    Evagrius of Pontus said that a theologian is the one who prays, and the one who prays is a theologian. As an academic myself, I know literally hundreds of PhDs in Theology whose work and prayer lives are interwoven at absolutely every level. Many sit at their work desks as if in prayer; their work is an extension of their prayer and the motivation behind it. The love of God is what causes them to seek to know God better, in more ways, in more languages, and according to new insights.

    He's saying there is a difference between having intellectual knowledge of God and having a personal relationship with God. You can know every fact about Barack Obama that there is to know, but if you don't have a friendship with him, you don't spend days with him, you don't have real conversations that share thoughts, feelings, etc. you don't actually know Barack Obama. It's great to study, he's not shooting that down, but we can't put intellectual knowledge above personal relationship.

      I do not understand this. I have a block in my head when it comes to Christians and sin. Between the idea of "God has endless love no matter how bad you fall" and Mr. Piper saying they committed adultery because they dont know God. What about David's sin? I dont understand. He seems to say that falling into a gross sin disproves your true knowledge/relationship with God. And with that said, are we judging the "severity" if the sin (couldnt someone say that you snap at your wife or kids because you dont know God)? None of this is from a confrontational or holier-than-thou position. Sincerely and humbling wondering. God is absolutely always right and I am very wrong in a lot of my thinking. I am struggling a lot right now. I have realized that I do not truly know God. I do not have love for others or God. In my mind (nobody can tell, everyone I have talked to is confident that I am saved but they cannot see my cold cold heart) I do not love Gods way. I still am stuck in sin and honestly can see part of me not wanting to get rid of it (and even being indifferent to the fact that I am at rest in my sin) I see that I still WANT and love my sin. Deep down, I do not love God. This would have been crazy for me to have said 5 months ago but it is so true and I have no hope of being saved without realizing/admitting that I am so so wrong. I am the "good christian girl" and I have badly decieved myself into thinking i am good and that I am right with God because I like to have knowledge of Him and because I dont do the "major" sins. I have not ever had true conviction of my sin, just good parents who gave me strong morals and strong opinions of right and wrong. Sorry that was long, any comments/help on the first thing I said?? Please and thank you

    I love this sermon because as NT Wright says, self-control is what separates the men from the boys. And Gordon Fee says that unlike love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, that self-control is something only the individual is responsible for - the other fruit of the Spirit are a group effort, a team effort by the whole church, but self-control is personal. Hating sin and controlling self is an act of worship. Psalm 1 and the Didache teach a binary choice: you're either on the path to death or the path to eternal life, and there's no middle way, it's two opposing highways. God bless Piper for channeling Owen and Baxter and Bunyan and the Quest for godliness, where character matters, affection matters, and emotions matter, and you can't be an ice box for Jesus. The Puritans know how to melt that ice.

    Since the 1800's we've got more Christian Universities,Bible colleges of theology than in all of recorded Christian history. So what are the results of all these intensive Christian places of learning. A massive decline in the number of Christians in the West. The writing is on the wall, not only for the West but for these places of learning because they have intentionally or unintentionally supplanted the leading of the Spirit & the word of God. The spiritual crime that some of these institution leaders have committed is equating a degree or phd with spirituality, for that they must face the wrath of God.

    I would say that we should both know God and know about Him. Certainly knowing God is a priority but we must not speak as though heart knowledge and head knowledge are mutually exclusive. Suggesting this is to pose a false dichotomy. Can we say which Jesus we worship with no descriptive theology? Additionally, I would say that we are more aware of the number of theologians who commit adultery than non-theologians because of the publicity and required discipline the former draws. I say this as both a former pastor and a former Bible college teacher who has been familiar with the failings of those with and without higher education.

    So then the question is to know G-d.... to truly know G-d is to do His will (1 John 2:3-6), and not mine own (John 6:38). If Jesus is the Word (John 1:1-14), and the Word has been here since the beginning of creation, it was written in stone upon Mt Sinai (Exodus 31:18), then why do we not deny ourselves (we think Torah is done away with) and pick up the cross (Matt. 16:24)? Why do we continue to deny the teachings of Jesus who is the walking Torah (Word)? If we are to imitate Jesus (1 Cor 11:1), then why do we not imitate the Torah which is Jesus in the flesh? Maybe this is why we do not truly know G-d. I am not a Hebrew Roots person. I am not a "legalist" as so many put it (which would mean Jesus, Paul, and all those who truly followed Jesus were legalists). Maybe this is the reason so many don't know G-d. Jesus tells us over and over to follow His Father, our G-d, our heavenly Father. If Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30), and G-d does not change (Malachi 3:6), if He is not a liar or deceiver (Hebrews 6:18; 2 Tim 2:13; Num. 23:19), then why do most of the new part of the church say He lies? By saying G-d's Word has changed, we are stating that His Word was not forever, in which He clearly said His Word is forever, everlasting, never failing (Isaiah 40:8; Matt 5:18; 1 Peter 1:25; Psalm 119:89). So then I ask again, do we really know HIM if we deny HIS WORD?
    ...Daniel warned us about the Jesus that would come to change G-d's times and laws (Daniel 7:25).
    ...Paul warned us of others bringing another gospel than that which has been preached (Gal 1:6-7; 2 Cor 11:4).
    ...G-d will write His Word upon our hearts (Jer 31:33). This is the New Covenant.
    Remember that the only Scriptures they had to preach from was the Torah and the Bereans made sure it was so (Acts 17:11).
    So ask yourself again... Do I really know G-d and His Son the MESSHIACH->Christos-> Christ->Jesus?

    I would certainly agree is possible to lose God in the pursuit of theology or even study of the Bible, but he cannot claim that all PhD's in theology do not know God.

This pastor can't speak for all PhD holders of theology. It's troubling to hear that he thinks we should be less educated to be able to love God. Your level of education doesn't determine how much you fear or love God, but how much you know of God and our differing traditions across the faith. I would argue that knowing more about God helps me to love God even more...through knowledge, I gain faith and respect. I fear God just as much as I have always done in the past and as much as I always will. This minister is spreading a sad message. I pray for you brother.

      I agree with your reasoning, and I even thing Piper himself would also. The point of his speech however is that 1) studying theologie is not proof for knowing God, and it is tragic that there are many people that study theologie but do not know God. Tragic because it does no good to God, and to themself and people who regard them as 'God-knowers. He wants to make plain that knowing en trusting God with your heart is the most important, and that is not something you get by studying theologie.
      If you know God by heart and you want to know Him more for Who He is, then could theology support you in that. But knowing Him by heart, that is the most necessary

    • @notsoscared4943
      @notsoscared4943 6 лет назад +1

      gideon vos This is all based on your presumption, and not on hard facts. Do you have any valid data that proves this ? Can you prove that a Theologian is any less closer to God than you ? I think you run the risk of putting people into to neat little boxes. There is no recorded proof just your assumptions, and that is defamatory. Just because someone says that it is true doesn't make it so. Please remember you are judging others without real and substantial proof. Now tell me what it says about judging others in the bible. Jesus himself was judged and suffered this throughout his life. So was he judged that he was put to death for our sins. Does the bible not tell us that that it is in God's hands to judge, not ours.

    What huge claims. he is a master of expression, that does mean that his statements are based in fact . Perhaps start with defining a theologian, from there research how much of what he believes is the result of the study of theologians. From there determine how many ministers and pastors have degrees in theology, who then are theologians. From there never mind theologians committing adultery, consider members of ones own church who are adulterers, hey why not consider school teachers or accountants or lawyers doctors and minsters as well . He seems to have an issue with theologians, perhaps consider why that is . Btw I am not a theologian. Gods presence is everywhere, and God is open to anyone who is willing to allow God in their lives . It is hard to appreciate statements that advise us to stay away from all things not in accordance with his or anyone else's views. Taste of life, it is there to challenge us for better understanding, and ultimately to become closer to God.
