The Anti-Everything Tank Gun

- In a previous video, we took a look at the US Army's Medium Caliber Anti-Armor Automatic Cannon (MCAAC) program. Built by Ares Inc., the 75mm XM274 cannon built for the program was incredibly impressive, featuring roughly 105mm performance and milti-role capability. The Ares gun was ultimately deemed inadequate, however, and the 105mm M35 cannon was chosen for future light vehicles. In the early 2000s, the concept of a rapid firing gun using cased telescoped ammunition was revived, this time for the Future Combat Systems program. It was called MRAAS, the Multi-Role Armament & Ammunition System. Influenced heavily by the XM274, the MRAAS cannon sought to take its multi-role capability to the extreme.

I imagine the enviornmentally friendly characteristic was something they said because they knew they were thinking caseless rounds that won't leave debris in the enviornment. And also to say they don't want it to be toxic as hell.
My first thought was as deadly as possible , less humans is more environmentally friendly , though that's a bit of a dark thought :/
You are right though , the thought of the army thinking of how shell cases would impact the environment never crossed my mind
Well, if they actually would want it to be environmentally friendly, then they wouldn’t use DU ammunition in the first place.
@@valeriucb6497 lol shell casings are bad, but all those Soviet tanks that cooked off ammo in the Rheinland are fine
@@generalolivervonbismarck393 generally speaking, it's easier to find and clean up every tank vs every shell casing, if the cases are made of polymers that can break down into toxic chemicals like carcinogens that's a diplomatic incident waiting to happen, best shift responsibilities to arms dealers with a blanket term like environmentally friendly
Environmentally friendly is because the military has to actually shoot this stuff to train in the continental United States as well. I.E. it has to use ranges. I.E. it needs to keep those ranges habitable for the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines that use them, and it's bound by the EPA. It's also a great way to politically promote a fantastic tactical weapon.
The same was done with the M855A1 5.56 round, which is just silly amounts more lethal than the previous round, got similar ballistics out of the carbine that previous rounds got out of the full length rifle, etc.
Cleaning ranges and training areas is expensive. So is the VA.

I’m fairly certain the 88mm flak gun was also referred to by allied troops as the ‘Anti-Everything Gun’ at one point, with it being used for anti-air, anti-tank, indirect fire artillery and (rarely) anti-personnel.

The idea of a biodegradeable tank shell is making me lose my goddamn mind. "Is this war crimes machine ethically sourced? Was this made with free-range depleted uranium?"
It's usually just buzzword marketing. Engineers design a product, then pass it off to marketing who are either clueless about the technical features, or are actively dumbing down their sales pitches to appeal to someone who is. As a result they emphasize coincidental features like the biodegradability of casings over the actual design priorities that led to them.
Armored vehicles are cramped and it is a good idea not to have toxins building up inside them. It could limit the crew's fighting effectiveness.
Then there is the practice range, where officers spend a good deal of time. You don't want to lose a veteran officer prematurely due to preventable health issues
Well actually such a concept works well. After all we have developed spiders that can spin literal bulletproof webs that are hyper thin. Now upscale that. And apply it to takes. They will be many many times stronger than any vehicle that exists. Probably even blocking the most ridiculous AP artillery rounds.
The impact will still probably kill the crew though.
There is indeed no point in having a military if the earth is uninhabitable
Shell casing materials aren't going to have any tangible effect on that. Nevermind that most (if not all) of the modern environmentalism lobby isn't about the Earth's environment.

The only nato country that didn't continously upgrade their MBT's was the Uk (until recently) everyone else that could afford to do so did and even those that couldn't afford massive upgrades still spend money on a couple upgrades or developed their own (turkey being an example).
Also given that the US allready went through 2 or 3 proposed ''abrahams replacement'' programs (that didn't result in anything because of the cost and the lack of a need) before the T-14 even was announced and that the french and germans have been working on the MGCS since 2016 i dont think anyone on Natos side is about to discover anything. Man FCS had some questionable assumptions going into the basic vehicle designs. Like the low armor protection in lieu of a smattering of sensors.
But damn did it have some interesting weapon systems designed across the whole program. Kinda sad that none ever got adopted or even modified for use in other platforms.
Well except for maybe the Next gen Abrams new gun..
@bob bobthebobbobofbobby yeah, one of the reasons why the AIM-260 development (AIM-120 AMRAAM replacement) has been so quick was likely because Lockheed could leverage the knowledge gained from a slew of research data from never to be/eventually cancelled designs of the 2000s/2010s for air to air missiles
@@moonbear2130 SLAMRAAM
Maybe the Army could make better use of these weapon systems if they tried developing a modular remote weapon station designed to fit with the existing Stryker vehicle (like the 30mm and 105mm guns they added to it) instead of building a whole new armored vehicle around it. That way, if the gun itself fails irredeemably in development, it doesn't compromise a larger system of systems, nor does the experimental gun rely on the sucess of a whole new vehicle.
FCS had low armor because they wanted "deployability" or the ability to fly on a C-130 cargo plane. They nixed that and used it to the bigger C-17, but they still needed to fit in the GIC train tunnel. It was also dreamed up pre-heavy EID threat. Then the next new program was GCV, which was basically Abrambs weight troop carrier. I worked on both programs as a suspension designer.
So Ukraine is proving quite handedly that having good sensors is far more important then armor with modern anti armor weapons. If one should be traded it should be armor for sensors. He who see and shoots accurately first is usually winning the engagement period.
As soon as you mentioned all the things it would do I thought "alright which was it? Too expensive or hard to maintain?"

Disappointed: I thought you meant the 12"/305mm gun firing tactical nuclear rounds, which are quite effective against most targets.
It's almost like every time the U.S. Army tries to get a 'I want it to do everything with no drawbacks" weapon system, it fails miserably. Weird, huh?

Just shredding everything in those clips, seems OP
Seems like it would make a good naval gun
Despite it's failure, I see a potential in this project for a ship (think of heavy cruisers) mounted 150mm+ version. Here you mentioned that 105mm missiles had range of up to 50km. 150mm missile with top down capabilites could have significantly more range. And before anyone jumps in screaming how ship launced large diameter missiles already exist, their ammo storage is extremly limited, ships need to be dry docked to be rearmed which puts them out of service for days or even weeks, not to mention the equipment (and man power) needed to lift missiles, align them perfectly and drop them in a ship. If such system were to be installed, where missiles would be placed on their side rather than vertically, ammo storage could be increased by a lot, ships could be loaded more easyly and options for field reloads from dedicated missile carying subs are endless. Heck, make it so the ship itself is a dock for a sub in a way.
I am not an expert and I don't know how many souch ships would operate in a carrier group but these puppies could make US and NATO's most valuable military assets near invincible.
Edit: any 3 letter agencies and their contractors interested? Maybe? Would be amazing to work for one.
Hey you just invented the Zumwalt Class's AGS
Yes, currently most of the navies' vertical missile launch system cannot be reloaded outside of a harbour.

I have to say that I love your videos; they are well researched and the visuals are entertaining. I do have one suggestion, and this isn't meant as criticism. You should slow down a little on your narration. Sometimes you kind of mush the words together and I end up going back to catch what you said. I know everything on RUclips is supposed to be fast due to the average attention span being practically zero now, but you're well under ten minutes and could afford some time for pacing. High ROF AT weapons when your intended future enemy has swarms of tanks. Sounds like a good idea to me lol. Platoon of Ares tanks hidden along the flanks of Russian vehicle columns. Given what we've seen in Ukraine, that wouldnt have been hard lol.
Russia =/= soviet union
The Russians in the beginning of the invasion through out the soviet handbook and tried something new. It failed.
The soviet approach is much more similar to the current Russian method, which is so far proveing successful if slow. But most importantly they aren't getting flanked anymore.
Combine this with the so iet military being alot bigger relative to nato than the Russians are compaired to Ukraine and flanking is not a reliable method.which is the conclusion nato came to after analysing the Soviets wargames and tactics in Afghanistan.
