Assassin’s Creed Rogue is a really underrated game! Shay was a great protagonist considering the fact that he sacrificed himself and his career as an assassin for the greater good of humanity. It was the first game to give players the chance to play as a Templar. Furthermore, the game had excellent shanties and music, as well as naval combat, and there were many fun activities. As far as the characters go, there were some great side characters in this story, like George Monro, Haytham Kenway, and Adewale, etc. It's not the best Assassin's Creed game, but it deserves way more attention than it received. In the future, it would be interesting if Ubisoft released another game with Shay or another game with a Templar perspective.

Rogue is so underrated, when I first played I was drawn to the main theme, seriously I would sit at the main menu for a few minutes just to listen to the music. It’s refreshing that it was set during the Seven Years War since this period isn’t really talked about that much. Since I actually played Unity first I searched about how Arno’s father got killed and this led me to Rogue, and ended playing this game more than Unity, mostly for the reasons mentioned in this video. It was quite a shame that we only got to see a bit of the Colonial Brotherhood and there weren’t more of it

I really enjoyed Rogue, and it's definitely one of my favorites in the series. Shay is a great protagonist, and the rest of the characters are interesting/solid. I also really liked the River Valley and Artic locations, the soundtrack, and similar-Black Flag gameplay (though I understand why some people didn't). I especially like the AC3 and Black Flag connections, and having played each of them somewhat recently, following the story throughout each of these different games was especially fun.
My main criticism of Rogue would be the Templar element of the story. I felt like AC1 and AC3 did a better job of presenting the other side than Rogue, which I felt, maybe due to length, didn't go into the philosophical debate as thoroughly as the other games did. I also wished that Rogue utilized its historical context more. Playing AC3, I felt that the Revolutionary War was all around me, and thought the same thing with the Renaissance in AC2 and Brotherhood, and the Golden Age of Piracy in Black Flag. With Rogue, outside of the missions towards the second half of the game, it felt like it could've taken place anytime between 1700-1800, and not just during the French and Indian War.

I really love how Shay Cormac defeating the Stalkers highlights his familiarity with the Assassins' methods and tactics. Being that he was an Assassin himself, it makes obvious sense that he would be privy to how his former comrades operated and how he reworked his own fighting style to turn their own skills against them.
I believe a quote 3TopicsGamer in his Shay vs. Aveline Versus Series video perfectly sums up the characters skills and talents, and it's that Shay Cormac is the "Darth Vader" of the Assassin's Creed series. In the franchise's entire chronological history, has been no other Templar like him before or since, and that makes him exceedingly unique among the franchise's protagonists.

This and Unity are my two favorites in the whole series, they both improved on so much from the previous games: Rogue is basically Black Flag with muuuch better naval combat, improved combat and many fewer bugs and glitches. With the pandemic and everything and with a wife working as a nurse....The world was quite the scary place...I was working from home and absolutley fell in love with the series, started out with the Ezio Collection and made my way trough all of em in a span of a few weeks...Assassin's Creed Rogue has by far been my favourite, i love the "depth" of Shay, he's way more intresting then many of the other assassin's with that he's much more conflicted then many of the others we get to play as. After playing through Rogue and getting a roughly 80% completion rate, I can see why the Colonial Brotherhood is considered by many a weak and broken brotherhood when they were messing around and trying to disturb the precursor temples that as stated have the power to destroy cities.
It was sad to see Shay have to fight and kill his friends (especially Adewale if you played AC4 beforehand and to an extent Freedom cry) and as well as the game showing both sides with the Assassins and Templars and found myself seeing how both sides in of themselves can be good (or bad)
and finally the modern day sections, only really explored for the tablets to get the best pistols and that was it. It was boring and I hated when the experience was interrupted to do some random task for this girl that had an annoying voice (I actually muted voices during the modern day sections until I got back into the animus)

The stalkers show the potential of an Assassins vs Templars multiplayer game. The fact they’re AI controlled makes them less of a challenge to the more practiced players, and putting an actual person at the controls so you’re either trying to assassinate a player or trying to outsmart a human controlled assassin would be quite the experience and a new take on a multiplayer.

They should make another game based on the same premise To play on the Templar's point of view, Like trying to take down a bunch of radicalist, or misguided Assassins a different branch that lost its way. Or another idea would be To make a game where you get to choose which side you want to be on, and be able to play the story from both point of views on 2 different play throws

    Great review and the last 10 sec of the video were fire. But there are some false information;
    1. Combat did change
You got the firecrackers that work like the blood bombs from Revelations kinda, bounty hunters and ofc stalkers. Especially the air assassination fights were great af.
    2. Parkour did change
They added the new scaffold automatic stuff which are good IMO tho I prefer climbing scaffolds manually in AC4, tho they were rare. They also re-introduced civilian air tackle and air assassination making the parkour a bit better. I enjoyed 'flying' on flags and the cheap zipppines, besides its the only game that has those unless Revelations and Origins, Syndicate partually.
    3. Boarding is not the same
You can get boarded by enemies now which is pointless unless you have a difficulty changer mod
    4. In fact Rogue has better graphics
Black Flag has an exotic boost but the textures and graphics are 5% better in Rogue

Wow can't believe I'm finally early for one of these. Even though I enjoy Rogue and think every AC fan should give it a try, it's definetely among my least favorite of the series. Most people who praise the game tend to focus on the story and Shay's character, but ignore the fact that the way Rogue plays out its premise is as generic as possible (the Assassins and Templars basically switching places for no reason). While I think Shay's "betrayal" of the Assassins is executed well enough and he is justified in his actions, we are given no reason to symphatize with the Templars other than they are nice. For a game with a premise like this, I expected it to be more philosophical (like AC 1 and 3), but instead the premise is wasted on another generic good guys vs bad guys story.
Maybe the story would've been better if Shay was written differently, but he loses any bit of personality and intirgue he had after the first act. As for the side characters, they are either generic and forgettable, or unlikeable jerks for no reason (this game managed to make Haytham, one of the best characters in the franchise, boring).
As for the gameplay, it's fine, but the problem is that Black Flag didn't have that good land gameplay to begin with, so this is reflected in Rogue. I appreciate all the little improvements, but they're not enough to salvage Black Flag's gameplay. And the world is just one of the worst in the series. The North Atlantic is beautiful enough at night, but it's a boring mess of copy pasted island, and the other two parts of the map, I just didn't care for them (not to mention the River Valley is completely made up).
Overall, Rogue is a perfectly fine game, it's fun to play in spite of its flawed gameplay and boring world, but I just can't get over how Ubisoft completely wasted this premise and treated some of the characters. 7/10 (only get it if you like Black Flag's gameplay or are a hardcore fan of the series)
If you made it to the end of this essay, good job. Here, have a lolipop 🍭

I remember I actually was holding onto my 360 cause I just loved it and I ended up pre-ordering both Unity/Rogue. Rogue was my favorite of the two, it just had a great setting imo and Shay is a great protagonist. I wanna go back to play Unity cause I sold it before it was polished and never beat it.

I definitely think it’s worth buying and playing especially if it’s on sale which I’m pretty sure it goes on sale quite a bit. It’s good but not better than most of the games in the series but imo it’s better than the 3 most recent games in the series

Rogue didn’t quite have the same awesome vibe that Black Flag had but that’s because it is a completely different type of story. Black Flag was no doubt a better game but the way they changed things up but still kept it revolving around a ship captain type of story was actually amazing. The idea of having 2 different maps that were both very different from each other and diffferent from black flag was a great idea. Also being a Templar and having assassins hunting you was a great addition. PLUS you actually get the rope dart at a reasonable time in the game and can actually use it lol

A can totally agree the best way to play is rogue > ac3 and maybe ac4 before rogue
The game is special to me the reason is , it was made by Ubisoft Sofia Bulgaria , where I was born. I didn’t even know until the very end of the game where the developers left a little Easter egg I suppose something hilarious written in Bulgarian language. Have a great day brothers assassins

If you seek out the dropped data pads around Abstergo Entertainment in the present day there’s quite a bit of interesting tidbits including in-universe acknowledgment that they reused the Animus interface from the Kenway research project. The mystery computer virus storyline doesn’t have payoff but the present day protagonist does present a contrast to the one from Black Flag in that this time you are approached to join the Templars and not the Assassins.

I don’t know. I feel like rogue is pretty weak. Seems like ubi just swapped the assassins and templars in this game just for convenience ( assassins act like templars and templars like assassins) but I don’t know. Would of liked them to do a unity sequel with shay as the antagonist tho! Would of been awesome!

@@memecliparchives2254 the Assassins were more evil than the Templars in Revelations though. Assassin's sided with the slave owning Ottoman empire. And Ezio basically kills hundreds of people because he blew up a gunpowder barrel so he could kill one templar guy.

  • @AONTrappy

Using Shay as an assassin gone templar is a fantastic dynamic that bridged the storylines together by giving us an "outsider pov" of the current and past affairs of both factions at large, in addition to key character motivations across AC3/AC4. Honestly, Rogue is positioned excellently in the storyline and completed the Kenway Saga in the Americas in order for a new storyline to emerge. Rogue will always be the outlier to the franchise and should not be considered its own game and instead a DLC to black flag, that ending scene alone is an iconic cliffhanger that introduces us to Unity.

AC ROGUE IS A MUST I THINK IT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIMELINE OF AC SINCE IT LETS US SEE THE GOAL OF THE OTHER SIDE, TEMPLAR IN THIS TIMELINE IS KINDA RIGHT JUST BECAUSE OF SHAYS ACTIONS, THE WAY HE SACRIFICED HIS ASSASSIN PATH JUST TO STOP THE ASSASSINS AND TO SAVE HUMANITY, IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE SHAY HUNTING DOWN ASSASSIN OR CONNOR HUNTS DOWN SHAY I JUST HOPE THEY BRING BACK THE OLD AC MECHANICS

  • @ahgksi

Assassin's Creed Rogue was a brilliant game imo. I never understood the hate behind it.
If you loved Blackflag, how can you not love Rogue , that game basically improved upon the mechanics of Blackflag and introduced more like snowy water etc.
The story was also very good and it felt like a breath of fresh air seeing the Templar's POV after so many Assassins games. Shay was an amazing character as well ( Not as good as Edward, Ezio or Bayek ) but still very good.
The real problem was , Ubisoft should have waited 1 year to release Unity post Rogue's release.
This would not just have given Rogue time to shine , but Also would ve allowed Ubisoft to work more on Unity and make a bigger, better , smoother and optimized release of that game.
Unity's Failure also kinda affected Rogue.
It was a very very immatured and impatient move by Ubisoft to Release Unity just beside Rogue.

I will die on the hill that if Ubisoft were to ever Remake any trilogy in the series, it should be IV, Rogue and III. The disjointed, lack of chronology in this trilogy is irksome, but how much each game learns from it’s predecessor could be used to better each game as a whole. I’m so glad you said this explicitly cause it bothers the hell out of me.
