb blocks! I would make bags to store the quilt in. If the quilt needs repairs, you would have the coordinating fabric right there. Thank you for your videos, I've been mostly crocheting in the last few years, but you really make me want to get back into quilting and complete my wips!

I love the crumb blocks. They do not have to be the same color family. That adds interest and appeal to the whole quilt. Use a navy or black or red or brown, something that is the same to sash and border and they will look very happy together. I do a lot of scrap blocks and I really do not worry about what family color scheme they are in. It looks good when you get done. Black or navy is my favorite for sashing. Have fun.!!!

Your crumb blocks remind me of my grandmother. She would say during the depression “we use everything. No matter how small.” And she did till she passed. She would use clothes as well as fabric from anything to make quilts, she called blankets, that were for warmth not for show to clothes for grandkids and dolls. I still have much of what she had made us. Still feel the love she put in.

I made some crumb blocks awhile back. I didn’t like what I ended up with. As a whole block. So I cut some solid half square triangles and also cute the crumb blocks into half square triangles. Put some sashing and cornerstones around them and made a table topper. It actually turned out better than I thought. A baby quilt was another idea too. But I’m not doing more. I would rather spend my time on other blocks, rather than crumbs. Love yours! Love everything you do Pat!

I am loving watching your crumbs grow back into new cookies. lol. My crumbs are sorted by color and when I just need some relatively mindless sewing I grab one and just start sewing two pieces together for a bunch of two sizes, then add a third, etc. on my pressing mat I have a 6-1/2 in square marked out and aim for about that size. When it gets there, I trim and staystitch the block. I plan on using them in a friendship star quilt.

I love the idea of crumb blocks! It’s really going back to the idea of “nothing goes to waste”. It’s so easy for us now, to quilt any fabric, any pattern or color, but I’m sure the first quilts made were truly just bits and pieces of whatever fabric quilters could find. Think of the flour sacks our grandmothers might have used for quilts. It’s also a history of all the quilts we’ve made, sort of an album of fabric. I love the idea and think these are great, picnic, road trip or just curl up, cozy quilts.

My next goal is to make all Your Home Is blocks in Patriotic fabric which I think would be a beautiful quilt. As with the crumb blocks. I have a lot of those and need to get busy. That dark block is striking! I agree that the lighter block looks better in your quilt though. Crumb blocks are cool. I like to see what others do with them, but they’re not my thing to make right now. I know a lot can be done with the blocks, but it’s just too much for my brain to keep track of, and the last thing I want is more “stuff” so I do toss the strips and crumbs that I can’t cut into whatever scrappy size I need for my stash.

I like the crumb blocks. I haven’t started yet- bogged down with other things. What about a wave of color blocks from dark to light across a quilt? That way you could still do your blocks like your doing associated with the quilts you’re working on, but you could group them later on to coordinate across a quilt. Of course, it would still depend on their colors, but it might work if you had a plan in the back of your mind as you sew the crumbs together throughout the 6 months.

I'm slowly stitching crumb blocks. My pieces are a little larger than yours. I've noticed I hate them until I cut them to size. Right now they're 6.5 x 9.5 but I may cut to 6.5. I'm using random pieces in each block so there's no color story as yet. If I don't have one when I am ready to make the quilt, I may go with sashing to bring in some color logic. We'll see. I was watching you with the blue blocks and realized Norm wasn't there. "Norm! Norm! Where are you buddy? Oh...over there." Whew! :)

There is so many ways to use them and I love having the blocks ready to make quick projects like table runners, fun scrappy borders, pieced backing on some quilts, and even full quilts out of. I did a full red quilt years ago with scraps which could have been entirely of crumbs. So I guess, only quilters can love crumbs. LOL
