I do this same thing, sometimes I’m lazy and just use the loop as is but most of the times I chop it into 16th so I can keep a clean conscience 😅.

I just wonder why you're not using the Drum Buss tool which is a great tool for making phat Boom Bap drums (also great for other genres) and also really good for Bass enhancement. I also recommend CARVER transient shaper which is only M4L device and has no latency at all. It even picking up the slightest transients so very responsive to soft shakers, hi-hats and other percussive sounds.

Crazy question.. can you sidechain drum breaks? If not, what's your workaround?

When I use breaks for Sidechain I usually set the eq on the compressor to 60hz so it can activate when ever the kick drum hits
