  • You may have heard of lucid dreaming, the type of dream where the dreamer is aware of dreaming. Is lucid dreaming a real phenomenon? Sleep expert Matthew Walker explains how much we know about lucid dreams so far.
Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.

    --------------------------------------------------
Following is the transcript of the video:
Jessica Orwig: What if we could control our dreams?
When most of us dream, our thoughts and actions are involuntary. The dream plays out as if we were watching a movie. But not all dreams are the same. There is another kind of dreaming called lucid dreaming, which is more like playing a video game than watching a movie.
Matthew Walker: By definition lucid dreaming is simply the act of knowing that you're dreaming whilst you're dreaming.
My name is Matthew Walker. I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California Berkeley.
Most people actually think of lucid dreaming more in the sense of actually beginning to control what you're dreaming. So, you gain volitional control and you decide what's going to happen during your dream.
Orwig: Frequent lucid dreamers claim that they can control many parts of the dream such as teleporting themselves to another location, learning to improve real-life skills, or even eating fire. It might sound far-fetched. And until recently we lacked the technology to prove if lucid dreaming was real or not. But a series of recent studies has shed light on the phenomenon.
Walker: Scientists have designed experiments and they’ve been able to demonstrate objectively that when people say that they're doing something in that dream that they actually are.
Orwig: In 2012, scientists reported results from one of the first experiments that objectively measured lucid dreams using fMRI scanners. fMRIs measure the rate of blood flow to different areas of the brain, so they can relay information about a person's thoughts and actions simply through a series of images.
For the study, scientists first asked participants to clench their fists while they were awake. This lit up key areas of the brain on the fMRI scanner. After that, participants were asked to fall asleep and dream about clenching their fists. Sure enough - similar regions of the brain lit up in both cases.
Lucid dreaming comes naturally to some, but many of us have never experienced the sensation. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
Walker: How can we actually become more capable of lucid dreaming? Well, it's a little bit tricky, but you can certainly try to tell yourself that you will remember that you're dreaming whilst you're dreaming before you actually fall asleep. So, try to go through a mantra chant as it were. Some people actually try to do deliberative things whilst sleeping, like turning on the lights in a room. And that helps them to become aware that they are dreaming at the moment of dreaming itself and therefore they gain lucid control.
Orwig: Those who can already control their dreams with ease say lucid dreams aren’t only for entertainment but can also be used to expand one's conscious boundaries.
On the other hand, lucid dreamers have also reported frightening accounts where they have trouble distinguishing reality from the dream. In some cases, this can be a sign of mental illness, and should be taken seriously.
But why do some people have the ability to lucid dream but not others? And what is happening in our subconscious that triggers the experience? There’s still a lot we have to learn about the causes and effects of lucid dreaming.
Walker: It seems to be only around 20 to 30% of the population are actually natural lucid dreamers. So, perhaps if it was so beneficial mother nature would have had all of us being table of lucid dreaming. And the fact that we’re not perhaps means that it's not necessarily beneficial. But we actually don’t know. Maybe those 20 to 30% of people who do lucid dream are at the forefront of hominid evolution, and they are going to be the next species of preference. We just don't know.

It happens a lot with lucid dreamers, our brain doesn't like the fact we are aware that we are dreaming and try to revert this by reiniciating our dream, waking us up or making us unaware again. There was this time when I was having this lucid dream and then a realized my brain made me go back to unaware state in the middle of it.

I had a lucid dream yesterday. It's an unexplainable feeling you get when you realize your dreaming while in the dream because now you don't have to go by the script. When you start exploring your dream world with a woke mind that's when things start getting really interesting.

I was too scared to talk to anybody or do anything because It’s the equivalent of going to a random person in real life and smacking them (as in how it feels just like real life). But then when you wake up it’s just feels like another dream you had except you remember that dream vividly, but it won’t feel real when you wake up. It only feels real in the moment that you’re dreaming

I just had my first lucid dream last night. I had no idea a thing existed! It was…intoxicating.
I knew I was dreaming, and I had full control over everything in my dream, EVERYTHING.
I even woke myself up to prove to myself that I was dreaming and really in my home and in my bed.
As soon as I did, I went back to sleep and continued the experience. I still had full control over EVERYTHING.
It was probably the most surreal experience of my entire life.

I once really wanted to lucid dream, so I embarked on a quest to try it, eventually it worked, so far the only way I've been able to control my dream is I can move by myself and make my own decisions, and I can grow a pair of wings, but that's about it, also my dreams are really weird, I was once chased by a girrafe-parrot-large headed-beaked-monster thing, it could fly, also some of them were short, their body structure was like the ones ducks have

We're trying, but to lucid dream without just being genetically lucky, we got a choice to either ruin our sleep schedule to wake up in the middle of the night, or form a habit of doing a reality check over many months.

Due to the way I’ve currently been living my life, I’ve slowly been loosing my abilities to Lucid dream. Depression, bad eating and sleeping habits along with stress of work and life. I’ve been slowly just “falling asleep, and waking up” not remembering even going to sleep. And sometimes I can still feel my dreams, but can only see glimpses. Whereas when I was a child I had full clear visions and could alter everything. Now I’m almost fighting to survive in a way in my dreams.

This one time i was dreaming, it was as following:-
I am laying in my bed and i am watching the ceiling. All of a sudden i see a shadow (kinda spooky) , don't know what it is, and it slides across from ceiling to wall and back. And iam like hey, its just a dream. No need to be frightened. And then BAM💥 The thing jumps right on my face and i am trying to shout out loud but cannot open my jaw. I am shivering with fear. Walter Antonio Alba An I was experiency lucid dreaming since 10 years, one thing I did a lot in my beginner journey that once I become lucid if I feel that the dreaming is collapsing or ending somehow, I begin to stare at my palms and relax for as long as the dream will become clear again and I continue my lucidity and also if I wanted to extend it for more time I stare at walls and begin to touch them; it is weird but it worked for me everytime (touching everything you see in the dream will make your dream clearer) after years you will not use those as relaxation and meditation will be very beneficial.

Also, if you messed up in the middle of the night and now you are awake, just stay relaxed/calm and think about the last part that happened to your dream, keep thinking about it and you will find yourself back to the dream. Also becareful of oversleeping, you might be enjoying too much you forget to wake up. hahaha enjoy

There are things that will latch themselves on to you and the pipeline that you make to the dream world. They will wait for the opportune moment to make their escape to our reality. You won't know they are here with you until it's too late. This my warning, please be careful. There things about lucid dreaming we dont fully understand yet.

All though after I have these dreams for about a few hours to sometimes a few days these fears are A LOT more prominent and affect me deeply mentally until they eventually fade away such as many other feelings like love.

I had many lucid dreams in the 80s. They were often funny, empowering, and really helpful to me....
and just plain FUN. I discovered early on that there were specific triggers in the dreams that informed me of when i was having one. One trigger was flying ... and in one dream i was hiking in Mexico and asked someone if he wanted to fly with me above the trees. He didnt believe we could do that, so I told him he was a dream character and if I said he could fly, then he could. He kept arguing with me. So i touched his arm and up we went.
I was dealing with a lot of stress in those years and was amazed at how therapeutic they were. 👍🏽

@@s.c4754 To be honest I have never tried any of these techniques, I have had lucid dreams since I was 11 years old (6 years ago), and the first few times you can only be aware of your dreams and it doesn't happen so frequently, it took me 1 year of practice to start to control them, so these methods may be useful but I can't verify it.
In response to how dreams are, yes, they feel quite real, with enough practice you can experience them with all your senses, although it is limited to the brain's perception of these senses, for example, when you fly you feel the speed and the wind in your face, but it isn't exactly what you feel when you fly, but what you think it feels like when you fly, based on memories that you form in real life

I only lucid dream, and I have been astral traveling since the age of 12. Whenever I lucid dream I feel like I’m watching myself from the outside while being in my body at the same time, and I’m always also aware of where my physical body really is In this realm. I’ve always been a little different than most if you will. I’ve been seeing spirits my whole life and didn’t know everyone else couldn’t until I was around 5. When I go to sleep at night I lay flat on my back and mediate into a lucid dream or astral projection. I get up just about every 1-3 hours to reflect on where I just was then back at it again. I never wake up tired either, but many times I don’t feel like I ever even slept. It’s like I just have a vision wake up and repeat. I’ve mastered turning off my thoughts and can fully relax my entire body pretty much instantly. I learned all of this from wanting to be in control of when I astral project and what I experience when I do. Everyone can do it but, just like building muscle you have to work on and strengthen these abilities.

I can easily lucid dream, since I was 6. Playing video games is the key. I can get control of it easily like I can be a different person or at a different place like in a movie where two to three scenes are going together. Also I can change my appearance. And if I read a book before sleeping I dream of the same book and I can be any character. So I change my decision the whole story changes. How cool is that!

The difference is the physical damage sustained in a dream will only effect ur dream body. If you've ever wondered why you wake up after you die in a dream its bc our brains can't comprehend death bc its never actually been through it (idk how this would apply to ppl that have died and been revived)

I have been doing this for years. It stopped for a while, then I went back to it again. I have been lucid dreaming for the last week. I wake up really tired though, like I have not slept at all. I cannot necessarily control what I dream about before going to sleep. However, when I dream (me being a different person), there is context to it. Like I suddenly know who I am, how I feel, what my history is, and then control the narrative of the dream from there. I control what the person in my dream does. My dreams are very vivid too. And if I ever get woken up by the need to pee or something, I go back to sleep and consciously decide to go back into it to finish the dream. This morning, I remember opening my eyes and checking to see if it is morning yet, then I went back to sleep to hurry myself up and finish all loose ends in the dream so I feel like I am not left hanging.
The last two recent lucid dreams, I had the feeling of deja vu. Like I somehow feel the familiarity of the dream as if it is was either an old dream or an old memory while still subconsciously reminding myself that I am dreaming.

Sometimes when I wake up by my alarm I hit snooze and rest my eyes then I get up and I go on with the rest of my day but then I wake an hour later still in my bed laying down and I’ve been late to school and work because of it. I then wished to teleport some place safe but wherever I went he was still behind me. Awesome video! I remember lucid dreaming frequently when i was younger and it is a brilliant experience. The capabilities of what you can do in a lucid dream is astounding. It helps open up your ability to become more imaginative and creative, which is brilliant if you are a designer, engineer musician or artist. For example, whilst dreaming I could be in a fight and have 5 large spears thrown at me into my body and rip them out of my body and throw them back at the opponent without waking up or getting injured in the dream. I could teleport, fly, do huge jumps that could make me leap a mile into the air as well as cover huge distances. I could have superhuman strength, hold my breath underwater forever, survive through fires which would usually burn and kill you in several seconds. The list of things are endless and i truly miss those moments. Unsurprisingly, my favorite film ever is Inception and i enjoy it so much because it somewhat relates strongly to the concept of lucid dreaming. Its a beautiful crafted film and if you have ever lucidly dreamt to the level of expertise i have you will realize how powerful that movie is and how much you can relate. PLEASE make another video on lucid dreaming where you can look at ways to increase your chances of lucid dreaming and how to control the dream. For begginners who first start, it can be rather disappointing because having the ability to control and plan your dream can be overwhelming and cause you to wake up from the dream.

I had these dreams a couple of times.

Lucid Dreaming comes naturally to me, and until a couple of years ago I thought that everyone could lucid dream. After that I felt so lucky, but I was confused when others told me that they couldn’t lucid dream. Guess I’m part of the 20-30%!

I believe it helps a lot. It has given me many fail scenarios, helps me avoid things I’ve failed out in my dream and avoid them in real life. It’s kind of weird but I’ve been stabbed to death and shot to death as well. I’ve been able to repull these dreams in other dreams and go through these scenarios and figure out where I went wrong. Kinda neat. It’s like an extra life in a video game. Hopefully this helps.

You're damn right. In Christianity we say God has given us a vision of what is to happen. And if you face it in reality, you will certainly know what to do to avoid it if you notice and remember it just in time

Initially, I thought everyone experiences lucid dreams because I have them almost regularly. But when I asked my friends what did they usually do when they took control of their dreams, they looked surprised and said they haven't experienced one

But how am I supposed to remember this when I’m dreaming? The only thing I can remind myself when I don’t know how to get out of a nightmare, I just open my eyes really wide and I wake up in my bed, but I’m not really awake and it’s just a simulation almost, I am paralyzed when I do that but at least I don’t see no demons or anything when I’m paralyzed, I just hear voices and watch my arm not move as it feels like I’m moving my limbs.
