I'd believe her parents could do that, but based on the interactions between her and her parents, I think she moved out the second she turned 18 so she wouldn't have to deal with them.
From what I've gathered so far (I'm re-watching the show and I'm also re-watching your reviews), it sounds like Pinkie Pie was Amy Keating Rogers' favorite character to write about. She clearly understands her character and her Pinkie episodes are hilarious and insightful.
This episode was just amazing. I was excited by the premise alone, and boy, did it deliver. This does Pinkie's character justice this season, and so far, is one of my favorite episodes. :D
About that final scene, I know they were referencing something but I don't know what. Discounting that, I think Pinkie was just joking when she said she didn't get Cheese's name, since she laughed first before saying 'oh, yeah', this implies she's just pretending, to make the reference.
is a reference to old western movies, dunno if a particular one. Something about characters saying theirs names a lot in the movie, to end just like this episode ended, more or less. But he is right, bad seen if you dont know the reference, weird if you do get it. Glad he did not take more points for that, i guess.
Itachi17509 Really? Thanks for that. But I don't think it was particularly bad even when I didn't get it, was surprised when MrEnter deducted a point for that. I just see that as Pinkie being (a real, properly portrayed) Pinkie.
Thinker come to think about it, one of my top 3 toughs when i watched that scene was "i'm pretty sure MrEnter wont like that" but yeah, even for a reference, its a weird one lol, just, is not over the top
Fun fact: The Spanish song pinkie sings during the goof off is a Mexican tradition song usually played when hitting the piñata at a party. Anyway great review! :)
5:18- Regarding the end joke, i didn't know what it was referencing first watching the episode, but i don't really care. At least we can all agree that this episode was undeniable freaking awesome! Weird Al vs. Pinkie Pie? That's a recipe for amazing, and i don't think any of us were disappointed with it.
This is the first (and still only) episode I watched specifically because Weird Al was in it. And I thought it was awesome too; it just put a huge smile on my face through it. And you know what? Thanks to your reviews, I'm seriously considering watching some more. My Little Pony isn't totally for me, but I do see it's a show I can appreciate (good and bad), so maybe it's worth giving it a shot.
This episode had to be one of my favorite episodes of the season. The live action gags with gummy and cheese sandwiches' rubber chicken had me rolling on the floor with laughter!
I'm so glad you loved this episode, holy shit. It is honestly my favourite episode in the entire series. I was actually just starting to fall out of interest with My Little Pony as a whole because i'd had numerous shitty, offputting encounters with bronies and they were disheartening me to the point of leaving the 'fandom'. But then I heard there was a Weird Al episode so i knew i had to check it out, and this episode made me so happy that at the end of it i started crying. (I was on new antidepressants so the happy drugs probably had a bit to do with that.) It completely revived my love of the show, and i'm very happy it exists.
Perhaps the keys are not from the items themselves, but from the power of what they accomplished. So far we've that in order to get the key, they need to have a realization and do something about it. Rarity realized that being manipulative isn't always the best way to get things done, Dash learned a lesson she's already learned, and Pinkie learned that the objective of her "job", and "herself" in some ways, is to have people enjoy what she does, not force it on them and make them like it. ...Or something like that.
First off, I'm so addicted to watching your reviews... The day I discovered your channel I pretty much breezed through every single MLP review (BTW, the a dog and pony show has been taken down) and I ended up with newfound appreciation for a few episodes that I didn't care for much before. About this episode, I think that the fact that Pinkie Pie moved to Ponyville when she was filly-aged raises more questions about her backstory and how she left her family in the rock farm. I mean, is this common in the MLP universe? What age are these characters supposed to be? When do they gain independence to move about and lead their own lives? I also had a peeve with Pinkie's key. Rarity and RD earned their keys after teaching/inspiring another character through their elements in the present. It seemed like a really nice evolution of their characters, from being tested on them in the series opener to now inspiring others. Pinkie, on the other hand, taught Cheese laughter in the past... Other than these minor gripes, I think this episode was hilarious and I've watched the part Cheese parodies Pinkie's "Smile, smile, smile" way too many times now.
I agree totally with you! But seriously, the reference at the end, it didn't need to get a point taken off. To me, it's just a silly joke at the end to leave the children smiling. This is a kid's show after all... We just love it too, us bronies. Amazing episode, amazing song, I'm disappointed that Pinkamena didn't come back, but we saw Pinkie's third sister from the chapter book! :D I'm nervous about Simple Ways too, btw. It sounds too much like that sleepover episode with Applejack and Rarity arguing. *shutters*
I think Rainbow Dash is the kind of person to move as soon as they turn 18: especially after Parental Glidance. She'd be very eager to have a house of her own away from her parents. So yeah, I think it's plausible and kind of clever that she moved on her birthday
You know, looking back at this episode and your review of "Pinkie Apple Pie", this episode raises some questions about Pinkie's backstory. It seems like Pinkie Pie started her party-throwing career at a rather young age, and based on just how isolated her old rock farm was, I presume the party where Pinkie and Cheese met wasn't held there, which makes me think about why Pinkie would leave her home as a young filly… Anyway, love this episode.
That thing at the end was obviously a joke. I highly doubt Pinkie actually forgot his name. She was just being Pinkie. Great review and great episode though!
I was actually worried you'd find Cheese Sandwich to be a self insert gary-stu, considering he's a character who shows out of nowhere, takes many attributes from who he's based off on IRL, exceeds one of the main characters, has little to no flaws, everyone likes him, and has some sort of past with a main character like most fan fics do (only difference was that this worked for the plot and Cheese Sandwich himself is a likable character) But back on topic, I personally felt the first half of this episode was a little weak, but the second half was amazingly hilarious and well done all together. Nice review.
Three problems: - #1 - Everyone’s attitude after Cheese’s first song. - how is it that no one noticed there’s something wrong with Pinkie? Twilight kind of did but decided to not ask further questions which was a bit odd after what she did in Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Dash - ok, just saying “No offense” to someone who’s drinking their own tears in front of you is not going to solve the problem. Applejack - “Don’t know what got into me”. Yeah… that’s the second time she used that excuse, after Pinkie Apple Pie. - #2 - Cheese’s “superior planning skills”. As far as I’m concerned the only adventage he had over Pinkie was the fact he had all those gadgets and attractions (and a hippo!) which would cost a fortune in real life. Where did he get all of that? Do ponies pay him for the parties? This show almost never talks about financial problems ( I think the only time was in SSCS 3000) so I don’t know what to make of this. And then there’s the “Pinkie’s parties are sweet and all”. There’s one problem with that. The Canterlot Wedding party, which felt very much like RD’s birthday in this episode. And that was all Pinkie’s doing! Of course the actual CW party looked nothing like what PP presented to the Fake Cadance earlier. Hmm… CW party does indeed feel like the odd one out of the bunch in comparison to The First One, Welcome to Ponyville and Gummy’s Birthday parties. But the same thing can be said about the giant rainbow piñata compared to PP’s circus act, bubbles and balloons, Gummy and the Party cannon. [Actually... what if Cheese actually charged ponyville for the party? Then the moral would be that expensive gadgets and gizmos is not what really matters on a party, but how much effort your friends put into it. I know, I know, I'm not a writer, it's probably a very sh*tty idea, but still. Just putting it out here)] - #3 - why did Cheese lie about his past? To impress everyone? I guess so. Why not just tell PP straight away you’re here to show here how much you’ve learned? Was he even going to tell her that? Also - if that was so important to him, how is it he didn’t notice Pinkie was absent from the party preparations? A tiny scene where he looks around and seems sad for some reason would’ve done the trick.
Yay for taking away the chance of this masterpiece getting a platinum because of simply a badly made reference! That was absolutely totally stupidly POINTLESS!
coming back to this episode, in season 7 she wants nothing to do with her parents cuz they're over enthusiastic of Rainbow Dash so it makes sense she would move on her 18th birthday like you said. Just thought that was pretty neat, yet probably unintentional.
"Seriously, who moves on their birthday?" Firebrand in his review of pinkie pride: Ha! I moved to Kenya, Africa on my birthday! Mr. enter your question has been answered.
...That last joke was a reference joke? I thought the joke was that you constantly heard Cheese Sandwiches name throughout the entire episode, then Pinkie utters that and... yeah. You really had to take away the platinum point just cause of one failed joke? XD Suuuuure. I see what ya did there. Also while I don't agree that it's kinda weird for an anniversary of a moving day to be on one's birthday, I do agree that the extra little tid bit was a little... unnecessary. It didn't serve or hurt the plot, and probably only fueled to give a little info on... backstory, which again it doesn't really provide any substance at all. hmmm... Great review as usual, personally didn't find any major disagreements with your critique this time, unsurprisingly.
I didn't see that joke there in the end that bad to have a point taken off, I mean, that was the joke, a cowboy or ranger of sorts striding off into the sunset and a fair maiden who never has gotten his name. Then again I guess you're still off about what they did to Pinkie in "Three's a Crowd" and that whole her forgetting his name despite it being constantly repeated throughout the episode reminded you of that. Either way, good review! :)
This episode was so close to getting a perfect score, but just barely missed it. I guess you could say it was... *Put sunglasses on* Close, but no cigar.
"Who moves on their birthday?" Well, for one ~I~ did this year, in January, in the middle of Australian Summer, due to moving house and finally getting out of rental accommodation, 150km (~95 mile) each way between where I was moving from to where I finally had a house of my own... 300km (~190 mile) round trips during the move. And there's also Commander Firebrand of FOBEquestria, who moved from the US to Kenya on HIS birthday, as what I would presume to be part of a deployment. And those are just two real-world examples I can think of, so it's not common but it DOES happen.
This is probably the only FIM review where I agree with pretty much every word you said! (that and "Putting your Hoof Down!". Ugh!) This was a fantastic episode and probably the best Pinkie Episode to date.
This show and gravity falls have great celebrity cameos because of the fact that 1. If it is just the celebrity they are only around for a few jokes like lary King was in HeadHunters of Gravity falls or 2. The show has them doing a completely original character like this episode with weird al and weird al in the Gravity falls episode Dungeons Dungeons and more Dungeons
I like to think that this episode is a tribute to Pinkie Pie. If Magical Mystery Cure is a retrospective on Twilight's journey and her character, then this episode does the same, but with Pinkie. Much like MMC, Pinkie Pride takes advantage of the fact that it is a celebration of Pinkie Pie and thus, makes clever references to showcase Pinkie's growing character. In some ways, it's actually better than MMC because of its simple story and the fact that nearly all of the details weren't left unchecked. IMO, this is the best Pinkie Pie episode in the show to date for its clever humor, clever message, and its clever use of Weird Al Yankovic. Amy Keating Rogers has finally created her magnum opus. Well done girl, well done.
I think we do finally learn why Rainbow Dash moved on her birthday by "Parental Glidance" based on her annoyance of her parents over praising her over everything so seems to me her moving was when she just got sick of them. It wasn't something that was handled that well within that episode but it is an explanation... I guess.
Well, I got married, moved, and started a new job in the span of three months... That's pretty close, I suppose... My only real gripe with the ep is the awkward way in which they handled everyone throwing Pinkie overboard for Cheese Sandwich. Perhaps they could have had Rainbow Dash offering Cheese a chance to HELP with the party, only to have Pinkie angrily reject the idea before she realizes that her pride is getting in the way of the real purpose of her parties, to make others happier.
Yeah, that's why I didn't like the episode; the whole thing about everyone running off and abandoning her felt a little too much like the way the townsfolk were acting in 'Putting Your Hoof Down' for me to be comfortable and enjoy the episode. Plus, Cheese Sandwich really felt like an antagonist rather than just a neutral character doing his job.
The whole episode is loosely based on western movies, and when there's a travelling hero of some sort in those movies, it usually ends with someone realizing they never once heard the mysterious hero's name.
+Spring Spry During the run of the show she's lived in Ponyville. She's never lived in Cloudsdale onscreen. You see, she lives in a cloud home by herself above Ponyville. But her mailbox is on the ground. So she lives in Ponyville just in a different way than those whose homes are on the ground. Apparently you can live in a cloud home without living in Cloudsdale
Yeah the name bit was supposed to be a reference to a Clint Eastwood movie "The man with no name" The episode itself does have a number of references to western movies but I agree that the reference is lost here. Perhaps if the episode was built around a mild parody of that one particular movie then that line would've worked. As it stands however it does not.
i thought he sounded a lot like weird al yankovic, i actually looked in the credits after watching it to be sure also, 4:44 if you were to count how many candles were on that cake (including how many were on the other side) that would make R.D. around 30 to 35 years old...
That ending gag was a reference joke? Wow I feel incredibly stupid now.... But then again I did think Pinkie was acting kinda stupid in that moment, but then I thought, did Cheese ever directly tell pinkie his name? And then I realized that yes, he did. So yeah basically the only part that was wrong with the episode. Also, who the fuck is that third filly in the picture of Pinkie's first ever party? Like that really stood out to me. Also, was I the only one who thought Cheese getting angry over Pinkie calling him "boneless" was an innuendo? I swear that was my first thought when I heard that line. I need to get my head out of the trash *headesk*
apparently the filly in the photo is supposed to be pinkies older sister from the pony books by GM berrow (barrow? i think?) prolly to set up a future episode where pinkies sisters do appear.
Fan-fics now have new material for Rainbow Dash. Why did she move on her birthday when in Games Ponies play she seemed to have a congenial relationship w/ her dad. Interesting premise, we have seen her have issues with a lot of rules and with Testing we see that she probably had issues in school paying attention not reaching her potential. Ooh this could make for an awesome father's/mother's day themed episode where Rainbow Dash learns to repair the rift w/ her parents.
He is a good actor, I only recognised him when he started to sing. And no, his look didn't gave me a clue because I didn't expected him to be here at all. Except the fact that all Pinkie's friends just abandoned her like they did with Spike in an older episode, this one was quite good, and really funny.
It's a reference to the old-timey western cliche of the girl looking off into the distance as the hero leaves and says, "I never did get his name" or something like that. It fits with Cheese's Clint Eastwood outfit he has on throughout the episode.
Now that Al Yankovic voices a My Little Pony pony, I am going to write new scripts where Ashley Tisdale voices a My Little Pony pony: Flower Flight, a background pony from the equal village! Starlight Glimmer is so busted for stealing her cutie mark! June 4, 2019, 7:16pm If you know Al Yankovic from Milo Murphy's Law, you might also remember Ashley Tisdale for voicing Candace Flynn from Phineas and Ferb and Sabrina Spellman from Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch.
How would you feel if Ashley Tisdale was in MLP? She already has another series with Tabitha St. Germain called Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch. June 4, 2019, 7:17pm
i honestly had to remind myself who was playing Cheese Sandwich (he's not that big of a deal here in Panama) and they made the character an entity on it's own without relaying too much on the fact it's a celebrity episode; i definetly feel that he needs to come back even if it was just a cameo, it'd be wort it
Yes, this episode was "fucking awesome", like you said. Its comedy and character development were top notch here. Amy Keating Rodgers, you've done it again!
4:58 LOL Sierra logic!!! Oh well, crazier solutions to puzzles have come from them. Such as making it rain to kill a dragon or saying "Ifnkvohgroghprm." Kudos to anybody who can recognize the two references!
Here I am watching the review of the first MLP episode I ever watched. And what do you know, it's the first where I think MrEnter doesn't sound pessimistic.
I know I'm posting this maybe a year and a half late, but that reference you took issue with at the end there was one I didn't have any issue with despite not knowing almost anything about Weird Al beyond him existing as a musician. I just took it in as "Pinkie made a reference to Westerns (which for that matter I don't know much about either) because Cheese Sandwich clearly had a bunch of Western-themed things about him." It was invisible- at least, as far as I was concerned, it was...
As for the 'Who moves on their birthday' thing, Rainbow Dash's parents could have surprised Rainbow with a house of her own.
That would make sense.
Considering the episode parental glidance that's actually very believable
I'd believe her parents could do that, but based on the interactions between her and her parents, I think she moved out the second she turned 18 so she wouldn't have to deal with them.
@@krystencabbage1032 that's also very plausible

Tied for my favourite episode of all time. I adore this episode so much.

Mr. Enter, you really need to re-watch Toy Story.

5:18- Regarding the end joke, i didn't know what it was referencing first watching the episode, but i don't really care. At least we can all agree that this episode was undeniable freaking awesome! To me, Pinkie Pride is The Mysterious Mare-do-Well done right
I will never not raise my hand when Mr. Enter asks "Who moves on their birthday?" cause I literally moved on my 18th Birthday
I think Rainbow Dash is the kind of person to move as soon as they turn 18: especially after Parental Glidance. She'd be very eager to have a house of her own away from her parents. So yeah, I think it's plausible and kind of clever that she moved on her birthday
After watching the season 7 episode with Rainbow and her parents I can see why she wanted to move out the day she legally could lol.
Rainbow Dash moving on her birthday makes a bit more sense, when you consider she lives in a mobile home.
(Rimshot)...was that a pun or a regular joke? :P
Dejay Page
Neither. I am just pointing out Rainbow Dash lives in a mobile home (a cloud) and moving is as simple as pushing it anywhere she wants.
You know, looking back at this episode and your review of "Pinkie Apple Pie", this episode raises some questions about Pinkie's backstory. It seems like Pinkie Pie started her party-throwing career at a rather young age, and based on just how isolated her old rock farm was, I presume the party where Pinkie and Cheese met wasn't held there, which makes me think about why Pinkie would leave her home as a young filly…

Judging by your description, how is Cheese in any way likable?
Three problems:
-
#1 - Everyone’s attitude after Cheese’s first song.
-
#2 - Cheese’s “superior planning skills”. As far as I’m concerned the only adventage he had over Pinkie was the fact he had all those gadgets and attractions (and a hippo!) which would cost a fortune in real life. ...That last joke was a reference joke?
+BendyPenguin64 He changed it to a perfect score in the overview.
"Who moves on their birthday?"
Well, for one ~I~ did this year, in January, in the middle of Australian Summer, due to moving house and finally getting out of rental accommodation, 150km (~95 mile) each way between where I was moving from to where I finally had a house of my own...
Knowing what we ended up finding out about Rainbow later in the show, she probably moved to get _away_ from her parents XD
This is probably the only FIM review where I agree with pretty much every word you said! (that and "Putting your Hoof Down!". Ugh!) This was a fantastic episode and probably the best Pinkie Episode to date.
Weird Al Yankovic makes anything 20% Cooler.
This is honestly my favorite episode on mlp.
maybe the keyholes are like the ones in KH, where they're opened by something...symbolic or something.
4:41 this sounds like a good fanfic idea. If I wasn't so busy procrastinating all my other fanfic ideas, I would write that.
*gasps* Next Admirable Animation: PPG? Next Animated Atrocity: More Spongebob??
*grabs popcorn*
"Who moves on their birthday."
Commander Firebrand.
me, twice
I think we do finally learn why Rainbow Dash moved on her birthday by "Parental Glidance" based on her annoyance of her parents over praising her over everything so seems to me her moving was when she just got sick of them. It wasn't something that was handled that well within that episode but it is an explanation... I guess.
Excellent use of the Tetris Plus theme. A great addition from a great game to a great review.
A shame this episode couldn't get the legendary platinum status but yeah that reference was pretty weird.
People move on their birthdays. Life happens regardless of personal details.
It's been 26 episodes, and nearly 2 years, since the last Amy Keating Rodgers episode. What a fantastic comeback! :D
Yeah. You're right with the last part. I don't know whats the reference.
The whole episode is loosely based on western movies, and when there's a travelling hero of some sort in those movies, it usually ends with someone realizing they never once heard the mysterious hero's name.
Awesome work as usual MrEnter.
Wait... Moved to Ponyville? She lived in Cloudsdale before in the show and later on. When did she move to Ponyville and leave and why?!
Got it.
Cheese Sandwich is a strange name for a character. Did Weird Al come up with his character name?
I love his satire songs. They are funny!
I've never listened to Weird Al, but this episode makes me want to...
joshschorcher moved to Kenya on his birthday.
Yeah the name bit was supposed to be a reference to a Clint Eastwood movie "The man with no name"
The episode itself does have a number of references to western movies but I agree that the reference is lost here. Perhaps if the episode was built around a mild parody of that one particular movie then that line would've worked. As it stands however it does not.
Man, Pinkie's faces had me dying XD
1:22 *cough* Toy Story *cough*.
i thought he sounded a lot like weird al yankovic, i actually looked in the credits after watching it to be sure
also, 4:44 if you were to count how many candles were on that cake (including how many were on the other side) that would make R.D. around 30 to 35 years old...
weegee buster Either 21 or 41.
Vanderworple twitter.com/mktoon/status/429651688354349057 ....eeyup.
As I'm no fan of pinkie centered episodes this was an amazing episode. It saved her character.
This episode has Weird Al's music genius and Pinkie Pie's Craziness, and IT IS GLORIOUS!!!!
"Make A Wish" is my favorite song from its episode.
It's also my favorite episode to date
Fan-fics now have new material for Rainbow Dash. Why did she move on her birthday when in Games Ponies play she seemed to have a congenial relationship w/ her dad. Interesting premise, we have seen her have issues with a lot of rules and with Testing we see that she probably had issues in school paying attention not reaching her potential. Ooh this could make for an awesome father's/mother's day themed episode where Rainbow Dash learns to repair the rift w/ her parents.
Writers, please make it happen.
I'm getting the, "an error occurred," message. How do I fix this?
I don't know what Pinkie referenced but I do know she did reference something and I still find it funny.
Cheese Sandwich singing the Smile lyrics always make me giggle
He is a good actor, I only recognised him when he started to sing. And no, his look didn't gave me a clue because I didn't expected him to be here at all. Except the fact that all Pinkie's friends just abandoned her like they did with Spike in an older episode, this one was quite good, and really funny.
4:28 Let the shipping begin. ;)
Also, I just recently realized this episode was not so subtly based on old western movies? For some reason, that took me a while to get.
So... Do you mean cheesy pie?
My family moved on my little sister's birthday.
what was Pinkie Pie refrence at the end, when he forgot Cheese's name
It's a reference to the old-timey western cliche of the girl looking off into the distance as the hero leaves and says, "I never did get his name" or something like that. It fits with Cheese's Clint Eastwood outfit he has on throughout the episode.
After this, Weird Al voiced Milo Murphy on Milo Murphy's Law
Now that Al Yankovic voices a My Little Pony pony, I am going to write new scripts where Ashley Tisdale voices a My Little Pony pony: Flower Flight, a background pony from the equal village! Starlight Glimmer is so busted for stealing her cutie mark! June 4, 2019, 7:16pm
If you know Al Yankovic from Milo Murphy's Law, you might also remember Ashley Tisdale for voicing Candace Flynn from Phineas and Ferb and Sabrina Spellman from Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch.
i never knew Weird Al was in MLP
this made me love the show again :-D
How would you feel if Ashley Tisdale was in MLP? She already has another series with Tabitha St. Germain called Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch. June 4, 2019, 7:17pm
i honestly had to remind myself who was playing Cheese Sandwich (he's not that big of a deal here in Panama) and they made the character an entity on it's own without relaying too much on the fact it's a celebrity episode; i definetly feel that he needs to come back even if it was just a cameo, it'd be wort it
Pinkie is my favorite pony to hear a song from. I just LOVE her voice.
When you said Weird Al is in this episode, I instantly had a nerdgasm.
This episode was almost perfect! I really thought it was going to be a Pinkie Pie version of the Hurricane Fluttershy episode.
I've moved on my birthday. Twice.
What is the end joke referencing? I really don't know.
Yes, this episode was "fucking awesome", like you said. Its comedy and character development were top notch here.
Amy Keating Rodgers, you've done it again!
I'd like to argue that, given her giggle at the end, Pinkie was only joking about forgetting his name.
This is Pinkies defining episode for Season 4,
I will accept nothing less than this,
Great review, and Best episode of Season 4 FTW!!!!!!
It pretty much top my last favorite episodes by Dave polskey.
This episode tops even Lesson Zero and maybe even Return of Harmony!!!!
4:58 LOL Sierra logic!!! Oh well, crazier solutions to puzzles have come from them. Such as making it rain to kill a dragon or saying "Ifnkvohgroghprm." Kudos to anybody who can recognize the two references!
You might think I'm crazy for saying this, but Pinkie Pride has now become my all-time favorite episode of MLP
Here I am watching the review of the first MLP episode I ever watched. And what do you know, it's the first where I think MrEnter doesn't sound pessimistic.
I usually don't watch MLP reviews but yours is so short, I know you'll cut the BS and you did. Good job :)
The real gummy and rubber chicken and the spanish song really surprised me. A good episode after a lot of regular ones.
