Charles Mclean ...Jacques Dominique Wilkins really won that Slam Dunk Competition in 1988, and Michael Jeffrey Jordan knew it. Julius Winfield "Dr. J" pointed to the foul line, and rest is history. The judges gave Jordan the trophy. The 1988 NBA All-Star game was also in the Windy City.

I wish players today would develop a solid mid range game along with the 3 point shot.. too many games where the 3 point shot isn't falling and the game turns into a brick fest.
That's what I like about the Suns.Thry have a lot of players who prefer the mid range game.Like Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and Mikal Bridges.Best record in the league without having to spam the 3pt line.

Watching Jordan back when I was in High School, I always had feeling of excitement and anticipation because you just never new when he would make yet another amazing shot, but you probably weren't going to have to wait long. Haven't felt like that watching any other player .
It’s always amazing to me how many people believe that the love Michael Jordan receives is because of his “legend” and not his actual skill. But listen to how the announcers speak about Jordan. Listen to how they analyze his game and how impressed they are with how he dominates the game in every aspect. This was in his 3rd season, before there was any “legend”. The man was AMAZING to watch in the moment. The “legend” of Michael came later and was well deserved. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player I’ve ever seen.

Every superstars are unique, MJ was just the best of his era, and i think he was lucky Magic had HIV and had to stop his career in 90, and Bird had back injuries … The MVP’S of that era, except Olajuwon would all barelly be Top 10 todays, David Robinson, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone, with the Dream they are the 4 players to win an MVP in the 90´s, and right now, this season Giannis, Jokic, Embiid, Lebron, KD are all better than them, and Ja, Doncic, Tatum aren’t far, and if Kawhi, AD, Kyrie weren’t injured/not vaccinated, i think you could argue that they would be close.

Preach!!! Nothing drove me crazier then watching James Harden in Houston dribble through the legs for 15 seconds straight, then hurl up a three. Then youngins compare him to Jordan because of his numbers, but Jordan scored with way less effort really because of what you said, plus he moved without the ball. He played his part in a precise offense (Prime Bulls yrs) that had everyone touch the ball unless it was a fast break or immediate opening.

Growing up watching MJ….I never really understood the greatness I was watching at the time. He was just being His Airness. Only now, looking back, can I truly grasp how good he really was. Same with Larry Legend.
We've seen a lot of great basketball since the Jordan era. I can honestly say that I have never felt that level of dominance since.

I noticed how MJ avoided the charge with the lightning-quick change of direction when magic beat him to the spot and he contorted his body to the right after taking flight….that was unbelievable !!!
This was the year after jordan won the MVP, DPOY and scoring title in the same year. MJ was by far the best player in the league at this point.

I've seen people try to argue that Jordan had a really good team around him at this time. I mean Paxson and Hodges could be good in stretches from 3 but other than that the entire team was useless. Pippen eventually got there but even Grant was VASTLY over-rated and the minute he tried playing for another team he was exposed as just another part time player. And he was the 3rd best player on that team!

@@REXX399 feel free to name me Horace Grant's numbers in his first two seasons with the Bulls and all his seasons on other teams. He was a decent defensive player but Joakim Noah was way better and no one would accuse him of being the third piece for a three-peat championship team.
Grant was good enough to get by with great teammates. The team without Jordan was nowhere near as good as with him but adding kukoc along with a couple good role players made them just good enough to be a playoff team without Jordan. It's not debatable, Grant had his shot in his prime when he moved to a different team and look at all he accomplished.... 🙄
@@SDesWriter Joakim was not way better he was a little worst! Grant avg 7pts his 1st season and 12 the second. It took Joakim 6 seasons before he avg 11 points. Grant was almost as good as a defender and ran the floor and finished much better. He also helped eliminate the bulls when he played in Orlando and won another chip in LA. He avg 12 points in Orlando. Avg 8 in LA. Joakim is all defense. Horace was more versatile.
Who said Jordan weakness is shooting threes? Seeing that form i believe that if he was shooting more threes he should have a higher percentage than whats recorded.
Like everything else in all of sports, practice makes perfect. People who think Michael *couldn't* shoot 3s have no clue how much of a perfectionist he was. His mid-range jumper was actually considered to be his biggest weakness coming out of college and he became the best mid-range shooter of all time, that should tell the people who make false assumptions about his 3pt shooting something

Had an emphasis on the 3 in that era been close to what it is now, Jordan would have easily shot 40+% from outside over multiple seasons .
In his era - and most other eras - only the outside specialist would work on 3s in excess of 15% of total shots taken in practice.
In today's NBA nearly every player is taking 3s in practice 30-40% of the time, and MJ playing today would also be doing so.

1988 Jordan was incomparable. Lakers were the NBA Champs that year, but you could see the pieces start to come together for the Bulls. They were so young.
No this is December 1988 - so the finals were in 1989. Pistons swept the Lakers and Beat the Bulls again and made Jordan cry. [yes literally - before the crying Jordan memes]. Kareem was 42 years old. Lakers were only 57 - and 25 that year also, they lost a ton of road games. Not really Showtime Lakers anymore.

Phil gets too much credit. There were no players on that team. A couple of streaky outside shooters, Pippen when all he could do was defend and dunk, Grant when he was barely able to keep up, an OLD Bill Cartwright.....It was a shitshow of mediocrity.
Doug Collins would have won all the those titles too if they had kept him. Phil is a great coach but all his teams were loaded with talent.

It was literally a circus for three straight years and the only reason it worked was cuz Scotty and MJ were completely on board and telling the coach to give him space until he went too far and then telling Robin he'd messed up. He says it in the documentary then he completely respected both of them so when they came down on him he took it to her but for anybody else he wouldn't.
Individually MJ's greatest years, as Magic, Bird can confirm (and also Isiah should) he was unstoppable. Later his teamplay and the team became All Time Great

There's something that's so aesthetically pleasing about the sounds from the games of this era. The squeaky shoes on hardwood being drowned out by the occasional uproar from the crowd or the organ with its classic melodies instead of today's pop music. The people here were here to be attentive and focused; it hadn't become an instagram location to post on your story. People wanted to be here to witness greatness. I love hearing these sounds.
Kareem was done at this point. He couldn't run the floor or defend. Not that I think it would've mattered much stopping Jordan, but it was sad to see the end of a LEDGEND like that.
he was done, but still useful especially in the playoffs. This was the 88-89 season where he would have horrible stretches during the regular season, but he had game like 25/10 in the finals vs Detroit when Magic went down. It was awesome to see him light the fire one last time.

Two of those colossal teams (Pistons & Celtics) we're in the east so MJ was playing against them on a constant basis. A lot of people say that Mike couldn't beat Isiah or Larry. It wasn't like Larry & Isiah were playing with some scrubs. Those were some stacked teams. Do you think a team is going to win titles with just one star player and a mediocre supporting cast? No, it's not going to happen. Ask Larry who was considered to have the most stacked front court in NBA history in 1986. Oh stuff! The Celtics won the title that year. Don't get me started on the Showtime Lakers who's considered to have the most stacked team in NBA history. Detroit had some H.O.F players too on their team. Ever since MJ came into the league he has been an unstoppable force. So when he got some help just like Isiah, Larry, & Magic had stop discrediting his accomplishments because of the "players got old" b.s. narrative.

In '87 Jordan became the best scorer in the league. In '88 he became the best player in the league. I actually think he arguably became the best player in the league even earlier than that, like at the end of '86 when he dropped 49 and 63 in the playoffs against that loaded '86 Celtic team, the best defensive team in the league that year and one of the top 2 or 3 teams in NBA history. Even in the 3rd game, when the Celtics "shut him down", he was a rebound short of a triple double.

Notice how pippen didn’t yet have the starting role here and was getting limited minutes. MJ looked more aggressive and looked like he had to do more. Pippen would eventually alleviate some of that pressure. But I can’t imagine how crazy Jordan’s individual stats would be if he maintained this kind of aggressiveness for the rest of his career.
I don't think that the Bull's would have won the championships that they did if Pippen hadn't become the star that he did. He was the perfect complement to MJ.
Pippen " didn't yet" have the starting position because he just returned from back surgery and management wasn't yet ready to give up on Brad Sellers( who had been a high pick).
Jordan simply got more efficient and he talks later in his career on how he didn't have to use as much energy.
During these years were he always tried to be a Lone Ranger, he often would pass to bail himself out as the shot clock was expiring. I remember many passes to Bill Cartwright or someone else when they were 20 feet away from the basket and they had to hurl it up or the ball would hit them.

This was the year, that one could see that Kareem wasn't a great player anymore. His ineffectiveness on defensive help was obvious. This, plus MJ being the best player in the NBA overall, made it tough on the Lakers.

Man, I remember this well. This is a Bulls team in transition. Scottie and Horace in their second year. Cartwright in the middle. Oakley gone. Woolridge gone (to this Laker team). Sam Vincent, Brad Sellers, and Dave Corzine still with the team. Doug Collins just handing the ball to Jordan for every possession. It was a fun team, but still no match for Detroit or Boston. Peak physical MJ. I was surprised to see Craig Hodges. I thought he came along later.

This was the last game of a 7 game road trip in 10 days. Also this was the 88-89 season, which was Kareem's last. The Lakers were definitely still a power house having won the title in 87 & 88 and would end up losing in the finals to the Bad Boy Pistons at the end of that year, but they were not the 85 or 87 Showtime Lakers that dominated the NBA. MJ was awesome that season averaging 32.5/8/8 for the season. The Bulls were just starting to knock on the door, and that was the last run of the "Showtime Lakers" they would get to the finals again in 91 vs the Bulls, but with No Kareem and were dubbed "Slowtime" that year.
I was curious too if this was on a back-to-back game. As good as Jordan was, teams weren’t exactly circling the date on their calendar.
Otherwise this would’ve been a Sunday game on CBS and you know the Lakers would’ve gotten up for that

This was MJ at his physical peak. He was scary in 88. The Lakers had won back to back chips but lost to the Pistons. You could see the foundation of the Bulls run in this video. I miss those days at the old Chicago Stadium.

Kareem retired in the 80's and Jordan started in thebmid 80's. The Pistons whipped up on the Bulls in the 80's. Remember the Pistons lost and won a title in 1988 and 1989 respectively

Not really. Phil Jackson came in with a better system. Even Isaiah Thomas said that when Phil Jackson took over, his system created many problems then in prior years.
Management wanted Doug out. He was a good coach, and who knows what might have happened as Pippen and Grant started to mature. But they wanted to roll forward with Phil- they liked his vision and team approach - whereas they viewed Collins as having a one dimensional scheme > pushing too much offense through MJ and being too predictable and easy to game plan against. In some respects it was a gamble to roll the dice on Jackson, at the time.
They wasn't winning titles with Doug Collins. I know Craig Hodges personally (Played for Phil and Doug) and he even said Doug Collins didn't have a offensive system...it was basically give it to MJ and get out the way... It wasn't until Phil came and let Tex Winters install the Triangle Offense that they started winning.
MJ might have 2-3 rings MAX if played under Collins as head coach

Year I just watched the 1982 college final and MJ was so different in the way he played. Worthy was the man on that team and no one would tell from watching that final that MJ would turn out to be this insanely good. Even Worthy said he did not expect MJ to be this good.
And in the Same year L.A. Lakers. Showtime goes to the Finals and wins in game 7 against beating the Detroit "Bad Boy Moter City" Pistons... What a year... Good to be a Laker fan.

The showtime Lakers were from 1982 to 1988. This is the 1989 team, they weren't showtime plus this was Kareem's final year.
This team was good, Magic was the '89 and'90 MVP but they weren't showtime.
