Just to balance out those "negative " people I have a friend who, although she doesn't share my enthusiasm , has realised that she can tap into my skills and get items made that are tailored to her interests that she simply wasn't buy anywhere. She is a demon skier who sadly because of a serious knee injury and long covid can not enjoy these days. I made a table topper with a skiing fabric last Christmas that is STILL on her table now and the matching mug rugs are also being used. What a result. For next Christmas she will have a quilt made out of the rest as I had to import yardage from the States to the UK. Boy does it make you feel good when your work is appreciated. So the moral of this story is to ignore those people and concentrate on those who appreciate your work .
Do! Do! Doable! You are certainly workin’ your word for the year. A little over a week ago, I fractured my right elbow. Thankfully only one arm is out of commission. I have a deeper understanding of your broken wrist situation now. Being unable to do what I love is frustrating. So, in order to continue creating I’ve taken on designing quilt blocks and tops... with my left-handed handwriting! It looks so second grade and takes such a long time... but I’m retired and have lots of hours to fill. You are an inspiration Pat. Thank you ❣️
To avoid running off to the side on the edges of tiny squares or triangle seams, a starter or ender piece of scrap fabric will help solve that. That is a very common issue. You are so right for bringing attention to that. Errors in quilting measurements/sewing just keep growing.
Oh my goodness, I think you were referring to my elephants that I mentioned the other day.....Well, Pat, you and this community are SO incredibly supportive that I returned to my elephants and finished 8 more and I LOVE IT! I told my husband (who made fun of me) that it is a good thing he doesn't like it because he can NEVER use it, I don't care how cold he gets! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your support and thank you to this wonderful community, as well.
Pat, once I cross stitched something for my hubby on navy 18 ct fabric. In order to see the holes I put a flashlight between my thighs, turned it on so the light would shine UP into the holes and I sure could cross stitch better!
Oh gosh, this happens so often! I almost don't want to show my Mom my completed work because her color palette and mine are so opposite! I love bright cheery colors, which she does as well, but she hates a light background. She thinks every quilt I have made would look better on a black background. Of course the colors pop, but I don't want all my quilts to be black.
I have a sister-in-law (late husband's sister) who has NO hobbies whatsoever!!! Only watches TV. Yesterday she called and asked what I was doing and I was sewing a 2nd border on the elephant quilt. She asked in a tone, I know too well, "what are you going to do with that?" Told her I might just get it finished and send it to her oldest sister's new great grandbaby in CA. All I heard was "oh.' She can't understand why I love to make quilt tops and I can't understand anyone not having any hobbies at all. TV is just chewing gum for the eyeballs, as her younger brother used to say and I get tired of hearing about Judge Judy, Dr Phil and Dr Oz!!!! Oh well, that is my story of someone who is always complaining about how much I sew. I've learned to put her on speaker phone and keep right on sewing.
Hahaha! We can have a sister-in-law contest (whose is worse) 😬😁😂 My dear SIL has many health challenges, and she does love to go on and on about all her many ailments and aches... 🙄🙄🙄
I had a lady in my guild who would "critique" my quilts. It would really hurt my feelings. Over time I noticed she did this to those whose work was great and the lady was insecure. She had to put you down to make herself feel better. I learned to let her comments slide off me and after all , it was my quilt. What business of hers if I cut off a point a little or my blue was not what she liked. For those who get bad comments about your quilts, first it is your quilt. Look at the quilt honestly. Second, we each have different tastes and skills. If you are beginner, you may cut off your points a little but making that star may have been a tremendous achievement. People should be giving you positive comments.
There was one of 'those ladies' in my group also, she ran off quite a few new members..... She was smart in quilting just didn't know how to be 'tactful'.
I guess my reply would have been. I hear what you are saying but I happen to like my quilt, mistakes and all. I have a person who constantly critiques everyone's work and actually I find that I speak up right after with a very positive remark that shuts that person up. Sometimes being postive after a snide remark lets the other person know just how rude they came across.
Along with sewing I do a lot of needle work and knitting. My sister said to me once why are you doing all these old lady hobbies, exactly how old are you? Guess who doesn’t mind receiving my old lady hobbies😂😂😂
These tips for small patchwork will really help me in my current class I'm taking (Ricky Tims' BETA Gridified Art Quilt). Love the alternate layout = will make a fun baby quilt.
Let’s talk your t-shirt! I need that! Care to share where you found it? Love, love, love you and your channel! I am now collecting ALL books Pat Sloan. 👍🏼
For the leftover 5" strip pieces, if they are less than 3/4" wide, I throw them out. I haven't tried the art collage method of quilting pictures yet which would use up these littlest scraps. A 3/4" wide strip yields a 1/4" strip of sewn fabric and the seams need to be trimmed to 1/8" if pressed to the center or multiple 3/4" strips are sewn together. I am using my leftover HSTs from the Treasure Trove Quilt (5" HSTs) to make the Breezy Days Quilt (4" HSTs) . :)
I read the comment you were referring to & my heart was kinda breaking for her that her husband made fun of her elephant :( I'm so lucky & I guess blessed that my husband seems to both like & compliment whatever it is I'm working on :) I didn't comment to her, but yes, she needs to continue for her own well being :) I've been debating on whether or not doing the Jolly Bar 3 sew along, but after seeing all your blocks-I'm so in love with it. I HAD to have a Blooming Bunch Jolly Bar as soon as they hit so I wouldn't miss out even though I didn't know what I'd make with it & now I think I have to do this sew along with it. I need to go ahead & order the book!! AND decide what background to use. Can't use a cream or white because several pieces are cream/white. What about a light gray to make the colors pop?? Any ideas folks?? I forgot to mention-thanks for the idea of the little HSTs around the crumb blocks!! I've been keeping all of mine from so many projects we've been doing & I love your layout.
I showed my sister Lori Holts vintage housewife with the clothes hanging on the line and she said" that's not how you hang shirts!" Oh well she's just that way I try not to let it bother me but unless someone online is actually asking and opinion about which border to use or something I would never post a negative comment
Two Things, use a scrap square/rectangle of fabric as a 'leader' and 'ender' for your piece sewing and when you want to sew another block without breaking the thread, particularly triangle points, lift the presser foot and slide the new pieces up to the needle, lower your presser foot and continue sewing. This is especially helpful when sewing HSTs together and the seam bulk in the corner is higher than the seam bulk of the rest of the block. Though my machine still gets hungry for a HST corner every once in a while ;)
You could also start a little further in from the corner and backtack if you dont like using leaders and enders. Someone recently talked about this issue and i can't remember what advice they gave
I hold my thread behind the needle until the second stitch is made. Works 99% of the time for me. Don't have to hold the thread tight. Just enough to keep it being crammed down the hole.
I found getting a single hole stitch plate invaluable for my Janome. It still gets the munchies occasionally, but it’s much better. I also use leaders and Enders and insert the fabric right up to the needle before putting my presser foot back down.
I'm sorry, Pat, it is not ok to be critical about people's work, especially in front of others. A phone call later, or a quiet chat away from others. Unless it is asked for. We should not have to excuse this rude behavior. Peoplw who do this are the reasons many people won't bring their work to show & tell at quild meetings. These are the people who always say 'oh, I was just kidding' when they see the person has hurt feelings They are bullies in adult form.
You have nice sewing tips and a great personality but I need less chat. Can you do some just sewing videos as well? I have ADD, can't follow all the switching to a new topic.

@Mary Bennett Good for you!!! And haha to your husband not being able to use it :) (did you see my comment above?)

That’s a great idea.
As far as an unkind comment, get over it. We all have our own opinions. Smile and go on with your presentation. You are the artist.
I really love those scrappy blocks you are making with the scraps
You can mark dark fabrics with a sliver of soap. It cheep and will also wash out.
I absolute love the fabric! So Sweet ... especially the little spiders.

So glad the magnet and perforated paper arrived safe. Enjoy

sounds like you have mastered that one!
I'm thinking when she answered 'oh', she might be a little jealous it's not for her.......
@Merle Wilcox I agree with @jean wini-maybe she's jealous OR jealous that you know how to do this hobby & she DOESN'T :)
Hahaha! We can have a sister-in-law contest (whose is worse) 😬😁😂 My dear SIL has many health challenges, and she does love to go on and on about all her many ailments and aches... 🙄🙄🙄
I get that all the time too!

I am trying to get a finish this week. Thanks for the encouragement to finish some of my Half and 3/4 done tops finished.
I like your crochet.

When I cross stitch on dark fabric, I put something white on my lap, then I can see the holes.
I am making the Pinwheel Party quilt. I will have 72 half square triangles to use in another project....3-1/2 inch triangles.
I used that perforated paper for making some very tiny ornaments for a miniature Christmas Tree...it was so 'cute' as you would say.
i bet they are darling!
Loved the pep talk!

Beautiful here in Arizona 🌵
Such a beautiful quilt and other cute blocks behind you! Thanks for all that you do.
Hello from chilly northwestern Ontario,Canada... enjoying the fireside chat
Instead of having to mark for the stitch and flip, couldn’t you use the folder corner clipper ruler or Doug lekos ruler?
I always wondered why my points didn’t match up! Thank you so much! I love your videos!
you are so welcome!
Hi from Snowy and cold Wyoming.
Did anyone else catch themselves nodding along with Pat?

Can you talk about how to begin sewing small pieces without the machine “eating” it in one of your daily chats?
