Clean the mat with isopropyl alcohol. Gotta' rub, but it comes off. Spring loaded USB cables will really launch whatever small device is attached to them when they fail. If they had a _manual_ lock on them, they'd be worth something.
Truer words where never spoken when Dave said it's better if your projects 'don't work'. You learn so much more from your mistakes than you do from your successes. Failures make you dig in and figure out what you did wrong which forces you to have to learn to understand how things work. It's really hard to get this kind of knowledge any other way. Regarding free ranging children, my mother would probably have a heart attack if she knew where my sister and I wondered off to as 9-10 year old children back in the days when kids had adventure (60s - 70s)..
Dave is really good at encouraging the next generation and teaching them to turn a mistake into a lesson learned :) very nice of you sir -- keep doing the good work!
Regular ethyl alcohol works better, it's just the anti-drinking propaganda that makes us use the inferior IPA. Also, the dye will diffuse into the plastic if you don't wash it off soon, so hurry up, Dave!
Always like that you spend a few extra minutes giving the young folks some advice, and if I may I have a couple of other suggestions for Michael. Make a trip to thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.) and you can find radios, video cameras and yes on a lucky day some test equipment. So for a few buck you can get some stuff to teardown, learn about and start collecting parts to build projects. Also, if you live in a city with a university they will from time to time have surplus sales, and you can find some amazing items on the cheap. Cheers, Mark PS: At university auctions items are often sold in lots, but you don’t have to by the whole lot, but can usually get an item or two for a few buck from the lot winner.
24:04 It says "For further specifications apply to the instruction manual for semiconductor strain gauges. The quality of the strain gauges complies with the respective rulings or requirements as sited in the contract."
That texture is TPE (ThermoPlastic Elastomer). It is over-molded on the exterior of a stronger plastic (usually) to create a comfortable "feel" for the consumer.
There are two strain guages supplied to both go in the bridge. one under compression and one under tension as they are squeezed and pulled when attached top and bottom a sort of push pull in the bridge
On the velvet feel I have seen it done with “soft touch paint”. BMW uses that in their interior parts. One of my friends use to be the technical supervisor at one of the supply plants in Spartanburg SC. His facility made dashes and center consoles for the Z3’s.
11. that is really great :) When I was a boy I was really in to electronics, made a lot of different setups, but gosh I wish there was, well Internet and you back then :) I really enjoy the EEV blog.
Wow, I have one of those Radioshack T-shirts too! I just bought mine at the store before it closed down. I feel like I should save it for posterity, but I just want to wear it around everywhere.
That "velvet-feel" coating on plastic is total rubbish, from long term perspective. It **decays** into horrible gunk that peels off. Happened to my joystick.
It was good to see how much fun Dave had with old Tesla components :) . I also have a bunch of them, mainly got from an old Tesla television set (black and white, no remote control, cca 70's vintage). Maybe, it was a bit mistake to destroy it, but it was not working.
Dave, if you are very careful a little bit of paint thinner on a cotton swab will remove that permanent ink from your ESD mat. Great video too, thanks!
That open wound cap reminded me of my xmas decorations as a kid. My Dad work in the vacuum metallising & slitting room at S.T.C. (Standard Telephone & Cables) in Paignton, Devon in the 1970's making caps just like that. I used to get rolls & rolls of that stuff & it got spread around everywhere at xmas!
Use sharpie marker to clean off sharpie marker! It's super simple: take your sharpie, and scribble all over the mark you want to remove, then immediately wipe it off. The solvent in the sharpie marker will dissolve the sharpie on the object and allow it to be removed, as long as you wipe it off before it evaporates again.
My favorite thing about the mail bag is that I can go back and watch any of them and they're still totally relevant! Okay, maybe it's not the Year of the Goat anymore, but still!
At 7:52 - Dave - I picked up the Radio Shack T-Shirt on my very last trip to the local store for some bankruptcy bargain hunting. It was interesting as the store was full of people who grew up on RS and were collectively reminiscing about the "good old times". I saw the shirt and knew you had to have one!
Dave, the zigzag antenna pattern is not there to "get the wavelength." The pattern acts as a coil, getting down the impedance to the desired matching value of the driver. Most transmitters with undersized antennas will have a trimmable coil like that to get reasonable power output.
+1 me aswell. I study at FEI STUBA (Faculty of Electrical Engeneering at Slovak Technical University). I never thought that there are actually so many people watching from Slovakia. By the way I have also a lot of old Tesla components ...

Yeah the soft touch silicone was on everything in 2005 or so. It tends to disintegrate into a sticky mess in 2 or 3 years that takes an enormous amount of elbow grease to remove.
LOL. First time I heard you got something from Slovakia :) So fun to hear people from abroad how they break their tongues on our cryptic slavic language.

Dave, et. al., I have one of those DSO quad-channel pocket scopes, and a Velleman single channel monochrome pocket scope also. My issues are a lot of the work I do is out in the field and my wife and I live in a small apartment (flat). Why are they called "apartments" when they're all stuck together? Space at quite the premium for us and I can't see having a bench scope right now. That's on the list for after we get a house.
On the one hand, Radio Shack charged me $6.95 US for a 555 timer, but on the other... there's nothing like an electronics shop within 500 miles of my house.

I don't like alcohol that much for cleaning, plus IPA is expensive. Its dry and aggressive. But if you want it to be oil free, ok. Usually I just try some white gas/lighter fluid first. Works a charm on PCB, tools, hardware parts etc. If that don't work then maybe either some alcohol or naphta, or something more aggressive (acetone, thinner).
Gday Dave, If you need to clean that permanent marker of your bench theres a product called "Orange Power" made by Planet Ark. They sell it in the supermarkets as a air freshener, but you can use it as a cleaner. My wife works in a supermarket and uses this product to clean the benches at the checkouts with this stuff. I've tried it and it works a treat. cheers
"Paddy's wigwam" a wigwam as in an American Indian's home and you got the right picture. He also mentioned that he'd _"half inched"_ the mail bag which is rhyming slang, "half inched" = pinched (stolen). It doesn't necessarily means it's literally stolen, it probably fell of the back of lorry ;-)
My initial reaction is to use a little bit of nail polish remover or diluted acetone, and rub it on the mat. However, that could rub away some of the material on top.
Radio Shack still exists just on the Internet, you can order these shirts from there web site. They also have some of the stuff they used to sell in stores, just with less selection. Why they still exist does not make sense, instead of having a better selection they actually often run out of the few things they have available on the web site.
I've made a digital speedo for my holden because the mechanical one is non-linear and a good 10k out on the upper end. my one does km/h and takes the sense from the back of the speedo, there is a reed switch on the rotating side which coincides with the wheel rotation. the speedo is within 2 - 3 k of my GPS and some small improvements may make that better and with a small code change I can get it to do miles per hour
RadioShack actually sold those shirts in their stores for a short while during the summer of 2014, one of their final "moment of panic" attempts to get more customers in their stores before tanking.
to remove the permanent marker, use some pure Ethanol, or rubbing alcohol as you may call it, we use it in the Lab all day to remove our markings on the Tubes before we stick them in the dishwasher

Dave, use a colourless blender pen to get the permanent marker off. They work a treat. I sell second-hand games for a living, and these things can get texta off of cartridges that has been on there for 20 years. It'll cost you $7 from Riot art and Craft. They look exactly like a normal marker but there is no dye in them - only the solvent.
Once I get a job under university, I will drop a few bucks to send in a bag of old tesla stuff. There are electrolitic caps that are still spot on even after like 40 years :D
Not all 9V batteries use "AAAA" cells. Some use small flat cells that are stacked. You can tell what batteries use what configuration by their part number 6LF22= FLAT STACKED CELLS, 6LR22= "AAAA" CELLS, The key is in the part number. 6L"F"22 F= flat cells and 6L"R"22 R= round cells or "AAAA"
Uh, I don't know about 9v batteries not being able to supply 1a, and 9v I have drop out around 6v anyway, but yeah, that's quite a bit of power not used between 7v and 6v. I have blown 11a fuses in multimeters testing the internal resistance of 9v before, going off the amps delivered on dead short. I guess it depends on the battery.

EEVblog I normally just rub the surface with a rubber to remove permanent marker, but it might just lead to the rubber making a big smudge if you get the wrong type or the wrong surface.
I think that velvety feeling plastic on that USB hub is often referred to as "rubberized plastic", or at least that's what I've heard it called and know it as. I think I've got at least one USB flash drive kicking around somewhere with that type of finish.
I'm gonna miss radio shack. I don't like to buy parts online, even though it's so much cheaper, there's just something satisfying about being able to pick up what you're looking at and physically inspect the part before buying it. Guess I'll have to get my 74xx and 2Nxxxxs somewhere else now.
When i worked in crane repair i would find those strain gauges stuck all over the place, they were basically a throw away item so the engineers would not even bother to remove them after testing, LOL
I bought that Cypress BLE devkit and the demo firmware doesn't advertise on BLE for very long before going to sleep, maybe 30 seconds to a minute. One of the buttons wakes it up.

Isopropyl alcohol removes sharpie stains.
And acetone removes the color of the mat as well. Acetone removes everything.
Shawn Swift Simply rub a dry erase overtop of a permanent marker... easy.
Ciprian Cristea I read that as "acetylene removes everything". and yes it does.

Acetone is pretty strong, but nitro solvents such as C6000 are even more powerful. Dissolves it all but bakelite!

Methyl hydrate is the best for cleaning marker and residue off of things.

"Soft feel" is the term I heard a lot for that molded-in texture on the USB hub.
Love the show. Would love to see a tear down of the original Game Boy you got a while back!
You can clean the anti static mat with methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol we used to do it years ago in the computer factory.

9V battery to 5V linear regulator still works.... Just not as efficiently as a switch mode regulator.
Dave,
why didn't you measured those old tesla parts!, check if that cap is still in spec!, make that xtal work to see how accurate it is and how it changes with temp

Stains get me very nervous and also i feel helpless. I can get very manic about stains :) btw a sharpie stain is not a real problem in the end.
disappointed that the calendar doesn't have a light to indicate the current date
Great mailbag this week !
you can get it off the mat with hair spray or dry erase marker
try putting some non-permanent market on the permanent marker before cleaning it off, it works on whiteboards
Brascofarian Nope, doesn't work.
EEVblog I don't know if it will work on fabric but I normally spray deodorant on permanent marker to remove it.
96% Alcohol (ethyl alcohol), Isopropyl alcohol. They should be able to dissolve the ink just fine.

EEVblog Sometimes, literally using a rubber eraser will take it off. I'm not even joking.
Dave, use a colourless blender pen to get the permanent marker off. They work a treat. I sell second-hand games for a living, and these things can get texta off of cartridges that has been on there for 20 years.
