I think the FWD is actually the best bang for your buck because you get three cars in one: fwd, awd, awd drift. Converting it to awd is relatively cheap (if you use third party parts for the bearings and swing shafts). Because of the front motor mount, it makes the fwd much more capable. I don't drift (yet), but I would think an awd FWD would drift/rally better because there is less weight at the back, so you can break rear traction easier, just like the Tamiya XV-01. I run my FWD with 10degree tires front and rear and drive on tiles at home and I can semi-rally around corners, which is really fun (the front tires wear out so fast you have to rotate them with the rear ones after a while). The downside, as you said, is the bodies, but I don't have much preference. Besides, the FWD bodies look gorgeous as they are. It seems like Kyosho haven't updated any Readysets in 2 years. Hi there, Ii really enjoyed your explanation. I have bigger crawler vehicles and after seeing your video I got really excited about getting a mini z MA030EVO to play indoors and eventually race just for the fun of it. Also what got me excited was learning that you also use a Flysky NB4 like me. Are wheels and tires purchased together or are they sold seperatly? 4- Can I use Panasonic envelop pro AA or would you recommend any other brand? Can't wait to start playing. Thanks for sharing
1) The receiver is 82151-03, Flysky Noble Mini-Z EVO Receiver 2) The body is a 2008 WRX, and lights are not included for this body and had to be diyed(This body does not come with LED holes) 3) Personally I like using DS Racing tires, they offer a nice range, LF1-LF5 going from grippier to slippery, depending on your surface. Wheels and tires are separately bought normally as the tires can fit all wheels, while different wheels can come in different offsets, which depending on the body you use, may have different fitment. 4) Standard AAA Eneloops actually work quite well, I personally never used the pros but I'd imagine they may give a slight better punch on power, but may not last as long. Generally lower mah batteries will produce more power for shorter bursts, while higher will give longer runtime. I'm using both Kyosho Speedhouse 800hv and orion 900hv batteries.
Informative video. Just got sucked into mini z recently. Bought a mr03 rtr. Now I’m itching to get a drift setup as well. 😐 any rtr set you personally recommend for drifting which you think is good overall, out of the box? Or are all ma020 rtr build the same?
I guess functionality wise you could go for a MA020 Civic Type R, as that is 98mm, and comes with the 98mm extension, where by default isn't included with non 98mm kits(MA020 stock only has 90/94mm). If you want cheaper options, wltoys K989 is also pretty good.
Actually I think it's good to have the extra power on hand and get used to the car with training mode off. But if you aren't able to handle it then I guess it'll be better to have it on. It's up to preference :P
Hi, may advise what wheels and tires brands to buy to fit the MA-020 AWD and i also got MR-03, for playing at home tiles surface? I have headaches choosing them. Thanks
Funny because before I watched this video I was just wondering if that part of the motor mount was even necessary or whether or not I should cut it off. Does it seem like it is necessary at all? It doesn’t help to secure the motor from what I can tell. Does the other part towards the back secure the motor at all either?
Actually it seems like it’s not even needed at all, maybe it provides some structural rigidity but running it on RCP haven’t shown any problems. I’m guessing it could be there just to prevent you from accidentally touching the motor as it does get much hotter than on the MA020 because it’s covered up inside the car.
@@Auranapse Thanks for the reply. When I had taken off the motor mount pod to open up the front end, that part you cut off didn't seem to have a purpose so when I saw that you cut it off, I thought it was probably better to not have it. I could always use a small aluminum heatsink fin to help cool the motor but not obstruct that forward postion.
Very informative video 😊👍 thank you for sharing 😊👍 you definitely seem to know your stuff 'about mini z' 😊👍 I have problems with mine 😳 I have 2 MA020 they have both developed problems with reversing 😔 have you came across this problem before? would you happen to know how to fix this? Would I be able to use one of those 'ics bluetooth' adapters to fix it? Thanks dude👍
The MA020 does not support ICS. Only ASF version of MA020 can use ICS. Are you sure they have issues reversing? Because by default, after accelerating, reversing on the controller will trigger the brake instead, and you will wait and trigger the reverse on the controller again to reverse.
@@Auranapse I do understand about the brake system etc..... I've owned mini z awd for over 10 years now 'lol' mine definitely have problems😔the only one I have left that still works 'fully' is my ma010 with mhz radio gear 😳👍are both of my MA020 doomed? What awd models come with asf radio gear? It's such a shame that they have problems as they are such fun to drive on drift setup, I can't really rate them if the problems can't be fixed☹I do have a MA015 with asf, not a good one neither....... it has flat spots all over the rev range🤷♂️I'm about done with mini z I think
It's the older MA020 cars that come with the KT18 controller are running the ASF boards(first generation MA020). I actually never had my MA020 break on me, so I'm not sure why both of yours failed the exact same way. If I were to guess, either the controller broke or one of the FETs on the board fried. Are you using the FHS or FHSS version?
I'm not really sure if it is fhs or fhss to be honest...... I do have 1 more KT19 remote for my MR03 I may try to bind that to the MA020 just to rule out the remote being broken........ 🤔 I'm wondering if perhaps there is a way of resetting the chassis side of things? what could have burned the fets out? I am a very careful driver and don't really crash that often, the problems occurred with the first one after around 2 years, then I got the second (thinking the first may have been a dud from the factory) but then with roughly 2 years of running the second one, it had developed the reverse delay problem...... it's not that either car won't reverse, the car just takes alot of time to decide what it will do, I've seen it take roughly 3 to 4 minutes of holding the trigger in the reverse position to decide that it wants to reverse, I would hate to think that I couldn't fix them because as you know yourself, the mini z is very addictive 😎👌
@@tomwright943 Hmm actually I'm not 100% sure what it could be then. Since you can reverse, it may not be the FETs after all. Maybe check if the throttle is properly trimmed to the center? If you're reversing and it doesn't reverse, try moving the car to see if it's actually trying to brake instead.
For AWD cars it's more of an aid. I recommend against using one and instead to try learning to drift without one. If you get a RWD drift chassis instead (non kyosho), like XRX DRZ or GLD, you'll need a gyro to help do most of the countersteering.
Unfortunately at the moment the only track for Mini Z had to close down until they find another place cause the rent was raised too high. Generally most ppl now play by themselves at home. Closest tracks we can play on sadly is all in Malaysia.
@@blinmann7007 The controller compatible with MA-020VE PRO is ASF2.4GHz (KT-18, EX-5UR, EX-1) MHS2.4GHz (EX-6R,EX-6, EX-2) For EX-2 you need to switch from FHSS to MHS 😊

Kyosho Mini-Z 8.5mm Racing Radial Tire (4) (20 Shore) Kyosho Mini-Z 11mm Wide Tire Set (4) (30 Shore)
Nope, I don't really recommend using one, as it's not super difficult to pick up drifting without a gyro on AWD cars. If you aren't able to pick up drifting then I guess it could help, but it does cause the car to understeer sometimes as the gyro will always try to straighten the car.
Well it depends on the controller you get. Generally most third party purchased controllers provide more setting adjustment like throttle endpoints, exponential curve for throttle/steering, and I guess better ergonormics?
Nb b The brushless Mini Zs are already ridiculously fast, especially with higher KV motors. The brushed ones like MA020 or MR03 can also run faster 50T motors and be geared up for higher top speed if needed.

Both of my cars are still running perfectly fine till this day. My MA020 uses the X Speed motor while I've actually ran li-ion batteries(2 series 2 parallel for 7.4v) on my MA030EVO. The only issues I forsee is that the stock controller may break(either the wheel or trigger), which I've seen happen before where people share on social media, but it doesn't seem to be a common occurrence to me so far. Normally the cars seem to last a long time, and if you do break something its easy enough to fix.
@@Nelson_.A it comes with standard receivers meant for use with 1/10 scale models by default. But there's an option where you could get a bundle that package 2 EVO receivers which you can use with EVO Mini Zs.
Great vid! Considering getting into Mini-z with my boys, but there are soooo many different chassis versions. Currently waiting on an MA020 to arrive (because of this video). :) What is the difference between the MR03 and the MR03S2? MA020 = AWD MR03/MR03S2 = RWD
The sports is the previous generation of Mini Zs, using the blue KT19 controller. It's using a slightly older radio frequency and is not as reliable as the current black controller version. The fets on the sports are not as good as the current generation's MR03, which can run 50T motors while the sports version will burn out the board. . Quite a few people mistakenly label the Mini Zs with black KT531P controller sports.
Depends on what you want really. The ones with the black KT531P are pretty good and seems reliable. If you wanna stick to Mini Z ecosystem, MR03 for racing, MA020 for drifting, MA030 for both(or if you want a AWD racer). There are many other options out there if you are more experienced or are willing to jump into open RC electronics, like 1/10 scale, where you have to choose all the electronics yourself.
Bro, from your perpective, if i came from ma020(front one way, cs mod) is it worth it or is it significantly different to upgrade to ma030evo, for drifting only. Thanks before.
Nah, I say it's better to pass. The experience isn't so game changing that you would want to spend more than the MA020 just to get a slightly better car that you may or may not find better. Especially since you already have the MA020. If you want another drifter however, I would highly recommend looking into a RWD drifter instead, as those are a completely different experience and very fun. And there's a reason to have both AWD and RWD drifters individually for different strengths, like the Atomic DRZ, XRX DPA, HGD1 etc. Unless you do have someone to play with, a MA030EVO as a 2nd car to run together with would be pretty fun.

I guess functionality wise you could go for a MA020 Civic Type R, as that is 98mm, and comes with the 98mm extension, where by default isn't included with non 98mm kits(MA020 stock only has 90/94mm). If you want cheaper options, wltoys K989 is also pretty good.
@@Auranapse cool I’ll check that out. Thanks!
Hi, how did you get your lights set up on your wrx body? I’m trying to do the same to mine but the lights dont seem to be clear like the other bodies
Love your videos and willingness to help out us noobs 😊 btw do you recommend running training mode for drifting with stock controller? thanks!
Actually I think it's good to have the extra power on hand and get used to the car with training mode off. But if you aren't able to handle it then I guess it'll be better to have it on. It's up to preference :P
Great vid, i have been looking for this info
Hi, may advise what wheels and tires brands to buy to fit the MA-020 AWD and i also got MR-03, for playing at home tiles surface? I have headaches choosing them. Thanks
hi Auranapse! do you recommend HGd1 or HGV1 for RWD drifting? thank you
Funny because before I watched this video I was just wondering if that part of the motor mount was even necessary or whether or not I should cut it off.
I could always use a small aluminum heatsink fin to help cool the motor but not obstruct that forward postion.
is your ma020 (gtr) stock in that drift clip at the end?
thanks for the informative video, I'm new to mini zs. May I know the best shops to buy ready sets and parts for mini z in Singapore? thanks.
Locally in SG we have Small Drift Machines and ToyKar. Otherwise I do get stuff from Banzai Hobby too.
@@Auranapse okay thanks a lot!
I got my MA-020 from RCmart instead. Toykar is more expensive.
Hey man, thanks for the clip. Is the gyro system a necessity, or a luxury? Cheers.
For AWD cars it's more of an aid. I recommend against using one and instead to try learning to drift without one.
If you get a RWD drift chassis instead (non kyosho), like XRX DRZ or GLD, you'll need a gyro to help do most of the countersteering.
just wondering if the mini z scene in singapore is dead in 2022? could you find any tracks or any active community.
Unfortunately at the moment the only track for Mini Z had to close down until they find another place cause the rent was raised too high. Generally most ppl now play by themselves at home. Closest tracks we can play on sadly is all in Malaysia.
@@Auranapse if you have a recommendation in JB do share! I just got started into Mini z :)
@@axdkn I've only heard of RCDestination in Johor. The others are mostly near KL area.
I love MA-020VE PRO
because can be used MHS & Brushless motor
Hey I have the Ma020VE pro as well, may i ask if it’s compatible with KO EX2 controllers thanks 🙏
@@blinmann7007
The controller compatible with MA-020VE PRO is
ASF2.4GHz (KT-18, EX-5UR, EX-1)
MHS2.4GHz (EX-6R,EX-6, EX-2)
For EX-2 you need to switch from FHSS to MHS 😊
Hi, I'm trying to find the part number for the motor cover of MA030 that you have on this video. Can you please provide the part number for this item? Thanks!
It's the stock motor cover, I've manually cut the cover off to allow for more clearance for some bodies.
Yes, the MA-030 stock motor cover - do you know the part number for that? I can only find this - KYOMD402 - but I don't think the motor cover is included in this parts kit. Thank you!
@@Auranapse
@@jeffroque7562 I think it's MD302
@@Auranapse I looked it up and that kit includes a motor cover that looks similar to the MA030. However, the parts description says it's for FWR. I guess I'll just order it and see. Thanks again!
@@jeffroque7562 the FWD chassis is the MA030, just without a driveshaft to the rear.
Thank you very much. Please do more videos.
+1 keep talking! You have well considered views on the platforms you review 👌🙌
Hello I'm new beginner mini z awd ma 020 what wheels and tire more grip with hardwood floor I try to order awd multi offset ..I can't pick tires. Just home racing play. Just drives straight and round come back. Maybe I order wrong .
Next time I'll buy rwd ...Thanks and much love for videos..
Kyosho Mini-Z 8.5mm Racing Radial Tire (4) (20 Shore)
Kyosho Mini-Z 11mm Wide Tire Set (4) (30 Shore)
If you need tires to grip on hardwood floor I recommend looking for sponge or foam tires. But they are harder to come by.
Do you use gyro unit?
Nope, I don't really recommend using one, as it's not super difficult to pick up drifting without a gyro on AWD cars. If you aren't able to pick up drifting then I guess it could help, but it does cause the car to understeer sometimes as the gyro will always try to straighten the car.
@@Auranapse oh I just bought it, but would it be better than not having one?
@@MelvinFung You can use one if you want. It's mostly personal preference. Since you already got it, might as well try it out :P
Does upgrading the radio from stock plastic one make a big difference?
Well it depends on the controller you get. Generally most third party purchased controllers provide more setting adjustment like throttle endpoints, exponential curve for throttle/steering, and I guess better ergonormics?
I think it will be so much fun 👍😊👍
Is it worth getting the gyro for drifting or is it better without
I would recommend learning to drift without. It's not really needed at all. If you have trouble with learning to slide it does help.
hi is it possible to convert a rm motor mount to lm mount on a mini z ma03
Bb Brew Yea it should, all the motor sizes for Mini Z is standard, so you can use the motor for all the motor mounts
can you make any of the current kyosho mini z cars turbo?
Bb Brew I don't think there's a turbo mode, the ESC doesn't have one.
i seen some really fast mini z how?
Nb b The brushless Mini Zs are already ridiculously fast, especially with higher KV motors. The brushed ones like MA020 or MR03 can also run faster 50T motors and be geared up for higher top speed if needed.

Can the MA-020 use the flysky noble nb4 radio?
Nope it cannot.

@@ivantay2307 Whoa! Didn't know this existed. Thanks for showing me, looks like it's possible to use the NB4 then :D
@@Auranapse Just found that out too. NB4 on my wishlist now!
What about the longevity?
Both of my cars are still running perfectly fine till this day. My MA020 uses the X Speed motor while I've actually ran li-ion batteries(2 series 2 parallel for 7.4v) on my MA030EVO. The only issues I forsee is that the stock controller may break(either the wheel or trigger), which I've seen happen before where people share on social media, but it doesn't seem to be a common occurrence to me so far. Normally the cars seem to last a long time, and if you do break something its easy enough to fix.
What receiver are you using with the ma030?
I'm using it with the Flysky Noble NB4
@@Auranapse Does the NB4 come with a receiver to put in the chassis?
@@Nelson_.A it comes with standard receivers meant for use with 1/10 scale models by default. But there's an option where you could get a bundle that package 2 EVO receivers which you can use with EVO Mini Zs.
The problem is, where to buy it, I'm in Singapore, I guess where you are. Do help.
Locally we have SmallDriftMachines, I also sometimes get stuff from Banzaihobby and HRC Arena.
Excellent
Great vid! Considering getting into Mini-z with my boys, but there are soooo many different chassis versions. Currently waiting on an MA020 to arrive (because of this video). :) What is the difference between the MR03 and the MR03S2?
MA020 = AWD
MR03/MR03S2 = RWD
The sports is the previous generation of Mini Zs, using the blue KT19 controller. It's using a slightly older radio frequency and is not as reliable as the current black controller version. The fets on the sports are not as good as the current generation's MR03, which can run 50T motors while the sports version will burn out the board. .
Quite a few people mistakenly label the Mini Zs with black KT531P controller sports.
Auranapse oh my!!! Didn’t realize there would be all those differences. What other ReadySet would you recommend getting?
Depends on what you want really. The ones with the black KT531P are pretty good and seems reliable. If you wanna stick to Mini Z ecosystem, MR03 for racing, MA020 for drifting, MA030 for both(or if you want a AWD racer).
There are many other options out there if you are more experienced or are willing to jump into open RC electronics, like 1/10 scale, where you have to choose all the electronics yourself.
@@Auranapse Thank you!!!! Will be sticking to the mini Z family for now. Appreciate your responses and look forward to future videos!
Auranapse Auranapse thanks bro, for your prompt reply, really appreciate it. I'll do some research about rwd drift kit then..
after a long time I must say that ma020 is better
