They fought with a sense of patriotism and strong national identity . These days if Ireland were invaded people would have no sense of identity or national pride and would probably not fight.
What a treasure to have this brave man's story. They stood up to a superior enemy terrorist force in the British government truly inspiring.God bless their memory.
Irish history is almost unbelievable genocide before it had a name the courage of the men and women who joined the cause of irish Republicanism must have known fighting the empire was a longshot ar best and they won amazing
@Mark Kenny so I learned all I know from an visiting professor the famine did the English allow the Irish to die and not only allowed but took all the livestock and other foodstuffs out of ireland while two thirds of the native irish died of starvation or emigrated or was he lying
That is a shocking and flagrant lie. Our population doubled 1801-41. How is that genocide? Many of us were saved by aid from GB during the Famine. We received the same welfare benefits as our neighbours in Great Britain. Tenants in Ireland were able to purchase the farms they worked against the wishes of the owners and the government lend the tenants money for that. Per capita government spending in Ireland was higher than in GB when we were all part of the UK. We had a higher life expectancy than Great Britain. We were enthusiastic imperialists. We served the empire in the British Army, the Royal Navy, the colonial service and provided governors-general.
@@GeorgeFromIrelandReflections George those are not famine years in the famine years I million people died of starvation and 1million were forced by hunger to emigrate in this time England shipped cattle sheep and grains out of Ireland to feed their own people as the potato blight hit Brittain as hard as it hit ireland
I actually believe that boris Johnson would invade Ireland again if he thought Britain would get away with it. Unfortunately a leopard never changes his spots no matter how much we would like to believe they do.
Only a coward would do nothing while his country was invaded, the real coward was the invader that shot old and young woman and children while burning their homes
