I wouldn't be so quick to trust the investigations on Neil. The investigations were conducted by National Geographic and Fox, networks that, at the time, had it in their best interest to find Neil innocent so they could air his new show, Cosmos, which had been delayed as a result of the allegations. There's a conflict of interest there that we should keep in mind.
I love that line, "I'm faning embers that still glow from childhood hoping to ignite them into flames so that they can remember how fun it was to be curious about the unknown" simply brilliant.
When i was in jr. high we went on a field trip to the planetarium, that was a long time ago, but it was probably the best field trip that i attended while in school. And it fueled my life long interest in all things science, and especially astronomy. We need more science ED in schools today.
I love it. Neil gives a 2 minute 40 second long answer to a question on role models having in mind in the first moment the complex seed of all he knew he needed to say. That’s how I know how smart he is.
Or he’s been asked this question dozens of times throughout his career and has narrowed down a simple and effective way of providing a fruitful answer.
This is the most beautiful explanation of role models I have ever heard. I am consistently moved by Neil's wisdom. Neil, In the last few decades, you have become one of my role models.

Tyson tells us it was "an attempt to distinguish we from they." When Bush's actual 9-11 speech was a call for tolerance and inclusion. It was delivered from a mosque. After Tyson was called out he eventually admitted error and apologized to Bush. But this was after he had been telling this bull shit story for eight years. A person who understands scientific reasoning doesn't just see a news article that says "COVID VACCINE DOESN'T WORK" and share it. They think about it. They try to put it on context. They consider the source. They look at publicly available data. They look at what sources they do trust are saying. You don't need to be a scientist to do this. But you do need to do this in order to be an informed citizen in a democracy. NDT is a evangelist of scientific reasoning. Happy New Year!

Disgraceful questioning from the interviewer. The BBC can and must do better. NDT nonetheless inspirational, and just immediately changed my view on Bezos et al.’s rich club of space exploration. What a thoughtful insight to see this as a parallel step of the birth of the aviation industry. I hope he’s right.

The presumably affected women should also have shared with the police all the contacts that corroborate their claims, and not just leave those details with the "internal investigation" of for-profit companies. Otherwise, there won't be a satisfactory closure. As to your daughter, advise her to denounce to the police any sexual crime she suffers as soon as possible, and to look for help in associations and her family - she shouldn't wait for too much time to pass.

He's just answering questions. Is the guy supposed to baby neil and talk about sports or something? It gives neil the chance to give clarity on these topics. It's not a bad thing at all. If you hated neil more than anything you might as well discuss things that go nowhere and don't give him a chance to explain anything or awaken anyone.

Any time someone mentions how much money we're "wasting" on NASA, I point out that NASA's entire, CUMULATIVE budget since it's inception in the 50s through 2020 doesn't add up to the 2020 military budget for ONE SINGLE year.
and I also like to add that the US spends around twice NASA's budget on pet food each year and 4x on soft drinks. Of course that is cumulative disposable income rather than a slice of annual tax take but the basic argument is about a societies resource allocation to 'solve problems here on Earth' blah, blah, blah.

The interviewer left me with a sour feeling if I'm being honest. I don't disagree with asking about the allegations but he was clearly not briefed on that. NDT I understand the argument of wanting to leave it in the past because there was an investigation which lead to nothing, and I understand not wanting to speak of it in an apologetic manner because unfortunately, that does indicate guilt to a lot of people- especially those whom are only attempting to trap you. At the same time I've sort of wanted NDT to bring it up and talk about it on some level but that's really not up to anyone but him- if the investigation proved differently then it would be another story. NDT is a National treasure and a dedicated and passionate educator who challenges us to think critically and many of us are grateful for you.

Is this really the best that BBC can master? When a “serious” interviewer asks about space exploration that “… a huge amount of resources wasted… Is any of these really useful?”, it feels we’re listening to something from 60’s.
I disagree. This is a sentiment that many people, and unfortunately many politicians, share. So by asking this question the interviewer is also giving Neil the opportunity to adress the issue.

The show is called HARDtalk. I think the whole point of the show is to ask sensitive and hard-hitting questions. This is not meant to be a lets learn about fun things about space interview, but what is Neil Degrasse Tysons views on these subjects and the show chose negative leaning subjects.
Tyson left the impression that the so called investigations exonerated him. Which isn't the case. The investigations were carried out by entities that had already invested a lot of money in Tyson's and Druyan's TV show Cosmos. So they had an incentive to look the other way. And the results of the investigations were not released. Ashley Watson says she gave investigators contact information of witnesses that could back up some of her claims. These witnesses were not contacted. I believe Ashley Watson and I believe the investigations were a sham.

I don't understand why reporters don't let people finish their answers. They can take a 3 hour interview and clip it down to 20 minutes. There were times Dr. Tyson was in a middle of a story - and the interviewer changes the momentum. Come on Mr. Reporter - be patient and listen.

My son and I had the privilege of meeting Neil deGrasse Tyson in a hall way at the Hayden Planetarium several years ago. He was on his way to an appointment. Despite his hurry, he graciously took a brief moment to stop and accept our expressions of admiration and gratitude. He is a great scientist and educator. To this day my Son and I remark on the brief meeting and how we need more. Many more men and women of his caliber speaking out. This especially in the light of the proliferation of ignorance so prevalent in this country of late.
You know, these educators on social media, television media, etc are the people who gave me the ability to see science as science, whole and complete. Thank you for that.

Being a good scientist also takes some self discipline. Neil is no scientist. He hasn't done research since his dissertation in the 90s. And, judging by all the stuff he gets wrong, hasn't opened a textbook either.
Curiosity is masculinity, insecurity is femininity and its excesse is what makes intellectuals, be they bureaucrats or bible thumpers or fact thumpers who vilify curiosity as liability which they must evade and/or subjugate. Just one example here, in August, he tweeted that unvaccinated Republicans are dying at five times the rate of Democrats every ten day while posting a picture of a book with the title "How to die like a medieval peasant in spite of modern medicine". He's trying to take a shot at republicans but what he's conveniently leaving out is that there are far more Republicans in the 65+ age group, which are vastly more vulnerable to Covid, statistically speaking. And these statistics have been around since the beginning of the pandemic. Tyson is misleading by omission. He actually does that a lot. Pay attention to his twitter. He's deleted several tweets already when people call him out hard enough, including the tweet I'm mentioning. He's just a political hack. If he was truly practicing what he preaches, he would have pointed out the statistical differences as well. It's as simple as that.
I wish Neil deGrasse Tyson would be more selective in who he is interviewed by. This interviewer is just a British version of a Fox news host (take your pick) The interviewers attempts at gotcha questions are just as vulgar as anything Fox type programs try.
The BBC, despite all it’s faults, is by no means anything like ‘Fox News’. The BBC has an opinion and to a certain extent, it can be bias at times too. Fox News however is just plain BS . All in all, I don’t think this was such a bad interview. Hardtalk on the BBC is a program format devoted to asking probing and difficult questions to a range of guests on a range of various subjects. You don’t go on Hardtalk expecting an easy interview.

Seems to me NDT made himself look guilty with his response to the #MeToo questions . The interviewer was clearly asking if NDT had had to examine his past behavior after the #MeToo movement began (AS MOST STRAIGHT MEN HAD TO) but instead of saying, "Of course! Didn't we all?" he became very defensive. That was very telling.

For what happened to science I'd add that I personally still find frustration in Reagan and his decision to liberate the press from accountability for telling verified facts. This opened a slippery path that only spiraled downward. He dealt these questions with fantastic tact and courtesy, all while remaining honest and direct, include the insinuation of improper/inappropriate behavior/conduct.

What is with this interviewer? Like learn the very basics of interviewing people. Let them finish their answers and guide the conversation through them. As a guy with a similar backround to Neil I totally appreciate how he puts an emphasis on individuality over group think! I didn't care what race the people who inspired me were. I only cared about how I could achieve that goal. I guess it helps when you have a father whose character defies the limitations of the masses. It's also refreshing to be reminded why we need space explorers. They will pave the way for the future of space civilization.

I wouldn't be so quick to trust the investigations on Neil. The investigations were conducted by National Geographic and Fox, networks that, at the time, had it in their best interest to find Neil innocent so they could air his new show, Cosmos, which had been delayed as a result of the allegations. There's a conflict of interest there that we should keep in mind.

Tyson tells us it was "an attempt to distinguish we from they." When Bush's actual 9-11 speech was a call for tolerance and inclusion. It was delivered from a mosque. After Tyson was called out he eventually admitted error and apologized to Bush. But this was after he had been telling this bull shit story for eight years.

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. A person who understands scientific reasoning doesn't just see a news article that says "COVID VACCINE DOESN'T WORK" and share it. They think about it. They try to put it on context. They consider the source. They look at publicly available data. They look at what sources they do trust are saying. You don't need to be a scientist to do this. But you do need to do this in order to be an informed citizen in a democracy. NDT is a evangelist of scientific reasoning.

The presumably affected women should also have shared with the police all the contacts that corroborate their claims, and not just leave those details with the "internal investigation" of for-profit companies. Otherwise, there won't be a satisfactory closure.

He's just answering questions. Is the guy supposed to baby neil and talk about sports or something? It gives neil the chance to give clarity on these topics. It's not a bad thing at all. If you hated neil more than anything you might as well discuss things that go nowhere and don't give him a chance to explain anything or awaken anyone.

Any time someone mentions how much money we're "wasting" on NASA, I point out that NASA's entire, CUMULATIVE budget since it's inception in the 50s through 2020 doesn't add up to the 2020 military budget for ONE SINGLE year.
and I also like to add that the US spends around twice NASA's budget on pet food each year and 4x on soft drinks. Of course that is cumulative disposable income rather than a slice of annual tax take but the basic argument is about a societies resource allocation to 'solve problems here on Earth' blah, blah, blah.

The interviewer left me with a sour feeling if I'm being honest. I don't disagree with asking about the allegations but he was clearly not briefed on that. NDT I understand the argument of wanting to leave it in the past because there was an investigation which lead to nothing, and I understand not wanting to speak of it in an apologetic manner because unfortunately, that does indicate guilt to a lot of people- especially those whom are only attempting to trap you. At the same time I've sort of wanted NDT to bring it up and talk about it on some level but that's really not up to anyone but him- if the investigation proved differently then it would be another story. NDT is a National treasure and a dedicated and passionate educator who challenges us to think critically and many of us are grateful for you.

Is this really the best that BBC can master? When a “serious” interviewer asks about space exploration that “… a huge amount of resources wasted… Is any of these really useful?”, it feels we’re listening to something from 60’s.
I disagree. This is a sentiment that many people, and unfortunately many politicians, share. So by asking this question the interviewer is also giving Neil the opportunity to adress the issue.

The show is called HARDtalk. I think the whole point of the show is to ask sensitive and hard-hitting questions. This is not meant to be a lets learn about fun things about space interview, but what is Neil Degrasse Tysons views on these subjects and the show chose negative leaning subjects.
The interviewer has balls, I like it. If you don't want hard hitting questions, then don't become a public figure. But Tyson handled it well.

The investigations were carried out by entities that had already invested a lot of money in Tyson's and Druyan's TV show Cosmos. So they had an incentive to look the other way. And the results of the investigations were not released.
Ashley Watson says she gave investigators contact information of witnesses that could back up some of her claims. These witnesses were not contacted. I believe Ashley Watson and I believe the investigations were a sham.

I don't understand why reporters don't let people finish their answers. They can take a 3 hour interview and clip it down to 20 minutes. There were times Dr. Tyson was in a middle of a story - and the interviewer changes the momentum. Come on Mr. Reporter - be patient and listen.
Answer: they have an agenda or are poor interviewers who like to bully.

My son and I had the privilege of meeting Neil deGrasse Tyson in a hall way at the Hayden Planetarium several years ago. He was on his way to an appointment. Despite his hurry, he graciously took a brief moment to stop and accept our expressions of admiration and gratitude. He is a great scientist and educator. To this day my Son and I remark on the brief meeting and how we need more. Many more men and women of his caliber speaking out. This especially in the light of the proliferation of ignorance so prevalent in this country of late.
If there was no NDT, i would have been a devoted Christian today without a clue about science and the cosmos!!! Thats the truth!!!

Damn that was Deep. I never thought about it like that. He is right, we as a society lose curiosity so easy or stop asking questions and fall into conformity. I am going to teach my child to constantly question everything around them.
Being a good scientist also takes some self discipline.
Neil is no scientist. He hasn't done research since his dissertation in the 90s. And, judging by all the stuff he gets wrong, hasn't opened a textbook either.
That's good I try to do same with my nephew. I do think though zoomer generation is loosing sense of wonderment loosing being marveled in general.

Stephen Sackur does not know how to "interview." This is just a questionnaire (a bunch of random questions from Stephen Sackur with some great answers from Neil). Inter in the word interview means "between." An interview is a 2-way avenue of mental discourse between two persons. BBC should hire me for this type of "interview." :)

Just one example here, in August, he tweeted that unvaccinated Republicans are dying at five times the rate of Democrats every ten day while posting a picture of a book with the title "How to die like a medieval peasant in spite of modern medicine". He's trying to take a shot at republicans but what he's conveniently leaving out is that there are far more Republicans in the 65+ age group, which are vastly more vulnerable to Covid, statistically speaking. And these statistics have been around since the beginning of the pandemic. Tyson is misleading by omission. He actually does that a lot. Pay attention to his twitter. He's deleted several tweets already when people call him out hard enough, including the tweet I'm mentioning. He's just a political hack. If he was truly practicing what he preaches, he would have pointed out the statistical differences as well. It's as simple as that.
It's always so refreshing to listen to his views. I loved the term he used "Tribalistic way of thinking"

I completely disagree, I find the interview quite interesting and Neil deGrasse’s answers excellent, I really enjoyed that interview.
The BBC, despite all it’s faults, is by no means anything like ‘Fox News’.
The BBC has an opinion and to a certain extent, it can be bias at times too.
Fox News however is just plain BS .
All in all, I don’t think this was such a bad interview. Hardtalk on the BBC is a program format devoted to asking probing and difficult questions to a range of guests on a range of various subjects. You don’t go on Hardtalk expecting an easy interview.

Seems to me NDT made himself look guilty with his response to the #MeToo questions . The interviewer was clearly asking if NDT had had to examine his past behavior after the #MeToo movement began (AS MOST STRAIGHT MEN HAD TO) but instead of saying, "Of course! Didn't we all?" he became very defensive. That was very telling.

For what happened to science I'd add that I personally still find frustration in Reagan and his decision to liberate the press from accountability for telling verified facts. This opened a slippery path that only spiraled downward.
He dealt these questions with fantastic tact and courtesy, all while remaining honest and direct, include the insinuation of improper/inappropriate behavior/conduct.
The way NDT handled the questioning was perfect.

What is with this interviewer? Like learn the very basics of interviewing people. Let them finish their answers and guide the conversation through them. Instead of trying to force the interview down the linear path that you expect/want the interview to go down.

As a guy with a similar backround to Neil I totally appreciate how he puts an emphasis on individuality over group think! I didn't care what race the people who inspired me were. I only cared about how I could achieve that goal. I guess it helps when you have a father whose character defies the limitations of the masses. It's also refreshing to be reminded why we need space explorers. They will pave the way for the future of space civilization.
