one of the best synth demos I've seen. so hard to find simplistic demonstrations on RUclips. Really really nice, I like the format and ~15 minutes is a good length. Liked the little jam at the beginning/end too! I'd really like if you were to do a tutorial on your workflow, how you go from an idea to a complete track with a few synths (like in your MJM!)
Also worth mentioning that the tie function can make longer chords/notes in a seq. Joining two 16th into an 8th note. Great little full featured controller
littleBIGsynths Cool that’s good to hear. I’m torn. I go back and forth between wanting a BeatStep now, or save my money for a BeatStepPro, or just go with the Keystep which has an arpeggiator. Can’t decide and don’t have room for more than one, and I already have a keyboard controller so the BS feels like an alternate. On the other hand having proper keys is a big plus for sequencing. Agh. Was perfect, I learnt quite a bit and you explain very clear. Only thing was the little switches on the back wasn't mentioned, I swear the graphic is backwards but fiddle till it works ha. Also are you getting feedback or display of the specific tempo somehow?
+Iesope Thank you very much! :) I am glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I didn't even think about the dip switches on the back. :/ I have both switches set to the bottom position (internal) which means the Keystep is the Master clock. As far as the tempo goes... I don't have any way of knowing the exact tempo... unless I hook my gear up to my Electribe, which does display the tempo (BPM).
+TheChristianherud Thank you! :) Unfortunately, the VBass is Monophonic synth... so it is limited to only 1 note at a time. The vKeys and vFM are capable of sequencing chords, just not the vBass.
littleBIGsynths that was fast - thx. Thought I've seen a Video of someone sequencing chords on the bass. Guess he used one vco for each note and sequenced them individually
+TheChristianherud No problem. :) Always happy to try and answer questions. Yeah, it could be possible by sequencing each individual oscillator... but it would probably be limited.
Brilliant tutorial. Love it. Need to grab a keystep. The patch is really, really nice too. Doesn't sound like a preset. Are the sliders matching? Would love to try it out.
+Adam Griffiths Thank you very much :) I definitely reccomend the Keystep, it's a great tool. The patch is #44, just adjust the sustain to max and play with the release time. Oh, and of course add a bit of reverb ;) lol
Outstanding video. Thanks. Glad to have subscribed . . . would love more tutorials, maybe a piece or two about how you develop a musical idea in one of your hardware sessions. How can I sequence my boutique from the keystep, but bypass the sync? I have audio and clock via usb to my mixer, so I only need to sequence it but still get it’s clock as it already is.
Crazy question: I have the keystep 37 now, can I use it to control my korg monologue, and then connect my po-12 to my 37 for drum beats? I know, goofy question 'cause the monologue has a keyboard, I just wanted to ask. Thanks.
Hi!Very usefull video. I've a question. I've just bought an artruria keystep but it seems that doesn't work with my volca keys. I just want to know how i have to put the four synchronization options in the rear panel. Thank you so much
Thank you! Glad you found it useful. 🙂 Are you trying control the vKeys via MIDI? Just set both dip switches to the bottom position. This will set the Keystep as the Master clock. From there, you will need to match the Keysteps MIDI channel to the Volca Keys channel. So if the Volca Keys is set to channel 1, then set the keystep to channel 1. It should work after that. Hope this makes sense. 🙂
@@littleBIGsynths All right the volca works well with the keystep. Now I have a trouble with my PO12 : it seems to have 32 step when it's sync with the keystep (for example it goes throw all the 16 step and after that it goes to other 16 step in silence). how can I solve this problem? Thanks for the video! The keystep is too cool, probably my next purchase for sure :P - question is it possible to tie the quarter notes into a whole note with the tie button?

Really dig your videos! Question: I've tried to sync my keystep to my PO's without success, the problem being that the keystep doesn't send 2ppq which the po:s need. How did you sync it on the video? Thx
+malaxlimpan Thank you very much! :) You should be able to change the sync settings inside the Keystep editor software. There are a few different options for sync signal. ;) Check that out.
Thanks, I tried that before and I didn't realize the "korg" sync mode actually works. You just have to make sure to set the PO:s sync mode to the correct one. (In case anyone else is wondering how to sync them)
Excellent observations.🙂 The PO12 output is going to my audio mixer. The USB from the Keystep is used for power. It can be powered either by a dedicated power supply or a USB cable connected to pretty much any power source that has USB. Very handy. Mine is hooked up to a cell phone charger in this video, but you can even hook it up to a portable battery pack (the ones used for cell phones.) 👍
I’ve got a ju-06, a Keystep and RK-002..would you know how to get arpeggios to work?? I’m new to all of this gear (I’m a brass n bass player that used to mess with cheapo keyboards back in the day) and never learned serious gear...and wanted to dive in but got a bit over my head
+cyrill a. The JU-06 is a 4 voice polyphonic synth! :D It is miniaturized recreation of the vintage, Roland Juno 106. You can definitely get some nice, rich sounds out of this little synth. ;)
+D Londono :( I got rid of it to find other gear... I do miss it though. It was a great synth. I had to decide between the JU-06 and JP-08 and ended up keeping the JU06. The Ju06 is a bit more "lush" sounding and very straight forward when it came to programming patches. The JP08 had a lot more features, but sometimes sounded a bit harsh and harder to find a "sweet spot." It's all a matter of preference really... and if I could afford all of the gear I wanted without having to sell anything... I would definitely have held on to it. :/ lol
+DrSurfreak :) So you want to have another device as the master clock? Instead of the Keystep? If so, you just need to change the settings on the back of the Keystep. There is a pair of switches to change the Keystep from master to slave.
I've tried.. ableton live as a master... I've set the back pin to midi and this isnt the problem... but How manual says "The sequencer will not run if the sync selection switches are set to something other than Internal and no external clock is present." HAve you ever tried? Thanks
HI ! thank you for this tutorial. Every time I press play on my keystep, the sequencer of my ju06 start too, in the same time of my keystep sequencer. I pres on manual in juno 06 for stop it, but every time I restart on the keystep, the sequencer JU06 restart ... Thanks for your help !
The only work around I've found for this is to: Create and use an empty sequence when sequencing with the Keystep. I had the same issue for awhile, but this works for me. Hopefully this will work for you as well. :)
ok, I just did it. It's interesting to work too, with the two sequencer ju06 and keystep together, the two are well synchronized. I just begin with boutique and keystep..
Hey I really love that PO-12 case... was that a DIY? If so, do you mind sharing the plans? Some buttons on my PO-12 are becoming less and less responsive... :( EDIT: Also do you mind letting me know how you got the PO-12 to respond to hitting "play" on your Keystep? I've always had to time the play button myself.
*clicks link* WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY WALLET!? Thank you for taking the time to respond. I don't have the Keystep yet - but it's probably a matter of time. SO much functionality for such a cheap price.
You are really fueling my GAS you know? Looking for used Keysteps... such incredible value arggg to think I've spent way more money on way less functionality.
Press Shift, and button Kbd (for keyboard play) to play over sequence... but it depends on how many voices synth has... if it only has 4voices like this Ju-06 then you need to record it onto something else to be able to chords over them...
+UncleJimima Hey! :) So, the gate time was initially set for demonstration purposes mostly. With the short gate time, you can get short sounding chords that you could hear being played along with the kick drum.
littleBIGsynths thanks for the reply! I soon found that out after experimenting with my equipment. I come from the world of stringed instruments, but just became obsessed with this "little big synths" world, so I'm still pretty new to all this, but I'm learnin'... slowly...
John Oakes 14 minutes ago How does someone with no experience get the Arturia keystep to work in Windows 10....Not a single video on youtube to show how this installs and works in windows. Right now I have a $118 paper weight. The users manual is useless unless your an experienced user. I just want to make some noise...Why things have to be so difficult? This should be plug and play or step by step instructions on getting this to work in windows....Any help or a video on the subject would be helpful....thanks in advance.
you stepped in the wrong puddle if you want plug and play... lol. this is the world of synths not videos games. this keystep will plug into a midi synth and play immediately... you need software to make a sound and and education to know what you want to do... you sound like a whiney child that wants to drive daddy's car making a comment like plug and play. get a clue and some patience.
+louis stussi Yes! Haha and your just now watching it? :D haha Haha offbeat? I'm guessing you would just have to incorporate some rests in the sequences..? Lol
I did not see when you show how to add length to a note, to have a note that hold for a quantity of step: if you don't know, create a sequence hold a note then tap rest !!!
I ever understood this until now , learnt more in5 minutes than I have in 5 months..your bloody good at this..

can you do a video like this for the Volca Keys?
+Mac Joseph Yeah, I'm sure I can. I have a list of videos I would like to make ... I will add this idea to the list ;)
littleBIGsynths wow!! Your awesome!!
Can you do a tutorial on hooking up a Volca with a Keystep Arturia?
The ju-06 is polyphonic? Didnt know that, if it really is it will probably be my next piece if gear
+cyrill a. The JU-06 is a 4 voice polyphonic synth! :D It is miniaturized recreation of the vintage, Roland Juno 106. You can definitely get some nice, rich sounds out of this little synth. ;)
Why dont you have the jp-08 any more? do you like ju-06 better?
+D Londono :( I got rid of it to find other gear... I do miss it though. It was a great synth. I had to decide between the JU-06 and JP-08 and ended up keeping the JU06. The Ju06 is a bit more "lush" sounding and very straight forward when it came to programming patches. The JP08 had a lot more features, but sometimes sounded a bit harsh and harder to find a "sweet spot." It's all a matter of preference really... and if I could afford all of the gear I wanted without having to sell anything... I would definitely have held on to it. :/ lol
Great video! Could I use Arturia MInilab with ju- 06? without laptop?
of course. Why not. Just plug in a midi cable
Thank you for sharing this... but how to play seq when in EXternal clock? Is it possible ?
+DrSurfreak :) So you want to have another device as the master clock? Instead of the Keystep? If so, you just need to change the settings on the back of the Keystep. There is a pair of switches to change the Keystep from master to slave.
I've tried.. ableton live as a master... I've set the back pin to midi and this isnt the problem... but How manual says "The sequencer will not run if the sync selection switches are set to something other
than Internal and no external clock is present." HAve you ever tried? Thanks
+DrSurfreak so are you sending MIDI over USB or through a MIDI cable?
tried both.. Keystep starts when Live starts but seems that I can't record a sequence
HI ! thank you for this tutorial.
EDIT: Also do you mind letting me know how you got the PO-12 to respond to hitting "play" on your Keystep? I've always had to time the play button myself.
+Austin Brubaker Hey! Thanks :) The case was actually made my a company called >> dichstudios.com
*clicks link* WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY WALLET!? Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I don't have the Keystep yet - but it's probably a matter of time. SO much functionality for such a cheap price.
+Austin Brubaker hahaha No problem! :)
and yes... the Keystep is a great value! Do it. Lol
You are really fueling my GAS you know? Looking for used Keysteps... such incredible value arggg to think I've spent way more money on way less functionality.
Great vid! Thanks!
+Noisy Batt Thank you very much! :D
Thank you! Can you on top of that play chords live?
Press Shift, and button Kbd (for keyboard play) to play over sequence... but it depends on how many voices synth has... if it only has 4voices like this Ju-06 then you need to record it onto something else to be able to chords over them...
Usefull and informativ! Good job ;)
Thank you! Glad you found it useful. 😁👍
Hi dude, i'm interessted by your Pocket Operator case, how did u get that ? :
It was made by a company called Dich studios. www.dichstudios.com Really great PO products. Go check em' out! 👍
littleBIGsynths wow ! Those stuff r crazy, thx bru
Thank you.
good stuff
+Shed Thank you! :)
when I click to "play" on the keystep, then automatically starts sequencer on my jp-08, and they play at the same time((
Sorry, I should just clean the arp on the synthesizer so that it plays empty arpeggios?
@@datdarkcraydatdarkcray5627 i set pattern one on my to be saved as being blank/empty.
@@lazy_dad right.. I realized it later. Keep it empty always)
Why do you set the gate time to 25%?
+UncleJimima Hey! :) So, the gate time was initially set for demonstration purposes mostly. With the short gate time, you can get short sounding chords that you could hear being played along with the kick drum.
littleBIGsynths thanks for the reply! I soon found that out after experimenting with my equipment. I come from the world of stringed instruments, but just became obsessed with this "little big synths" world, so I'm still pretty new to all this, but I'm learnin'... slowly...
If gate time is at the highest, 90%, do the notes get tied?
merci pour ton tuto tank you
+electro volca korg Thank you for watching! :)
muy bueno
+nicolas mars Muchas gracias, amigo! ;)

How does someone with no experience get the Arturia keystep to work in Windows 10....Not a single video on youtube to show how this installs and works in windows. Right now I have a $118 paper weight. The users manual is useless unless your an experienced user. I just want to make some noise...Why things have to be so difficult? This should be plug and play or step by step instructions on getting this to work in windows....Any help or a video on the subject would be helpful....thanks in advance.
you stepped in the wrong puddle if you want plug and play... lol. this is the world of synths not videos games. this keystep will plug into a midi synth and play immediately... you need software to make a sound and and education to know what you want to do... you sound like a whiney child that wants to drive daddy's car making a comment like plug and play. get a clue and some patience.
nice vid
+sprunging for voltage Thank you! :)
it was me who asked you for this vid haha, but where are the off beat ?
+louis stussi Yes! Haha and your just now watching it? :D haha Haha offbeat? I'm guessing you would just have to incorporate some rests in the sequences..? Lol
littleBIGsynths yes ^^ , offbeat not just in the same time with the kick, for exemple. the kick (1-5-9-13) and the «offbeat» (4-8-10..(exemple))
+louis stussi oh yeah, definitely! Just use "rests". I used the Kick drum to make it easier to understand. Lol
littleBIGsynths ok thanks but the rest button is quantized ? or i can change the quantise of the rest button ?
Someone teach this guy tie lol
I did not see when you show how to add length to a note, to have a note that hold for a quantity of step: if you don't know, create a sequence hold a note then tap rest !!!
by the way great video, gratitude!
When are you gonna start buying modules dude? For Cereal...
Great tutorial thank you.
