- Cantonese is notorious for having 6 tones and being even more difficult than the language beast that is Mandarin. Not that many people learn it which can make learning it a bit difficult as there isn't that big of a community. But Cantonese is a funny, beautiful and really interesting language! Once you able to speak Cantonese, learning Mandarin becomes so much easier. It is like having a PHD , being asked to do an elementary school homework.

Thanks so much for sharing this! Cantonese is my heritage language and i'm trying to learn how to speak it more fluently. There's most definitely an agenda that mandarin is pushed vs. cantonese in the educational system and it's sad. If the amount of resources for canto were the same as mando? BRUH, i'd also be fluent as well!!!

Hi Grace, just saw your channel by chance. Your Cantonese is very good and fluent. I am Hong Konger and just want to let you know that youngsters in HK don't like TVB so much as its TV programmes are a bit old-school. People like watching ViuTV more than TVB.

The Wingshatsui channel is good if you want learning content at a more advanced level! It’s subbed and they talk a lot about about funny Cantonese expressions. It’s subbed in Cantonese so that’s great (lots of standard Chinese mixed in as well but you’ll probably be able to tell what’s what if you’re advanced/upper intermediate). Really recommend!

Yeah you nailed it by watching cantonese movies channels. Like tvb and cantonese films. See stephen chow films they are funny. Listen to the words. I am cantonese too and speak with my family.

I love your passion for my mother's tongue. If I ever in London and I saw you in the streets, I would love to practice speaking Cantonese with you. My speaking level isn't the best. I learned to comprehend and speak Cantonese first. However, I grew up in the U.S. so I quickly learned English and how it became my primarily language. I try to continue to speak Cantonese with my family and sometimes family friends or strangers.

How did you learn Jyutping Romanisation??
Well CantoneseClass101.com taught Cantonese with jyutping, so by constantly seeing it and learning from it in their, I just got used to it and learned how it worked. There should be some videos about it on RUclips if you want to learn ^^

Well, I didn’t really have a strict schedule, I know at the beginning I definitely spent a lot more time on it than I do now, but I think at least 3 hours per week is a good amount of time to make progress! I also spent a lot of time watch tv dramas when I had holidays at school so I can’t really give you an exact number. But good luck! I’m sure you’ll make your mum proud ^^

Hmm, I'm not too sure since I started learning a long time ago. Buttt I'd say maybe 6 months for a very BASIC conversation? It's all relative to the individual though, I think.

the issue with Cantonese is that the CCP is pushing this idea that Written Chinese can work for any Chinese language. It only works for Mandarin, I personally think Hong Kong should move to an alphabet system

but as i am chinese and studied chinese mandarin language, cantonese to me is very easy, no need to learn, (bcoz cantonese is one of the many dialects of main chinese mandarin language, so called 'local version' 方言 ，note : i am not cantonese) ...

I just feel curious how come you pick Cantonese as a language to learn? No offensive at all, cause I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I think cantonese is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Plus, Spanish or Mandarin is more useful and popular language.
I actually have a video on my channel where I speak six languages, and there I explain the little story of how I started to learn Cantonese. But I continue to learn it because I think Cantonese is a very beautiful and fun language! Mandarin or Spanish may be more useful, but I don't just learn languages because of how useful they are, I learn them because they're fun!

Six are just the basic tones. There are actually nine. The other three are just tones that you simply drag it longer than normal.
Ironically people in Canton speak less Cantonese than people in Macau/Hong Kong
