    MATERIALS:
    PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
    Arches 140lb Cold Press Paper for this Video.
    My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
    For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
    MY PALETTE: All tube paints! Only Ultramarine and Sepia for this painting.
    Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
    DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
    A note on Davy's Gray: I rarely use this pigment straight and when using it I usually mix it with each colour used.
    PAINT PALETTE::
    The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
    BRUSH: A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush
    REFERENCE IDEA: came from my imagination/memory.

    I have always considered painting with watercolour to be an act of magic. After a long threatening illness I decided what the hell, nothing to loose.....brilliant, now I am a magician. Thank you Peter for making my life so much richer.

    Very nice, with the treetops giving it a wonderful atmospheric perspective at the end. Not a paper tissue in sight!

    I just painted a greeting card from your lesson. It turned out to be beautiful. I will be sending it to a friend who fell off a mountain in Tennessee. I hope it isn't too close to what happened to him! My husband says he won't look at it that way! I plan to say, "We are looking for blue skies to come your way!)

      i tried making this art and it turned out to be beautiful,the only prolem was when i took off the tape ,it tore my painting.....:(

    • @ladyshadow79
      @ladyshadow79 6 лет назад +13

      Amit Kumar Try sticking the tape to your clothing or a piece of cloth furniture first, before taping your paper. This helps reduce some of the adhesive of the tape and reduces the chances of it tearing your art work. Hope this helps!

    Excellent demonstration!! Painting convincing skies with clouds can be a vexing proposition for beginners and experienced painters alike. You perfectly illustrate your point making it easy to follow and learn. Plus, by adding the trees for perspective... you turn a practice exercise into a finished painting. (Maybe not for you, but for the beginner a completed work of art) Thanks, as always, for sharing your time and talents... Love your work and these videos!! :D

    Peter, I was following your thought process/ instinct until the ultramarine hit the paper. Then I thought "oh no, he ruined it"! But you obviously knew what you were doing, and once the water did what you knew it would, bam! Beautiful! And the tree tops at the end were the misery shot, lol! Just simple and gorgeous - thanks for the quick demo - it made me want to go try paint different skies!

    Hi @PeterSheelerart, I really want to learn how to paint skies like you do. I have completed many of your paintings and I love them all. Thank you for all of your dedicated time. I would love to support you somehow. I would love to have a Peter Sheeler painting on my wall. Is it possible to purchase one? Another question, I am having difficulty removing the paint after it is on my paper (for the cloud in the bottom right). I'm not using Arches, but Baohong Cold Press Paper. What magic do you use to do this? Is your brush extra wet or dry? I guess I could try to use my Kolinsky Sable as it grabs paint like no ones business. I have painted this twice now and it's a little better, but still not great. Thank you for any help and again thank you for all of your wonderful drawings. Like Grandmabarby, I feel "you never fail to delight me in your ability to make ME an artist!". I didn't know I had it in me, 52 years I waited. Now I'm having a blast. Have a nice day.

    Do you "stretch" the watercolor paper? I find that my paper gets curves in it

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  6 лет назад +1

      I never stretch my paper. I use 140lb paper so it's fairly thick. I used to sell limited edition prints and the only noticeable difference in the two was the buckled paper of the original. I just consider wrinkles part of watercolor art.

    Hi, instead of the sepia that you mixed with the ultramarine blue... is it possible to use Payne's gray? Or neutral tint? I'm just starting and not exactly clear on which "greys" will work best with ultramarine blue for the shadows in the clouds... likewise... could I dilute ivory black to a light enough color to supplement for the sepia? Thank you!

    A great painting. Clouds and skies can be difficult for beginners like me. The trees look great. The more I watch you the more I learn from you. i like the technique you use to paint trees. What colors did you mix for the trees? Dana

    I really want to make a cloud painting for my dear friend whose middle name is “awan” which literally means cloud as a farewell gift because i’m moving soon. I will try this tutorial, wish me luck :)

    Hi Peter...
    You list ultramarine as a color. I'm assuming this is Ultramarine Blue from Windsor Newton?
    You are very talented. Many thanks for sharing.
