Evagrius of Pontus said that a theologian is the one who prays, and the one who prays is a theologian. As an academic myself, I know literally hundreds of PhDs in Theology whose work and prayer lives are interwoven at absolutely every level. Many sit at their work desks as if in prayer; their work is an extension of their prayer and the motivation behind it. The love of God is what causes them to seek to know God better, in more ways, in more languages, and according to new insights.
Most theologian don’t even pray nowadays that’s what he’s saying.
@@calgo6254 NO. HE'S saying one of the reasons many who have pursued academic "knowledge of God" do not truly know Him and the outright contradiction of their daily life with what they claim to believe reveals that to be the case.
Love for God =hate to sin, the more you love God the more you hate sin. It's a fact
As a secular humanist, I can tell that this gentleman has the Holy Spirit in his life!
If you believe that, why not repent and believe in Jesus?
@@loganconnell258 The bible is too restricting. It encourages a slave mentality and discourages critical thinking. No good for me. I like ppl to have freedom of thought
He's saying there is a difference between having intellectual knowledge of God and having a personal relationship with God. You can know every fact about Barack Obama that there is to know, but if you don't have a friendship with him, you don't spend days with him, you don't have real conversations that share thoughts, feelings, etc. you don't actually know Barack Obama. It's great to study, he's not shooting that down, but we can't put intellectual knowledge above personal relationship.
If that's what he's saying, then why is it wrapped in broad, judgmental, disdainful attacks on the character of academic theologians?
Well said brother :)

@@trevormaine Dr.Piper, you can also be illiterate and reject God's grace. Christ is infinitely valuable to the learned and unlearned.
I do not understand this. I have a block in my head when it comes to Christians and sin. Between the idea of "God has endless love no matter how bad you fall" and Mr. Piper saying they committed adultery because they dont know God. What about David's sin? I dont understand. He seems to say that falling into a gross sin disproves your true knowledge/relationship with God. And with that said, are we judging the "severity" if the sin (couldnt someone say that you snap at your wife or kids because you dont know God)? None of this is from a confrontational or holier-than-thou position. Sincerely and humbling wondering. God is absolutely always right and I am very wrong in a lot of my thinking. I am struggling a lot right now. I have realized that I do not truly know God. I do not have love for others or God. In my mind (nobody can tell, everyone I have talked to is confident that I am saved but they cannot see my cold cold heart) I do not love Gods way. I still am stuck in sin and honestly can see part of me not wanting to get rid of it (and even being indifferent to the fact that I am at rest in my sin) I see that I still WANT and love my sin. Deep down, I do not love God. This would have been crazy for me to have said 5 months ago but it is so true and I have no hope of being saved without realizing/admitting that I am so so wrong. I am the "good christian girl" and I have badly decieved myself into thinking i am good and that I am right with God because I like to have knowledge of Him and because I dont do the "major" sins. I have not ever had true conviction of my sin, just good parents who gave me strong morals and strong opinions of right and wrong. Sorry that was long, any comments/help on the first thing I said?? Please and thank you
Powerful message, Pastor John. There's a difference between knowing just who someone is, and knowing them personally --- same with Yahweh, our Lord and our God and our Heavenly Father. God bless all of you, Jesus Christ's name and in the Holy Spirit, Amen.
God let me use that to learn of you in this way so that I may overcome all sinful sexual desire and its offspring that bring about death. In Jesus Name as LORD I pray.
Praying for you
Amen
AMEN JESUS!!! knowing scripture and being able to quote it is nothing compared to a true relationship with our Holy Father. Praise God for this sermon!!
True. It's because their "knowledge" puffs up their pride, and clinging to (their) theology makes them push away the truth of the word.
I think this will be a big test for anyone that wants to seriously study the word as well! Oh that our relationship and love for God come before all and be the driving factor of our study. Brothers and sisters, let us pray that we do not become like the church of Ephesus in the book of Revelation, who knew so much of the word, yet lost their first love.
Childlike understanding beats PhD knowledge always when it comes to the intimate relationship of the precious eternal Christ.
God bless you John Piper! I cannot wait to share eternal Glory with you in Heaven!
ILoveGodsWord413 there is no heaven
ILoveGodsWord413 and don't tell me I will burn in hell, because i've heard that plenty of times before, but why do they tell me that? So I can be brainwashed and give money to the evil pastors of the church.
ILoveGodsWord413 That is why I am above you, and smarter since I do not get brainwashed. I listen to proven fact, not gibberish.
Beryllium Nitrate
I agree that you are above me and better and smarter than me.
But I care for you and want you to have an everlasting love from God that can wash all your sins away! That is what makes Jesus so wonderful, the fact that He could take a wretched sinner like me bound for Hell, and save me and forgive all my sins and accept me into Heaven forever!
He can do the same for you too!

Man, that is the Gospel, keep that humble heart from Our Savior!
wow what an amazing video!
Such a great message!
this is a powerful staff useful for the ministry
I love this sermon because as NT Wright says, self-control is what separates the men from the boys. And Gordon Fee says that unlike love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, that self-control is something only the individual is responsible for - the other fruit of the Spirit are a group effort, a team effort by the whole church, but self-control is personal. Hating sin and controlling self is an act of worship. Psalm 1 and the Didache teach a binary choice: you're either on the path to death or the path to eternal life, and there's no middle way, it's two opposing highways. God bless Piper for channeling Owen and Baxter and Bunyan and the Quest for godliness, where character matters, affection matters, and emotions matter, and you can't be an ice box for Jesus. The Puritans know how to melt that ice.
Since the 1800's we've got more Christian Universities,Bible colleges of theology than in all of recorded Christian history. So what are the results of all these intensive Christian places of learning. A massive decline in the number of Christians in the West. The writing is on the wall, not only for the West but for these places of learning because they have intentionally or unintentionally supplanted the leading of the Spirit & the word of God. The spiritual crime that some of these institution leaders have committed is equating a degree or phd with spirituality, for that they must face the wrath of God.
Sounds True 🤭
Correlation is not causation.
This man is a spiritual legend.
That's brilliant!!!
Powerful Truth!
This is really good..
I was thinking about this the other day and you know sometimes people do know God yet choose to sin anyway. This is called iniquity.
I am reminded of a passage.
"Do as they say not as they do"
Knowledge does not gaurantee action.
"To him that knows to do good but doeth it not. To him it is sin."
Powerful clip - and oh so true!
That last minute is critical in today's world.
Dr. Ronnie Burke should write a book on the subject. A pastor committing adultery with secretary and he is still taking money to preach.
Anyone know what specific passage in 1 Thessalonians he was talking about?
Glory to God you are preaching truth and bold way.100%true, uneducated Christians have fear of God,
Rainer Schmitz Where is your proof of this. Is there some statistical data / studies that prove this ?.
His point isn’t that education is bad. Just as many uneducated Christians as educated Christians don’t fear God.
AMEN!!!
Someone please help me with the link to the full teaching of this video
Amen and Amen!!!!
Jesus’ standard of adultery is even when you have dirty thought in your mind and you meditate on that dirty thought you already commit adultery.
How many preachers overcome dirty thoughts?
To each his own
He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the LORD.
Is he ok?just asking
cute scientist1001 he's still good
yeap, here goes nothing. `probably more' means he must have some statistics. unless he has them, his evaluation could be interpreted in all the wrong ways. certainly phd's can act out of pride, but to be completely honest, so do the 'meak' and 'less educated' or 'non-educated' people. some are downright ignorant, but are certain that whatever first hand interpretation they give to biblical passage is Spirit inspired. so, let's keep the perspectives in all truth.
You can reas so much theology, and still end up a Calvinist...thus now knowing God.
I would say that we should both know God and know about Him. Certainly knowing God is a priority but we must not speak as though heart knowledge and head knowledge are mutually exclusive. Suggesting this is to pose a false dichotomy. Can we say which Jesus we worship with no descriptive theology? Additionally, I would say that we are more aware of the number of theologians who commit adultery than non-theologians because of the publicity and required discipline the former draws. I say this as both a former pastor and a former Bible college teacher who has been familiar with the failings of those with and without higher education.
Christian hedonism.../ I love it. Praise God
I have though of this . What good is it to know all these things if there is no love for God ?

Knowledge puffs up ,but love (agape) edifies
Pastor, you left out "infinitely holy"
Amen
So true
Wow
You're phd and still say that God needs to do bad things (although with good intentions) for his own glory.
So this guy has no sin in his life?
Filosofisch voer if course he does! I bet if you asked him that question he could list his atrocities. No one is sinless this side of heaven, however? Do you sin deliberately? Or just because your weak?
I know exactly what he means, I grew up in Church was in Bible study my entire young adult life, even co-lead a youth group. Was in a Christian band, spreading the gospel to other bands, and club owners, and occasionally kids in the audience. Meanwhile I was cheating on my wife and sexting my neighbors....eventually ending in divorce.
There is a difference between knowing Gods word, and knowing God!
sin, like many evils, in the world, is no respecter of persons....
I love John Piper
Gospel means good news! The bad news is we have all sinned and deserve the wrath to come. But Jesus the Messiah died for our sins, was buried, and then raised on the third day, according to the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and right now is seated at the Father's right hand. Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
Well, look at Karl Barth!
Sheeeeeeeeeeshhhhhhh
The difference between a PhD (and other intelligent people without a PhD) and naive christians like that guy is: The former ones would not make such a stupid claim without proof.
ulysses2711 I totally agree with you. Where is the statistical data / studies that prove this to be fact ?
So then the question is to know G-d.... to truly know G-d is to do His will (1 John 2:3-6), and not mine own (John 6:38). If Jesus is the Word (John 1:1-14), and the Word has been here since the beginning of creation, it was written in stone upon Mt Sinai (Exodus 31:18), then why do we not deny ourselves (we think Torah is done away with) and pick up the cross (Matt. 16:24)? Why do we continue to deny the teachings of Jesus who is the walking Torah (Word)? If we are to imitate Jesus (1 Cor 11:1), then why do we not imitate the Torah which is Jesus in the flesh? Maybe this is why we do not truly know G-d. I am not a Hebrew Roots person. I am not a "legalist" as so many put it (which would mean Jesus, Paul, and all those who truly followed Jesus were legalists). Maybe this is the reason so many don't know G-d. Jesus tells us over and over to follow His Father, our G-d, our heavenly Father. If Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30), and G-d does not change (Malachi 3:6), if He is not a liar or deceiver (Hebrews 6:18; 2 Tim 2:13; Num. 23:19), then why do most of the new part of the church say He lies? By saying G-d's Word has changed, we are stating that His Word was not forever, in which He clearly said His Word is forever, everlasting, never failing (Isaiah 40:8; Matt 5:18; 1 Peter 1:25; Psalm 119:89). So then I ask again, do we really know HIM if we deny HIS WORD?
...Daniel warned us about the Jesus that would come to change G-d's times and laws (Daniel 7:25).
...Paul warned us of others bringing another gospel than that which has been preached (Gal 1:6-7; 2 Cor 11:4).
...G-d will write His Word upon our hearts (Jer 31:33). This is the New Covenant.
Remember that the only Scriptures they had to preach from was the Torah and the Bereans made sure it was so (Acts 17:11).
So ask yourself again... Do I really know G-d and His Son the MESSHIACH->Christos-> Christ->Jesus?
Gaspar Cortez Why can't you just write God. Why G-d ?
Orthodoxy, Orthopraxy and Orthopathy.... I realize I was missing the final one....
Could you explain that please?
@@astonifyed Orthodoxy ( not just denomination) = Right teaching, Orthopraxy = Right practice, Orthopathy = Right passions.
So any kind of knowledge of God is over rated? how about when normal preaching does not reach a layer a doctor and an engineer, but when they hear apologetic and intellectual stuff they are converted??? so what would you say to this?? this is just an attack on smart people from lazy people
Piper has PhD. So hes not a lazy person. And as you know God chosen what is fulshiness to the world to make his path of salvation. So you dont get converted on intellectual level, but on the spirit (heart) level.
49634900 God also says, do not judge less you be judged. It is also my understanding, and this is acknowledged throughout the bible, that God himself only has the authority to judge.
I understand the sentiment here; most people consider PhD's pious, condescending, and out of touch with reality. However, a broad statement like this is a gross mischaracterization.
I would certainly agree is possible to lose God in the pursuit of theology or even study of the Bible, but he cannot claim that all PhD's in theology do not know God.
Piper certainly expects nuance in the understanding of some of his positions, like Calvinism for example. It is troubling to see him refuse to return the favor for others.
Did he say all phd's in theology do not know God?
Agree with Bob Polo. John Piper didn’t mention all Theology. Of course you have to know Theology but if knowing it replaces intimacy with GOD and just know it and not walk it then it’s a different story.
I think what he is hitting at, is some study theology and miss the whole mark when they don’t just have a simple relationship with Christ
now you’re talking my language John
This is a biased message. I have a doctorate in theology, but I learned the nature of God and God's true Holy Word way before I ever studied at a Seminary. This pastor can't speak for all PhD holders of theology. It's true that you don't need a PhD or any type of certificate to know God, but just because one chooses education in religious philosophy doesn't mean they don't know the true Word of God. In addition, bashing other believers over a theological title is not God-like!
It's troubling to hear that he thinks we should be less educated to be able to love God. Your level of education doesn't determine how much you fear or love God, but how much you know of God and our differing traditions across the faith. I would argue that knowing more about God helps me to love God even more...through knowledge, I gain faith and respect. I fear God just as much as I have always done in the past and as much as I always will. This minister is spreading a sad message. I pray for you brother.
I agree with your reasoning, and I even thing Piper himself would also. The point of his speech however is that 1) studying theologie is not proof for knowing God, and it is tragic that there are many people that study theologie but do not know God. Tragic because it does no good to God, and to themself and people who regard them as 'God-knowers. He wants to make plain that knowing en trusting God with your heart is the most important, and that is not something you get by studying theologie.
If you know God by heart and you want to know Him more for Who He is, then could theology support you in that. But knowing Him by heart, that is the most necessary
gideon vos This is all based on your presumption, and not on hard facts. Do you have any valid data that proves this ? Can you prove that a Theologian is any less closer to God than you ? I think you run the risk of putting people into to neat little boxes. There is no recorded proof just your assumptions, and that is defamatory. Just because someone says that it is true doesn't make it so. Please remember you are judging others without real and substantial proof. Now tell me what it says about judging others in the bible. Jesus himself was judged and suffered this throughout his life. So was he judged that he was put to death for our sins. Does the bible not tell us that that it is in God's hands to judge, not ours.
His point was on Knowing God essentially not just in knowing about God.Its about having an intimate personal relationship. If study the bible you will know the Bible,If you seek God you will Know God.
What huge claims. he is a master of expression, that does mean that his statements are based in fact . Perhaps start with defining a theologian, from there research how much of what he believes is the result of the study of theologians. From there determine how many ministers and pastors have degrees in theology, who then are theologians. From there never mind theologians committing adultery, consider members of ones own church who are adulterers, hey why not consider school teachers or accountants or lawyers doctors and minsters as well . He seems to have an issue with theologians, perhaps consider why that is . Btw I am not a theologian. Gods presence is everywhere, and God is open to anyone who is willing to allow God in their lives . It is hard to appreciate statements that advise us to stay away from all things not in accordance with his or anyone else's views. Taste of life, it is there to challenge us for better understanding, and ultimately to become closer to God.

Because they “don’t know God?” No it’s because they are sinners. Like John Piper. Like me. This is terrible pastoral application.
John you talk alot, do you ever step out from behind that lectern and engage the millions of souls going to hell? Why is the church deliberately not reaching the lost and allowing millions of sinners to go to hell?
The Pastor certainly is an excitable chap. As to adultery why does this topic occupy his mind so? The first mention of adultery, as far as I am aware, is found in the New Testament when God sired a son by seducing a woman already betrothed to another man.
