- 2020-2022 Toyota Yaris chalks up a full 5 stars.
Toyota’s 4th-generation Yaris emerges with flying colours from Euro NCAP’s 2020 test programme. The car is the first to be subjected to an all-new frontal offset test, which replaces the one previously used since the programme started in 1997, and is the first to feature a counter-measure for injuries in far-side impacts. The mobile progressive deformable barrier (MPDB) test assesses the protection a car offers its occupants as well as the risks it poses to the car it has crashed into.
The Yaris, in general, does well, its small size and benign front end making it one of the less aggressive crash partners on the road. Two centre-mounted airbags inflate in side impacts to limit an occupants’ travel to the opposite side of the vehicle and to mitigate the risk of occupant to occupant contact. The Yaris also showcases the rapid advancements in crash avoidance technology: the latest generation of Toyota Safety Sense now can stop the vehicle during turning to avoid a crash with oncoming traffic.
Euro NCAP’s Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said “Congratulations to Toyota on a top rating for the Yaris. This has been a tough year for all concerned and I am grateful to Euro NCAP’s labs and employees who have worked hard to deliver safety, while staying safe. We have had to adapt quickly to new working practices, and it is pleasing that the first car rated this year should have gone so far to address the safety issues that are emerging as top priorities.”

Impressive middle airbags preventing passenger head knocks.
Is that a conceivable scenario, though? Do seatbelts not restrict such an event from occurring? And say if your car is hit from the side, do not both passengers fling the same way, so such an event would never occur?

How many accidents involve driver-passenger hitting with each other? I find it a little redundant and it only works for marketing reason to have one more air bag on paper. The body chassis of the Yaris is weak, it's passive safety is not that good, it is like is made of coca cola can

@@hurartrip then check up crash tests results. TOYOTA’s are the strongest (and more safe cars!) actually in production!! Of course car body is a tin. Like in every car. Intelligently done armor is built in TNGA platform with very good weight to durability ratio!!

@@baseline4102 there aren't stricter rules to maintain good safety rating though. Only recently they made mandatory for driver and front passenger for airbags.

You can't compare the polo because the polo hasn't been put through this new test procedure where the barrier is moving it's a tougher test, sure the polo will do just has well though.

This new crash test is quite better. It's phisyc, 50 km/h against 50km/h= impact of 100km/h... more than 64!!

Secondo me da adesso le case costruttrici cominceranno nuovamente a capire come migliorare la sicurezza, alla fine se non passano questo test venderanno molto meno, ormai i crash test erano tutti uguali tutti lo passavano e con risultati quasi identici tra loro e infine la sorpresa del l’airbag centrale, pensavo fosse ancora un concept
