This video is very helpful, in the past I have found it difficult to understand son/contratiempo, let alone dancing. Also, most of the time in the lessons there is not so much time to explain things in detail. Thank you for the explanation & examples.
Really appreciate these videos, thanks for those!!! I was particularly enticed by the rumba to contratiempo teaser. Would love to know what are your tips and tricks to switch between tiempo and contratiempo (and back). Be it forward/backward basic, lateral son steps, rumba. And in your experience, how leadable are those switches (as opposed to dancing alone)?
Very lead-able and follow-able! Would recommend with a follow who has some experience or at least does not feel like she's in her head/anxious/overthinking thr dance, because it is a bit out of convention of what a new follow is used to. Will do exactly this next stream!
@@MessinaDance Cool that you'll be streaming about tiempo/contratiempo! More of an observation than a question, I've noticed that some teachers have certain preferences when switching/dancing to contratiempo. Like stepping on the left foot on the 8th count (never the right foot). Or stepping on the left foot on the 3rd note of the tresillo (3 part) part of the clave, meaning this could be on the 4th or 8th count (depending on the clave orientation). IMHO I try to be as flexible as possible and train different variations…
Quick answer would be that it is best to look at them differently. Some sisters who danced back in the day at the palladium in ny used to dance very much 2 3 4... 6 7 8 when I watched them, line folks tend to have a very flexible definition of "1" (and "5") where it can wind up anywhere between 8, 8.5, to 1 (or 4, 4.5, to 5) Contratiempo is 100% 2, 3, 4... 6, 7, 8
Very clear and easy to understand.
I hope you can reach many people, because this is really useful.
And it really does feel like a cheatcode hehe
well not easy per se, but getting an actual song to see and hear the instruments really helps so much
I like how you know that you’re talking to dance teachers. ❤
Anyone who sought out this topic would likely be capable of teaching, even if not holding formal classes, so... one way or the other 🙌
Awesome musicality lesson . Thank you !
I appreciate the support, buddy 🙏
