    If you read the instructions for the Christy's, you need to go back and repaint the first fitting you did before fitting.
    Thats probably why you had the leak, which they also mention is the primary reason they instruct you to go back and repaint the first part. Agree with another poster, cut the length down to 6", and try using the Christy's With and WithOut the primer.
    After all, thats supposedly the benefit of the Christy's.

      electronicsNmore Primer has been shown over and over again on tests run by standards organizations to weaken glue joints. Primer is a solvent, it reduces the cross sectional area at the joint. Its main purpose is to clean contaminates and to soften/break down the PVC and accelerate the reaction with the PVC glue. The more primer is applied and the longer it is left on the pipe before completing the connection the weaker the joint will be. The strongest joints are produced on clean pipes, glue only, no primer. That being said, primer only marginally weakens the joint

    I just went to Christy's offical website and primer and or cleaner is not required per manufacturer however it does state unless required by local building codes and as far as using the Oakley primer Oakley states that the primer should be sticky but not wet so I have to agree with the others the test wasn't done as you stated per manufacturer but in your defense your connections didn't fail before the pipe. Although after say real world lifespan of say 5-10 years of temperature change and soil or pressure changes I'm sure that your connections would fail

  • @seanile
    @seanile 3 года назад +1

    Excellent elimination of variables. Don't know if anyone has already said this, but here's an idea. the longer something is, the more likely it will fail based on the "Only as strong as its weakest link" effect. To draw on a parallel, When testing rope, it's well known that the longer a rope is, the less weight it can hold before breaking. I wonder what the results would be if you used a length of pipe that was exactly long enough so that both fittings actually touched each other. If the goal is to see which solvent is stronger, it might have better results toward that goal. Another thought, and you would know better than I since you've been doing plumbing for a while and I'm just a DIYer, but is it possible to do this same test with schedule 80 pipe. I've never seen it sold at Home Depot or Lowes and don't know much about it other than it's for commercial use and much stronger than schedule 40. Thanks for an awesome video.

    • @electronicsNmore

      @@electronicsNmore The view count seems to be on par or higher than average compared to the rest of your videos. The feedback, however, is very low. I enjoyed your video because of the the scientific approach and the professional way it was presented, but ultimately it didn't satisfy the reason I clicked on the video in the first place. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to know that pretty much any solvent I choose will be stronger than the pipe itself. But what I really wanted to know is what solvent is the best. Most people would search for videos like this one because of the wide variety to choose from at the hardware store. I suspect that if the test conditions you implemented actually provided the results to rank the solvents from strongest to weakest it would get much higher exposure. But if you do rerun the test with a stronger or shorter pipe, I would be very careful of the shrapnel if it were to explode before the solvent failed. I hope you reconsider making a new video. If you do, I would be sure to mention the pressure rating of the pipe when you apply pressure to it and compare the failure pressure to the average water pressure for a residential area. Besides, a cool explosion would generate the "Oh Wow" factor needed to generate shares, instead of the "Oh, that's nice to know" factor it currently generates.

Same principal for tire pressure, the larger ones would be destroyed at the pressure some bicycle tires use. We have some equipment that requires flexible ss tubing with a working pressure of 3000 psi and the tubing is 1/16" ID. I have two issues with you're testing. First you set the tubing down on the board after applying the primer, which could have removed more or less primer on a particular tube then another. 2nd, you used an Qatley primer, with a Christy product. I would have liked to see you use a Christy primer with their own product. And I don't think a primer is required with red hot blue?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  3 года назад

      Hi there. As for setting down the tubing on a clean surface, not an issue. If you look up the MSDS for Oatey and Christy's purple primer, you'll see the exact same chemicals are used in varying ratios. The results wouldn't be much different than you saw in this video. Thanks for watching

    I never EVER waist my time with the Primer. Just a money sponge. You simply don't need the stuff. They have everyone thinking it's required. Well it's NOT. A quick rub with 260 grit sand paper cleans and preps the joints more then fine. If you feel you need to clean the materials more, use cheap azz Acetone. The sand paper rub works magic. Hell in a Pinch I've used nothing but Acetone alone . I have water pipes 30 years old still working here I did that with. Well pressure 45lb . NO ISSUES. NO LEAKS!
