Excellent video, thank you for showing us. My mum has a bafang motor like this on a budget ebike and it needs a new rim now. I intend to service it using this video as reference and will inspect the gears.
Get yourself a circlip plier that is closed when not in use, it's the reverse of the one you already have, it's cheap. You can also search for the larger tweezers, they will help in picking up small objects when using gloves. Best of luck.
From what i have been told, the thing that kills the plastic gears is the wheel coming off the ground while under power and then speeding up and coming back into contact with ground. Metal gears are available but can be noisey hence the preference of the nylon gears.
looking for a new bafang motor like this .. all I can find is the bigger size onces sofar .. Gears look fine in mine (engine makes noise). Anyhow .. enjoyed watching you work on this!
Amazing video. Thank you so much. Did it today and bike sounds like butter again. Btw....holy F$#K was it hard to get the old planetary gear structure out with just my toolbox... When I finally flung it above my head after 30ish minutes of prying with various combinations of tools, I threw my hands to the sky in celebration 😆😆
@Ebike Repairs Question for you... if I installed the new planetary gear part without using dielectric grease, how bad is that? Have I drastically shortened the life of the new planetary gears? A tiny bottle of dielectric grease here in Toronto is $16 for a tiny tiny bottle.... so I basically wondered if it was just cheaper to install new planetary gears each time instead of spending the additional money on the grease each time as well. What do you think? (Was also worried to use grease at all because unlike the top of your motor, mine has three holes that allow you to see into the internals of the motor. Though I understand this is the reason why you specifically need 'dielectric' grease)
@@EbikeRepairs Update, bought the planetary gears end of April, they're already starting to break as of today (july 16th)....took a chance and didn't put in any grease. There's my lesson and for anyone reading.
States use lithium grease, I was under the impression that lithium grease shouldn’t be used on plastic or nylon because it can damage the gears. Shouldn’t it be a silicone grease that is used?
Well, I've had people tell me the same when I use silicone grease! Moly grease too... I figure some grease is better than none, I've yet to see a failure due to grease type.
Those shims seem really important as ive put my motor back in and it doesn't move or is really stiff, im assuming that is because its catching, i just don't remember seeing any shimms hmmm , bearings seem ok . If i loosen the srews to the housing it turns so im assuming its touching without the shimms . Looking on line amd carnt seem to buy anything specific..any suggestions?
Hi, I have a Halfords Carrera e-bike and the three gears have stripped in the motor (Sr Suntour). I can't find any replacement gears of the size I need - 45mm diameter 32 tooth. would you know where I can get a set? Thanks, Tony.
The gears on mine are fine, but are in contact with the alloy casing there @8.21secs and causing resistance when pulling the bike backwards, and also making a noise when under load? Any ideas on how to cure that?
@@EbikeRepairs Yes, I had a hall sensor replaced, took it back to him and he's shimmed it out, but the reason I took it back is because it makes a grating noise when the thumb throttle is applied. As the speed pocks up, the grating dies off, seems like the clutch?
Where can I buy the nylon gears? The separate gears and the gears with the metal plate. I found some on Amazon but it says two months before they arrive. 😢
It looks like the gear the planetary gears fit into in the outer wheel Bell I'm not going to try it but it looks like it's replaceable. mine seems to be made out of plastic nylon
@@EbikeRepairs, Everything breaks, given enough time. Would the cost of replacing planetary gears over time be cheaper than the entire motor seizing? For example, with steel gears the motor would arguably be able to handle torque longer without failing, and the cheaper parts are more wasteful having to be replaced more often, correct? Wouldn't it be better to have steel gears that don't break as often?
I have the same problem my gears only had two half moons on two of the bearings the gears broke into 8 to 9 different pieces. Exact same motor but I don't have the spaces or the clip ring on the main shaft
I have a apais a6 cargo bike and took it out in the rain. I now have loud grinding sound and sometimes delay in motor when breaking and pedaling/throttle again. Its intermittent like 1-2 minutes on my 9 mile commute. What do you suggest I do? deal with it, open it up and clean out and regrease? It only has 230miles on it.

Probably! It will only splurge out and not cause any issues aside from messy next time I have to clean it 👍 so not the worst issue... But I'd like the pot of grease to go for longer....
Jackpot video on gear repair!!! Truly appreciated! Love and subscribed!

Possibly, or just dry grease/overloading. metal gears wear the hub itself, which is expensive.
What a fantastic guide was really interesting.. Definitely gives me the confidence to try and repair my BAFANG hub motor.. 👍👍👍
Glad it helped

That's an ace explanation and video. Cheers! What will cause this on a motor with less than1200 hours? Am I pushing my bike too hard?
Possibly too much power - or bad luck!
Thanks, very good explanation!

Hi friend, thank you for this video, I'm trying to know how to change the gears because there are no circlips on the axle like other motors?
maybe press fit, use 3 jaw puller perhaps
I hardly ever comment but bro nicely done!

how much does this repair cost i have a 1000w rear hub that needs new gears ?

Do people replace the larger sealed bearings on the axel too which press fit into the casing? I can find no videos of this process being done.
I have done it in my horror story BAFANG motor videos I think 👍
Would you know witch gears I should buy for the Arial rider 1000 watt bafang .. I can't find any info. Thank you
Sorry I'm not sure! You'd have to email BAFANG directly to ask for technical info
On the hub there's a parts number/code, I googled that and found multiple websites selling them. Maybe that'll work for you too.
may I ask how many months or years will wear the gear?
gears should last around 10,000 miles but some last over 50,000! all depends on how clean the motor is and how gentle one is with the power
Hi i have a francis barnet e bike with a 8fun rear hub motor . it spins forwards but wont go backwards! Is this normal? Thank you.

Hmm, perhaps just machine down a washer to fit, washer + block of wood + belt sander + extreme caution?
Any advice on planetary gear? Is metal better than the nylon ?
Stay with nylon unless running crazy high power, then the gears wear out not the motor components themselves

Unfortunately they're not available outside buying a new motor from Halfords it would seem, sorry!
Just wondering do clutches fail? & if so how do you tell?
They do. Motor will free spin both ways so you'll get no drive, or it won't freewheel so you'll get high resistance when pedalling without assistance.
What is your planetary gear removal tool called? The thing that is like a tripod that pulls it out of the motor?
'3 jaw puller' thanks
Hey mate can I buy the gears from you once I find out today which ones I need
Yes of course, get in touch 😸

The gears on mine are fine, but are in contact with the alloy casing there @8.21secs and causing resistance when pulling the bike backwards, and also making a noise when under load? Any ideas on how to cure that?
I'm not sure, sometimes there are shims or washers or lock rings in place, if someone opened your motor up before and lost them, it might explain it!

@@EbikeRepairs it was iike it had been stored on the mary rose now in the bin
Is the only material for the gears plastic, and if so why?
Nylon, cheaper to replace the gears than the whole motor so they wear out instead of the expensive parts.

@@rustlingbushes7678 Nope. The cost of the motor is much higher than the labour cost to take it apart, put in new and seal it up.
Lithium grease is not good for nylon gears. It damages them. Silicone grease is optimal.

Sounds like a plan to me, maybe it's full of water and messing up the sensors
What is the ratio of the gear inside? If the wheel trues 2 rpm, What does the motor turn?
Sorry I'm not sure :)
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
I didn't see any of those shims when i took mine apart.
Not all motors have them, if it's together and there's 0 play in the axis of the axle, you don't need them.
What size are the gears?
I believe these are the smaller of the two common bafang types, I can't remember but they're very commonly sold on AliExpress etc.
What's the reason for gears stripping?
i think just age and use. sometimes debris in motor
Why didnt you use metal gears?
Might cause irreparable damage to the casing? I thought about this but woyluld ratger the nylon if they last a few thousand miles a turn
metal gears can damage the motor, i just replace with nylon, often good for 3000-12000 miles!
