- **DO NOT CONTACT AFFORDABLE EBIKES LOOKING FOR AN AXEL, THEY DO NOT SELL THEM**
The axle of my ebike hub motor stripped. In this video I go over how I did this Ebike Hub Motor Repair doing a full hub motor axle replacement with a new axle from the manufacturer. This process will be similar to what you'd expect from a Bafang Hub Motor, but this was done with Greenpedal Hub Motor.
In the typical TheHowToDad style; no specialized tools were used in the making of this video!
*** DO NOT CONTACT AFFORDABLE EBIKES ASKING FOR AN AXEL THEY DO NOT SUPPLY THEM***
Where I can get one ???
@@miqelito23 you basically can't...I had to beg the manufacturer to send me one, and it was ose to $100 by the time I got it 3 months later.
@@TheHowtoDadnot trying to eff with you, but you know what would make this a reaaaaaly helpful video? if you could tell us where to source those types of components... I'd like to change the axle and/or case halves on a hub.
@@mindgames11 ya...you can't...I had to go directly to the manufacturer, and they really didn't want to send it to me. basically you need to buy a new motor and swap the internals. sorry

ya...it's always nice to know what's in there.
I love the emphasis you put into safety. The detail you went into when disassembling the motor was amazing thank you so much!
I was winging it. figured it out, works great

A little dielectric grease will help that wire assembly slide in easier if you put a light coat on the sheathing. Try to keep it away from the end though, it'll make it tough to grab the end when you're pulling with pliers.
Great video. I need to replace that same wire, and now I’m feeling rather confident that I can do it myself.
I have to say, I was pleased to see the Ontario license plate on your 'soon to be' camper! Always nice to so the talent on our side of the border!
Great video, and perfect for a person I know who's looking to do the same job. I've had hub motors apart dozens of times, but the axle and windings are about the only thing I haven't done yet. Most of my motors are Bafangs, and the magnet structure has slots that you can put the puller arms into. But I do it sideways in a bench mounted swivel vice so not to worry about the magnets dropping back into place. Thanks again for the video!
Love this video. Thanks for the great break down of parts and framing great shots of the work. These little motors are really amazing.
sick vid man. literally on the edge about taking my hub apart to service it but i think i can do it after watching this! youre such a positive guy lol thanks for sharing
Awesome! glad you find it helpful. It can be scary when you look at a project as a whole, but most projects are less daunting when you break them into parts. Hope your service goes well
There's no commutator on a brushless motor. That's what the hall sensors are for. The rotor is the outer part with the magnets. Hub motors, like ceiling fans, and ebike motors have the rotor on the outside and the stator with the windings in the center.
awesome! thanks for that explanation
For clarification not all ebike motors are like this, (most) geared hubs are, but direct drive are not. The technical term is "outrunner" vs "inrunner" motor.
Where I case I ever need a hall sensor, where would one find those? Plus I just bought another e-bike like the one my wife has, when I was pushing it in the shed the back wheel was a bit tight, not real bad, it could be the disk brake or if it is in the hub what could it be? It hasn’t been used for about 4 years, it’s been inside the whole time. It actually has a lot less miles than my wife’s,, it’s an Emmo monster. They are good bikes, only paid $300 for it. Very good shape other than battery’s and that stiffness
My e bike started acting goofy. Just pedaling freewheel works and change stays on. The second I give some power it’s like the freewheel portion of it locks up. Kicks the chain off. I was thinking a loose magnet but not certain. Any ideas? I had just put new meat on it. When I first turned the wheel there was a clicking sound but couldn’t tell if it was that or brakes. LCD no codes
The problem you had feeding the wire into the new axle. Next time take some 50 lb braided fishing line it's got the diameter of about 12 lb test strength and small diameter. Tie the braided line to the wires harness feed the fishing line through. Before you put the axle in. Then once it's in the braided line will help you pull the wire through. That's all I've done it and works good also you can take something basic like butter from your refrigerator put it around that harness it'll help it feed it through through with ease. Interesting pointing out that hole it's supposed to take Grease. That was frustrating how to take it apart again. Anyway great video
I pick up an e-bike for 50 bucks at a garage sale because the guy overloaded the motor and from my understand I either have to replace it or get into find out what's going on. This tutorial was a great understanding on how the system works. Good job and thanks!
best thing to do is to find the same motor, just the motor and swap out the internals. most motors are pretty cheap, I wouldn't expect to spend.more than a couple hundred bucks and about half hour of your time
Thanks for showing the tear down and rebuild of the electric bike hub motor. Will help me when I have to do it for my face wise, as my hub motor doesn't spin when there's load on the bike, only when it's in the bike stand with the up motor.
sounds like your windings might have a short. if that's the case buy the same motor and replace the internals. it only takes 10 minutes to do that
Cool hard job done, so I decided to don’t do it my self. To complicated to change axis my self.
Thanks
You save me time
Thank you this video come in handy replacing the cable and hall sensors in my motor 👍
I saw a video from Grin where Justin used strong tape wrapped around the end of the cable to make something that would come through the end and then provide a better option for pulling the rest of the cable out that side.
saw that too. wasn't necessary for this job.
While u were at it u should have cleaned and lubed the bearings too… ty for the video, nice to see other ppl being handy and fixing their things too.
Thank you for the tutorial just save my self buying a new emotor and fix it my self!
Very good video, One thing I would include, if you have never done this before take lots of picture to help you remember how to reinstall thing back in the correct order a lot of us have done this so much we make it look easy.
I’m having the same issue! I hope that Violamart will send me a new axle and bearing set
Great video. I have my motor off and on my bench and this has helped figure out what I'm doing from here. I am not sure exactly which replacement 9 pin cable I need so I am going to try and solder it. Its my first time soldering, wish me luck! If you have any tips on how to know which cable you need that would be helpful.
Great vid, excellent shots and explaingin all along. super helpful...suggestion: some silicone oil or synthetic grease applied to the cable and shaft before inserting it likely would have made the job a lot easier getting that wire in. using pliers like yoiu did could damage the wires and reduce the current carrying ability.
It's really good video. I have the exact same problem but can't get a replacement axle. You make it look easy...very doable. Thanks !
the best, easiest and cheapest solution is to buy a new motor and swap the internals. swapping the internals tales about 10mins
@@TheHowtoDad How do you figure buying a new 350.00 motor is cheaper than the 25.00 axle?!
@@medusa569 the axel cost me $90 and took aomg time to arrive. also the repair took hours to perform. a replacement motor should be less than $350, you don't need the rim, just the motor

glad it's helpful! if you find a massive problem, it's far easier to buy a motor and just swap the internals
That's great movie clip. Many thanks.
Thanks, was having some difficulty figuring out how to get motor out of housing. This helps, going to have to remove gears to be able to pull it out.
take the rear wheel to a local bike shop. they will take the gears (cassette) off for you with a special tool
@@TheHowtoDad LOL, went out flipped wheel over large cardboard box of rags, took nuts and washers off of axel and then touched axel to see what was needed next. Motor and axel just fell in the box of rags, I'm so lucky. Just the thinnest film of grease on gears, it was making a weird noise after just 50 miles so I'm hoping fresh grease will fix it. Thanks again!
@@dailyrider2975 ya. clean the old grease off and replace it I'm sure it will be good as new
@@TheHowtoDad Well got it all together and it is working, it is a brand new bike and few weeks before I worked on it. So not sure if there isn't another issue. Still seems to make a bit of noise getting to speed, but then pretty quiet on cruise, definitely hearing a low full power. Maybe it's because its a geared motor, my older regular bike is direct drive and pretty silent.
@@dailyrider2975 how would.you describe the noise?
What are you thinking dude? Leaving the winding even nicked, can reduce the flow of current! All windings have a varying amount of insulation. Yeah, it's thin, but it's there. You can't assume to suck current through one wire into the adjacent wire. One strand will screw up the whole magnetic field. I would considder rewinding it with a slightly thicker, well insolated(dark purple/red). This will most likely increase your lost torque, and then some. Ask someone with hands on experience.
Thanks I just needed knowledge about shaft removal. I have a tricycle adult with a front hub motor. I converted first a 1000 watt. Kept blowing off the forks but fixed now it works pretty well. Now put on 1200 and thinking dual rear hub motors my trike has a solid axle. I am thinking about pressing them onto my axle. This shows possibility was that axle staggered and middle larger ? It looked like that. I don't know about this but ... Thanx for the post.
Great skill and patience good job😍😍😍😍😍
Great video although I dont have the tools to fix my hub
I think it could be the planetary gears grinding away back wheel, make wired noise when using petal assist
you should be able to take it apart to look and see if that is the issue. the gears may just need grease. that's easy to do
That was an informative breakdown of the problems with a hub motor, and has helped me with something. I am going to replace my 500w rear with a 750, then I will have a spare 500w motor for my fat tire bike. I wonder if its possible to modify the shaft to make it fit the smaller front fork drop outs then add it to the front wheel and use the same old controller, another thumb throttle and a new small battery on a rack on the front, just to give me a bit of extra power on a hill when required.
So now I know its kind of possible for me to add a new axle shaft.
(I was planning to remove the cassette holder cut the axle down and cut new threads with a tap and die set.)
what do you think?
anything is possible, if you do figure out how to mount it to your fork jsut make sure you use a torque arm

Brushless motor…no commutator..a great project, hope I can service my motor as easily!
Great tutorial. Needed this.
As mechanic, the best advice you have is wearing safety glasses.
I came thisclose to losing an eye but for safety glasses.

Great in terms of sustainability, but how long did it take in real time (also delivery time) and how much did the spare parts cost. It might be easier to order a 2nd wheel with motor right away.
a motor would have been easier and probably faster to order. just swapping the internals would have taken 15 mins and would have been much easier...lesson learned
Where’s the fun in that 😅.
Seems like it's better and definitely easier to just replace the whole motor
I would 100% agree. a new motor is only $200. and you could easily just swap the internals.
Looking to buy a replacement motor that’s a 52 x 7 50 or 1000 but I can’t find one. It’s for my Ecell bike.
Or find someone that can repair my cable on my 750.

@@johnejohnsoninformationtec8998 cables are fairly easy to fix
You seem to be the most knowledgeable one I've seen for e bike motors. I'm such a newbie but is there a way of testing to see if the wheel will move by bypassing the throttle and the module? By accessing the three main wires and the battery?
I would definitely not do that! the throttle sends a signal to the controller, then the controller sends the correct power to the motor. if you bypass the throttle and the controller your motor will probably spin up very fast, then never spin again
@@TheHowtoDad ok, thanks for the response. Hopefully you can shed some light on what's going on with my e bike. It's a front hub assist Jauopay eBay with 48 volt battery. I noticed my front wheel was loose so I tightened it but I think I over tightened the nuts on the motor wheel. It worked for a second and then stopped working and all I get is a click from the wheel. My dvom shows 57 v from the battery using pins in the wire, when I snap the throttle no drop in volts or break in connection from the dvom. Am I reading voltage from the module to the three wires? My throttle seems to be getting 4.5 volts but I get no voltage to the bigger three wires to the hub motor with throttle wide open. I did the simple test of touching the wires not connected and got a drag and resistance with no drag, I don't know what I'm looking for but I'm fairly good with the dvom. Hope you can help.
@@tommyhajimoto6968 start with the easiest problems first. Check all your connections. Unplug and plug them all back in, use silicone grease on each connection. Check that the pins in the plugs are where they should be. next step would be to check the throttle, may need to be replaced. it could also be your controller. if your controller overheats it will stop working and will need to be replaced. It may not be your motor at all, it is likely something more simple
@@TheHowtoDad yeah I'm hoping it was coincidental I did have the bicycle upside down and the throttle could have been damaged.
@@tommyhajimoto6968 I hope its something simple like connections
Lube the shaft as said, (LOL....not really...), and maybe pre insert say...12lb fishing line, and then nail knot it to the cable to help pull with the push.
That's a motorcycle-handlebar-wiring trick.
Awesome video Lost the key that connects axel to gear (2:23 on your video). Any idea where to find a replacement?
this is a pretty typical item. best place to start looking is a small engine repair shop. tell them you lost your axle key, and measure the cavity where the axle key fits into to get the correct size
hey for pulling wires through conduit you can use a lubricant (25-75 soap and water mix) to make the wire pulling process easier. i wounder if that would work for this application.
feeding the cable in i actually striped a couple inch of the sleeve and the other wires turned much easier no tape no or fishing tools other then the needle nose as they protruded i watched many videos on the rewire and when i stared my rewire i done the opposite lol i cut the wire from the end of the axle as only 1 left and pulled the rest into the stater side as 1 at a time took no effort then removed sealant and then rest of sleeve and as i said striped a few ince that would be needed after to rewire and it just slid in like butter resealed and then rewired happy camper i should have made a vid myself make all these difficult looking ones null and void ill do it on next 1 i think
Great explanation over here! hands up! CLAP!. and Subscribed! So let me ask a question to everyone.. do you actually know where I can purchase a new electric and coils or someone who fix the electronic on motor to recommend? my motor was under the water after a heavy rain fell on us I didn't realize and notice the amount of water that have the housing of the motor (that burn out after a week the coils and electronic on it (Error 24))
Excellent video. Shim issues. Interesting I've had had the motor out to regrease and clean the gears, it all turns fine until I tighten it up. It's if it's catching, I thought I was missing a shim on the in side of the hub casing where you accidentally put one. Have you any suggestions why it might not be turning when I tighten back up . If I rest the motor back in lined up with the gogs, it drops in fine . It turns in one direction but not the other and when I put the screws in it doesn't turn at all.
Your yampa has a recall on the front fork. Contact the company. If it does fall under the recall they will send you a new one.
unfortunately this bike was stolen...
I recently shredded through my green wire on the motor , I think i will replace the small section but it has been giving me an error 24 code. it would be cool to replace the plastic gears with metal ones , i wonder what pros and cons that would have.
My nylon planetary hub gears are fouling the alloy casing @ 2.27mins, it's as if it needs a shim or a spacer to just stand them off a little? 1mm would probably do it, any ideas on this?
How long is that axle shaft? It looks just like the one on my Ancheer. I need to do the same repair but can't find an axle and Ancheer isn't responding. Thanks. great video.
Is there a way to take off the planetary gears off without a gear puller thank u
you should be able to do it, but you will need a pair of circlip pliers
How to tell someone’s from Canada..axles been stripped OAT…(out😅) great video man
Where did you buy the wire
I contacted the manufacturer directly. It was not easy to convince them to sell me the parts, and the parts were not that much cheaper than just buying a whole new motor. I'd suggest buying a new motor and just swapping the internals. it is MUCH easier, and doesn't cost that much more.
Congratulations. Of course, when you tapped the new motor shaft with a metal hammer, I almost jumped out of my seat. LOL! The epoxy on the windings was a good fix.
there were some sketchy moments...
Your next ride should be a diy bbshd mid-drive 1000w 52v bafang.
A lot faster, way more torque, good reliability, better handling due to motor placement and easy to add more performance with aftermarket parts, the HD can handle up to 5000w without damaging the motor.
thanks for the tip!
Nice video, what did you use to remove the sprocket though?
Any link for the axle of ET cycle f1000?

Your video is awesome I use it as reference for me taking apart my hub motor to replace the axel just like you but I'm stuck and need some advise .The part I'm at is something you called a "Sur" clip not sure if that's the correct name but what's the name of the tool you used to take it off and how can I remove the "sur" clip if I don't have that tool?
ahh! good question, it's a circlip. you need circlip pliers. available at any car parts shop or online
Awesome video
Where can i find a axle for hub motor? I can't find, you got a link?
basically you can't...I had to direct to the manufacturer, and even then it was expensive and difficult to get
Knowing me I would have just rethreaded the shaft for a slightly smaller size nut with a thread die?
I did try that. didn't quite work..would have required a lathe to machine the diameter, then die to thread. The moral of the story is: install a torque arm.
Incredible !!
Where are the wheel bearings? At 0:49 it looks like the wheel bearings are part of the motor's plate cover? Is that so? How do you get at those in order to clean and regrease them?

Figured I’d ask, but if you don’t have time I totally understand. Have a great day!
Hey Cody! I answer all my comments, even from REALLY old videos!
as far as the shop vac method goes, it worked, but a stronger vacuum pump would work better. Something you might try is using the shop vac to pull the bag down and then use a hand pump to pull the vacuum down futher. But, like I said, this worked!
