The relay you pulled under the steering column was your baro sensor. Aka your barometric pressure sensor. It reads the barometric pressure for the pcm to know conditions like elevation and adjusts your fuel injection for such
Note to self. Self, when removing the steering column from an automatic truck, remember to unhook and remove the transmission linkage BEFORE dropping the steering column on the floor. 🤣😂 . This I learned last night
Lil Uri yes some small things change like interior parts and crossmember may be different but large parts bolt up. The t case is different but same pattern
So I’ve got one more question. I’ve been reading and most people say like you that I can run my auto pcm with the manual but my question is if I buy a chip and some injectors for the truck to I just give them the auto pcm code and tell them it’s a manual trans and they can tune it from there?
Was it just plug and play between the auto and manual wiring harness? I have a manual harness so just wondering if the truck will start when I plug it into where the auto harness was.
Looking to do this on my super duty 7.3, will I need a new transfer case or can I just get the input shaft from a zf? and does anything need to be done on the driveshaft?
Im getting ready to do this in a small block 4 wheel drive truck. What did you do about the auto trans coolant lines into the radiator? Ive looked everywhere and cant find any info. Thanks
I just done this swap and my donor truck did have a tranny block spacer behind the manual and so did the auto...I didn't check for any differences though..I just swapped them.
How did you end up running the transmission Cross member. I'm looking at doing the swap to my 95 2wd because I'm now on trans number 3 and I think it's time to manual swap
Kenny Roohr Well it’s a heavy duty trans. There is a bellhousing Mount then a rear top mount for specific use like a splitter etc. I used the rear top mount also because I wanted to marry the t case but it’s not needed. If ur keeping a ford engine the bell mount may not be enough give me some more info on your plan
Peterson auto I have a 95 f250 7.3L 2wd powerstroke makeing between 350 and 400 to wheels and the truck just burnt up it's 3rd automatic trans. I am really starting to look into manual swapping it but I'm trying to find out all the little pieces and get everything i will need so when this trans blows I will have everything ready to go for the swap. My last trans was moderitly build and I blew it in 4500 miles or 4 weeks
Kenny Roohr my bad. I thought you wanted a heavy duty trans like my other build. This is the zf5 swap. All bolt in and easy. Use a stock zf5 crossmember for the swap nothing custom holes are even in the frame
Kenny Roohr To do it right and swap everything out give it a good weekend. But you can do pedals and the small things first then finish up the next chance.
Christopher Macedo your auto trans has a neutral saftey switch the manual only has the backup switch ford used the same plug so the manual backup light switch will plug right into the auto harness
So I won’t have overdrive anymore? I thought that was what 5th gear was for. Having trouble getting my pedal assembly in right now but other than that rolling along quite nicely. Your video helped me a loooot! Thank you!
I haven’t a clue on trying to get it to start I bypassed the clutch position sensor thinking that’ll do it but still nothing I’m not sure what to do now
Clean swap👍🏻 looking at doing the same to my 97 single cab long bed. Was wondering how many hours the swap took? I have another truck but I’d really like to just sell that truck to buy a donor/parts truck
Peterson auto you now about where it’s located on a 97? I’ve been told it’s by the hole in the firewall for slave master cylinder, but I can’t seem to find it on my truck🤷🏼♂️
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. Did you have to change the ECM or any wiring converting from auto to manual? Buddy of mine was concerned the conversion would xuasw a runaway motor or no start. Going from e4od to zf6 behind a 6.8 v10.
emma taxes only wiring that needs changed is the trans harness to get backup lights to work and add the clutch pedal switch. There is no need to change Ecu or any other wiring and it would not cause a tunaway
@@Petersonauto I was concerned also, because my 94 has a different wiring harness all the way to the transfer case. I was told that if I don't, I would have to leave the mlps in. Also, isn't the steering column wire harness different?
@@tracyhill7960 the under dash wiring is there for either setup you just pull the clutch pedal plug and plug it in. For the trans and t case you can bypass or replace it with the manual wiring harness.

@@Petersonauto Okay, thank you! I also had a question about the overdrive? Why would you need any wires for that if its all mechanical? (just put transmission into OD, right?)
Gavin Moose removed it and put the manual harness in. If you don’t have the harness jumper the neutral safety switch and cut and splice for the reverse switch
Austin Chilcote yes you can. However you would want to still remove the auto shifter from the column. You would have a hole in the cover where the shifter came out
Jake Westergren i think 2wd is connected with a ujoint flange thing.. you need to get a driveshaft from a manual truck that is the same cab and bed configuration that you have or longer and then you just have to shorten the driveshaft so its cheaper than making one from scratch.
Do you remember the length of the the prop shaft, i have and ext cab long box and I'm trying to gather all the parts before i rip into it and cant find a definitive length. Thanks
I just removed the shifter column and called it a day. I have access to a manual column but i couldnt justify swapping it all out just for that. Also i have to fab up a crossmember cuz i cant find a 4x4 zf5 crossmember anywhere. Swap is really easy and straightforward if you have all the needed parts anyone can do it.
Phillip There is a harness that runs from the firewall back along the frame to the trans. There is a small sensor for the backup lights this harness connects to the sensor. For what you need I’m not a mind reader and have no idea what is on the trick currently. But ya need more help I’ll do what I can through the internet
Before you do anything, the plugin on the transmission for the reverse lights is near the top of the transmission towards the front on the drivers side. Just check and see if the plug just came unplugged. If the person who did your swap did not get a manual transmission style harness and PCM, then you will not be able to plug in the reverse lights, because the harnesses are different. If not, then whoever did your swap did it the same way i did my auto to manual swap, and hopefully I can help you understand why you don't haver reverse lights. For my auto to manual swap, I did not get a manual PCM and instead used the automatic PCM. More than likely whoever did your swap did the same thing. This means that you still have the automatic style wire harness that connects the PCM to the transmission. If you look underneath the truck where the harness is (runs down the drivers side of the frame) you will probably find that the only thing plugged in is the plug that goes to the transfer case. The transmission Range Sensor (which is only needed for the automatic transmission) will be tucked up somewhere out of the way and not attached to the manual transmission. What this is doing is fooling your trucks automatic style PCM to think it is in neutral all the time, which allows you to start and drive the vehicle and gives you smooth throttle response. However since your PCM thinks you are always in neutral, you will not have reverse lights. The best way to fix would be to get a manual transmission wire harness with a manual transmission PCM. That way, you can plug in the reverse lights and you won't have to "fool" the PCM into thinking its still an automatic that's in neutral all the time. Replacing the PCM and harness is my plan of attack, and although its pricey, it will "finish" the swap properly and the truck will operate as if it came from the factory. If you want to splice the wiring and make your own plug to tie the reverse lights into the wiring harness I'm sure its been done but unfortunately I can't give you any advice there. Hopefully that helps.
