Hey Michael, I absolutely enjoyed watching this. I've also been listening to Led Zeppelin continuously for the last few months. Led Zeppelin is my top band and ranking their albums is always difficult. I like the way you called them all masterpieces, I agree. It's easier for me to rank them in groups that are equal. An example would be ranking 1,2, and 4 as a three way tie. Ranking my favorite bands albums is never in stone for me. Thanks for doing this video, excellent job!!!
I have heard that it was a gateway album for many! That and the fact that Robert and John Paul Jones really stepped up to the plate on ITTOD David! Good call brother! ❤👌😉
Hey Michael. I'd put Presence at the top for my favorite Led Zeppelin album as, to me, it changed the way I listened to Zep. They, of course, put out all the bluesy stuff with their first 2 albums and had the ears readjusting themselves to hear III as Page, Bonham, Jones, and Plant went in more of a folk, almost acoustic direction. Their 4th album, despite my putting another album in the top spot for me did indeed have their best stuff on it. "Stairway To Heaven?" Are you kidding me? How ISN'T 4 their best? I'm a big fan of 'When The Levee Breaks" and "Black Dog" so, yeah-it deserves the top but, for me, I ranked Presence as my favorite and my reasoning for this is simple: "Achilles Last Stand". That song gave Led Zeppelin an intro to the heavy metal sound you now hear with Iron Maiden.
9: Coda 8: Led Zeppelin II 7: Presence 6: In Through the Out Door 5: Led Zeppelin I 4: Led Zeppelin IV 3: Led Zeppelin III 2: Houses of the Holy 1: Physical Graffiti
It is a true tribute to Led Zeppelin that their albums are so different with many people disagreeing with your top five. Like the Beatles catalog, it's hard to choose the best because practically all Zep's albums are great!
I kinda disagree. It IS very hard to distinguish which are the very best among the top approx. half dozen of Zep, Pink Floyd or The Beatles, but arriving at which six to include is somewhat easier. Few would disagree with The Wall, Animals, WYWH, DSOTHM, Meddle, or Abbey Road, Let It Be, White Album, Magical Mystery Tour, St Peppers, Revolver, Rubber Soul. Same for Led Zeppelin: their first 6 are their strongest. 6 albums without 1 weak song. The same cannot be said about albums like Coda and Presence. And unfortunately, I would have to add Physical Graffiti as well. Who can seriously argue that Night Flight, Sick Again, Boogie with Stu, or Black Country Woman are not very good.
@@donneumann6546 No. Mine is an objective observation. Most, but of course not all, would agree that some of their worst songs are on the 2nd side of Physical Graffiti and Presence, along wjth the CODA leftovers. In FACT, the very songs I reference on PG are leftovers themselves. There's a reason why they were leftovers - the band themselves didn't think much of them. They only got added into Physical Graffiti because what they wanted to released was longer than a single LP could hold, and so that added in filler. That is what objectivity is all about - FACTS. So in fact, it is YOU who are applying subjectivity via opinion, not me. You're allowed to like whatever you want, just don't pass it as objectivity.
Good follow-up to your previous Zep review. Ranking LZ albums and songs ( which I did on my last 2 live podcasts) is always shifting due to the greatness of their music . This is my favorite band dating back to 1969. Michael, thanks so much for the shout-out.

Hey Michael! Best wishes, my friend. The fact that Zeppelin has so many albums that can be fighting for top of the list (and a strong argument can be made for many of them) is a tribute to their continued excellence throughout their entire career. I've struggled for decades to find my ideal order, and that order constantly changes. Be well. Ernie
Thanx Ernie. Best wishes to you as well! To me true art breathes, and almost has a life of its own. Great art continues to have something to say to new generations, or even to older fans, who have the ears to hear brother!😉🤔🎧❤
Yes, so many wonderful songs on "Houses of the Holy" but I just can't place it that high because I never got on board with two of the tracks on it, "The Crunge" and "Dancing Days". They just kill the vibe for me.
Michael, i'll also say that "In Through The Out Door" is an exceptional album. Here JPJ was given free rein to take over - & his brilliance is heard all over this!! Jimmy Page was battling a heroin addiction & John Bonham was battling an alcohol addiction. So their participation was minimal.
1. Led Zeppelin IV 2. Physical Graffiti 3. Led Zeppelin II 4. Led Zeppelin 5. Houses Of The Holy 6. Led Zeppelin III 7. Presence 8. In Through The Outdoor 9. Coda
Great episode. Thanks, Larry. I absolutely love In Through the Outdoor. It really has some solid tunes on it and Jimmy really plays some solid solos. Cheers ✌️
Nice list. I've always liked Houses the best. The Rain Song and No Quarter reign supreme here and No Quarter is my favorite Zep song, ever. Next is Presence, then III and IV, which can go either way. I and II are next, followed closely by Physical, depending on my mood. I put CODA over ITTOD, even though it isn't a 'proper' Zep album. We're Gonna Groove smokes and they used to open their shows with it, back in the early days. I have never been an Out Door fan, really. A couple of nice tunes, but the rest is just meh, to me. Either way, a great list and, as usual, an excellent video.
Because of the longer double album format this gave Zeppelin room to stretch there sound and more experimentation. I consider Houses of the Holy as a pure Zeppelin album in the sense that it did not have any blues influence, they really found their own sound on that album.
That's the thing about this legendary band the material is so exceptional and depending on one's mood the ranking, at least for me, is fluid. From Zeppelin 2 to Presence each one has been my top album at one time or another. I think probably Physical Graffiti has been at the top the longest. As for Presence i was working in a record shop at the time of release and the album was played constantly during the next 7 days. As such i grew pretty tired of it for a while but 47/48 years later it brings back great memories of working part time in a record store
I was that way with Pink Floyd because my dad played it while I was growing up daily.. So much so that when my grad school friends gave me a mix tape I didn't recognize "Comfortably Numb." That's when I got back into them. 🤣
Another good video, Michael. I'll do mine like this - in 3 tiers. Top Tier: Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin IV (let's call it), Houses of the Holy Middle Tier (still better than almost all other bands): Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin III, Physical Graffiti, Presence Bottom Tier (I don't listen to these albums): In Through the Out Door, Coda

I didn't know how great Houses of the Holy was until I started watching your channel. It wasn't as accessible to me as some of the other albums when I was a kid and I couldn't get into it. But a few years ago I gave it a new listen and it was so fresh and fun. Had my parents seen the cover they would have destroyed all my Zeppelin records so I made sure I kept it hidden...
PG may be the best, but it has a built in advantage because it’s a double album. My favorite is LZII, but I think a case can be made that Houses of the Holy really is their apex.
Phys Graf is so diverse: I don't even consider it rock. It's world music. And it so varied that that alone takes my pick. I said 1V but no. Songs alone dont alone make it. The overall feel/keeps intriguing and redefining just what they offered which is very valuable to my justification.
As I’ve said several times here in the comments Adam, True art breathes and stays valid as decades and centuries pass brother! So yeah, I concur! ❤👌🏆🤔🎧
Presence is kind of like Led Zeppelin's Let It Be. A great album made in 3 or so weeks under strained circumstances - also the next to last album each band would record.

I'm with you on "Houses." It casts an atmospheric spell and hangs together more effectively than any of their other albums. Still, I think my favorite LP side in the Zeppelin catalog is Side 2 of IV, from "Misty Mountain Hop" to "When the Levee Breaks."
It is my understanding that the two children on Houses of the Holy are Robert Plant’s first two children Carmen and Karac. I have seen video of his children playing in the water and climbing out on the rocks and grass naked. They were babies. Robert believed in the natural environment being sacred.
A bit off topic ,but my favorite bands in order. Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles and The Doors. Why in the world is everyones favorites English?. (aside from the last two) I have a theory. I've been in some great sounding bands as The drummer but we never got noticed (played some shows) where in America, due to the music market being over saturated because of our nations sheer size and population. When compared to England's population and size, it would be much easier to be noticed then in America. I'm sure there are a whole ton of bands in America that sound damn near as good and as original as any of my first three picks, but will kinda stay in limbo just because they won't get noticed. Anyways thanks for the great content
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine --As mentioned Zeppelin never put out a bad album which practically no other rock band can say. Every record from them ranged from very good to a masterpiece. For me PG is their best and is my "go to" record with the most musical range, it had everything. '72-75 was their peak period..
I agree led zeppelin doesnt have any bad albums at all. My personal ranking: 9. CODA 8. Presence 7. Led Zeppelin I 6. In Through the Out Door 5. Led Zeppelin 2 4. Led Zeppelin 4 3. Led Zeppelin 3 2. Physical Graffiti 1. Houses of the Holy I usually rank albums by how much i enjoy listening to them all the way through.
Okay - i just paused the vid before you started your ranking - and i wrote mine down. I wanna see how it compares to what you think. In reverse order... 9. Coda 8. Presence 7. In Through the Out Door 6. Houses of the Holy 5. Lep Zeppelin III 4. Lep Zeppelin I 3. Physical Graffiti 2. Lep Zeppelin II 1. Lep Zeppelin IV
Houses of the Holy lacks in production always felt the mix is a somewhat muddy the songs come to life on the song remains the same. Physical Graffiti is my no 1 and is a better album IMO. Great video as always mate.
Funny thing about Zeppelin is that my rankings always change. I'm pushing 60 and not too long ago Graffiti made it to my #1. For years it was III and In Through the Out Door held #1 for long time.
Music is so subjective. The two albums I love all the way through are LZ I and LZ II. For the rest, I love songs but not albums. I am that way with a lot of music; Rush, Sabbath, and Stones. There's lots of great music that does nothing for me. I think the main thing holding me up with a piece like Kashmir, is lyrics are important to me. With Kashmir, I have no idea what's being sung, so it's just a long drone. Oh.... with LZ, some of my misheard lyrics are quite amusing. "I have farts that whistle, and I have farts that sing." - You Shook Me
After Physical Graffiti I was so disappointed with Presence. It felt more like a Jimmy Page solo project. Poor Robert, recovering from an leg injury steaming from a car accident, sill confined to a wheelchaired, they rolled him into the studio for another album that could have waited until Robert had made a full recovery. Also it was still recent that Physical Graffiti was released. While he did deliver strong vocals, I felt that Plants contribution is not as strong as on previous albums likely due from still recovering from his leg injury. While the playing and musicianship is excellent, I felt that the material was a bit subpar, not up to their usual standards. For these reasons I rank Presence last of all their albums up to that time. I mean it is still a good decent album to listen to but I was expecting more from them. In Though The Out Door while not the grandiose ending as Abbey Road or Bridge Over Trouble Water, it was an album that appeal to me more than Presence.
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLineI was not trying put down that you like Pressence and rank it so high. If you enjoy it that much then great. I was just expressing my thoughts on the album. Good day.:)
Hey Mike, aliens have landed and they say to me, we've been hearing about this Led zeppelin all the way here, who is this Led zeppelin? What album do you hand them and say Here, this is Led Zeppelin!!?
Presence is to clean It can pass as a plant solo album And my age ,I grew Up with plant so I prefer plant over zeppelin. I was born when 2 came out . Nothing beats Moby dick ,whole lotta. Presence is too sanitized
Again, most every Zeppelin album contains songs stolen from some other musician. Therefore, the most famous cover band next to Sha Na Na have absolutely no great albums. Give me Deep Purple or Black Sabbath, who actually wrote all their own material.
What are you talking about? Every band played other artists music back then. Stones Beatles Kinks and so many more played covers of other artists. The first three Deep Purple albums have many cover songs, so what are you talking about?
@@OutOnTheTiles Yes, but unlike Ded Zeppelin, when bands covered songs, they gave the songwriter or artist credit. Deep Purple paid Neil Diamond for covering his song, "Kentucky Woman." Deep Purple paid Joe South royalties for also coving his song, "Hush." Ded Zeppelin claimed they wrote all the songs, which is outright stealing. They did it to both white and black acts. Simply research the facts. It is an easy google.
Michael you continue to rank Presence and Physical Graffiti too high. Why? Because great albums, yet alone masterpieces, are not only about what's great on the LP, but what isn't. Both of those albums have some of their weakest songs and so as a whole that weighs them down. Other than CODA, these are the only 2 albums I find myself skipping forward past a track here and there. The only 3 albums of Led Zeppelin that I would even consider skipping songs are Coda, Presence and Physical Graffiti. So, ranking from worst to best: CODA Presence Physical Graffiti In Through the Out Door I Houses of the Holy III II IV Zoso I think fans can disagree on what their best songs are, but most can agree on what their worst songs are. Sustaining quality from first to last song must be an important criteria of what makes a masterpiece or great album. So Michael, 3 times a charm?
And a noble list yours is DJ! By the sound pf some of the other comments already here, I’d say you’ve got several allies in the comments so far! The collective consciousness of the Tribe has the final say, not me! ❤❤❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine LOL you're deflecting from my main point which is that a few, even one, weak song contaminate an album from getting a masterpiece ranking. There's a reason why Zoso, or Abbey Road, or DSOTHM are masterpieces! Presence and Physical Graffiti just don't make that highest shelf. Would love to hear your thoughts?

Thanks! Greatest music channel on yt. Michael is the perfect mix of music nerd and cynic
Thanx so much for your kind words, and financial support BrendanThe Kid!
Your gift is truly appreciated brother! ☺️👌👍❤🏆🏆🏆
Yeah tours in England were grueling, but American is hell BlackJack! ❤❤❤
It's the water over there.
All my favorite guitar players come from that side of the pond.
I think the original Coda is their ninth best album. The deluxe Coda though is their eighth best album, one ahead of Presence. IMO.
1. Physical Graffiti
2. IV
3. HOTH
4. II
5. Presence
6. ITTOD
7. I
8. III
9. Coda
Our very top albums aren’t too far off Robert! ❤❤❤
The first is First for me. All that followed came from Number One.
Btw, i just subscribed again, for probably the 5th time. RUclips hijinx bums me out. Grrr.
I agree with your ranking
I agree led zeppelin doesnt have any bad albums at all.
My personal ranking:
9. CODA
8. Presence
7. Led Zeppelin I
6. In Through the Out Door
5. Led Zeppelin 2
4. Led Zeppelin 4
3. Led Zeppelin 3
2. Physical Graffiti
1. Houses of the Holy
I usually rank albums by how much i enjoy listening to them all the way through.
Yeah me too WyoCaster! And like you said with no bad albums from LZ. I could live with your list as well! Damn, what a band! ❤❤❤❤
Okay - i just paused the vid before you started your ranking - and i wrote mine down. I wanna see how it compares to what you think. In reverse order...
9. Coda
8. Presence
7. In Through the Out Door
6. Houses of the Holy
5. Lep Zeppelin III
4. Lep Zeppelin I
3. Physical Graffiti
2. Lep Zeppelin II
1. Lep Zeppelin IV
There’s no list that I couldn’t live with SaintVitus! 😉👌❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Totally agree - these 9 albums will always be in rotation for me.
I always liked III I got it when it first came out.
"I have farts that whistle, and I have farts that sing." - You Shook Me
And LZ1 & LZ2 are the top contenders for a whole lotta people Rick, so I hear ya brother! ❤❤❤
Great points Joy! In many ways, Pressence and ITTOD are the flip side of the same coin IMHO! ❤❤❤
Presence sounds more like robert plants first solo
Listen to burning and slow dancer
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLineI was not trying put down that you like Pressence and rank it so high. If you enjoy it that much then great. I was just expressing my thoughts on the album. Good day.:)
@@markusdickson3615 I will have to revisit that album to see if I pick up on that. :)
There are numerous Zep bootlegs I consider official releases.
If grandeur is the measure, you can’t go past Physical Graffiti
Hey Mike, aliens have landed and they say to me, we've been hearing about this Led zeppelin all the way here, who is this Led zeppelin? What album do you hand them and say Here, this is Led Zeppelin!!?

How can I really argue with your #1!!! Like I said emotionally, I LOVE LZ1!!!!
Thanx S.T.P. !❤❤❤
Presence is to clean
It can pass as a plant solo album
And my age ,I grew
Up with plant so I prefer plant over zeppelin.
So, ranking from worst to best:
CODA
Presence
Physical Graffiti
In Through the Out Door
I
Houses of the Holy
III
II
IV Zoso
I think fans can disagree on what their best songs are, but most can agree on what their worst songs are.
I disagree about HOTH.
9: Coda
8: Presence

5: Led Zeppelin II
