I have a bit of a story to tell that happened to me being a member of the LDS faith. I live in North Carolina now, but it hasn't always been where I lived. I converted to the LDS faith back in 1973. But working now in NC, which has a Baptist base, I rarely get a negative reaction from my neighbors. Except once. I was taking care of a child who was comatose. The parents were Baptist. They mentioned how their church helped them. I never said anything negative concerning their religion but said I that's why love my faith because of how we help others, and in the discussion, I told them I was LDS. The next day, my supervisor called me to let me know the family requested that I don't return. I had taken care of the child for over a year. So I went to talk to my supervisor and was told that they accused me of practicing witchcraft in their home. I was flabbergasted, to say the least. About six months later I ran into the mother of that child in a store, and she apologized profusely about what happened and I told her, I had forgiven her and her family back when I was let go. We both cried and hugged. It turned out her child had passed and she wanted me to attend the funeral service. I told her I would be honored to be there. To this day I know the mother was under alot of stress, and I wasn't surprised at her initial reaction. She loved her child and wanted the best for that child. And I know that many people have negative feelings towards the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I love the church, its people, the leaders, and the Gospel. They strengthen and guide me through these troubling times.

I have a story about Brigham Young. Brigham Young stole Zina Diantha Huntington, a wife and mother, from her husband and children. He knocked her up and had a baby with her, destroying the family. Zina was tricked into adultery, she was a married woman with children, who Brigham tricked into sleeping with her. Not to mention Brigham Young marrying 15 year old Clarissa Decker and sleeping with her. Don't get me started on Joseph Smith. May I kindly recomend The CES Letter, The Mormon church's gospel topic essays, Grant Palmer's 'Insider's View to Mormon Origins.," or 'Letter for my Wife'. Trust me, Linda, when I say Mormons know nothing of their founders and their religion.

I am Catholic who knows no LDS members, but as someone who general pays attention to politics, especially pop politics (i.e. tv/film), I have too noticed the rising trend of targeting the Mormon faith. From that ex-Mormon documentary to that Hulu min-series, and the most recent BYU controversies relating to race there's probably some sort of active demonization on the part of the tv/film industry and more left leaning students. Frankly, being critical of Mormonism is the trend. Today Mormonism tomorrow who knows what religion will be pointed and sneered at.

How do you know their hasn't been a flood of concerned faithful members? Have you some information that the rest of us has no awareness of? S ome international poll of our 16 million members or a representative sampling? As for the name of the church it denotes our belief that it is led and founded by Christ. Allowing a nickname to be used detracts from our mission. This has been an ongoing effort for the last ten years. The name "Mormon" was originally used as a slur by people who drove LDS people out of their state because of growing political clout and our opposition to slavery. With all the talk about personal pronouns I would think you would be more tolerant. You make a false assumption that we care more about our nickname than the safety of our membership. You are using fallacies to push your agenda and it shows. As a former scout master we were always to practice "2 deep leadership" meaning that no leader was ever alone with any scout, another must always be present. That has been the case for 20 years. As a ministering brother I am never to enter the home of a single woman without a second being present. That has been the case for my 67 years in the church.

I think in relation to what the church owns, what they give is actually not that much. I'd like to see how they come up with their numbers. Truth is that we have no idea how the church, for example, came up with giving 900M over the past year. Are they counting the volunteer hours and giving a dollar amount to that? If they do, that isn't the church giving, that is the individual. (I guess those people could subtract that from their tithes and offering...) There is just no transparency in what these "wonderful" things are. Why doesn't the church open a soup kitchen or a woman's shelter? Digging wells, and making Days For Girls pads, are wonderful, but it is still people doing the work and donating the supplies, not the church. Exact transparency would be great.

It boggled my mind how most members treated those who were outsiders, either because they were not LDS or they were from the “mission field” like me. Without realizing it, and without really wanting to be judgmental because the church gives us all of these criteria to stay on the covenant path, members have all of these outward clues to judge if others are worthy or not. They have always felt victimized and the martyr as well, making them feel like they are above those who are calling them out on their own negative behavior. I would hope people respect others as human beings first, regardless of faith they grew up in. But if you choose to portray the negative stereotypes associated with any brand, be it a team, employer, church, culture, then that is respected differently. The issue seems to come from the disparity between inherent culture and elective brand. Every culture seems to come with one but important to not confuse the two in terms of treatment. If one is playing attitudes from the brand, then it's a brand reaction and it shouldn't be disrespect towards the culture. It's really just treating people as individuals, defaulting respect and not assuming too much by their cultural identity. By the same token, you might also get favorable treatment for playing the positive aspects, depending on the values shared.

I don’t see how you can condemn someone like Warren Jeffs who married teenage girls and not condemn the early Mormon prophets who married teenage girls (Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Lorenzo Snow, Wilford Woodruff, etc.)

Asked below - " ... is it ok to insult Catholics , Christians and Muslims like that ? ..."
      My answer -
      No , ONLY Mormons .
I remember once , in a work conversation among some rougher but DECENT types , where a person in the group was being castigated for his faith because he was "Christian" .
Being a devout Christian _myself_ I added factual basis in science , history and Scripture where appropriate , and where my Christian friend was often overwhelmed .
THEN when asked about _MY_ faith , and sharing that I was LDS , the ENTIRE _ROOM_ turned on *me* _including_ my "Christian" friend who I had for the best part of an HOUR been supporting in his defense of _his_ faith !
      So-
No , Its OK to castigate MORMONS - its NOT ok to insult the "Religions" FAVORED by The World -

We should make sure to separate personal attacks on members of the church and genuine criticism of the church as an organization. Someone pointing out how the Book of Mormon is not historical, the history of polygamy is authoritative, sexist, and harmful to women and girls, that racism in the church was taught by prophets and apostles, or the current discrimination against LGBT folks is not the same as someone who just says “F*ck the Mormons”. Also, as a former member, the term “Mormon” is not derogatory. Seeing as the church itself promoted the “I am a Mormon” campaign as well as the “Meet the Mormons” movie.

It was a term that was meant to be derogatory and as a mockery to those who practiced in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The members adopted the nickname as a way to use it against the persecutors. The name has always been and always will be The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It has been encouraged in the past that members separate themselves from calling themselves “Mormons” for that is not who we worship and that is not the name of our Church. The members developed a bad habit of adopting a name that was never ours to take claim of. We are not followers of Mormon. We are followers in Christ.

I'm an ex-mormon (left a year ago). The members are leaving in droves, because their religious leaders lie to them, and there is a lot of toxic and harmful teachings within the church. They also lie about the number of members they have, they count the non active members (who haven't gone to church in many years) and they count people like me who have left, but haven't removed their name from church records (one day I will). The reason the church has been all over the place, is because those who have left are talking more. We are talking about the abuse and manipulation that happens in the church. Some people love it, some don’t care for it, some hate it, some respect it, etc. Thing is, everyone has their own unique experiences with it and can base their opinion of it. I feel sad to see people saying “f*** the Mormons” but there’s nothing we can do about it except allow people to feel that way towards the church, and defend what we believe; vise-versa for people who differ in beliefs.
I believe in a world of peace of coexisting with belief differences. I don’t think it’s possible however, I want to be the first that makes a step towards that direction. Hopefully, it’ll spread to those around me or at least they can feel peace in being themselves while with me and we both don’t have to sacrifice our beliefs for the sake of coexistence. It's arrogant, egotistical, and inconsiderate not to mention unrealistic. When you measure by cult characteristics, TCOJCOLDSism is 75% cult. 75% of LDS drop out of the faith, most mildly damaged by it, many severely. The poll found that something like 56% of the people in Utah think that the church is unfairly persecuted. Consider however that roughly 60% of the people in Utah identify as being Mormon. That means that it's plausible that 90% of the Mormons feel like they're being persecuted, which honestly is nothing new. They've felt like that since the 1830s. Sometimes it was true, and other times they were facilitating crime (3 counterfeiting operations in Nauvoo) or doing other illegal activities (such as polygamy) which informed the ill treatment which they received at the hand of government and some of their neighbors. In Missouri at least the Saints were also guilty of harassing their neighbors at times, something which Sunday school lessons generally overlook.

@B H lots of things. Even some members don’t even like living where the church membership is great. But a lot of it is that members of the church like to stick together and that can make others feel left out. But this similar to many religions and cultures. Where I live there are a lot of Russians and I have heard comments from non-Russians complaining about them. Usually because they had a few bad experiences and therefore don’t like Russians. Also, if people leave the church they can sometimes leave with a vengeance and that never goes well. Instead of leaving the highly populated member area they stay and be angry towards the church. Idk. There is just so many layers to it. But ultimately comes down to human nature.

No thanks. The families, the kids, the schools are exclusionary to outsiders. If you don’t believe like they do, they will let you know.

It would be helpful if the World Council of Churches would recognize our church as a Christian denomination. But they think The Book of Mormon is blasphemy, so I doubt that will ever happen.

....never gonna happen! Here and there you get an individual who is actually sane enough to recognize that we are christian, but to expect that group to give us any such recognition is a bit ingenuous.... just isn't likely to happen

Thankfully religion is on the decline. Just check out Europe, for example.
