  • Power raking potholes and leveling a crushed stone driveway. It's ideal to fix crushed stone driveways while the the ground is dry. But, not always possible because most often customers call when it has been raining and potholes are full of water. And, most annoying! This driveway I power raked and leveled in the middle of summer. The customer was tired of driving across the potholes since spring.
Power raking is crucial to fully fixing potholes. A true repair requires the entire area of the pothole to be chewed up and leveled. If you just fill a pothole with loose stone or gravel it will reform quickly and come right back. Unfortunately this driveway has a long stretch that is lower than rest of surrounding yard. It holds water longer which results in more frequent potholes.
I do my best on every driveway to get it level and smooth again. But some driveways are impossible to get completely get rid of potholes. I have talked to this customer a few times of ways to fix it,but it would require building up driveway several inches even over a foot in some areas to be higher than rest of yard. They may pave down the road but for now they keep hiring me to come fix it! Which I am very grateful!

I repair gravel roads in northern Indiana for my local county. One tip I always give those trying to spread stone with their truck is, keep moving before you open your tailgate. I've seen a bunch of guys raise their bed, open gate, then they'll start moving. That's where the big humps come from when dumping. Spreading stone with a truck is probably my favorite thing to do working for the county. Another great video from ya John👍

I know there's an art to it! Very rarely do I deliver stone with my truck though. I typically have a guy deliver stone in a triaxle. But even most driveways I work on have low wires and trees for a triaxle to go under!
I appreciate the tip though for next time!

There is a company here in town that has 1 of those rakes behind his tractor. He gets out there in the hot dry weather and tries to fix his pot hole problem but it doesn’t work very well. I wish I could tell him he needs to do it after a rain

Recently found your channel from Florida Turf Pros recommendation. I like how your power rake had wings to help keep the gravel from spilling out into the grass.
