I know some find the 2MT "plain" or "boring," but there's something so charming about it that way. It's perfectly proportioned, like the exact middle-of-the-road locomotive.
I definitely agree with you on that one! I've always loved little black tender engines like this. The very fact that they're not meant to be special makes them so much more interesting to me. Thanks for watching 😃
I’ve actually always thought the 2MT had a bit of an odd shape. I really don’t get why others think they are so boring (it’s honestly one of my favourite prototypes).
It’s probably the only British Rail designed loco I like because it’s unique and utility look, stands out against my usual affinity for the streamlined elegant express locos of the Big 4 Era
This might be the first time I fully watched the running session on one of these reviews since you detailed Pitley and jesus christ it looks so outstandingly good. Excellent work on it all
Thanks... I think 😅 There's been a lot of progress to the layout since it was last seen on camera. I'm just working my way through editing all the videos at the moment so stay tuned for those! Thanks for watching 👍
I’ve just stumbled across your channel after I was after a review of this model in particular. Thanks for a detailed but not laborious review - and one that doesn’t explain how to open a box. Nice looking layout too! I’ve subscribed now, and looking forward to ploughing through your videos. Thank you!
Really glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I've never been a fan of unboxing - I get why it's useful in some cases but for model railways I just want to see what the thing looks like and how it runs 😅 Enjoy ploughing the back catalog - there's plenty to choose from - and thanks for subscribing 😃
Great review! I’m definitely going to pick one of these up! Despite the missing features, I actually think this is one of Hornby’s best models yet, even if it is a bit overpriced… Even though many people find the prototype quite boring, it is actually one of my favourites as well, which is partly why I’m so keen to get one!! Also your layout looks fantastic! The flower effect in the one field is amazing, and I really like the rock face too! And the backdrop makes a huge difference as well!!
Yeah definitely, if Hornby had released this a few years ago (as originally anticipated) then I think we'd all be amazed by this loco. As it is we've seen what Hornby can do now so this seems a bit old hat but certainly by my standards it's a great model to have on the layout. Glad you like the layout, there's lots more videos being edited as we speak documenting the new modules! Thanks for watching 😃
You've changed the order of a few of the pieces of the modular layout. It is amazing how it looks so different, but still right at the same time. Well done again.
That's the point of the modular layout, it goes together in lots of different configurations. There may also be a few new modules that will be making their official debut in some new videos coming soon 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
It'll all be explained in the next series of modular railway videos which are currently being edited so hopefully not too far away now. Thanks for watching 😃
We were over at Loughborough last weekend at the gala run, and this loco featured strongly. Although not a great fan of British trains, I must admit that it caught my attention as being a bit like a little busybody, bustling around with its little consist, and making itself useful. I'd like to see one in Gauge 1, my preferred scale, and in live-steam as well - 'natch!
Having driven 78018 I can say the scale is pretty good, but the gap between tender and engine is to great, Hornby should have used a spring loaded close coupler. There is also a drivers seat missing. 78018 was missing the speedo at the time I drove her to Leicester North and back. Lovely engine to drive and is recommended.
The Ivatt 2mt is one of my favourite tender engines. Hornby's model looks very nice. My only criticism with this is: The tender being attached and not uncouplerable. This is a common thing with newer models from Hornby.
Hi there, newer models from Hornby (such as the P2, upgraded A3 and Dublo A4) actually have a plug in tender so it can easily be detached. This 2MT model has the standard drawbar Hornby have used for many years now, though it's still possible to separate the tender by removing a single screw and unplugging the wires. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
@@NotSoSpookyGuy I think it still counts as a new model from Hornby, since this is its first release. After all the Accurascale Deltic was announced in 2018 and that only arrived last year... I think most people would still consider that a new model. Thanks for watching 😃
I'm far from an expert but to my knowledge there's no issues with the wheel spacing. I haven't seen anything from those who do know their stuff that suggests there's anything wrong with it either. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy thanks. I was just started my short vids. Will purchase this previous model and once I launch my videos officially hope you will find content or rather my layout as big fund. Regards Michelle@Tauraco00
When a boy in the 1950s, my bedroom overlooked Yarm Tunnel on the then extremely busy Leeds Northern branch. Most mornings Ca. 08.00, the tiny goods yard and coal drops at Yarm would be shunted by one of this class - that would finish each shunt actually within the short tunnel. I recall the loco was chiefly No. 78015 of Northallerton MPD (Shedcode 51J). Once she had departed with her "pickup" northwards, steam & smoke would drift through into view for quite some time afterwards. I'm unable to recall any of this class on a passenger working. I later modified the basically similar "00" LMS 2-6-0 into a passable representation, but shall very likely purchase one of these highly cute (Yes, "CHARMING"!!! of models.)
If that bothers you then just shift up the drawbar for a closer connection. The issue you'll have is that it may not go round tight corners or through small radius points. Remember Hornby have to cater for a large variety of layouts. Thanks for watching 😃
An excellent revview as always and looking forward to recieving 78006 in green in due course. You can tell it is an "end of an era" model as it is, I think, the last new release from Hornby that doesn't have firebox flicker etc. with the delays its a shame they couldn't work some in such as 21 pin DCC
Awesome, hopefully the green ones don't take too much longer! Yes it's definitely the last loco in this transition period. I spoke to a couple of people at Hornby about this and they said going back to rework certain features would have caused even more delays. I very much got the feeling that they just wanted to release it and shift focus onto new models. It's still a worthy model though and in my opinion having an 8 pin VS a 21 pin connection doesn't really make much different on a steam loco anyway. Thanks for watching 😃
I’ve only got two Standards, a Brit and a 9F. I’d forgotten this was coming out, and one of these will be my third Standard. I love the Ivatt 2MT that this is an update of, and it will fit alongside very well. A good balanced review as well. Thank you.
Well that's up to you as the individual. Hopefully from the video you can see the level of detail you're getting and how well it runs. Based on how you feel about those key points, you can decide if the price is worth it and ultimately whether it's worth adding to your collection or saving your money for something else instead. Thanks for watching 👍
Personally, I think this model runs a little too slowly. I'm not expecting a rocketship by any means, but on DC at 50% power it is a bit slower than I'd think it maybe should be. Having said that, that is my only criticism of the model. The build quality of the model is fantastic and there isn't any stray glue or bits dropping off. It's a really well made, good model. Hornby have done a good job with it. Cheers
Interesting, personally for me I always think having more range in the low end makes for a much more controllable loco. On my Gaugemaster controller I had it moving a nice trundle at around 30% with the crawl kicking in around 10-15%. Definitely can't fault the quality of the model, it definitely appears as though Hornby have got a handle on their QC and supply issues now. Thanks for watching 😃
Compared to the continental Ho engines I have, German and Italian, OO UK models are always overgeared. With this model less speedy than the average OO engine, I think Hornby takes the right direction. This is a branchline engine, not an HST.
@@OlivierGabin I couldn't agree with you more Olivier, it's definitely nice to see Hornby going in this direction. I think the best slow running 00 gauge loco I've come across so far is the Planet Industrials Victory - that has such amazing slow speed that I actually had to increase the CV settings on the decoder as it was SO much slower than all my other locos 😅
I will agree it does have really good slow speed performance. For some reason, it performs better on my combi than on the model d controller that i used on the mainlines.
Certainly on my layout it hasn't put a foot wrong yet. Seems like a perfect locos both for hauling trains and shunting operation too. Thanks for watching 😃
I love these locos. They could put in a turn of speed and were pretty powerful for their size, often as powerful as a class 3. This looks like a really nice model.
I have to admit my experience of the real life locos at heritage railways was definitely what sparked my own interest with this model. Thanks for watching 😃
This looks like the prototype, and appears very well detailed. It is not suitable for my "southern" likes, but I do have a soft spot for them, and the original Ivatt! It's just that price that stops me from buying one now! So I will wait for the retailers offers!
I definitely think Hornby have done a great job on them... you can always make a Rule 1 exception, perhaps it's on loan. 😉 If the past is anything to go by, little black tender engines don't seem to sell that well for Hornby (in comparison to The Flying Scotsman or cute little industrial engines) so if you're willing to wait a bit I'd say there's a really good chance you could pick up a bargain at some point. Thanks for watching 👍
Yeah motion is amazing isn't it! If you do decide to get one I'd recommend you order using the links in the description if you want to help out the channel at no extra cost to yourself 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
Awesome, as long as you're happy with it that's all that matters! I think this is often the case with newer releases these days. If you already have an existing model from the last 10-15 years then the new one isn't much of an upgrade (assuming there were no major faults with the original). I think this is why manufacturers are starting to add the additional features now such as the firebox LED, pre-fitted stay alive/speaker, etc - to make the upgrade more worthwhile. Thanks for watching and subscribing too! 😃
Well, personally I think they've done a bang-up job on this and I wouldn't hesitate to get one (maybe two!). A quibble or two, like the lack of a footplate crew, can be overcome. Looks and runs beautifully, I'd say. Especially for the smaller layout where a 9F, A4 or the like might seem out of place. Doesn't it look great with the three coaches, or maybe 6-7 goods wagons? Very tough to top. Wonderful review and great looking layout with the backdrop.
Oh absolutely, minor things like that can easily be added it just would have been nice for Hornby to have included them given the increase in price. Thanks for watching 😃
I believe the delay was caused by multiple covid shutdowns to the factory. Some regions of China were affected by these more than others and I assume this was one of the worst hit. I believe there may also have been some delays in materials reaching the factory for similar reasons.
That may have been part of the problem but I think there may have been more at play. Don't forget the 9F, P2, Lion, Turbomotive and TT:120 Range (to mention just a few) were all announced after the 2MT and arrived before it. Thanks for watching 😃
@@jameshardy4354 Hard to say really... I thought they might rework their A4 tooling like they didn't with the A3/A1 models a while back but then they announced all the Great Gathering locos as Dublo models so probably not now. Perhaps a small tank engine, feels like its been a while since we've had one of those. A retooled Battle of Britain would be nice too. That said, I've heard *rumours* that Hornby *might* move away from the annual announcement and will start announcing new models once they're close to release, similar to how Bachmann now does it.
Looks like Hornby have raised their game with this one, detailing especially including all that pipework looks really great. I don't tend to buy BR locos of that era but this would be tempting. A really excellent review and extremely well done thanks. The layout is looking wonderful too.
Yeah, I definitely think if this had come out around the same time as the 9F it would be getting a lot more attention. As you say that pipework is really well done! Glad you enjoyed it and hopefully there will be some more layout updates along the way soon. Thanks for watching 🤩
I don’t know, as you suggests, how a £16 price increase would change someone’s opinion about this apparently great model. You like it, you have the money for it, you get it. If the knowledge that you could have had it cheaper stops one from buying it, that would be a bit sad.
You're comparing the old RRP to the current retailer price there. If you compare the original RRP and current RRP there's a difference of £38 which is a bit more significant. Similarly the retailers would have originally had these for pre-order at around £160 but have had to increase that price to the current £196 mark to still be able to make a profit. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I'm comparing the price you paid vs the price you would have to pay.if you hadn't pre-order it and bought it today. I think that seems a fair comparison.
@@macnavi Right but that's a very specific situation which no longer applies. Most people will have pre-ordered with retailers at the original £160 price and then been forced to pay more. I'm not saying it's a bad model by any means, I think my review speaks for itself on that front, but I have to take more than my own situation into account when I make these reviews.
I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Very nice steam engine runs great on your beautiful layout. Being from America don't get chance to see them in person. If I could I would buy one. Thanks for sharing this little beauty with us. GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
I bought the bachmann one a year or two ago and I didn't even realise that the real thing was cluttered with pipework! the bachmann one is way more simple!
I'm not as familiar with the Bachmann model but I have to admit it was the complex pipework on the prototype that drew me to these models initially. I remember being very impressed with it when I saw the Hornby samples this time last year. Thanks for watching 😃
Does the engine have a droopy front right buffer when viewed from the front? Yup, lots of "pipework" but the author could tell us what it is for perhaps?
Perhaps very slightly but certainly not noticeable under normal viewing conditions. The pipework would be for a variety of things, injectors, top feed, safety valve, whistle, etc. Thanks for watching 👍
Can't say I've seen any wobble from this model - unless you're talking about on the rolling road? Pretty much everything wobbles on that (it's more to do with how I've set it up rather than the model itself) so I wouldn't use that as a benchmark. No, the 2MT has a 5 pole motor, there is a flywheel included. As I showed in the video, I was very happy with the slow crawl on this model. Thanks for watching 😃
Soon! I wish I could release them straight away but the honest truth is that there's close 35hrs of footage to edit down into a manageable video. Thanks for watching 😃
T.b.f. I think that the lack of flickering firebox, engine crew and boxing just points towards cutting corners, does not justify the increase in cost. The gap between tender and engine ,, well you would have to jump across . Where would the TTS sound speaker go?
I don't think it's really cutting corners if those features were never stated to be part of this model to begin with. The increase in cost is more likely to be associated with materials and workers wages. For the tender gap you can easily close up the drawbar if you prefer a closer coupling - but this will affect the models ability to run through train set style curves and points. The speaker goes in the tender with the decoder although I would recommend using the new TXS system rather than TTS now, especially as there's a dedicated 2MT sound profile due for release in a few months. Thanks for watching 👍
What is it about people wanting firebox flicker. The doors would be closed most of the time, so would not see it. I have 78054 on order and at it current price is still a lot cheaper that European, American or Australian steam location models.
I'd say the shiny tyres are more noticeable in the close ups under extreme studio lighting than they are under more normal circumstances. They do have some light blackening to them as I have other locos with much more shiny wheels than these - but obviously it wouldn't take much to blacken them fully if that's what someone wanted to do. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy aaah cheers for that....only going off your shots and the promo shots that are about. Makes sense that they aren't as noticeable at normal viewing. Lovely loco other than that, bit big for my 2 layouts or I could be tempted
Thanks for the review. Good looking loco and I am sure it was worth the wait. I still think Hornby could have brought it more up to date like their newer releases, why not on such a good loco, would it really have taken much extra time?
Yep, pretty much standard for all models these days - aside from some tiny intricate parts on more complex motion setups, ie: Stephenson's valve gear. Thanks for watching 😃
Im surprised British Railways gave such a small tender engine lining, then again they wanted their standard locos to look smart as in the mid-50s these things were brand new, heck all the Standard locos got padded seats for the crew 😂 Looks like a nice model but I'd rather get a used Ivatt Class 2 from Bachmann (and not the tank engine version I had one of them and its own valve gear shredded itself)
I think it was just the standard way BR painted all their locos - even the Standard 4 Tank engines got this style of lining so I imagine they just wanted everything to look consistent. Thanks for watching 😃
Yes, while we 00 gauge modellers here in the UK love to have a good moan about the price I think we often forget that HO models can often cost a lot more than what we're used to paying! Thanks for watching 😃
I think Hornby has far to many other business interests, they need to scale down their involvement in non railway products and get this better as many other manufacture's are going to leave Hornby well behind, hope this is a turning point, they need to get back to their roots, which of coarse was model railways...great review...
So what happens to those whose hobby is Scalextric or building Airfix kits? Hornby is flying the flag for a lot of different hobbies out there. Furthermore I suspect that if they suddenly dumped everything but their model railway range, the investors would immediately pull out and Hornby would simply cease to exist at all. I would argue that Hornby are starting to make big improvements already. The P2, the Turbomotive and the recent 9F were all received very well. The latest sample of the upcoming Black 5 indicate that will be a very impressive model too. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Yes, fully understand, But other model railway manufactures, such as Bachmann, have had consistency in the quality of their products, they have always had better finish and build, have stronger motors and last more than a few runs before parts brake off, or just plain burn out, something Hornby has had a great deal of trouble with over the last 10 years or more...and really cater for the more serious modeller and not following stupid trends, such as steam punk and other TV related rubbish...
@@paulkandi I suppose it all depends on your own experience. Personally I've had to send back more Bachmann locos for return/repair than Hornby locos. Bachmann are generally one of the more expensive brands out there too. As for Hornby chasing trends, perhaps they are spread a bit thin but they're also the only manufacturer who caters to the whole market: from beginners buying a train set, to the Railroad range for those on a budget, right up to the full fat detailed models. I don't think anyone else is doing that and they're bringing a lot more people into the hobby as a result. There's no simple answer either way but personally I don't think Hornby focusing purely on it's full fat Railways or Dublo ranges is the solution.
That would be odd if that were the case. The manufacturers are generally pretty good at getting those sorts of things right these days. The online "experts" haven't drawn attention to anything like that either and nothing tends to get past them. Thanks for watching 👍
Im happy these are back in the Hornby catalouge but......why are they STILL using 8 pin decoders? Everyone knows that Next18 is by far the better choice for model these days. Small, no wires to tuck in anywhere, provision for all the sounds and light functions you could ever dream of. But for some reason Hornby seem to refuse to use anything other than 8pin decoder sockets!! AAAAAAAAAAARG
They've already moved over to the 21 Pin socket for newer releases such as the 9F, P2 & Turbomotive. As I explained in the video this is the end of the transition period between the two. Thanks for watching 👍
I wouldn't say they're "missing features" since they were never announced to be part of this model. Hornby has upped their game for their more recent announcements but obviously going back (again) to rework this model would have caused even further delays. The drawbar and wire connection is the same system Hornby have used on all their tender locos for the past 10 years or so. As I said in the video, there was always going to be a transition period and this should be the end of it. Thanks for watching 👍
Much delayed, lacking current quality features, yet a very high price in keeping with those current quality models. I fear many will not accept this, maybe delay purchase?
The sad thing is that, had this model come out a year or so ago it would have been incredibly good. Now that we're aware of what Hornby can do though it seems this loco isn't getting the attention it deserves despite being a really good model. Thanks for watching 👍
Don't buy it then, it's as simple as that. The easiest way to show manufacturers the price is too high is to vote with your wallet, if enough people feel the same way then prices will come down. Thanks for watching 👍
@@MACK_3D Sorry but that is the way it came across. The standard of Locomotives that Hornby are producing now in RTR form is the very highest. I have two of the new 9F's and recently taken delivery of a Turbomotive. Nothing can describe them other than awesome. Furthermore things such as packaging has improved tenfold. These improvements, perhaps it just coincidence have appeared since a certain person stepped down. One thing is for sure though TT:120 is destined for failure and was a project built upon one man's ego.

Hi there...I almost purchased this previous model....love the Tender. The wheel placement correct?....great reviewvof this new model
I later modified the basically similar "00" LMS 2-6-0 into a passable representation, but shall very likely purchase one of these highly cute (Yes, "CHARMING"!!! of models.)
Now that these are a year or so old I've seen some of them reduced slightly so seems like it's a good time to pick one up. Thanks for watching 😃
The one thing I've always found off putting is the gap between loco and tender. In reality, the poor fireman couldn't keep jumping over.
Thank you.
Thanks Tom, glad you enjoyed the review. Yeah the 2MT should fit in really nicely with those two! Thanks for watching 😃
Hi there.Agree it is charming in its own right..however how do you decide if it is worth adding to your collection?
Well that's up to you as the individual. Hopefully from the video you can see the level of detail you're getting and how well it runs. Based on how you feel about those key points, you can decide if the price is worth it and ultimately whether it's worth adding to your collection or saving your money for something else instead. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy hey there...@Tauraco00
Absolutely beautiful model That Model Railway Guy, love it running with the coaches stopping at the station and the run round to the head of the train
Thanks David! It's great to finally be able to run this loco on the layout after waiting so long. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching 😃
Looks to be well worth the wait and possibly worth the money if it runs that well, perfect for my small layout.
If the past is anything to go by, little black tender engines don't seem to sell that well for Hornby (in comparison to The Flying Scotsman or cute little industrial engines) so if you're willing to wait a bit I'd say there's a really good chance you could pick up a bargain at some point. Thanks for watching 👍
I think it's a fantastic loco, runs really well and I think the coupling rods are mesmerising to watch, certainly thinking about getting one 😀
Yeah motion is amazing isn't it! If you do decide to get one I'd recommend you order using the links in the description if you want to help out the channel at no extra cost to yourself 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
I'll be sticking with my Bachmann 2MT, had this been £140 I'd have jumped at it as it looks nice. Subbed
They should do a snow drift pack with 78018
It does come with a snowplough that can be attached into the front NEM socket, similar to the J36 models. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy what steam locomotives do you think hornby will announce next year
@@jameshardy4354 Hard to say really...
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy the is still a few models in the range that go back a long way that need retooling
Great review, looks good and runs well.....
Thanks David, it's certainly a great little loco from Hornby! Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I have missed that the original price was £160. I thought it was £180. Btw, nobody is forced. You can still say no. 🤗

My pleasure, it's a great little model from Hornby and certainly plays into it's no-frills workhorse identity! Thank for watching 😃
My Husband has just bought 2 of them for his layout
Awesome, they're great models so I hope he's happy with them. Thanks for watching 😃
Very realistic wobble at medium speed. No look under the bonnet ? 3 pole, no flywheel, does have good, slow crawl performance !
Now your teasing us please bring out the next layout video
@@andrewwarcup684 It's a welcome feature to have for the times where it would be open - it's similar to having cab lighting on diesel/electric locos.
Lovely model, just a shame about the shiny edge to the tyres....
Footplate clearance over the drivers is higher at the rear . . .
Nope, there's black pipework over the other drivers but not on the rear one. You can see this in the close ups.
Thank you. @@ThatModelRailwayGuy
Super Valve gear and linkages. They MOVE !
Thanks for watching 😃
hi, prize really attractive 👍 it's not the same with HornbyJouef for frenchmodels 😭😭
Looking at the static view in the first part of the video, the pony truck wheels look way to wide, can't really see driving wheels
That would be odd if that were the case. The manufacturers are generally pretty good at getting those sorts of things right these days. The online "experts" haven't drawn attention to anything like that either and nothing tends to get past them. Thanks for watching 👍
I should clarify, I mean the tyres that contact running rail
The fact that it is less expensive less expensive that the railroad flying Scotsman. Unfortunately I am too broke to affor either
@@Sashin-d8t This is incorrect, the current Railroad Flying Scotsman retails for £134.99, considerably less than the 2MT goaff.pro/zgkgis
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Oh sorry. This is still a good deal. Especially for a new tooling
Slightly disappointed to be honest for price, missing features you should have for £200 and the draw bar wire is not hidden very well.
180£ is bonkers lol
Don't buy it then, it's as simple as that. The easiest way to show manufacturers the price is too high is to vote with your wallet, if enough people feel the same way then prices will come down. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I didnt mean to whine, I just thought the price was really high for a somewhat simpler locomotive design

Troll or even worse rivet counter
I’m sorry I’m not a toll or rivet counter but I feel given the modern technology shureley we should do better
@@MACK_3D Sorry but that is the way it came across. The standard of Locomotives that Hornby are producing now in RTR form is the very highest.
