Its sad this man gets no credit but everyone claims joe is such a pioneer. Thank you for this interview. I needed this. Im from the bay area but dated a girl from brooklyn..man she had so many brooklyn stories. And I dont know by whom but she was photographed as well and showed me a published book of her and other family from when she was a kid. It was iconic...r.i.p. zoe anna king.

I discovered Jamel Shabazz's photography on The Independent Photographer. I searched and catalogued hundreds of his photos. I believe that Jamel's subjects can subscribe to Roland Barthes' words: "[...] photographic ceremonial: I lend myself to the social game, I pose, I know I'm posing, I want you to know it, but this additional message must not alter in the slightest [...] the precious essence of my person: only what I am, outside of any effigy." I said to myself: I absolutely must return to NY and try in every way to meet him. Then I buy a Canon lens and see a nice review on this channel. Finally, now, I see that this channel is taking care of Jamel Shabazz! What a beautiful coincidence! Warm greetings from Italy.

Hey Simone. I exhibited with him back in 2009. We'll do more stuff together. He doesn't love being on camera but we have a relationship so we made it happen. I miss italy. Peep some of my work for Nottinblu in northern italy at stevecarty.com in my work section.

Under 6,000 views is criminal. This is, arguably, the best interview that I have seen with a photographer who isn't insecure enough to hold back his wisdom for fear of someone stealing his spot. What he has done is exactly what I rued not doing in the 80's when I first got into photography, and that is to document everything, but hindsight is a beautiful thing. The more that you understand, that things never remain the same, is the more that you should understand, you should, document the moment you're in.

But I've doubted my work compared to these local legends. I think the take away for me is. Don't wait for the opportunity, create it. Wow, so much to think about.
