One day we will get to a point where Joseph opens the discussion with "now you may not remember this format, but that's because it was only played for 16 minutes at SJC Albuquerque when Jeff Jones forgot Pot of Greed was banned"
Pendulum Zexal FTK, Gouki Knightmares, Danger Dark World/ABC FTK, Slash Draw FTK, Rhongo Bongo, how the community survived that year is beyond me. At least we did get cool stuff like World Chalice tops, and Mekk-Knight Invoked.
I love how in these intros it goes from the modern day recording the specifics of the episode to Cimo saying what the series is about that he recorded like 2 years ago now with his old mic. It's like "alright he recorded the new line, get the comically oversized pringles can and put him in it"
@@gkoexIt really wasn't. Maybe in some regional, when Magician Souls was new, but Shadoll and Dragon Link were almost as good at later regionals and YCS was won by Salamangreat. Spyral was the best deck and arguably the only tier 1 deck, but very far from tier 0.
Im still shocked at how many horrific formats early Link era had. Theres like... 5 or 6 FTKs, several May-as-well-be-FTKs (Rhongo Bongo and Gumblar looping) and then just several awful Tier 0 formats. Like, unironically TOSS was the first good Link format and that was multiple years in. Its astonishing how Yugioh survived that.
TOSS wasn't a good format. That's why there's so few people playing it comparing to goat and Edison. It was just seen as a very good format because it followed a lot of VERY, VERY bad formats as you mentioned.
@@luis-ie3de I very much disagree. The reason you have less players is because its fairly recent compared to those and several of those decks are still playable today, so there's much less reason.
I think this format highlights exactly why so many people left during MR4 (at all my LGS' anyways) and didn't come back until MR5. The link pool and mechanic in general was so shallow at this point that 90% of decks were unplayable. Then out of those few that WERE playable even fewer of those could keep up with a deck like SPYral. Even Shaddoll was nigh unplayable at this point in time even though Shaddoll TO THIS DAY has some amount of relevance as a rogue deck (although I will admit in the past couple years it's been falling off more and more). The game was thrust into this version where the only way to win was to try to do the most degenerate boardstates possible. Right after having multiple formats that were highly skill intensive in MR3. It wasn't enough to just have a resource loop and some good bosses. You needed a resource loop, good bosses, a way to swarm at least 2 more monsters out without inhibiting your end board, and some form of alternate wincon/assist to your wincon as part of your strategy (hence why so many people turned to "welp time to handloop 3 with omega" ) and almost no decks in the game at this point were capable of such things without neutering their endboards.
We talk about this period of time as being this huge broken mess but its astonishing that end boards are still a link that doesn't do anything, a rank 4 and that took your entire hand. Spyral sleeper is obviously a great card but it's essentially the only relevant part of the boards this deck puts up. Compare this to just a couple years later with danger thundra putting up 2 floodgates and 3 negates while hand looping for 2 and the development of the modern endboard is wild
the only good shell ive played shiranui in where more than solitaire is usable is with vendreads because banishing them from grave for the ritual is just makes you go extra
I'm talking about having spectralsword in main deck in order to go into 6 8 and 10 synchro. You can also use spectralsword grave effect to bypass restrictions on zombie synchros
