  • In the 1990s, Rosemary Verey was one of England's best-known gardeners. And, in particular, she was known for her book on the winter garden. Here she explains how a garden can still look amazing on cold days, and shares some of her family history and how Barnsley House gardens were created.
Barnsley House is now an exclusive hotel and usually open to residents only.

I absolutely loved her garden in Barnsley. She’s a garden designer’s icon. My garden is full off hellebores now, all different varieties.

This woman has a strange presence in my life, I have been friends with her grandson since our late 20's in the 1990s...he never mentioned her until he turned up at my Fulham flat with the weekend Times to show me her obituary in 2001...I then learn how connected he was - having also had a father who was Chaplain to the Queen for a time, a famous Aunt who was also a British newsreader...not to mention his mother was then dating an ex US astronaut! All quite true. This women was so well respected in life and was known as the 'English Country Garden Doyenne'...apparently known more in the States than in England itself. At her funeral another highly respectful, yet surreal, event occurred when prior to the service starting the doors opened and in came a security detail before Charles (the now King) entered and sat just behind the family on the pews...of course she designed the Ornamental Vegetable Garden at Highgrove! I lived on the stories of my friend's family whenever it occurred to me! Still do from time to time.
