  • Maurice O'Callaghan, author, lawyer and filmmaker, was guest speaker on the 12th October 2014, at the official opening of the redevelopment of the historic site of the Kilmichael Ambush in West Cork which occurred on the 28th of November 1920, when Tom Barry's Flying Column struck a major blow for Irish freedom by defeating a heavily armed unit of the Auxiliaries of the British Army. One of the most important historical battle sites in the world, the redevelopment was undertaken by the Kilmichael Historical Society, the Kilmichael and Crossbarry Commemoration Committee with assistance from the West Cork Development Partnership.

My name is José Wallace, my father was born in 1889 in Multyfarnham Co. Westmeath and emigrated to Argentina in 1915. He raised his family here in Argentina. I am 79 years old and since my young age of 18 I have been spreading Irish history. For this reason, I request (if possible) that these commemorative videos have the subtitles in Spanish in order to be able to disseminate them. Thank you very much. All the videos are extremely interesting.

I had the honour of walking with a group of friends last Saturday on the 28th day of November, we walked from the graveyard in Castletownkenneigh where the 3 volunteers that fell in Kilmichael are buried, from there we walked to Aihilan and onto Kilmichael, following the footsteps of the flying column. We walked in memory of those brave men who fought that day, and in hindsight it was not a walk but a pilgrimage. These were true patriots. God rest them all.

This is excellent, Maurice. A fiery speech of blood and inherent meaning for the sad state we find ourselves in nowadays, you very succinctly and no less passionately remind your audience of what needs to be remembered about our nation and the due of the men and women of our own revolution. It goes without saying that we have need of that decency, that pride, that degree of commitment in the present day grey and dismal period of our history. Good on you!

What a great speech! Excellent, clear and understandable English for us children of Irish people living in Argentina, (at the end of the world as Pope Francis says). It would be interesting if the subtitles could be reproduced in Spanish. Thank you for this great gift.

Just found your video, Maurice.... I'll say nothing of its contents for its easy to agree with the sentiments overall.... I prefer to mention how joyed I was to see you looking so well, fresh, assertive, passionate and youthful... a bit like our University-days, which I cherish... My only regret is that we did not talk more, much more, about the feelings that inspired your speech and your later creative career... I really regret that.... It's really great to see you in such find fettle... and kicking ass as well... Cheers!

Met Tom Kelleher many years ago as an old old man,who stood and spoke at the republican monument in Derry ,in rain and cold though frail his words ran out true to those against the the good Friday agreement to the dismay of the onlooking SF traitor's,to the other small band of real republicans it was a continual link from Tom Barry's/ Kellehers to us assembled there
